Customs / Re: Any old school customizers still around? :)

Sorry to bump an old thread but I just looked in on this again and wow! So nice to see all the folks I remember from years ago! And glad to hear you are still doing your NYC ponycon, Kar!

Oddly enough the thing that led me back here is how bronies have really taken off in mainstream culture... I remember when I was first into ponies as an adult there were only a couple of guys on the boards. I wanted to come back here and see if the arena was all bronies now I guess :)

Oh, and btw, even though I don't make pony customs much anymore, I do have a new venture making upcycled fused glass jewelry. Check out the link in my sig of you're interested :)

One thing you can try (which I do when I make corsets, etc) is to use vinyl or vinyl-coated fabrics that don't need to have the edges hemmed. In other words, you can just leave the cut edges raw if you cut very neatly because they will be clean and straight and won't fray. If it suits your design, you can then use eyelets and grommets to finish the piece and attach it to itself (this works well with corsets and other "lace up" type things).

If you have to sew 2 different parts of a costume/outfit together, I would suggest doing a small overcast stitch very very close to the edge of the fabric. The biggest problem I run into is not being able to get close enough to the edge due to fabric fraying. So, before I start sewing, I will often apply something to stiffen the fabric's edges, like a tiny bit of thin glue or glue mixed with water. Let that mixture go all the way through the fabric, and THEN cut your pattern out, or trim it down, so that you can carefully control how far the "stiff" part goes--if you leave too much you will just make more unwieldy and noticeable seams. It's harder to get the glue to stay in the right place I find if you cut the pattern out first.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jupi and Talismarr! Great to see you 2 still around :)

and thanks so much for the compliment on my medusa pony, Princess of Darkness :)

Someday soon I hope to get nickelinescustoms.com up and running again--just to have the pics there for posterity. I still have the domain, but some years back the database that runs the photo layout ran into problems and I never had the chance to fix it so I just took it offline.

Oh wow! I just came back to this thread and was so pleasantly surprised to see so many responses and familiar names. <waves> So nice to see some of you are still around and also cool to know that some folks on here remember me from way back.

So, since I've been out of the customizing scene since about 2010, can anyone catch me up on how things have changed? Do people still do lots of g3 customs or is the emphasis on the FiM style nowadays? Anyone found any new great materials or techniques to use for customs?

Oh, and here's a few of my old customs, for folks who don't know me:

hi all--long time no see. I used to be pretty active on the customs boards in the early to mid 2000s, but wandered away around 2009 or so. I was wondering if any of the other customizers from that era are still around? Does PoniesYeah still post? Or Woosie? Or Kar_RedRoses? I see Roogna posted a custom recently--<waves> I remember ya from way back!

Say hi if you remember those days--hoping to find a few familiar faces still around :)
