I'm watching the ticket master on youtube again, and rarity said that blue blood was celestia's nephew... so who's his mom?? o.O she MUST have more sisters than just luna. maybe princess cadence is another sister. but i HIGHLY DOUBT she'd be blue blood's mom. so she's got more sisters?!

I always thought of him as a "fantasy" of Rarity's, meaning she made him up. And then by coincidence there was a pony at the Gala that just happened to look like her fantasy.

And I always thought it was strange that so many viewers assumed that Rarity would fantasize about a member of royalty who didn't exist.  You'd think that who all was in the royal family would be pretty public knowledge, right?  So what happened in "The Best Night Ever" made perfect sense to me: Rarity knew of the prince from what she'd learned while tailoring others for the Grand Galloping Gala, but until she met him, she didn't know what he was really like.

My pet theory was that some time ago when there was a major disaster/war/etc, a lot of her guards rose up and stood by her side even when there was no hope. Then when they finally won, Celestia decided to name those ponies her family and gave them all higher social standing. Eventually through multiple generations, it became an aristocratic title to call yourself a family member title and Prince Blueblood just came from old money, so to speak.

I think that Lauren Faust's original plan was just to make him a duke, but the network said that kids wouldn't recognize the title, so they changed it to "Celestia'a Nephew".
