Title: Show me your unicorns turned into earth ponies.
Post by: Gator on May 06, 2018, 02:15:04 PM
All my years in the pony community, I've seen pictures of adding horns to non-unicorns but I can't remember seeing photos of unicorns turned into earth ponies other than our Hasbro produced Dance and Prance ponies.

If you cut off a horn, can you heat something hot to melt and smooth out the plastic, or sand the plastic smooth on the forehead?
Then, could you (or has anyone) then extended the hairline down to create a forelock and possibly hide the scar of where a horn had been?

I'm not attempting this as I'm not in to customizing myself, but it's a thought i had and I'm curious if anyone out there has made custom Earth ponies from unicorns.
Thanks

I have a TAF Milky Way who had her horn removed (I'll try to remember and get a photo!), and I think it won't work to sand down the horn, unless it's a G4. Because the ponies are hollow, there's a small bubble/hollow in the base of the horn, and so even though the horn is 90% solid plastic, it's not 100%, so sanding it down would still leave a big hole in the pony's forehead. I've seen some folks cover the hole up with gems or other decorations!

You know how their are religious fanatics who want to ban Harry Potter for it's use of magic and wizardry? Well in the 90's there was a similar period where people were anti-unicorn because of the same magic argument. Some people would throw away their kids' toy unicorns or cut the horns off to be normal horses. If you find a pony who is meant to be a unicorn but has the horn removed, it is possible that it is a anti-magic survivor. It's really very sad.

On top of that, I've seen many Powders with loose horns or no horn at all. I've found one myself and it doesn't feel as strong as it should be. I suspect this could be due to not enough vinyl plastic coating the horn part of the mould or a thinner consistency being used as I don't recall ever seeing a Sky Flier with the same problem even though Sky Flier and Powder are the first two ponies in that pose and in the same set. It doesn't affect all Powders but I don't know of any other pony so frequently having this problem.

Moondancer had no symbol other than a faint outline of a few stars, and her horn was mangled. So I’ve been SLOWLY turning her into an adult Princess Sparkle when I have free time(which is scarce these days for me). I used polymer clay to make a 3d Star symbol to cover the gaping hole in her head.

I don't have the former unicorns but I realized that a broken horn g1 pony is perfect for a custom tempest shadow (movie) g4 custom

Welcome to my childhood :c seriously I cried every time they made me throw one out or cut off their horn

Oh my! D: I've been wondering about this unicorn thing!
I came across a comment on a link someone posted to pictures of TY Beanie Boos (I want to call them Beanie Babies still blegh) of various animals and all of them had horns on them. There was a lion unicorn specifically and someone commented that they wished they could get these but unicorns are banned in their household after a "certain incident" - someone asked them what and they politely declined to answer as their family has been severely shamed/ridiculed/outcast for it before. I've been wondering what the unicorns did for so long!!!
I wasn't raised religiously and no one in my family was ever really religious so I'm quite ignorant on a lot of things like that. With the anti-magic thing, it makes so much sense now!
The poor unicorns though! And my condolences to anyone who was forced to de-horn their unicorns! :yikes:

I'm very grateful for my parents who pretty much let me have free reign on interests and continue to do so/encourage me.

I've never seen a horn-less unicorn at second hand shops before, but I just moved a couple weeks ago and there are TONS of antique shops/flea markets here, all over the place! (I mean, all over the place but scattered- I'm out in the middle of nowhere in a forest, very smalls towns kind of peppered around) The big outdoor flea markets are going to be opening soon and I've been slowly checking out all the antique shops I can find.
I will keep my eyes peeled for potential anti-magic survivor ponies! (And ponies in general...!  I'm hoping to find some, this is Kentucky, tons of horses and horse lovers out here!)

Wow, we never had that here that I am aware of... must have been hectic. What I do tend to find is ponies who have had their horns chomped. Funnily enough one of those is TAF Milky Way. I made her a new horn  :)

@ KottonKandy - love what you are doing there, your pony is going to look awesome when you are done! Please don't forget to share.

I had to battle my religious family on the unicorn thing too. I LOVED unicorns as a kid and my mom didn't make me chop off any horns but she was uncomfortable with them and magic. My Grandma is the worst. I ended up researching and found that unicorns are mentioned in the King James version of the bible so I directed them to the passages and that ended that fight. I'm so sorry for those of you that had your unicorn's horns removed or had to hide your toys. It's so sad. I did have to hide my Sailor Moon collection because my mom thought it was a cult. So ridiculous.

I have always love the unicorns in my collection but Pegasus are my favorite.  I do have a unicorn G1 that has no horn and I turned her into a custom.  She has a new life as a character from Game of Thrones.

The unicorn mentioned in the Bible has long been debated by Biblical scholars and the general thought is that the creature mentioned in the Bible as a unicorn was most likely a rhinoceros as this animal fit the behaviors of the unicorn as described in the Bible.  I was in fact not a horse like animal at all most probably since it could not be tamed to plow as that is mentioned.  It could have also been a dinosaur like animal I guess or maybe something that died off we know nothing about.  It is one of those fun mysteries that no one will ever know for sure, but I am pretty sure they are right that it was not a mythological creature.   Some Rhinoceros have two horns and some one and since I have no idea of the biological background of Rhinos I can certain see where this animal can't be tamed and not really useful to man but more just useful in the animal kingdom.     I came from a Christian family and this unicorn issue was never really taught in my home or church.  So, it must be certain faith groups that worry about unicorns.  Last I looked they had not taken over the world yet. ^.^

I've had this happen with a Sky Flier, so it's probably endemic to the pose.  Not every one ends up with poor vinyl thickness in the horn, but there are some.

Goodness, reading about this religion-and-unicorns business makes me so glad my immediate family are laid-back about religion! Especially given the fact that I've been obsessed with all things pertaining to magic and witchcraft since I was six years old!

My gf's childhood Twirler spent about 15 years with no horn, though not because of any religious beliefs. She was the chief magician of my gf's childhood herd and worked magic by "twirling her magic horn" (I think this phrase appeared a lot in pony annuals and storybooks). All that twirling eventually resulted in her horn coming right off! It then fell down inside her body. Luckily, during the Great Pony Restoration of 2014 we were able to get it out and glue it back on.

More recently, I acquired a very chewed-up Majesty with only a partial horn. I did my best to glitz her up with some Swarovski crystals: https://imgur.com/a/CTQ6nwu As I got her before the MLP film brought us Tempest, we now joke about her having a broken horn 'before it was cool'.

On the subject of religion and unicorns. I feel somewhat qualified to comment as my degree thesis was on the subject of religious art and symbolism, specifically of the 1200-1300’s

The unicorn is a symbol of and associated with Mary. A unicorn will sometimes be shown in place of or alongside Mary in religious art through out history. This is because unicorns can usually only be seen or appear to those of pure spirit and those who have not been corrupted by earthly/material things. Mary is classed as pure because of her innocence and virginity, thus unicorns will be attracted to her :)

Christian art has begged, borrowed and stolen from many of what today would be classed “classical Christian iconography” from Pagan and other religions. There are many examples I can give, not just unicorns.

If we are quoting the Bible, the King James Bible is the one academics use ;)

Yeah, the 80s and 90s did have a lot of hysteria about magic and "the occult".  Everything from He-Man to My Little Pony to Dungeons & Dragons was considered "Satanic" by certain (not all) religious groups / people.  Makes me so sad when I hear about people having to throw out or cut the horns off their unicorn toys.

Mediaeval history made it into the Corral :lovey: :lovey:

I was baptised, went to a church primary school and we were members of the local church till I was eleven. I even went to Sunday School, but I took ponies TO church with me and nobody ever had any issue with them being there.

I was horrified when I first heard about dehorning for religious reasons, since it has nothing to do with Christianity. But as an adult I've learned that most things people ascribe to or justify by their religion actually have no basis in the faith. They're concepts invented by human insecurities.

If you believe in God, surely you believe he has better things to do than care if a kid's toy has a unicorn horn. And he absolutely isn't going to throw you out of heaven because you bought Powder for your kid, rather than Bow Tie.

I mean, seriously.

I'm a pretty lapsed Christian in the sense that these days people use Christianity to justify a lot of horrible things that have no relation to the Christianity I was taught as a child, and I don't believe in drawing lines and boxes around what I can believe in. Like PKW I've also got a background in mediaeval religion albeit mine was in context with mediaeval history and now I have a wider background in East Asian Buddhism and Shinto as well. You'd be surprised how often human failings masquerade as 'faith' in all of these stories. Giving in to superstition is a human weakness, not a tenet of faith. And they can definitely do better with their time and for their child than deface toys...

I also never yet heard a story of this dehorning happening in the UK, nor encountered it in my own church-connected childhood here but maybe I'm wrong...I've never seen a dehorned pony at a carboot sale either.

Taffeta ^.^

I recall the myth that Brazil never made unicorn's for superstitious reasons, however that myth was dispelled as pure fiction by Brazilian collectors.

Something else I remember being mentioned in the early 00's was a scamming tread were unscrupulous folks removed/ melted the horn and sold it as a "variant". I never saw one, but I would be surprised if people did do that.

I hadn't come across de-horning for religious or superstitious reasons until I started collecting and like you Taffeta, I've not seen or found a de-horn unicorn of any kind in the UK. The only kind of horn damage I've seen is chews or sharpening (I guess the horn wasn't pointed enough so someone took their pencil sharpener to it)

I imagine Brazil just didn't get unicorn poses to work from?

In any case, they look good how they are :)

My friend had a Milky Way whose horn more or less came off - but that was becuase she was using her as a weapon of defence against boys wanting to throw ponies on the roof, and Milky Way is soft plastic, she's not designed for that kind of play ;)

I have seen chewed horns, but I don't remember a pencil sharpened one ;)

Entertainer is a religious-orientated store here, and they didn't sell Monster High because of this, but they sell unicorns and MLP. I guess unicorns don't have any taboo religious significance in CofE...

In the 80s there were also urban legends about daycares brainwashing kids with Satanic messages and junk like that.  People just believed the most ridiculous, out-there ideas with no basis in reality . . . and they didn't even have the excuse of "the internet said it so it must be true" because it was all pre-internet!

TV preachers were a prime source of anti-magic / anti-toy / anti-everything hysteria.  The "Songify the News" guys auto-tuned one of them who preached the evils of Pokemon back in the day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oits7sq4nX0

I feel so sorry for that guy's kid.  Can you imagine if your dad told you, with a straight face, that "you can't go to heaven when you play Pokemon"?  Just . . . ????  (There were also books essentially saying the same thing, that MLP, Rainbow Brite, etc, were from the devil.  Turmoil in the Toybox (https://www.amazon.com/Turmoil-Toybox-Phil-Phillips/dp/0914984047) was one such.)

I wonder if guys coming up with this stuff actually believed what they were saying, or were they feeding people a line to make money?  In a way I'd actually prefer it if they were just cynical scam artists, but part of me thinks they were genuinely scared of every little thing in this life, thinking "the devil" was behind anything imaginative or fun.  What a sad way to live.

Edit:  One of the reviews for "Turmoil in the Toybox" quoted a bit about MLP:

"My Little Pony . . . Unicorns and winged horses, also known as a Pegasus, are derived from Greek and Roman mythology. . . . Because these toys are based on mythological creatures, they are occult. Mythology is in contradiction to God's Word. . . . The unicorn is a symbol of the anti-Christ, which the prophet Daniel described in his vision as the little horn which rises in the midst of the ten horns."

Hoo boy.

A lot of the time it takes only a few people to find a connection between something they don't like and religion. Then they mention it to someone else and suddenly you have a whole bunch of people who automatically disapprove of something without understanding why or questioning it.

Case and point, my dad decided Harry Potter was banned in our house because he saw a piece on the news about Catholics calling for a ban on it. He felt that if all these Catholics thought it was bad than it must be. No research whatsoever, not looking into why they felt it was bad. They said it was bad so it must be.

You actually can sand the horn off some ponies. I have a G1 Sparkler whose horn was bitten off by a child so I sanded it down just about flat (I stopped because I didn't want to start scratching her face). The vinyl was pretty thin at that point, but by no means a hole. You can still kinda tell it was a horn at one point, though. I feel like I probably could sand it flat and still have a little bit of vinyl left if I didn't mind the sandpaper on her face. I was thinking of puncturing a hole and adding a plastic gem like the Princess Brush & Grow ponies anyway, though.

I have a religious grandmother who saw fit to tell my unicorn-obsessed six or seven year old self that unicorns worked for the devil, but thankfully my toys were unscathed since my mother was less than pleased with this.

If unicorns are wrong, then I don't want to be right.

Man I was going to ask if anyone had any documentation of some really religious people being irked by MLP and unicorn toys because it sounded to me like it might be a really isolated incident...and then then some of you said you had memories of that happening to you as kids and even book quotes. Guys, I'm so sorry! That's pretty upsetting. The impulse to stamp out fantasy, especially for kids, is awfully stifling.

Also glad to see all the history about the symbolism of unicorns popping up here. That and unicorn art history is a deep, deep rabbit hole that's intriguing to read up on. Whether unicorn as Christ symbol was due to a translation issue or not, it certainly made its way into a lot of art in history. I'd love to see someone analyze how that art history influences modern imagery of unicorns, how what the represent has changed.

I always assumed hornless ponies just got chewed on. If you've got one, I hear Epoxy Sculpt is a great way to patch up all kinds of toys. You can also make a simple mold using a pony of the same shape as the damaged one and make the poor critter a new horn! See the link to the chewed on Rapunzel here: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,375746.msg1504005.html#msg1504005 (http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,375746.msg1504005.html#msg1504005)

Anyway, hope you guys are all living your best lives, loving unicorns and reading Harry Potter. The coven meets at 9PM sharp first thursdays of the month, and I'm bringing cupcakes! I'll see you all there! Ha ha, just kidding.

Before this turns into a religion is bad discussion, this isn't about religion but some people expressing their superstitions and fear and using religion as an excuse. A lot of people on this forum have faith, and faith is not always or even often bad.

I wonder if this is the reason behind the fact it doesn't happen in the UK.

I'm Brazilian, and Brazil in the 80's was all about mysticism! We were coming out of a military dictatorship, so everything was appreciated! The reason we didn't have unicorns is that Estrela (the brand that produced them) didn't have the mold to make them... Same with the BBE babies.
