It's a WHAT?
« on: October 13, 2012, 11:19:35 PM »
So today my friend and I were hanging out, and I noticed a very large mosquito hawk on his wall, and pointed it out to him because I thought it was a large mosquito. He shook his head and told me in all seriousness that it "Isn't a mosquito. It's a Snolly Gosster"
WHAT? XD
I'd never heard the word before so i thought he was kidding, but I guess it's what people out here call them.
The same friend also commented on one of our classmates bringing a "bumbershoot" in to school when it didn't even rain. He had to explain to me that it meant umbrella.

Have you ever learned any silly or quirky words for every-day objects?

The half hour between dusk and full dark=dark thirty
Something that's a good distance away=back forty
Downpour rain=frog strangler
Twitchy person or animal=more nervous than a long tail cat, in a room full of rockin chairs.
Very mad or upset=mad as a wet hen
Stream=crick

I've heard them, but I guess I don't really commit them to memory as odd because I can't pull any up.

I think mostly everyone's familiar with Southern terminology, but I still get awkward looks from non-southerners when I use the term "cattywampus."  it's just an adjective meaning off-center or generally not right.

Your mosquito hawk is likely what we call a mosquito eater, aka a Crane Fly.
I grew up calling grilled cheese sandwiches "gritches". This really threw my husband (and ... everyone else >.<)

The only one I got confused with when I moved from Southern California to Indiana for college was "pop." I was going to the grocery store and my roommate asked me to pick up some pop. I was like "Pick up what?"

Pop is apparently Midwestern for soda. I'm used to brand names for soda like "hey can you pick up some Coke on the way home?"

Walking into a store just after moving to Tennessee from Chicago, we were asked by a lady in the parking lot if we needed a buggy.  Horse and buggy?  Baby buggy?  Huh?  Finally figured out she meant a shopping cart.  :P  It's apparently a common term for it here, but I still have to stop and think a moment any time I hear one referred to as such.

I'm sure there are terms I use for things that are out of the ordinary, but I can't really think of any at the moment.

yep, Buggies!! lol!

So, my odd one was a hose-pipe. I am Southern, born in Atlanta, bred in East Tennessee, so I am not a stranger to Southern Terms. I have a deep Georgia drawl! When I moved to Middle Tennessee, ( just south of Nashville), someone asked me at Lowe's where the "Hose-pipes" were. All sorts of confused, I pointed him to plumbing, where he could buy cut-to-length pipe, piping of all shapes and sizes!!

He came back "maddern a old wet hen" and berated me for my lack of knowledge. Didn't I know where the "hose pipes" where?? I asked him to describe what you used it for, and quick realized he was looking for a garden hose, sheesh!!!

My husband swears up and down to this day, that is a SOUTHERN term! hah, never heard it in all my 21 years before that point!   :yikes:

YES.
When we first moved here to Iowa about 15 years ago, my family was surprised to learn that people here call chipmunks "squinnies."  I still think it is the dumbest word.

Alicat, I've lived in TN for most of my life and I have never heard someone call a garden hose a hose pipe.  I call shenanigans on your husband.  XD

But woo, more Tennesseans coming out of the woodwork!

Ps, I called shenanigans on him too!! It seems to be in just this area!
