Repro stands for Fairy Tails birds--with picture!
« on: October 07, 2015, 10:52:02 AM »
Update:  I now have successfully molded adult Fairy Tails stands as well as the tiny stands for the jewelry birds!  They are tinted with iridescent glitter and come in a range of colors.  I  can now make them in white (not shown) in addition to candy pink, orange, golden yellow, lemon yellow, yellow-green, green, aqua, blue, purple, and pinkish-purple.  There are small imperfections as I work to refine the mold-making and casting process, but they are a nice inexpensive way to display your birds!

Stands are available in my sales thread here: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,339498.0.html

I have been experimenting with casting and have begun making stands for my Fairy Tails birds.  So far I am working from a mold of one of the shorter stands that came with the baby birds, but these work for adults as well.  I plan to create some of the adult stands once I have refined my techniques a bit.  Would there be interest in these if I were to make some for sale or accept commissions?

I would be interested in the bigger stands.  I love the variety of colors!  How much would they be?

Have you had the chance to test them to make sure they are not going to bleed color into the toy vinyl?

Aren't the feet usually hard plastic?

I wish you could figure out how to do the mini ones that came with the jewelry birds. I have some LPS birds that need perches.

Hmm... the feet are hard plastic.  I was just thinking that some pony accessories bleed color onto the pony over time, so I was wondering if these might as well?  It's probably not an issue, just thought I'd ask.  =)

As long as they are sealed it should be alright. As a matter of fact a spray of Dullcote might even fix pony accessories bleeding.

Bleeding was actually one of my primary concerns when I started experimenting with colors.  I suspect even the hard plastic of the feet could pick up pigment, especially as most people want the stands primarily to display their birds. The colored ones will be sealed just to be sure, since I don't know how safe even the professional tints are.

I've actually found a glitter that makes the resin look tinted with flecks of iridescence, which is very pretty and I don't think the color will bleed since it's from glitter embedded in the resin rather than from tiny particles of pigment (see the orange, yellow, light green, light blue, and purple ones in the picture).  The colors aren't the same as the original stands and so far I'm going with translucent rather than opaque tints, but that way the repros won't be confused with the real thing in auction pictures and the like if they are resold.

My goal is to make them inexpensive (why buy a replica that costs almost as much as the real thing?).  I think most of us just want a way to display our birdies!  I am thinking of selling my current production of smaller stands for $2 each, since they are small and the mold is a little imperfect.  I am still working on the bigger stands and will have a better idea of materials costs once I've experimented more.

I have actually thought of doing replicas of jewelry bird accessories as well--will have to work with this a bit more!

Those look really cool! I don't collect Fairy Tail birds- but if I did I would be all over this...

Wow they look gorgeous!! I've wanted to get into resin casting for a similar reason; I want a wide variety of colors!! :) I "casually" collect Fairy Tale birds (if I see them cheap I'll pick them up), but these stands are gorgeous, and I might have to indulge for the small flock I have!

Can I ask how you found casting/mold-making to be? Is it really hard? It looks fun but I'm afraid to take the plunge!! ^^;

I would definitely be interested! I haven't been able to find stands being sold by themselves so all my birds are slouching on their sides. :/

Flat-back resin casting is pretty easy.  3-D molding with a two-part mold is more challenging.  The materials are expensive and for me there has been a degree of trial and error.  I do have some of my smaller FT stands in my sales thread and am making progress on a mold for the larger stands :).
