Pony Corral / Re: When isn't it worth it?
« on: January 21, 2016, 06:08:30 AM »
I don't restore ponies I don't intend to keep because it's not usually worth the effort to me (or money if I would have to buy supplies to do it). Plus, some people don't like restorations, so I never know if restoring is even going to help me sell it.

That said, I think this also depends on how we're defining "restoring". I clean all ponies I get, remove marks and stains, sunfade, and sometimes even trim already cut hair to make it look a little neater, even if I'm going to sell them. I've even custom-"restored" ponies I intended to sell (ie: alternate rehair for a pony who's original hair is entirely gone or severely damaged and crumbling, entirely new symbols based on the old ones that were missing/rubbed off) but only when I have an idea that I really like myself. Otherwise, I'd rather just re-sell them as-is.

In terms of money, I agree with the people who feel whether or not to customize isn't just a simple value-comparison. Even if I can in theory get more for it, I prefer to keep as much of the original pony's...integrity?...as possible, if that makes any sense. Hence my primarily customizing/restoring only details that are entirely gone already. For my own collection, for example, I'd rather have a pony who's fading-pink hair is white than one that's had her faded hair entirely replaced (re-dyed might be acceptable to me, but I have yet to see any in person), and I'm not going to do anything to a pony I want to sell that I wouldn't do to one I was keeping. But I also may have some more freedom to not worry too much about the cost of my hobby vs cost of re-sale since I get almost all of my ponies in lots at thrift stores for way under their collector's value, and even reselling a few tends to make back a lot of what I spend in the first place. So saying "hobbies just cost money" isn't entirely how it works out for me.

I have her, and from photos, I'd have thought I wouldn't really be interested (pink and purple ponies are kind of overdone for me) but I ended up with her anyway and she's actually surprisingly pretty. It's that dark tinsel that really stands out to me as distinctive, plus her symbol reminds me of G1 Fizzy.

Why do people here keep saying there's something wrong with her name? Is it that it doesn't match her symbols, or something else I'm not seeing?

I think I heard from a friend end of Feb? But I don't know where that info came from.

I have a blog and a tumblr, but I never promote it since I post about social issues and related and I'm afraid of people getting mad at me...so I have, like, 2 friends who read it and that's it...which I guess makes it kind of pointless haha.

Blue, Brie, Havarti, Mozzerella, and ricotta, but I'm really picky about quality, particularly on the last 3. I also really like Romano, but figured I'd stick with what's on the list haha. Unfortunately, I don't buy those cheeses that often, and more commonly get cheddar or cottage cheese since they're easier and cheaper to pack for lunch, and I'm fine with lower-quality on those.

I actually don't know? I wish I did! But I have 300-ish ponies and I don't know what most of them are worth! XD I don't have anything terribly rare or especially sought after though...found them all in thrift stores and such. Maybe Cha Cha the Llama?

Sentimental value...that's a hard one...all of my childhood ponies are valuable to me in that sense...

Pony Corral / Re: Defrizzing hair with a hair curler?
« on: January 12, 2016, 05:35:15 PM »
I use a curling iron to straighten pony hair since I don't have a straightening iron. Pulling the hair through the iron in tiny segments seems to work the same as running a straightener over it, I would guess...again, don't have a straightener to compare.

Plasticizer leaking: because it can ruin otherwise perfectly fine paint.

Brown head/body: The only deterioration that really bothers me for it's own sake. I just don't like how it looks, though I'm a moderate amount of head-body mismatch.

Haircuts: I don't always mind them, some look OK or can be styled to make it look OK, and I'll collect ponies no matter the condition, but partial cuts frustrate me because I don't want to rip out the otherwise good hair to do an alternate rehair, but just rehairing partially is usually too much effort to me. Plus, I hate when it's something like half the length of a portion is cut...that half is still good! I don't want to have to get rid of that.

Also, missing limbs/horn...I don't mind missing flutter/winger wings so much, but when pieces of the plastic are cut off, it bother me.

All that said, all the other flaws listed don't really bother me much, and I still collect all of the above...hardly any flaw is a complete turn off for me.

Unless it's already rusty, I've just left it in place and let everything air dry. Not sure if that's actually a good idea? But it's what I do and what I suspect most others do too.

So one thing I thought was odd about the Garnet fusion in The Answer
Spoiler
It was so upsetting and "disgusting" to the Gems when Garnet fused- and clearly two different Gems - it certainly could not have been the first time since Gem culture is so ancient-

And yet... when Jasper wanted to beat the Gems, she and actually Lapis didn't really hesitate before fusing.

You could say that maybe things evolved since that first Garnet, like maybe in Gem society two different Gems fusing became more okay- but that doesn't make a lot of sense given how old Gem culture is right? Plus Lapis was trapped in the mirror, so wouldn't she at least have been reluctant or think that it was unnatural or disgusting to fuse with Jasper?   Just a thought.

But of course the real answer is that they wrote "The Answer" fairly recently right?
Of course I loved the episodes and can't wait for more :D
Spoiler
I think I can at this point still accept both Jasper's willingness to fuse and the other Homeworld Gems's disgust because Jasper's a warrior who seems more interested in success and what best accomplishes that than taboos, social norms, and etiquette. I don't think she doesn't care about that at all, but it seems believable that she's be willing do something when fighting that's unacceptable to what looked to be fancy aristocratic Gems in Blue Diamond's court. And Lapis was just angry and rejecting everyone at that point, so I can believe she'd stop caring about "acceptable" behavior...she basically fused out of spite after all.

Also, I got the Garnet Funko Pop figure for Christmas and it's awesome! They even made the shades translucent, so you can even see her eyes through it! I'm not really a fan of that series of figures, but I surprisingly do find the SU ones adorable.

Omg Elisto - that PONY CLUB DUFFLE BAG IS TO DIE FOR!! Can you imagine showing up to the Pony Fair with your stuff in that like a total baller? Haha! Love it!
haha, well, it actually is pretty small; less than a foot across the longest part. But it could make a cute purse XD

Aww, yeah, that would still be super cute! ^.^ I like it a lot. Is it from your childhood or did you find it somewhere?

It's mine from when I was about 3 years old, but I got it from a family friend who basically started my collection by giving me half of hers. Most of my "obscure merch" is from childhood, though I did recently find one of those board games above in a thrift store!

She might have been the last pony I ever got new from a store. And the blue heart version was part of the first big lot of ponies I bought second-hand maybe 5 years later; that was how I learned about variants. So I have both, and while she's not my favorite, she feels special to me.

If it's just the stains left after cleaning the mold/mildew, sunfading should work.
