Title: Let's Talk about Jem and the holograms
Post by: LightingElectricDream on December 28, 2016, 02:26:18 PM
I am already putting this on the table.
Let's not talk about the jem movie.
That topic has been beaten to death.

So let's talk about the cartoon, dolls ect..

So I never grew up with jem but I do recall seeing it around. I didn't like barbie growing up so me being a jem fan when I was a kid was very unlikely.

When I got into mlp back in 2001 I remember dreamvallyacollectorsguidetomylittlepony.com
AKA kims site talking about how she was a jem collector.
So that's how I got a little bit intrested in it. And then when jem and the holograms integrity line came out I just fell in love with it. I wanted an original jem so bad. Bit I can't she'll out that kind of $$$ I did however find a 80s glitter and gold jem at the thrift store. I still need to find out if she works. I also found some nude jem's I passed them up though..kinda wish I didn't but that's ok..I'm not all that Intrested in the vintage ones.

Ah I love the 8ps so much. Kinds gives me a feel good vibe. Even with the black lether jackets and spiked bracelets.

Love the late 80s with all the neon and palm trees animal print ect..

I love that hasbro was bold enugh to make a rock n roll line of toys consittering all the flack that rock and metal and pop where getting back then. Ever see the movie foot loose lol!

I can recall my mom not being thrilled about jem and alot of 80s bands and music ect..

I wonder if barbie where the first to come up with idea or if Hasbrouck was. I read that it came out about the same time so no one really knows. I'd have to say it was jem that came first..just beacuse I just don't feel that barbie and the rockers had as much thought into it or heart. But who knows.

I just bought the cartoon box set of jem.

So what do you like about jem?

P.s again we will never speak of the jem movie.

I love Jem, :) I don't own any dolls but I have the complete series box set of episodes and the light up Jem Star earrings from Running Press. I just ordered the Jem ornament from Hallmark (no hallmark store near me)

It was funny when I first started rewatching the cartoon, I would remember random pieces of the episodes like when Jem refused to take her earrings off at the airport in China or Kimber and Jerrica in the "Always there in My Heart" video.

My favorite characters are Jerrica/Jem, Kimber and Stormer.

Have you read the newish comic book series, yet? It's really good! FYI I have some vintage spare Jem dolls that I wouldn't mind selling/trading if anyone's interested.

I love the 80s cartoon.  I got a chance to meet the voice of Jem (I think her speaking voice, not singing voice) at a nerdy bar / arcade game place this year.  She was really nice and took time to speak to each fan in line for her autograph.

I also ran across the guy who choreographed the animation for the songs at a comic convention.  He said they pretty much gave him free rein to animate "whatever" to go along with the songs, which explains why some of them are so trippy, lol.

I've been meaning to start reading the IDW Jem comic books, I've heard they're very good.

I'm slightly peeved right now because Hasbro made IDW combine all their Hasbro comics into one continuity, except MLP and Jem.  MLP makes sense, it is in a world of its own, not the human world.  But why not include Jem??  It makes more sense than G.I. Joe existing in the same universe as Transformers and NEVER EVER noticing the giant robots literally destroying cities over the years.

On that note, I've always thought the Misfits would make great human sidekicks for the 80s Decepticons.

Hasbro definitely was the one who came up with "rock 'n roll fashion dolls".  Jem was very very popular and Mattel created Barbie & the Rockers to compete.

Ladymoondancer that's awesome you were able to meet Samantha Newark!!  It's crazy how much she sounds like Jem even now :D

I actually love the current comic by IDW although I'm way behind (I like to buy them in books cuz they cost less)

I really liked the cartoon when I was a kid- the singing is surprisingly good and the songs cute and catchy :D  I've watched them more recently on Netflix. I still enjoy it- ridiculous stories yes, but still enjoyable.  They don't make cartoons like THAT anymore!

I've always kinda hated Mattel for stealing the concept of Jem from Hasbro and then rushing to get the Barbie and the Rockers dolls out first... but I think the original dolls also might have failed because they were a lot more expensive than the competition (Barbie) and moms were nervous about their rocker looks (they did not look tame like Barbie).  My mom didn't like them.

The recent Integrity dolls are like a dream come true- they look like the dolls that I always wanted- Plus characters that Hasbro never made- in fashions that are so cartoon accurate and gorgeous that you couldn't commission stuff this good.  The only downside is the price- so high!  I remember when Hollywood Jem was announced for SDCC-  I wanted her bad but was SHOCKED at the price!  $119 for a BARBIE?!

I never thought I'd pay so much for plastic fashion dolls- at first I rationalized it as $119 being no higher than a very well done custom- cheaper even, right?  When I got the dolls in hand I realized they were well worth the price. They are NOTHING like Barbie- they have different sculpts for their faces, articulated joints, are fun to pose, and their clothing is gorgeous and made of beautiful high quality materials with snaps and hooks and leather shoes. The faces are awesome too- they have so much attitude.

I was planning only to get a couple-but then Jem needed her band, and what is Jem without the Misfits?  I thought I was done but then they came out with the Stingers who are really truly the most gorgeous dolls ever (especially Riot and Rapture)

And then they started making characters that Hasbro never even got out of prototype stage!

My wife thinks Jem dolls are "corney" because she was a teen in the 1980s and thinks my dolls look like they are trying WAY too hard to be cool.  She is embarrassed for them on their behalf -  But don't worry- I love them and that's all that matters to them! haha-

They look fabulous displayed too although I have my collection disassembled right now as I'm planning a new "look" for their shelves

Here's a few of them :D

I kinda wish I'd gotten into these dolls later- there have been some really good sales if you keep an eye out on ebay and the Integrity website. http://www.integritytoys.com/shop20/Jem-And-The-Holograms/

What I like most about Jem? Glamour and glitter, fashion and fame? XD
But really, Colorful characters with outrageous hairstyles, a bit more for the mature audience and of course, great music.

I had an old VHS tape with Jem as a kid and I loved it! I watched all the old episodes by now and it's a bit sad that the show ended because it was really getting interesting once The Stingers made their appearance. There was such a potential to continue the cartoon! :)
The old dolls don't impress me much but oh my, those dolls from Integrity Toys!! I want every single one!! <3

I have read a couple of the new comics and they are nice. Very unique redesign of the characters and I'm interested to see where the story will go :)

I'm glad Jem wasn't included in "Revolution", because what would they would've done in the course of the story? Though there is nothing stopping the comic from being absorbed into the greater Hasbro continuity, but I'm glad JEM gets to keep being it's own thing.

You know what, JEM's critical success is probably what encouraged IDW/Hasbro to dredge up their obscure/dead properties and start building up these IPs and hoping for multiple lighting strikes.

Also, I always thought the Dreadnoks from G.I. Joe would make great roadies for The Misfits.

I should also point towards the (brief) Jem article from the Transformers wiki;

Cartoon was pretty fun and I love the fashions, it's really too bad Hasbro cancelled the franchise way too soon. Especially since things were starting to become more exciting during season 3.

The Integrity Toys dolls are already extremely expensive but I can't find any decent quality Hasbro 80s dolls reasonably priced on ebay either. They are also very expensive now. It's annoying.

I've already read the most recent issue of the IDW comic but I still can't say I like it. The different artists styles are too jarring and in terms of writing and characterization the comic takes itself way too seriously, and is too down-to-earth to be entertaining, and feels like something completely unrelated to the Jem franchise altogether IMO.
What was great about the Jem cartoon was how ridiculous(to the point of being unintentionally funny) it was. The comic just does not have that.

I have not seen the movie but everything I have heard about it was not good.

Hasbro really could have done waaay more (and better) to revive the franchise IMO.

Its an awesome show and the dolls have made me want dolls and I don't do dolls ever! Of course Integrity is too rich for my blood and Hasbro didn't bother making affordable options for the kiddies who were being introduced to classic Jem on the hub and boxset. Boo. I love how empowering and exciting and funny crazy it gets. I'd say its got almost as much action as GI Joe.

I loved Jem as a kid. I had a couple of the dolls. (I had Barbie and Dana dancing action Barbie and the Rockers too.) The cartoon was on Netflix. Not sure if it's still there. I watched a few episodes. I'd love to get the line by Integrity Toys, but they're a little too much for me right now.

It's a sad thing but one of the longest running fan mailing lists that I am aware of for a 1980s toy line died a death this December when the admins shut it down. Christy Marx was on that mailing list, and she was very good about discussing characters and answering questions. Because of that I even have copies of two or three of the episode scripts and it's so fun seeing what was left out or changed between that and the production. I think I have Talent Search 1 & 2, Britrock...I forget what else. Maybe Stingers Hit Town, not sure.

I'm a Misfit fan. I like the Holograms, too. Can't stand Jem or Rio. Pretty much everyone else is fine with me. I used to have Jem/Jerrica in my collection and I found I was losing interest in them. I then realised that I only should have the collection I want, not the expected collection and didn't need to have those characters even if they are the main characters from the show. I just had so much issue with Jem's hypocrisy and the fact Rio two times her with herself - and at least once, with her other self, Jamie, which must be a record.

I just shifted my cabinet around to put away some of the fashions and make room to put the IT dolls inside because they were getting dusty, but this is what my collection did look like before this break:

http://www.etherella.com/photoshoot/

My favourite characters are Jetta, Stormer and Synergy. But the prettiest doll in my opinion is 2nd Edition Shana. Specifically this one:

because I rescued her. She was really messed up and had no accessories and her hair was a messy knot but she has the prettiest expression so she's special to me.

Kimber was my first doll. I actually bought her to trade to Prance in Canada (Pranceatron vs Jem, great Jem website, one of the best) and then I saw Truly Outrageous and somehow Kimber never left.

But I really do like the Misfits better ;) These are my special Misfits.

I made 3 of the outfits and a friend made Roxy's. I went through a whole phase of making a lot of the outfits from the show because the Misfits didn't have enough outfits already. Especially Jetta ones, because she had none...

Oh yeah. I also have a big thing about the Mexican made dolls. I guess Jem's equivalent Nirvana is Spanish and Mexican Jem, but I love the Mexican ones. They're so crazy...

http://www.etherella.com/photoshoot/mexicoll.htm

The IT dolls are amazing! But yeah, I agree, so expensive. I decided originally I was only getting the ones that Hasbro never made as proper dolls in the old lines. Plus the Misfits. I've more or less stuck to that, although I thought I was done and then they decide to bring out Graphix. I won't get her, though, she's a club exclusive, so I guess I am done. I love that they made Eric and Craig. Eric had to happen. It was about time he did.

But when Regine, Danse, Clash and Video came out it was insane. Regine and Danse were literally sold out within the first day. And now some of them their prices are double the retail which is sad...

Another amazing Jem site is Brian's Totally Jem. Because it has pretty much every prototype thing you can imagine on it. Most of the old Jem stuff is in the community now. A Jem friend of mine got the autographs of Ellen Bernfeld and Anne Bryant for me, and someone else got me the autograph of Patricia Albrecht but pretty much all of the Jem former cast, people, etc have been in contact with someone in the Jem fandom unless they have passed away (which sadly several have). It's a bit different from MLP in that way in that fans have had a much deeper connection with all of the old stuff from the line and the people involved, which is brilliant.

OMG that Shana is GORGEOUS!

I didn't even know about the mailing list- I knew about Jemcon.org- but it was really slow there for the last few years and then when the admin restructured the site- I think most remaining people got lost. Now it's basically abandoned.  But I know they still do the convention every year- which is cool.  I am totally going this year because it will be in Seattle!!!!!!!  WHOOOOO

I do love Brian's Totally Jem page-http://totallyjem.jemmagic.com/
That's the one, right? He has some amazing prototype photos and info (not just of Jem but other lines too)

For sure some of the Integrity dolls were more highly demanded than others- ESPECIALLY Danse, Regine and Astral because they were fan favorites- and of course Classic Jem (because duh, everyone wants the main doll) It was great they came out with Shopbop Jem to relieve some of the desperation for a classic Jem.

I didn't think Video was that hard to find actually- I have an extra if anyone is searching- you can have her at cost- I don't know why I bought two, I was going slightly crazy with Jem fever I guess...)

I'm in the wclub so I did get Graphix- but I know a lot of people got her who aren't Jem people or who were on the fence, so hopefully she won't be too hard to find.

What has happened with those dolls in the past is that you get scalpers and the prices are double what retail would be. And exchange rate sucks xD.

No kidding on Regine and Astral, they should've made more. Regine came up a lot on ebay from scalpers who bought her with the advance membership and then put her up there so that was a problem. I was super lucky with Regine and Danse because there was literally one left of each in a store in France and the shipping put people off...but France is real close to the UK so not such an issue ;) And no customs fees, yay :)

Astral I had to get loose and in bits. I still don't have her hat, but given her price, I'll take what I have. Synergy is the other one I missed out on, but she's way too expensive now so I'll stick with my old ones :)

Really glad I don't like Jem because the price of Classic Jem got mad. I saw one at $900 or so...

Graphix looks cool but I can't pay $200+ for a doll right now ><

Yep, that's the site I meant ;) THe mailing list I think had been running 20 years when it closed. Very sad day...

I'd love to help you out but the club price for her is $130 - so even if I found someone who was willing to let me take her over for you (or sometimes Integrity has a few extra if you email them right away) shipping from Integrity to me, and then to you-  definitely $200 by that time.  :P

Haha, thank you for the thought at least ;) It's fine. I don't need her so badly that I can't do without her if I never get her. I'll wait and see if one day one comes up at a price I can afford her. Otherwise I probably don't have space anyway. Clash is already edged out of the cabinet because I don't have room for her there.

Here in the UK it used to be on a Saturday morning during the summery 80s that the Jem cartoons were shown! I loved the theme tune and the oh so 80s opening credits, lots of pink lipstick, BIG hair and bright costumes!

I used to buy the 80s Jem comic too - from issue 1 - they are squirrelled away somewhere... it has been years since I have seen them, though.

I found a clutch of dolls earlier this year in a charity shop - a single Jem and some very "baity" Misfits - alas, I was not too interested in getting them as I thought it would be too much effort to restore / re-dress etc. Hmm maybe I should have got them!

What are some of your favorite songs from the show?
There was this one Misfits song I really liked but can't remember what its called or which episode.

Only the Beginning is catchy
Twilight in Paris
Its a Hard, Hard Life
Let Me Be
the original intro, never liked the second one as much
Music is Magic
I Like Your Style

I wish we'd gotten more Stingers songs honestly

Warning, long geek post coming up. So many loved songs..;)

The Stingers have amazing songs. Especially Destiny because it features all of them, not just Riot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pkifMPzqcw
(RIP Vicki Sue "Rapture" Robinson. Amazing voice)
That was always my favourite of theirs. Hard Hard Life probably second.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9gvoujTVfU
But the Stingers songs are great. Don't like the characters, but their music was great. And come on, any group that can rhyme stipulation and intimidation in a kid's show has to get kudos. (Mind Games)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIslDJZAxxg

I think if I remember right they got the effect of Riot's voice by making the same guy sing the songs through in two octaves and then merging them to get the unique sound. (Gah, Im going to miss that mailing list since all kinds of info came out on it)

I hated the Stingers being used as the group pushing the Misfits out of the show (which was the intention as "parents complained" about the Misfits or something stupid. BUT as villains they were well constructed with the background and the individual issues/talents.

Misfit-wise
-
Universal Appeal,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXOiT5nBmGw
Designin' Woman..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBZwMzLkHAk
(Jetta isn't in that one but it's on her doll cassette so I think of it as "hers" somehow)
I also liked Queen of Rock N Roll...(Roxy's awesome bass xD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35ZbrsFWqMQ
and It Takes Alot (To Survive)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aZNaN8Z5EE
And then from the Jetta era:
I like your Style:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0NCju1CzeI
Trapped (just for the sax solo xD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwIuEi4dLqc
Free and Easy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeCg4MA9eg0

There are some other amazing Misfit songs from season 2 but I wish they had used Jetta's sax as much as they used her character...

Jem wise - Beat This
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VON_lBtq6EM
She's Got The Power (Synergy, ne xD),
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S4W262boHo
She Makes an Impression:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAI936153HE

I also loved Roxy's song (I'm Gonna Change)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BotNmNULwwA
and I'm Okay (Kimber & Stormer).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iinCliptuFY

Plus this one, for the Misfit feels :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulzz6BGynjo

Songs I hate:
Open a Book:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIcXxjyUx58
Especially in this episode because it wouldn't happen in modern times. You can't just tell someone who can't read to go read a book and open their mind. Not when there are so many people who struggle to do that because of legit reasons like dyslexia. I think in modern terms Roxy would be considered dyslexic, and that song is just not right.

Freedom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-ut9avH6cw
Aside from being really patronising to international viewers, this song is Sunbow's irony to the world. How can you have this song at the end of an episode in which the FBI pursue JATH to take Synergy as a "national risk" when Synergy is just privately owned stage equipment..?

KJEM:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O5LTC-PLBA
Really? "Don't forget the news and weather?" Plus they forgot Raya for half of this video. Awkward...

I don't know what my favourite episode was. But the worst episode by a mile was Renaissance Woman. As a history major it just makes me want to curl up and cry.

Queen of Rock n Roll is the one I was trying to remember! Thanks taffeta!

I personally think the stingers had the best songs of the bunch. Had no idea parents were complaining about The Misfits. But I agree that the Stingers brought their own unique spin to the show. And Riot does have a heart...when his massive ego isn't getting in the way.

Isn't renaissance woman the obligatory time travel one? haha, that one wasn't too bad to me because I still giggle madly whenever Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is on. Plus I get to see Tech Rat freak out.

Was Tech Rat voiced by Chris Latta? I know Sunbow used the same voice actors for hasbro properties.

Yay :D Glad to be of help! It's an obscure song in an obscure episode but it rocks!
It was also supposed to replay in another episode but it didn't. One of the scripts I have it's mentioned but was cut by the time the episode was made. It might have been Britrock. I remember "I'm Gonna Hunt You Down" in that ep, and "Between Me & You" (ah, that's another of Jem's cringy ones, "yeah, it absolutely doesn't matter that you're an earl and you're rich and stuff...") but only 2 songs, not 3. I am pretty sure Queen of R&R was meant to get a replay in that ep but got cut. Probably due to time...

Hmmmmm what I remember most about Jem is that I was forbidden to watch it.  Along with Ninja Turtles.  Also MOTU - either He-Man or She-Ra.

That poor pet fox.

Pretty sure it got the last laugh. I have mixed feelings about that video. I love the Misfits. I find Jetta and Roxy's antics in it -falling off horses, catching in nets - hilarious as they don't have a clue. I hate fox hunting. But the fox gets the best of them, so it's all good in the end. At least they didn't have hounds. That wouldve made it unreasonably unpleasant.

Just a really ugly thing to choose as symbolic of upper middle class rural British life.

I have a lot of favorite Jem songs but my absolute favorites are

The first Jem Theme

Only the Beginning

Twilight in Paris

Like a Dream

Truly Outrageous (long version)

Music is Magic

Always There in My Heart

What's that song that Jem and the Holograms sing that starts "Tell me I'm crazy...  I never liked that one.

I also didn't like Renaissance Woman or Mid Summer Night's Madness.

I think I was too young for Jem.  I was born in 84, I can't remember when Jem was out though.  I do have the complete series I bought at F.Y.E. and I fell in love with it.  I think I was more into MLP and Care Bears at the time.  I did collect barbies like crazy and if I had been in to Jem I probably would have had some Jem dolls but like I said I didn't watch it back then.

The very last episode was sad for me.  I liked how the little girl (can't remember her name) finally found her Dad and everyone was saying goodbye to her but I think everyone was also saying goodbye to the fans who were watching the show.  It reminded me of the end of MLP the movie, and I know after that movie originally aired there would be more MLP episodes on TV but to me it still felt like the end of MLP not sure why.  I have all the episodes and the movie on DVD (and MLP Tales) but every time I see the end of MLP The Movie it makes me sad.

I agree about the first Jem theme being better.  The second theme didn't seem to fit.

Tell me I'm crazy..I think it's I believe in Happy Endings from The Fan.

The reason I remember that is that one of the UK vhs tapes, a batch anyway had a really bad soundtrack on it. And it resulted in weiiird versions of the songs. So when that gets mentioned, I think of "wonky endings"...

http://www.etherella.com/britrock/surprise.htm

Can find the link for it here if you want a laugh ;)

I remember Christy Marx saying that the final ep (the girl is Banee) was kind of a hurried decision. They had introduced a bunch of new characters including Astral and Regine and had a line planned for the year but Jem got cut suddenly and so that was the last ep. A lot of the fans asked her why Banee and her father since it was such an odd way to end it, but apparently that was just how she chose to do it.

I wish it had been a proper finale type story for the three bands but somehow the song "Now" at the end of Stingers Hit Town 2 is more of that for them although so much is not settled at the end of that episode.

Thanks Taffeta. :)

I liked that Banee found her father but doesn't that contradict one of the Starbright episodes where Banee was going blind and Jerrica said they didn't have any idea who Banee's parents were?

I also thought it was funny in  The Stingers hit Town that when all of the people in the club were starting to riot and destroy things Riot told everyone to sit back down and Jerrica said "They're sitting down because he asked them to?"

I was looking through the archive of the now defunct mailing list for what Christy said about the final ep but haven't found it yet. I did find this, though, which is a bunch of Q&A from Ask Christy going back to discussions ten, twenty years ago:

https://tojarchives.wordpress.com/2016/12/01/ask-christy-volume-2-january-december-1997/

There are a lot more like this in this archive because the admin of the list compiled them into this blog before she closed it down - she didn't want all the information to be lost to the community. There shouldn't be any bad language or offensive stuff though it did get heated around the time of the You Know What so I won't guarantee it. The main page is:

I hope it's ok to share it :)

I love Jem and the Holograms! When I was a kid I would run home everyday after school cause it started at 4. As a kid I had some dolls; I remember Snergy, Jetta and GnG Jem for sure.

Favourite songs?

Universal Appeal, Misfits
Friend or Stranger, JatH
Like a Dream, JatH
I Am a Giant, Misfits.

I loved the episodes where Kimber and Stormer team up and when Roxy leaves the Misfits. The characters all seemed very moved by what was happening which went against everthing cartoons were in those days.

And, finally, about a month ago I scored 13 old school Jem dolls (almost one of each character minus Jetta and Clash) plus shoes and clothes for all and some instruments for $95 NZD, those ladies look fabulous and they all have been extremely well cared for, hair is not frizzy, no marks on the dolls only one broken joint out of the whole lot.  When they first came in the mail I just sort of hugged them for a few minutes haha.

I know its not a popular opinion but I just dont like the look of the integrity toys dolls, they look waspish and sharp which to me as a kid was what Barbie was, Jem dolls seemed softer, more, I dont know how to say it really; the big head and legs that didnt end in pegs just made the dolls seem so much nicer and the Integrity dolls just (to me) dont convey that same feeling.  Also theyre so expensive, I doubt I'll ever have enough spare cash to justify buying one

One of the things I like about Jem is that it not only had a really diverse cast, but it was obvious that the writers actually did research when they were portraying different countries.  And since this was in the 80s, research took more effort than it would now that we have the internet.

Like, I like G1 Transformers, but their portrayal of other countries reminds me of a quote from Bill Watterson who said he liked writing about Calvin's school reports because "I didn't need to know any more than a lazy six year old."

As the resident of one such country I'd have to both agree and disagree on the amount that they did. I think it depends on the writer. (I also know people in Croatia who are quite offended by the episode set in Yugoslavia).

But just looking at the representation of Britain, because it's something I can look at, you have a total contrast between Britrock and Renaissance Woman, for example.

Britrock does include a lot of things you could recognise as British, albeit highly stereotypical. There are some issues - you don't inherit a title at a set time on a 21st birthday, and Mason would already be Earl in name, if not in controlling interest, from the moment he was born. The title of "Lady Wissex" is also incorrect, she's the Countess if her husband is the Earl. But those are tiny things that basically work to the plot. The bigger problem in Britrock is the fact that Jetta is supposed to come from Hull. She says it herself, at one point, and Christy has said she was meant to be from the North. She's not. Culturally speaking she and her parents are both very much Londoner or South Eastern. Gatwick is a London airport and they take a car from there to Wissex. Wissex doesn't exist, but counties that have that suffix are in the south east, too - Essex, Sussex, Middlesex. The ancient country of Wessex was also down there. So Britrock succeeds in a lot of ways (if you ignore the accents of most of the characters, Jetta excluded) but fails in that it portrays all of England as though it were the South East. And culturally that's wrong. (I always see Jetta as a Londoner because you can't see her any other way from what is depicted on the show).

Renaissance Woman, on the other hand, is totally different. As a historian as well it drove me nuts, but it's just stupid from start to finish. First you have a Renaissance Fair. Never heard of those before. Second, you have a pseudo Robin Hood figure appearing in this fair - but the concept Robin Hood belongs to a pre-Renaissance era, so that's wrong. Most stupid of all, though, is the idea that the area, Carfax I think? is feudal, there's a baron and local indentured peasantry who are being oppressed. The writer of that episode completely ignored the existence of the industrial revolution ;)

The idea is obviously to create a story with homage to the Robin Hood tale, with Danse as Maid Marian, but realistically the story doesn't make any sense and it doesn't represent 1980s Britain in any way, shape or form.

I don't think that Jem is terrible at presenting other countries. But I don't think it's overly great at it at times, either. And I know that Christy fought really hard to get a proper voice artist for Jetta to really make her British. Every other British voice in the show is terrible, and they are all would-be cockney, which is a London accent that has no place whatsoever in rural Carfax.

So I would say that, for my country, yes and no. Depending on the episode. And the accents are almost universally terrible.

Renaissance Woman was weird because halfway through everyone seemed to forget they weren't LITERALLY IN THE PAST.

Renaissance Faires are a thing (at least in America), they involve dressing up in ye olden timey clothes, but also have people dressed up as elves and things like that.  I don't think anyone really cares if the clothes / activities are actually "renaissance era".  They usually have jousting, for example.  And archery contests.

Haha- in all fairness though -  Renaissance fairs are definitely a thing in the US and people DO oddly enough dress up as everything you can think of including Robin Hood characters (fairly common actually) to World of Warcraft or D&D characters- and lately I have seen a TON of pirates! None of which have anything to do with the Renaissance era of course :D

Basically anything goes although you are generally looked down on if you show up in jeans...

Er, it is possible I go to something like a Ren Faire every year (we go to Fairieworlds which is essentially the same thing)

But yeah- as LadyMoondancer mentions- it was super weird that the characters seem to forget at some point they are not actually in the past... I guess they REALLY get into character ?

Agreed. But my point is, Renaissance Fairs are an American thing but this was set in the UK. And we don't have them, as far as I am aware. And if we did, people here don't generally think of the Renaissance and Robin Hood as going together, because they frankly don't. In this country you might get county fairs in rural areas, or you sometimes get battle reenactments or mock-jousting tournaments with some kind of mediaeval reference, or stuff like that. And of course in November we stuff an effigy, stick it on a bonfire and burn it, which can often be a community event. But I've never heard of a Reinaissance fair here. That's what I meant about the episode having a very shoddy grasp of British life.

I totally agree that they lost the plot halfway through though, and blurred whether they were in a Fair or in the past. Which is where the problem of feudalism comes in and gets totally misunderstood.

The only saving grace about that episode is that we find out Raya's good at archery. And they bother so little to give us anything about Raya past her intro ep and the gratuitous "Mexican trip" ep that any little detail is welcome in my view.

But yeah, not all the episodes are well researched. And not all the writers are Roger Slifer or Christy Marx's calibre.

You can have an amazing bad episode, though, such as the Shangrila one, which is totally ridiculous but amazingly funny. And then you can just get a bad episode like Ren. Woman. :-/.

Ahh I just got into the original cartoon over Xmas break, but I had been reading the IDW comics since November 2015 upon seeing a bootleg of the lackluster movie. Halfway through season 1, but more binge-watching to come! I like both of the vintage and the Integrity dolls, though I like Integrity a bit more because they look like the characters from the cartoon.

Oh it was supposed to be in the UK? Yeah- that's not really very plausible- I guess though they were counting on most people (except for those in the UK) to not know that...

But seriously- how did people research things like that before the internet?

Now I need to rewatch this episode- it's been way too many years!

I think you just summed up the whole problem with the episode xD.  It's not even clear xD. But the terrible TERRIBLE accents sort of give it away.

@Shaymin - you have some great eps to look forward to. I personally think that on the whole season 2 is the better, because you get a lot more expansion on the background on several of the characters.

Actually, Aja is the one who really doesn't get any of that. She gets the "Starlight Girl" thing and the episode in China, which has nothing to do with her own family. I just realised that Kimber gets a ton of attention this way, Jerrica does, too. Shana gets the whole episode with the design job and although it isn't her background, it does explore her character. And Raya might get neglected later but she's very well drawn out in Talent Search. Poor old Aja gets no such attention.

Season 2 gives good backstory for all four of the Misfits. At least, with Stormer it's more family, fleshing her out, giving her more emphasis as a character and changing the nuance of her role in the group a bit. Roxy has an episode. Jetta has an episode. Pizzazz has Father's Day, too. Even Clash and Video get a background flash.

What on earth did poor Aja do to get left out?

She had that romance going on with Stormer's brother, she got shoved into the luggage compartment of the bus, she was pretty sarcastic and her braininess and natural suspicion let her catch onto some plots.

Yeah, but what I mean is, they could have explored a lot more about her background. You can pick out a lot about her character and her relationship with Craig is pretty nice because it's complicated, but I feel like there's more in her that we could've seen. She certainly never had what I would call an Aja episode, unless you count China, which was so early on it really just seemed to be a cultural reference.

Jem was not huge for me, but she was watched. I did not remember her until I rewatched the show on Netflix.  I got the Hallmark ornament....I do keep an eye out for them. I was not a huge barbie fan. I rearranged my Jem cabinet over the Christmas break so that my IT dolls could go inside it (I am trying to pretend IT didn't bring out Stormer and Kimber BBU dolls and absolutely didn't match up the outfits with the wrong dolls to try and get people to buy more Stormer dolls they already have, because I can't afford any more IT dolls...sigh...) Now I have had to put some of my vintage doll wear away and I have yet more spare stuff to get rid of in the case of nude vintage dolls who were being used as clothes horses. It's such a pain not being able to sell stuff because I spend most of the time 3 hours or more away from where my stuff is...

The Jem movie was on here over Xmas. I recorded it, but have yet to watch it (again, 3 hours from my stuff...and my recording TV...)

If the comic is ending, I'm sad for the fans of it, but I'm actually a bit relieved if it means Jem can go back to her vintage bubble where, honestly, I think she belongs. I know that's a selfish viewpoint but it's how I tend to feel about the show and the storyline after all the attempts to update and modernise.

But then again Jem has never been a long-term project at any point in its history. In a way, what the fans have done to fill the gaps inbetween are almost more of Jem now than the original. That's why the series is still going strong 30 years later...and why the movie will die a death of oblivion because it wasn't even released officially in cinemas in many countries.

So awesome that Jem (along with MOTU and Shera) are now on our Netflix too. Waiting for more 1980s classics to show up there...

^ This!

I want a full-blown 80s-fest of 80s glam-pop + fashions, a movie that embraces all this (and gives cosplayers an excuse to wear some funky costumes!) I think it would be awesome!

The only weird thing would be how the storyline translates to a modern audience what with Rio being a bit naughty...  :P

I'm sad and yet a little bit relieved that this will be the final year for the Integrity Jem dolls.  They have been epic and gorgeous- but there have been so many now!  I'm glad the line is ending rather then devolving into stuff I never actually really wanted.

Very curious to see what the final four will be though... I really hope they do a plastic synergy console- that would be a dream come true...
