We love sparkling water in our house but its just so wasteful. our favorite sparkling water comes in plastic bottles which are horrible for the environment. I can't take it anymore. I can switch to the kind that comes in aluminum cans. it's not as good but aluminum is much easier to recycle.
I've also seen commercials for Soda Stream but i'm skeptical. Has anyone here used it? Is it less wasteful than the plastic bottles?
-
I haven't tried it since the 90s, but back then the canisters were really expensive and the syrups didn't really taste like the things they were meant to me i.e. cola. I still loved it though and thought it was the coolest thing ever!
-
I didn't realize it's been around so long. the canisters are still pretty expensive. i'm not sure how long they last either. maybe i just need to start drinking more plain water.
-
Yeah, it was gross.
-
My mom had one a long time ago (15+ years ago?). She didn't want to deal with the canisters. I don't think it was a reflection on it, she just is the type to buy things and not use them.
IIRC the syrups were not great. There might of been one I liked... *however* I would think doing more natural stuff like lemon or lime juice would be tasty. I wasn't into that back then. lol.
But to answer your question, it's absolutely less wasteful then plastic bottles...

I have one. Not a fan of the syrups but there are other things you can experiment with. Carbonated blackcurrant lemonade is delicious for instance.

I'm wanting to try one because yeah, I am going through a lotta plastic!

this. we have one, we do all sorts of things with flavours. fruit etc. there are a lot more brands of flavour now as well.

Agree with you about the waste! My old roomie had a soda stream, and circa 2014-2015 it was NOT a good solution for us seltzer-crushing monsters. Loud and expensive, plus the bottles got really scuzzy. We ended up replacing it with straight up Nitrous Oxide (n2o) cartridges from a restaurant supply store and adding fruit juice to the water to make our own, a la Spindrift. This has been a successful upgrade in the house, but we still keep cans on hand for convenience and to-go situations.
-
Definitely tried, definitely not my favourite. My family ended up getting a fridge with a built-in carbonated water function instead--that works a treat, and you can add whatever you like to it afterwards.
-
wow at fridge with built in carbonated water sounds like a dream!
-
We have one and we really like it! The gas cylinder lasts a long time, and we can take the spent cylinder to our local supermarket for a discount on a new one. (Presumably they clean up and re-fill it?)
We also really like the sugar-free Pepsi flavourant... we haven't tried any other syrups.
-
we have one, I like it. :) For syrups, I only drink the sugarfree pepsi one, it's pretty good :) Otherwise just sodastreamed water is great too ^^ I like to mix the sodastreamed water with cold brew tea. :)
-
i finally decided to go ahead and order the soda stream! i wish i would have done so before this horrible storm hit us.
-
I recently found out that I'm sensitive to sulphites and apparently drinking tap water is better for you than bottled. I checked and our water supply comes off an underground aquifer and tastes pretty good so I decided to try and just stick with that.
-
Hm... I've always drank sparkling water from the can. I guess I'm just used to it because before sparkling water I always drank pop in cans and it's just really convenient.
I've never tried Soda Stream. Is it any good? Does it make unsweetened sparkling water (because that's what I drink)?
-
We bought a Soda Stream around Christmas and it's been pretty nice! I have to admit I was skeptical at first but it's proven to be pretty handy. We've replaced the cartridge once so far. We've tried some syrups but I mostly prefer to use the thing just for making carbonated water, as I'm not that much into sweet drinks. I also really like it that you can decide how heavily carbonated you want it as I personally prefer lightly carbonated water.
@Harmonie - Yes it does! That's pretty much its only function, actually - you attach a bottle of water, press a button and ta da, instant sparkling water! It's up to you if you want to add something for flavour afterwards. Well, at least that's the model we have, I'm not sure if there are other, more sophisticated ones...? There appears to be many different kinds and the prices vary a lot, but I'm not sure what the main differences are. The size of the cartridges perhaps? Which would affect how often you need to replace it. Idk, maybe someone has more info!

One line of flavors for them made by Bubly, so yes... and people make their own natural flavors using juices and stuff. I guess it depends what you like.

I ordered the bundle with the Bubly flavors. I've never had Bubly sparkling water. hopefully it's good.

If they kept it faithful to the Bubly sparkling water they sell, then it will be unsweetened. Hopefully you're already used to that.
