Title: What are you planting?
Post by: invaderhorizongreen on May 14, 2017, 12:05:34 PM
Anyone starting plants from seed, or just general planting this year? I am planting, beans, tomatoes, and peppers. As well as transplanting some wild strawberries to my garden.

only have a small garden nowadays so I am limited to what I can grow I do have several herbs, strawberry plants and an apple tree. but I think the apple tree may not be doing so well as it has not produced any leaves yet but I will give it the rest of the year and if not it will have to go which is a shame but it has being dry here and working stupid hours I have not being able to water everything as much as I should do  -_-

We dug out most of the garden (weeds) in the fall because I wanted the new special Canada 150th tulips (white with red). So we planted those in the fall. The first one has finally bloomed (and the others have buds). Although it came up orange instead of white and red, but apparently that has been common with these special ones. Hoping at least some of the others come up correctly.

I finally got to start my own little collection of potted plants this year now that I've moved somewhere where plants can actually grow and I'm super excited. I have basil, sage, thyme, rosemary, oregano, scallions, lemon balm, peppermint, cilantro, a bunch of tomatoes, a test run of garlic, and bergamot!! Also some poppies and sweet alyssum.

I even have a houseplant now. I found a mini banana tree (grow bananas in Canada??? sure I'll try it  )

Well, I have really lousy luck with gardens, but currently I am keeping alive some herbs....  I tried cucumbers, but they've been up for 3-5 weeks and haven't grown at all.  >_<

My apricot tree is finally producing after 4 years in the ground! There are a dozen little apricots that are just turning peach-colored.

I'm doing my second year of veggie growing :) I've still got some purple sprouting broccoli and perpetual spinach that I bought as small plants and I'm still harvesting now :) I've got some tomatoes, giant peppers, pumpkin and more sprouting broccoli I've grown from seed this year and I'm hoping to plant some carrots and sugar snap peas when it's a bit dryer :)

I just transplanted four wild strawberry plants, they are super happy. I know these are wood strawberries, first cultured in ancient Persia.

Hmmm so far... the trees and bushes in blossom are the: crabapples, pear, plums, cherry, currants, raspberries and blueberries.  I repotted all the ghost peppers, the carolina reaper and the pineapples.  Have been too busy to really deal with seeds...

A bunch of annual hanging baskets and planters, and some sedge and ferns.

Keeping an eye out on the garden and will make adjustments as time goes on.  Will probably get another astrolabe plant when it goes on sale.

I have the Canada 150 tulips as well (though mine were from the nursery because the official ones were sold out) and they are the correct colour--just a bit smaller then the official ones.

Strange how the official ones turned orange o.o  It still makes for a pretty tulip id think.

A friend is going to help us get our garden under control, so we're going to start prepping some succulent cuttings in a little mini-green house. We have several varieties that have spread throughout the bed rather unevenly, so we're going to try and smooth that out and get better coverage.

I've been working on a lot of potted plants this summer! It's grown into a bit of an obsession. :P Right now I have three succulents, a pink star, a purple passion, some kind of palm, and a plant whose name I unfortunately forget right now- as well as five succulent cuttings I'm waiting on to grow roots so I can plant them. Growing succulents from cuttings is so fun.

Bumping this from a little while ago, finally getting around to posting some tulip pics.
My first "special red & white Canada 150th" tulip came up totally orange, which gave me a scare. But the rest came up nicely, although they did start more yellowish, but eventually did whiten with a bunch of red.

Panoramic - still young (you can see the yellow on them):

Spotlight - 2 of my best flowers, but they all came up nicely:

Beautiful tulips you got there Kiwi. I planted some snapdragons and foxgloves last year and they are coming up now. : )

This year I planted potatoes, tomatoes, salad, zucchini, beans, radishes, strawberrys, raspberrys, red and black currants, peppers. The only thing that won´t grow this year is the cucumber, maybe the Cold spring season.

It is winter over here right now, so planting is not high on my agenda. I did a whole hoard of cutting back yesterday which will help when spring comes. However our garden is still full of flowers: aloes flower in winter and we have a lot of them. So we also have a lot of sunbirds in the garden right now - they love aloe nectar  :P

Our irises seem to be budding anyway, even though they are supposed to be flowering only in spring.

Love your tulips, Kiwi, they are stunning! I wish we could grown them but it is a bit too warm for them here and they don't flower.

I did have some lettuce seeds popping out of the soil the other day... but they seem to have gone! Must have been eaten. I have some others so I guess I'll try again and protect them better this time :)
I've also planted some sweetcorn and carrots. I think I've overdone the tomatoes though - there were 30 seeds and I planted the lot! I've got 24 and a half plants growing in the conservatory! A few have started to flower too :)

In my little section of the garden back home, it is usually a battle between what nature plants and what I do. This year nature has gone to town on foxgloves of the white and purple variety. Also, a very huge hollyhock which must have been planted by birds. Both the foxgloves and the hollyhock are taller than I am now.

One foxglove that nature planted ;)

I have a little group of heuchera and I have recently added two new ones. I also have some baby lupins to plant out when I go home next (yay). I also planted some begonias for this season which are stunning now they're flowering, and also one of my pet favourite annuals, diascia. It literally will grow wherever you put it and it flowers amazingly.

I also have a habit of rescuing plants that look a bit sad. This year, unfortunately, most of my rescue cases didn't make it, but a couple that did found places in the hanging baskets out front. I also got some leftover begonia, lobelia and pansy plants which would probably have been composted otherwise, and I hope they too will join the garden soon.

Rescued baby plants waiting for their big adventure. Some of the above my father has adopted for his strawberry planter now. We share plants a lot in my family. :)

In my garden, every plant gets a chance to shine :D

I miss the garden when in London :( No plants here :(
