A disclaimer: This will not be a cute swap! The point of this swap, is to take someone's persona/favorite pony and transform it into a terrifying, horrifying monster- at least as much as you can with a plastic pony.
Like last time, I plan to pair people both by the level of scary they want, and the skill they've shown in their previous customs. The levels will be broken down into spooky for customs that only give you the woogies a little, kreepy for ones that are a bit disturbing, and gory for ones with blood and the like.
Even if you're only wanting/making a spooky pony, still avoid being cutesy. The swap will have a work time of about 4 months, with two check ins to help me monitor their progress.
This is a skill based swap! You will need to have done at least two other ponies, and preferably some sculpting. If you've done work on non-pony mediums, PM me some pictures and we can talk. Now, on to the specifics/info.
Sign ups: starting May 11th 9th to June 1st, 3 weeks to sign up
Partners sent by the 4th
Work time: June 4th- Oct 8th.
Check ins: August 3rd
Check In: September 7th
Ship date: Oct 8th/9th
To Qualify: At least two customs finished, and at least three feedbacks, or a personal reference from someone else on the forum. If you don’t have this, give me an extra way to contact you, so I can be sure to pester if needed.

Sending you my pm sign up! Could you put this thread on the Handy Dandy Swap Listings? I've been watching on there, and it was only when I read the last post on the gauging interest thread that I figured out that you have opened sign ups.
I am thinking I want either a ghost/phantom or vampiress version of my ponysona, although a banshee version would rock too.

I have certain limitations based around a phobia of mine. (necro-phobia- fear of dead things) So I can't handle actual fur/glass eyes/taxidermy/snake skin/rabbit feet/ect. Does that make sense? I do enjoy the creepy side of life. But things that are exaggerated as such that they don't resemble actual dead things. Do you think I would be ill suited for this swap? Everything but the gore category looks fine for me I just don't want my partner to feel like they are too restricted.

I put on my form that I wouldn't mind making a gory pony for my partner but I requested a spooky/creepy pony in a ghost or vampire style. I don't mind being restricted as a partner, it's a fun challenge either way. Sometimes I wish swap partners were more specific, so many fun ideas for ponies!! I think there's probably a lot of room for you in this, but only Doombunnies knows for sure...

Naw, I think so long as you worked for maybe a plant based monster slash non undead and/or were sure to repost all of this in the 'Do not want' section you'd be fine. Personally, I think it'd be a good challenge to work around.

It's true I do love were creatures! Awesome I will sign up then. I just wanted to make sure. I don't always do well with the imitation dead things. And I would hate to have to bury the pony in my yard or something. It's hard when you have a real phobia. Certain things, and I don't always know what, give me panic attacks. :)

I would file Silent Hill under gruesome/gorey.
I think most of the pix I just posted, plus the creatures everyone has posted would be under creepy/spooky.

For me, the main differences in categories are that Spooky things are only a bit off putting and scary, while Kreepy things are more the ones that pop into your head when its dark and chilly outside- definitely not what you want to see just before going to bed. Gorey is the straight up blood and guts things.
But, what other people find Spooky, Kreepy, or Gorey can differ, which is why I keep them kind of ambiguous and try not to define each group too much. And woot to all the inspiration pics, and Barlowe- I have both his 50 best Guide to Extraterrestrial and Fantasy character books.

Question: I want my ponysona monsterfied, but if someone doesn't (say they want to add to their Minty army with an undead hellbeast version of a Minty or something like that) can they request a Hasbro based pony or is this strictly a ponysona thing?

I think it can just be a pony you like if you don't wanted a twisted ponysona. But I don't know how true to minty it would be if that makes sense. Using your example in your preferences you might want to include you want a mod that is still recognizably minty themed.

It's a persona swap, BUT if you'd rather have a Hasbro pony then I'm cool with that. After all, some people use Hasbros as their personas. And jwalraven, sculpting is more or less required, but feel free to show me an example or two of what you've done, or throw something together in a PM and we can talk.

Nope. It's not. Lol. It was filmed around where I grew up and the creepy abandoned amusement park in the movie was where I went to prom and it was every bit that creepy. I wish I had known about Carnival of Souls, I might have gone as a drowned undead person. Anyway, I was going to tell my partner that if the wanted to do a ponysona based off that movie, I'd go for that too ;)
Let's see, professional organist girl who doesn't know she died in a car crash, sleazy boarding house guy, creepy undead dancing people... jog your memory? It's a low-budget B&W cult classic and actually the inspiration for the Night of the Living Dead.

I want to buy the Rifftrax version of it because they are so funny making fun of it. I love bad movies with the Rifftrax/MST3K guys mocking the movie. So good. They also make a great Riff of Twilight. I had my family over to watch and we were on the ground laughing so hard.
I can't wait for my partner!! I'm getting so excited like the night before Christmas when I was a kid. I have an idea, but it really depends on what my partner asks for.

That is odd. :) I like the really original monster coming up. They are so different from the typical notion of creature horror. This is gonna be a great swap. Since its a persona swap I was thinking most folks would use the basic color scheme of the persona, is that wrong?
My sonas is a mid to dark red. But if the red doesn't fit with the warped design don't stress. I think we all expect a little artistic liberty with these.

I more so meant Dolly Hair colors. Because there are many different shades of colors, and I know sometimes people can like one shade of the hair, but absolutely hate another.

I will say that I had a little trouble with the innerds of the pony pulling away from the plastic on my last zombie pony. A metal skeletal structure really helped to keep the form so I could work around everything without worry about the plastic shifting and cracking something. But I was using an over based clay and I did do multiple fires on the base/bones/organs. So that could have been part of it. Multiple fires are so tricky.

Oh, and I agree with the hair color question, sometimes it's not super clear in one's ponysona :biggrin: Mine has dark brown or auburn I think DH roasted almond is closeish. And she has a dark red stripe, I used Cherry Pie when making my ponysona custom but I wish she had a darker shade of red. :)

To my partner:
I haven't made a custom of my pony yet so I don't have any solid choices on hair colors. But I am guessing Pomme D'Amor, Volcano, and Garnet Jewel should work. :) If you have decided other colors would work better, go right ahead and you can tell me what you used when this is all over.

I have some definite ideas for my pony now... and a few Phantom inspired ideas too. On a related note, Love Never Dies is hilariously fanfictiony. And kind of terrible.
On hair colors, I usually use sugarberry, poison ivy, and after midnight nylon.

As I got a zombie version of my persona in the last swap I asked for either a G1 Nightglider or a Baby Sapphire in this swap. Nightglider's hair color is Virgin Snow I think and Baby Sapphire's is... Forget Me Not? I think that might be the correct one. Feel free to modify the hair colors to fit the design :)

For a demon I would darken the colors, maybe add some horns, pointed wings and make the eyes blood red or something like that. Of course if you want to avoid clichés and still make an easily recognizable demon the job is a lot harder :blush:

I was thinking about this too I have drawn a variation of the cutie mark but it may not work with the design I have in mind
As for me, I am ok either way. If the design doesn't really allow a symbol it's no problem. :)
Edit: My fav hasbro pony is G1 sparkle baby north star, but I like Fluttershy.

My design so far has the cutie mark somewhere on the pony, but not on the rump. I may change it depending on what color I have to make the pony (hard to explain why and not give out too many details). Basically, I want to still have the pony recognizable as the ponysona. If the color is different (due to the monster) then I think I'll have to keep the cutie mark where it is. If I do keep the color, then I can play with the cutie mark's placement.
As for my pony, you are welcome to do what you want with it, I'd like it to be recognizable as my ponysona though :)

My favorite Hasbro is the Pony Bride, because out of the ones I had when I was younger she was always the Queen, and I've been kind of working at restoring her off and on since I started customizing, because while I kept her symbols perfect? My friend offered to 'clean' her and acetoned part of one of her birds.
As for my cutiemark... while her cutie mark is traditionally procreating jellybeans, if you just wanted to do a small hamster creature soomewhere on her it'd still work for me. Otherwise her design's pretty interchangeable, though I'd like her hair to stay the sameish because I adore the colors I picked. They can be tweaked however, so long as she still comes off as my Jellybeans.

to answer the question myself: i´m still new to swaps itself. to be honest, i just expect the custom pony. i often send sweets to others, but the main focus is on the custom for me. ^^
for sweets or such, i guess i like nearly everything. just not white chocolate. oh, and i love tea! how about including tea in a swap box? :D

I think the custom should be the main focus to get excited about. If the person is more excited about extras than the custom... well that isn't so good for the poor custom lol. As a general rule I set a $5 or less price limit for my extras. Food can be difficult to ship but I like hershey kisses/bars with almonds. But my teeth aren't great so I try to minimize my sweets. I dislike toosey rolls and gummi candy. I love it when I get art in the box or stickers or little things.

As for extras, I like sweets but even more than them I like to get art like scetches or even detailed pictures. Sweets are nice for a while but art lasts longer ^^ I also love MLP stickers.

Art is always cool to get, I've gotta agree with that! I also always love to get a note with the custom, and always send one (usually long- I talk too much). I have all the notes I've gotten with my customs and keep them with the the ponies, as a nice reminder of both who made them and how much they put into them.
I also have to agree with how amazing tea is, because tea is awesome! I also like most candies, but it's sooo hot out here that half the time things melt.
What I usually send is $5-$10 of things, usually with something edible, a printed note because my handwriting is terrible, any random cheap thing I've found and thought would be cool (A flower growing kit that was $1 once) and a little trinket from Vegas, because I think were I live is cool! It'd be cool to get something touristy and local from others too I think, especially since I'm too broke to really travel myself.

I was wondering that same thing. I don't think most people 'expect' extras, but I can't help sending something. For the vacation swap my partner sent me used copies of The Devil Wears Prada book and DVD and I thought that was a creative take on extras :) (Rarity went to fashion week in Paris.) I may toss in a cheap, spooky old movie. I wonder if they have a DVD player/VHS?
Can't have too many stickers. Art is great! Since we are getting these in October I may try to include some Halloween extras. I don't know what that will be exactly just yet, but I usually just keep my eye out as I'm out-and-about and I'll stumble upon stuff. I usually don't think much about it til my pony is done or almost though. Especially an intense project pony like this one. I like to make accessories to go with my pony, but that won't really work with this one (muah ha ha ha).
Candy, I love rootbeer-flavored hard candies but I don't have any dislikes I can think of.

I usually try to do a drawing that I can send to them after they get their package (I colored it digitally). As for other extras, it is usually stickers, candy, or a random Littlest Pet Shop that would be a good tag along.

I only expect a pony and a note and maybe a candy bar or a trinket.
I've only done 2 other swaps and the first swap I sent around $15 worth of extras and spent around $10 on the pony, plus a TON of time on her. But, I forgot to send a note. *Facepalm* For the ponies on vacation swap, I sent around 5 or 6 bucks worth of extras, and spent $7 or so on the pony cuz I had a lot of the stuff on hand, and I remembered a note, and drew her a picture~! :D
In return on those two swaps, I got no extras in my first swap and was a bit disappointed, but the custom was a beauty, so I didn't really mind in the end; the second swap partner SPOILED me! All things I either LOVED or hadn't tried before, and a couple things to keep that weren't sweets and an extra pony! <3
I love asian candies and foods, and I don't like chocolate to much. Or gummy things. I only like some locally made sour gummy bears that are super soft. :3 I'm getting long winded... >.>

Although the summer heat (End of summer counts too) might be too much for some candy.

If you have trouble with complaints you can also load the image with mature warnings attached, or spoiler folds when you post them places like here. I can't imaging why a hosting site would refuse to support them.
Edit: Also halloween rocks! I just realized that my baby is due sometime oct. 31- nov 2nd. So I may have to ship early or late depending on the deadline and when the little one decides to be born. I will keep you updated when we get close to that time so we can keep an eye on how things are doing. If possible I would really like to ship before the baby is born because I have no idea how long I will be mia after that. (current deadline should give plenty of time... as long as she carries full to term)

Thanks! We are doing okay so far. Almost half way through. But we got rear ended the other day so I have tests and tests and tests because my belly is sore from the seat belt. But so far new baby seems strong and unharmed. We are getting an ultrasound on the 2nd and hopefully we'll know if it's a boy or a girl! I have a son already so I am hoping for a girl kind of. Then again another boy would be nice. She is slowing me down. I sleep a lot more so my customs work is slower. But never fear monstrous pony will be finished in plenty of time. :joy:

I personally think you made one of the best Zombies from last year, and clearly your imaging host is crazy. Another pony of that quality would be amaaazing emuel. Don't curb yourself just because soome people are twitchy. We love your work!
And Sarah, congrats on the baby! If anything does come up towards the end of your pregnancy that interferes, either from needing to ship early or premie baby just say, and I'm happy to work things through. After all, a baby is more important that a pony.

I love those spoiler folds, it is so nice just in case you need a little extra eye protection. I already saw the custom and it was disturbing, but it was awesome too! I couldn't own it because I would be afraid it would eat my heart at night but that only speaks to how skilled the execution was. Ha ha get it execution?
No seriously though, when it comes to zombie customs disturbing = you did a great job.
I carried my son full to term but I got bed rested for a while. I don't anticipate any problems. :) But now I am thinking of Halloween surprises I could send to my partner. He he. I am glad so many like Halloween. But then again... I should have known we would all be drawn to this swap.

I too would be a shut in. I do very well in the cold but I wilt like a flower in the heat. If I have any say I'd be in my ac with it so cold I need a light sweater. :) Chilly and fantastic. My husband is the opposite. He freezes no matter what and does excellently well in the heat. Needless to say we compromise. He dresses warmly and I try not to over do it. Ohio weather is just a mess. I can't even describe it. If you don't like the weather in Ohio wait a minute, cause sure as shootin' it will change in a blink of an eye.

Just kidding. When I moved here I expected it to rain all day, every day. But it's actually really pleasant most of the year. July and August tend to not have any rain at all, and it's just stunning.

I moved from washington to florida about 7 years ago. Went from a nice, drizzly state, to a hot all the time or extreme storm state. There's rarely compromise with the weather here.

Last year I was a princess and my William was a dragon. But this year I probably won't dress up. It will be so close to time to have the baby that a lot of walking wont be good for me. Maybe I'll get one of those pregnant costume shirts that makes your belly a pumpkin or something. I figure my son can either go with his Daddy or his Grandma.
One is never too old to dress up for Halloween. I always liked the adults who gave out candy that were all dressed up.

Woo! I have always loved the name William. I knew from the instant I decided to be a mom if I ever had a son I woudl name him William. Before I married my husband I told him he would have to be okay with it but in return he would name our 2nd child whatever he wanted. So God help this new baby because whatever he picks he gets. lol.

How's everyone's customs coming? Mine is finally ready to start the sculpting, I actually had quite a bit of prep work to do before this point (it'll all make sense when you see it). I told my friend that it'll either be super awesome or a hot mess. I can't wait to see what everyone else is doing :D

Mine is still in the planning stages. My selective burning on my test bait was an utter failure. The plastic melted easily and it created a nice divet in the skin that would be useful in some texturing. But the problem was that the plastic hardened almost immediately. So you don't get a nice clean burn you get black charred flakes stuck to the pony that are... Let's say impossible to remove.
I will say this though the plastic is adhering really well to my alternative media. My test bait is sort of starting to look like a Frankenstein pony. I can't decide which gen to use for my final.
Edit: btw can we get some refresher concept art? I'd love to see some pics from your fans on da or just some pictures that promote the style you like.

One of the first injuries of the swap. I've lost a large chunk out of the middle finger of my left hand. No pics... too gross. But I am ok. I was working on an armature design and I thought my finger was clear of the wire cutters.

Thanks! It's not on my dominant hand so I don't think it is going to hinder me much. I was using a wire cutter to section and groove small pieces of plastic so that I could use the notches to slide them into place in my armature. I was holding it with my left hand and cutting with my right. Unfortunately, the tip of my finger got in the way.

I am completely done with sculpting, next would be a FBR but I'm not sure how to do it. For now I have done them with a brush or a make up sponge, but I'm itching to try my airbrush.

Hey guys! I just received a custom from another swap (and I LOVE her btw), and the package was wrapped up with packing peanuts to keep her safe (which is fine) but my dogs and son keep trying to get into them and eat them. So if possible from now on I'd like to avoid packing peanuts where I can. I was hoping my partner could use something else to cushion. If not that's fine! I'll just pitch the packing peanuts quickly before they are seen by my critters, but it's something I never though of until this moment.

My hubby has been helping me a little bit too! He is so much better at the how part of things. I tell him what I want and he tells me what I will need or suggestions especially on armature. I am pleased to say that my second round of sculpting is finished. As long as my plan holds I should be able to complete the 3rd and 4th session after the hair I ordered comes in the mail. Finally making progress.

It totally depends on the monster. For instance a vampire might not have nasty hair, but a swamp thing would. Mine's not a gorey pony, but it will kind of be aged and windswept. I am actually having to sculpt the hair- don't freak out everyone! :bolt: lol, trust me. It will work with this pony and this pony would be IMPOSSIBLE to rehair normally.
Just trust me, partner. I know you will love this :D
As for my preference, do whatever your vision requires. For instance, I don't normally like yarn hair, but if you were making a creepy doll pony it would totally work. I think this swap is one of those that you can bend the norm on. These aren't normal ponies. They are more like sculptures.

Edit: As for me... I think most of my picks would do with crazy hair or alternative hair or maybe even just sculpting. So don't be afraid to make mine a little out there if you want to.
This may be the hardest part for me because I am so torn. I think crazy hair would be better in a monster custom even if it doesn't look nice. Because the point isn't to look nice. It's the effect. I need concept art on this. *search*

Bumping us up. I have a question for my partner. I'll send it out. My design will need to change a little bit depending on the prefs. But it's a small change so I'm really not too worried about it. I have one more set of sculpting to finish. Then finish the detail paint and seal it and I should be all set to go.
Did we list sealant prefs here? Does anyone have a specific preference? I prefer matte or dullcoat I do not really like glossy (except to highlight parts that should be shimmery like blood/eyes/symbols). Does that make sense?

Hmm. I'm pretty neutral on what sealant I get, but I know I prefer to use Liquitex gloss sealant- it just seems to go on the ponies better, and smooths out the paint.

Aww, much love for both of you! The shrinkage is part of why I switched to apoxy sculpt.

I know right! Well this was a clay I've never used before. It's a special kind of eraser clay that when it hardens it turns into an eraser instead of into something that is actually cured rock hard. So it's kind of rubbery. Sculpey brand but I didn't even think about shrinkage. If anyone ever uses it, there is a little shrinkage. And prone to crumble a bit if you erase really really hard. I have a test sheet to test the erasing capabilities. If anyone is interested I can post a picture of my results for future use.

I am scared of Apoxie Sculpt XD I will have to use it soon for a project that can't be baked though. My wing problems aren't about shrinkage, they just don't want to work for me, fortunately, my monster pony doesn't have wings :D

Food extras: I said on my form foodish extras that melt are no good because Vegas is aaalways hot, but I adore tea, and gummy treats are usually okay.
Nailpolish: I like cool colors, or those awesome color changing ones, but tend to when I do wear nail polish use lots of colors at once, and like most everything.
Colors: I like teals, greens, and purples; despite my persona I do tend towards cooler colors on my own.
Hobbies: I do bake, a lot. More now that my work hours've been cut, to make snacks for DnD, which I also do. Monster High is kind of a hobby right? And I draw some, though not as much as I used to.
Animals: Tigers and turtles are my two loves, though I only really keep dogs and cats and fish for pets.

I have to agree about the melting thing. If you put mealty things in please wrap them in a little ziplock just in case. I recently got a fabulous custom that had melty chocolate in it, but since the pony was well protected it wasn't a problem.

Ok feeling much better today. I was a :slug: yesterday, but today I feel much more :newpony: ! So Just wanted to come back in and say WOO my pony arrived! If you haven't checker her out yet go sneak a peek. She is gorgeous, the color scheme is perfect for my sona and the were/flame creature combo really works for her personality. I've worked with Tinker before, sorry you are having so much trouble I would die if I went through all that and it got dropped!! Keep at it, you are gonna love the finished piece.

I started on a replacement just in case. Makes me a lil sad though, I worked hard on teh pony and she looks so awesome. (to me at least) I just hope it get to you before Christmas.

Aw Tinker that stinks! I know how you feel though. I was sending a custom to Spain once. It was so expensive and it got lost so I made a replacement and that got lost so I made another and that got lost. I held on to all my shipping stubs so I could prove that I sent them but in the end we had to give up. It was awful. The worst part is the post office doesn't care, like at all.

I will probably get it a month to the day after we completely give up. Isn't that usually how these go? Also, do you visit the NW ever? We're having a meet in Seattle next summer :D

Alright, got Jwalraven's replacement shipped out, and she should arrive sometime next week!

Aaand talked with Tinker. She has recovered Salli's zombie, and just waits to get shipping money, since UPS costs a bit more than USPS. More news when I get it!
