Light Box woes
« on: August 22, 2022, 03:24:26 AM »
I'm so frustrated.

Years ago, I made a pretty decent light box out of cardboard, contact paper and tissue paper. I kept it in my closet out of the way and when I needed it it was easy to pull out, take the pictures, and put back. Well. I threw it away in a fit of depression induced rage. I wish I hadn't done that! I've been unable to make a light box like that one since, even using the same materials. I just can't get it to look good.

I have also bought two "desktop" light tents that both fold away and into a bag but they are so hard to fold omg. And they really aren't desktop sized, they are pretty darn big. So big I was thinking of using one as an airbrushing tent instead. I don't have anywhere to keep the smaller one (which is still big) out and unfolded but I dread trying to fold it back into its bag so I don't like to use it at all.

I also bought a cheap white sheet set off Amazon, thinking I could drape the flat sheet over a chair or something and just use that for a nice clean background, but that doesn't work out either, or I haven't found the right place yet.

What do YOU use as a light box? Did you make one? Buy one?

My next idea is to use the sheet inside and over the edges of a box. I have to make it removable though so I can wash it. Cat hair doesn't take long to find white fabric.

I have one of those twist and fold light tents and while it's okay it's warped (skews to one side). It's also not that easy to fold, plus having to use magnets to keep the white backdrop up is a pain and having to prop a book under it to keep figures stable again a pain. I attempted to make one with Picture frames from dollar tree years ago but it hasn't worked out either (nor has the cardboard box version LOL)

I fully admit I own a Crayola "Disney Princess" Tracing Tray, with AA batteries to power the light!  ;D
Hey look it was like $15 and I figured that was worth an experiment considering the cost of art supplies.

My desk is next to a big window too. I was thinking of trying the sheet here, put it over my monitor and speakers and let it lay on the desk. But I think the sides would be seen in a pic. I'll have to try it and see.

I use white poster board that has a bit of a sheen to it and that helps to bounce light.

I've never used one, but I'm getting some cool tips from this thread! I probably should have bought one before I quit Best Buy, they have basic small ones in the photo department. Probably would have been dirt cheap with the discount...
