G3.5 was released in 2009, so this is its first anniversary year. Hooray! (?)
We tend to be more fond of things when they are no longer in stores, what do you guys think?
I think they're cute. I don't actively seek them out but I think it's a nice little compact collection that wouldn't be too hard to complete. I also really appreciate that they have forelocks and that the rooting of the hair changes a bit depending on the intended hairstyle of the pony.
It's sad they didn't have a wide range of characters, and Newborn Cuties was questionable at best. I don't think I'd leave them behind at a thrift store. ^.^
-
My opinion of them hasn't really changed. They still look like fetal G4s to me, although at least the hair was nice.
-
Their faces bug me. I just really, really don't like their face proportions / expressions. I guess they were going for that whole "make things look like a human baby so people will love it" thing but I don't think that works very well on horses!
They must have been popular with kids at some point though because I do find a fair amount at thrift stores. I don't pick them up on their own but sometimes I get them in baggies with other ponies. (I put them on eBay, lol.)
Edit: They do have really nice hair though.
-
I still think they are ugly, though not quite as bad as some people make out. I wouldn't mind owning one (and only one) but I wouldn't go actively seeking them out. I think the babies with the broken, backwards bending knees in the crawling pose are the worst part of 3.5 honestly. The standard ponies themselves aren't that bad.
-
I collect them as much as I do the others, I think they look really cute! BUT, because Hasbro decided to keep going with the awful Core 7 thing, they are by far the least fun generation to collect for me because it is all Core 7 (and the three moms). I'll more or less consider my G3.5 collection to be complete once I get Cheerilee and Scootaloo's mom for the normal ponies, and Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, and StarSong for the babies. There are some specific versions of characters I do have already that I'd like to get at some point, but I don't know if I'm gonna actively seek them out. Aside from the ones I listed to complete having each character that exists in normal and baby form, any more additions will just be from me thrifting all the ponies I don't have that I happen upon in the wild.
3.5 would be much more fun to collect if Hasbro had ditched the Core 7 nonsense and had recreated more G3 ponies in 3.5 form.
-
I first bought ponies during G3 and I stopped buying MLP because they started making G3.5. I just don't like the way they look. I have a few in the house though, just so I can say I have them, but they all came in lots with other generations.
-
I was already losing interest in G3 during the later years so G3.5 was totally off the radar for me, I wasn't really collecting any pony things right then. Now though I purposefully avoid g3.5 if I get some I just throw them in a lot with fakies, g4 doubles and sad g3 ponies and put them on the FB marketplace. Need to save my space for cute ponies
-
I wasn’t excited by 3.5. Though I barely knew it happened. I distinctly remember G1, G2 and G3 but I wasn’t paying attention near the end of G3.
So, I missed out.
I do think they’re kinda cute.
-
G3.5 is cute, you guys are just mean. :P
But I don't really want doubles of the same character. I need Toola Roola and the moms and I'm done! I might be interested in some of the anthro Ponyvilles, though...
-
I don't go out of my way to get them, but they aren't sent away.
They are a nice size to work with, compared to a G4 brushable, and the hair is okay. The solid bodies make them really heavy.
-
They still look a little funky with their proportions to me, but they’ve grown on me a little! I actually love the weight they have to them, and they do have much nicer quality control than G4! I’ve gotten a couple in lots and I’m letting them stay. :) I don’t think i’m going to go out of my way to buy them though.
-
I remember hating them growing up, as most of my formative years were with g3, and I disliked change. Now? I can say they’re lower on the ladder for me in terms of toys and animation. They’re alright. Not as bad as newborn cuties (massive rant about those things, but my sisters childhood baby skywishes is a proud member of the herd) but I’ve come to alright terms. I don’t have many of the toys, and I don’t actively seek g3.5 out. But I’m happy to have the g3.5 McDonald’s rainbow dash and pinkies grocery store playset from my childhood. Not my faves, but they are a part of the herd. And I don’t leave any herd member behind.
-
I don't like them and give them away to small children if any sneak into the house as parts of lots. My friend and I once sneakily used some (together with a few G4) to swop with her nieces in order to get her childhood G1 ponies back from the gran's house. We felt that was a very good use to make of them. Now my friend has the G1's safe in her herd and the kids still have ponies to destroy - um, PLAY WITH - and everyone is happy. Fantastic!!!
-
I actually think they're cute. And they are better quality than a lot of G4; their hair is amazing. I don't actively seek them out, but I keep them if I find them. I have 4 (Cheerilee, Pinkie, Rainbow Dash and Sweetie Belle).
I have several Ponyville figures too, I'm not really sure if those are G3 or G3.5.
-
I only really collected the PonyVille figurines of them, as a kid I was only interested in the G3 ponies (G3.5 didn't really interest me as a kid plus I began losing interest in ponies then) I wouldn't say G3.5 are as bad as some say- they're kinda cute in their own way but I prefer them as PonyVille figurines compared to brushables as I think their style works better as little figures :P
-
I never bought them in stores. I have one sweetie belle whose colour scheme I love...otherwise they would probably be on the discard list.
-
Hm I cant say I hate them but ... I dont really like them either. I got a few, one bought for me by my Grandma (Id never give that one up!) and I won a couple at the german pony convention in 2010. So yes, I think Im gonna keep those but I wont add any more to my collection :)
-
I don't like them, as they mark the beginning of the current era when Hasbro cares more about making ponies "cute" than making them, you know, actually look like ponies. Plus I don't like the G3.5 animation, maybe except for the Christmas movie at times.
-
they've grown on me! starsong is my favourite g3 so i may look into her g3.5 releases sometime.
plus i think the art for the animation (not the web one, forgot its name) is really cute :P
-
Well they've certainly gotten my approval after being so jarring to look at when they first appeared.
-
I've just got one Toola Roola, and I don't plan on getting anymore unless they're for a very good deal or I really like them.
-
They've grown on me a bit, I suppose. I still wouldn't want one, though; they're just not my thing.
(Although I admit I'd probably keep the mother ponies if any of those fell into my hands.. they are kinda cute.)
-
I can’t believe it’s been 10 years! It feels like yesterday that I was turning my nose up at them in stores!
I’m not a fan, however I’ve amassed a small collection of them to just have them.
-
I do think they’re cute, but I didn’t keep any or them because I don’t like duplicate characters and I already have them all in G3. I don’t like the babies (never been a fan of baby doll play), but I do keep some of the baby accessories to go with other gen baby ponies. I thought the baby accessories were really well done.
Elf
-
I still like them :) I am just a few ponies away of completing the adults. As in every variant but not all accessories. I don't like the babies. Ponyville the same, I miss a few.
-
No no no XD they are so freaky!
-
I like them more than G4 but I was so done with G3 by the time we got to G3.5 that I didn't have a burning need to have them. I have a few that have come to me in thrift store bags, but I haven't TRIED to bring them in the house.
-
I didn't like them then. They're still my least favorite generation now. I actively avoided them in stores and I pass them up at swapmeets.
-
I think I may have just one but I dont really collect them they arent my thing.
-
Back in the day I didn't want them and had grown salty about how G3 was going. Now? Still a great big nope, odd appearance aside it was the Core 7 part one that really made them "nopes". My how time flies indeed.
-
The only ones I can stomach are the "moms". In my head, they are the awkward teens of G3 and have kind of a Babysitters Club thing going on.
It's kind of a pity, since the G3.5 hair is often really nice, but I just can't get over their weird sculpts. And the whole Core Seven thing (really just Six at that point, poor Toola Roola!) is an automatic thumbs-down.
-
A big nope 10 years ago, and a big nope today. XD
-
No then, and no now. They don't get to be in my collection, they weird me out with their jumbo heads... I get them, clean them and they go straight into the trade bin.
There is one bit of merchandise I'm desperate for though...
The DVD that came with the convertible in the US. It's on my media grail list. I NEED it!
:yikes:
-
Neither do I. I still think the Core was cheap reuse of some G3 ponies and Star Song is a very good example for that since she is Silver Glow's repainted and renamed version with the same cutie mark. Hasbro knew that and that's why they changed her wings in no time.
Also, I'm still a hardcore G3 Minty fan so I can't forgive for Pinkie how she dumped poor silly Minty.

Yeah what's the deal with that? Minty was a popular character, she could've easily been the artsy pony instead of Toola-Roola.
-
To this day, I have no idea why they didn't make Minty one of the Core 7. If they had to had to cut the line down to just seven characters, then surely it'd make sense to use a very popular character as one of those seven?? Weird.
-
Oh I’m still bitter about Minty being cut! I never liked the new characters they introduced, they were all so lazy in design, and they already had well liked characters that could have easily fit in the personality types they wanted for core 7!
-
At the time it was nice and refreshing to see brushable pony toys with such a cartoonish look and proportions. Now we've had G4 toys that has arguably done it better, but I think G3.5 still has an unique charm to it. I appreciate that they tried to make each pony an individual. I'm not sure how well they succeeded at it, but I atleast like the idea. One thing that was really nice, as others have mentioned, was the individual hair styles and the thickly rooted hair. It does feel like the line ended to quickly for it to reach its full potential. The Newborn Cuties, although I find their designs questionable, had some of the best accessories we'd seen in a while (or have seen since then). It even felt like they were paying some tribute to the classic G1 baby accessories.
I wouldn't go out of my way to collect them, but they do have some cool traits that I hope we'll see again in later generations.
As for why Minty was excluded, I'm guessing Rainbow Dash was still considered more deserving of a spot. And in a set of seven they weren't going to have two ponies with a bluish/greenish body color. (it's totally ok if more than half of them are pink/purple though )
-
Sweetie Belle is cute, the proportions work on her. But that's about it. The newborns were scary!
I think they tried to give MLP the Littlest Pet Shop design style, and it didn't really translate well.
-
I didn't mind them. I thought they were cute, although I did prefer the other gens. I still like them, and Starsong is still a favourite of mine anyway :)
-
I was getting "too old" at that point and thought they looked silly and overly childish and girlish, which I feel bad for thinking now.
I'd love to get my hands on some!
-
I only got one, mainly to have an all-generations thing going on. (cheated with G2 though and only have a McDonald's pony, BUT.......)
G3.5 were too weird, don't get why they did that change when G3s already were cute.
