My Detolf cabinet from Ikea shattered

I got a Detolf cabinet from Ikea years ago.  Today while I was at work, the glass door shattered.   No one was close to it at the time.  My elderly dog's bed is close to the cabinet and she got covered in glass.  My parents took my dolls out and removed the shelves while I was at work.  The price for the cabinet has doubled from what it was when it was originally bought. I also don't live close to an Ikea store. I had to go 6 hours one way for that one.  I know the most important thing is that no one was hurt and my dolls are okay, but this wasn't what I was expecting at all when I got off work.

Wow, that's terrible! I'm glad your dog is okay. I would try contacting them online, maybe they can replace it.

That's so scary! I've heard about this happening with Detolfs a good handful of times (they're very popular among anime figure collectors, I collect anime figures, too) and that's put me off from ever wanting one.

that's really scary. i've heard of this happening with glass food containers.  i hope your dog is ok!  i'm glad your parents weren't close to it.

I've heard about the glass shattering before too, but I thought that wouldn't happen to mine, because I've tried to be gentle with it and don't open it very often.  I got it 9 years ago, so I doubt Ikea would do anything about replacing it after all of this time.  Ironically, it was my manga shelf that I was worried about collapsing, because I have a lot of books stacked on top of each other right now in a sort of holding area until I feel up to getting the manga boxes out and rearranging the shelves again.

My dog is okay.  I think it scared her pretty bad though.  She was acting strange for the rest of the day yesterday.

Some of my dolls had glass inside the boxes, but as far as I can tell, nothing in the cabinet was damaged.  Right now all of the dolls in the cabinet/things that were on top are just sitting on tables or around waiting for a new place to go.  My dad thinks he might be able to get a new door since the rest of the Detolf is intact.

My dad's first idea about getting a new door didn't work.  He took the Detolf apart and put it in the garage for now, while he works on trying to get something to use as a door.

My mom has a Detolf too and I'm wondering if the same thing could happen to hers.

Thank you everyone.  My dad took the Detolf completely apart and put it back together.  It's still missing a door.  My dad's first idea was to have plexiglass custom cut to make a new door.  He did that, but after he brought it home, it didn't fit.  His next idea was to use the back of the cabinet for a door, but that didn't work either. So for now, my cabinet is back where it was originally, but there's no door. I still need to put the my dolls back inside.  I have a mind to just drape a sheet or something over it to protect until we can get something for a door.
