Title: Baby Night Song or Baby Stella?
Post by: Ponyfan on July 26, 2018, 06:59:26 AM
Hi,

There was some talk about the Starlight Babies in the POTD thread and I thought it be fun to discuss which one is Baby Night Song and which one is Stella.

To me the white baby is Baby Nightsong. :)

Hmm.. I think it'd probably make more sense if the pink one was Stella, since her symbol is more focused on stars than the white one. Then again, pony names don't necessarily make sense (looking at you, Glittery Sweetheart Sisters).. blah, I don't know XD If only the backcards were more specific (i.e. had specifically labelled the ponies/mentioned some identifying details in the backcard story).

I've seen MOC examples both ways, but I consider the white one to be Night Song for two (very silly) reasons:

1) Night Song is a prettier name than Stella, and the white baby is prettier than the coral baby.

2) The white baby's pose looks like she's singing to the night sky like in Night Song's backcard story, and the coral baby's symbol has a shining star at "center stage" like in Stella's backcard story.

QED :P

I am responsible for the current naming arrangement (lol) because I gave the names to DV from the comic...so I have to stick with my childhood belief on the subject.

Night Song is the white one for me and Stella is the coral one.

That said, I have not seen a MOC pony that way around for a very long time. Most MOC ponies name them the other way around and I know at least one person here had at least one of them new as a kid and it was the other way around. So...

I personally am at the point whereby probably the correct naming is white/Stella and coral/Night Song but there does seem to have been some official confusion way back when, leading to the comic mix up. Most comic mix ups got corrected shortly after but this one never did...so....

And I honestly can't see the white one as Stella. I was brainwashed from childhood to think that way :)

I've seen an equal number on card with each name... so I have to go with what I bought White - Stella, Orange - Night Song. I always took the names on the card as Fact but I could just have easily got them the other way around.

I've not seen many European cards but the one I have are these:
In Dutch the Orange Baby "Nachtliedje * Chansonnette" - Night Song! / Little Song
In German Orange Baby "Baby Glitzer" - um... Glittery?    White Baby "Baby Sternschnuppe" - Shooting Star

Which very much clears it all up :P

Baby Night Song is prettyyy. I just gave it a quick lookup.
Unfortunately the symbols and backcards don't give us many hints. The orange backstory does say:
Quote
I expect Baby Stella's dreams will come true! After all, her name means 'Star' doesn't it?"
The orange pony's cutie mark is a star surrounded by rings, while the white has two planets surrounded by stars.
The fact that the star is only the centerpiece of the orange pony leads me to believe that she is Stella, while Nightsong is white.

They're still pretty new to me so I just want people to only have one name for them so I can spend less time looking up the white one on ebay and tempting my empty paypal. XD

Though I do believe that the name on the toys should apply to the toys, even though the names are swapped in the comics. Names of toys takes precedent in G1 in my opinion.

I tend to agree. The problem is what Chrissytree said - Hasbro put some of each on each card. I think personally that more appear with Stella/white and Night Song/orange these days. But Hasbro UK isn't always correct with the ponies it puts on cards. I mean, I have seen lots of Twinkle Eyes with issues cardwise. Sweetie hardly ever seems to come up on her card (I am talking UK cards of course) but I have seen her on Gingerbread's card and often on Masquerade's. I have a Honeycomb on Snowflake's card as well. So it's really difficult to know what the heck Hasbro wanted for this set.

Of course, it gets more muddled with these guys as there are versions made in HK, China and NC versions as well. It is possible that could have a bearing on this though it just seems like a packaging vs promotional issue.

Baby Mischief has a lot of variations (I have 6 so far) but I haven't seen the same with the other three, just the different manufacture places, so I'm not sure how much we can blame factory production shifts for this.

I feel like I need to sneak in with a picture. I see names, but need an image to match them up. I rely heavily on wiki to identify those ponies sold outside of the US so I  do think of Nightsong as the white baby and Stella as the orange baby.

In Spain, baby nightsong is the hot pink one with yellow hair. Her name in spanish is "Bebé Nanas". A "nana" is the song mothers sing to the babies so they sleep. So, it's a "night song" and also it could be translated as baby lullaby.

The white one with pink hair in spanish is "Bebé Estela", so it would be the same that in english. ^^

ETA: The other ponies are called:

Baby Mischief is "Bebé Travieso" and Baby Explorer is "Bebé Trotamundos"

Nightsong is the white one and Stella is the orange. It doesn't really matter what the front of the card says, ponies can be miscarded, but is there a different version of the backings where there is a picture of the white pony with Stella's story or vice versa?

All ponies in that set have the orange pony illustrated. All sets that year just picked one from the set to illustrate.

Oh come on, Hasbro, were you trying to make things difficult?!

We all know that the answer to that is yes.
