Fun with Acetone
« on: January 30, 2013, 08:19:55 PM »
hee hee hee.... I bought my first tub of acetone today.... my my my - it is mighty handy for getting rid of a few stubborn marks    Certainly quicker than a magic eraser which is my usual best friend.

Before I get trigger happy though... there's no known side effect from acetone use though, right? (aside from obviously avoiding painted areas).

And on an aside, the main reason I bought it was because we are busy re-decorating/fixing up the last parts of our house at the mo, which has involved pulling up some manky carpet in our back room. The glue on the floor is INCREDIBLE (we want to polish the floors like throughout the rest of our house). We've tried one product thus far, but today I bought the acetone just to see if there is any marked difference in getting rid of this disgusting residue on our floor.

I left a message for my hubby for when he gets home to show it's effectiveness thus far

I got down at Placemakers   :)   The brand was 'Andrews' and I got 1L for just $12.30(NZ).  It was down in the paint section  ;)

Aw, cute message. :)

I've read that leaving plastic exposed to acetone for too long can destroy it.  When you rub it on the pony, such a small bit covers the area so it dries quickly, but if there's too much or you accidentally forget that you had one soaking, it could be a problem.

Cool - thanks ApertureScience - that's good to know  :)

...and yeah... nothing says love like gunky glue... (or getting on your hands and knees together scraping the awful stuff from your floor!  XD)

Make sure you do it in a well-ventilated area and you don't breath too much in. It's not too dangerous, just be cautious.

Definitely be careful with how much you use since it can eat at the plastic. Think of how strong it had to be to get that glue off! Be sure to wash it off of the area you use it on too as to make sure that it doesn't destroy the plastic over time.

Also, your little floor message is really cute!

I agree with Rachel-Eyes, right after you finish with the acetone on the pony go wash the whole thing off with soap. Also remember if you don't was it off well then when you paint on it the paint will not stick :)

Wash the pony when you are done and it should be fine. That floor note is too funny. And I'm afraid acetone does nothing for cancer, except maybe kill it if it IS caused by mold or whatever that weird thing BC found in her research was. It won't change the appearance of it though.

Hey - these replies have been really helpful - thanks so much everyone  :)  There was a lot more to acetone than I realised - hope others have been able to learn as much as me just now!

Thanks again!
