Hey folks,

I once again want to share the MLP-related side of Taobao!  Sadly I am seeing less pony bootlegs on there these days; that is the thing I miss most about G4's heyday, the weird fakies.  But! all is not lost.  Because Hasbro China has been making all kinds of licensing deals in the past few years, collaborating with various Chinese fashion brands.

One of the most prolific brands was TSMLXLT (although they seem to be winding down now).  And what does TSMLXLT stand for?  Well OBVIOUSLY it stands for "Art Small Medium Large Xtra Large Translate".

. . . yeah, I don't get it either.  But they have a lot of cool shirts.  That are now mostly out of stock and that I regret not buying.

They also made their own OC pony who is on a lot of merch!

Here we have a velour tracksuit featuring Talk-A-Lot.  Such a random pony for merch.

One thing I did get from TSMLXLT?  Socks!  They were about $10 a pair.

They're really fond of this Starshine x Firefly mashup pony.  (Perhaps their daughter?)

Pony Corral / Etymology: When Ponies Became G[X]
« on: July 30, 2023, 08:34:33 AM »
I dug up my old Tumblr post on this subject . . . here we go!

Do you know why we call pony generations G1, G2, etc?  The term didn’t originate from Hasbro--except it also sort of did.

We must first look not at ponies, but at robots.

The first Transformers line ran from 1984 to 1991.

Then in 1993 Hasbro released Transformers Generation 2, a toyline so advanced that the logo was being sucked sideways by some preternatural force.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

The truth was most of the G2 Transformers were previous Transformers in new color schemes . . .

But the point is that if THIS toyline was Generation 2, aka G2, it implied that the 1984 - 1991 Transformers were Generation 1, or G1.  Thus the terms G1 and G2 were born in the Transformers fandom.

Let’s go back to ponies.

The original line of MLPs ran from 1982 to 1992 in the US, and a few years more in select other countries.

MLP then lay dormant until it was rebooted in 1997:

Collectors did not call the new ponies G2s.  They called them “the ’97 ponies” (even the ones made in 1998, 1999, etc) or “the new ponies”.

The original ponies were called “the 80s ponies” (even the ones made from 1990 to 1992) or “the old ponies”.

Then in 2003, My Little Pony was rebooted again:

Suddenly two labels were not enough, because what were THESE ponies supposed to be called?  “The new-new ponies”?  No, the community needed a more clearcut way to describe these three generations iterations of MLP.

And so discussions began on the then-central hub of MLP collecting, the My Little Pony Trading Post. Suggestions included calling the new ponies “the 2003 ponies”, or referring to each generation by their location (Dream Valley, Friendship Garden, and Ponyville).

Then a MLP collector who also collected Transformers remembered the “Generation 2″ robots.  She suggested the ponies be called G1, G2, and G3.  Not only were the terms clear, but they were short--an important consideration when collectors were buying, selling, and trading on forums with limited subject-line space.

There was no “aha” moment or immediate consensus; for a while each collector called the ponies whatever they preferred.  But gradually the G1 / G2 / G3 labels gained favor and became universally accepted.

As for the pony collector who made the suggestion . . .

It was me.  :)

The Gx term is still mostly fanon, you don’t see it used in official merchandise much.  But when Basic Fun released their retro G3 ponies . . .

Well, it made me smile.

Monster High has also started using G1, G2, and G3 . . . I asked a Monster High collector when this started and she said it really kicked off when the third generation was released.  Which I found really interesting.

I know the unnamed purple Valentine pony and white Valentine pony were offered by Current stationery company, but I'm wondering if they were officially referred to as twins or if that's just something collectors called them.  I know you could buy one without the other . . .

How funny of them to label her "First Tooth Pony" like that was her defining trait??  Not the Valentines theme?

Pony Corral / G1 MLP 'n Friends books . . . from 2007!
« on: October 29, 2022, 09:00:33 PM »
Hi guys, I made a little video about the MLP 'n Friends books I found on Taobao (when I was searching for the Chinese translation of "anime colt", ha ha!  I like to put random horse related word combos in the Taobao search because sometimes I find unique fakies or MLP merch from it.)  They were published in 2007 and seem to have been licensed, as they advertise G3 merchandise in the back.

I think maybe MLP 'n Friends was brought over and shown on TV around that time.

Anyway, here's the video!  I love the covers, the art style is so . . . unique.  Watch the video and learn which pony had persimmons on her butt.

Pony Corral / What kind / size curlers do you use for ponies?
« on: September 17, 2022, 11:18:20 PM »
So, I want to recreate curls like Heart Throb or Sparkler would have had (that sort of loose, permed look, not tight straw curls).  Anyone have any curler recommendations?  :)

Pony Corral / Baby Stella and Baby Night Song: mistaken identity
« on: September 17, 2022, 09:26:57 AM »
Guys, get ready to have your minds BLOWN!   :whoa:  I think we've collectively been switching these ponies names for years.

Every time I see these ponies MOC, the orange baby is on a Baby Night Song card and the white baby is on a Baby Stella card.  And for years I just assumed, "Oh, that one is miscarded!"

visitors can't see pics , please register or login
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

But then it slowly dawned on me that every single one I've ever seen has been "miscarded".  So like.  What if they're not miscarded at all?

In addition, these are the non-English names for the babies:

salmon orange baby

Spanish - Baby Nanas.  Meaning: Baby Lullabye
German - Glitzer.  Meaning: glitter
French - Chansonnette. Meaning: little song or ditty
Dutch - Nachtliedje.  Meaning: night song

white baby

Spanish - Estela. Meaning: comet tail
Italian - Stellina. Meaning: little star
French - Stella. Meaning: star
Dutch - Stella. Meaning: star
German - Sternschnuppe. Meaning: shooting star

So the orange baby is usually associated with music.  (Except the "glitter" name, but the German backcard story still describes her singing at night.)

I think the basis for the name confusion is the backcard being unclear and the UK comics, which do call the orange pony Stella and the white one Night Song.

If you only had this backcard to go off of, it would be hard to tell which pony is which. :what:

And I suspect this is exactly what the UK comic people had to work with.  My theory is Hasbro sent them the following:

* the individual stories for the babies
* the very same image as is on the backcard, with all the names written at the bottom, not next to the ponies

The comics people then had to suss out which pony was which.  Well, Baby Mischief's backcard story mentions a kite.  Baby Explorer's backcard story mentions a balloon.  For the other two babies, they guessed that the pony with the HUGE STAR ON HER RUMP was named Stella.

But this is Hasbro, the company that named the Glittery Sweetheart sister covered with stars "Sunblossom" instead of "Starflash", so they guessed wrong.  :drunk:

Also note that it's really hard to see Baby Explorer's horn here unless you already know to look for it;  the comics people always drew Baby Explorer as an Earth pony.  Which further makes me think the backcard image is what they had to go off of.

Finally, here's a gallery of carded Stellas and Night Songs.  Now, some of these COULD be the same pony being resold, but some are clearly different.  Different shelfwear, different price tag placement, a Night Song with white hair being sold and then one with pink hair, etc.

Pony Corral / MLP ' n Friends - two (or three) intro songs?
« on: September 16, 2022, 02:10:11 PM »
Hey guys,

So I know that MLP 'n Friends originally aired with two segments, one being a MLP segment and other being a different Hasbro property (Moondreamers, Potato Head Kids, or Glo Friends.)

I'm trying to figure out how the theme songs fit into this.

Here's the MLP 'n Friends theme song with the usual MLP jingle ("My Little Pony, My Little Pony, what will today's adventure be"):

>>>LINK<<<

And HERE's a song featuring MLP + a "friend" (in this case Moondreamers, but there were also versions with video clips of Potato Head Kids or Glo Friends) that starts "Come to where the magic is...":

>>>LINK<<<

Then on top of that Potato Head Kids, Moondreamers, and Glo Friends had their own theme songs.  Here's the Potato Head Kids one:

>>>LINK<<<

So, did each 30 minute episode have three theme songs?  Like, the "Come to where the magic is" one to start with, the "My Little Pony, My Little Pony" one before the MLP segment, and the Potato/Moondreamer/Glo specific one in front of the "Friend" segment?  Does anyone know?

Pony Corral / Prototype Celestial pony at Pony Fair West
« on: September 04, 2022, 09:11:48 PM »
I see there was a prototype of a Fancy Swirl pony (aka Celestial) at MLP Fair West!  And also a prototype of a unicorn with a pony skateboarding symbol!

The the prototype has the symbol of the lower righthand pony, but her body colors are different  She is a pegasus.

"The purple splotchy one was supposed to be a celestial prototype, according to Summer Hayes, and it's made of resin, making it extra heavy. "

Pony Corral / G5 Mini World Magic ponies
« on: August 05, 2022, 10:05:16 PM »
I just got Izzy's mini set ($5 on Target.com)!  So, the pieces are held down by pegs so you can move them about and there's a sort of horseshoe-shaped clip that holds the pony in place.  I thought she came with a pink plushie pony but it's actually an armadillo friend, like the ones who helped Alphabittle in the movie.

I got Izzy first because I love her sitting pose.  Her horn is painted over, but I'm going to try to carefully "unpaint it" with acetone.

Pony Corral / How to order MLPs, fakies, or whatever off Taobao
« on: June 11, 2022, 07:55:43 AM »
I post a lot of pics from Taobao here and on my blog, so I thought it would be helpful to make a guide on how I order from them.

How to Order off Taobao by Using BaseTao

I use BaseTao as my proxy buyer.  I request items, they buy them and store them in their Chinese warehouse, then they send multiple purchases to me at once.  Most Taobao sellers don't ship outside of China, which is why a proxy is necessary.

There are other proxies besides BaseTao . . . I just came across BaseTao first and liked them well enough to keep using them. Their fee is 5% on purchases and 5% on shipping. (But if you spend enough money, they start to lower the percentage. At this point they charge me 3%, which might be an indictment on my spending habits, ha ha.)  The way you "load money" onto BaseTao is through Paypal.

If anyone has questions let me know.

BTW the Chinese phrase for My Little Pony is 小马宝莉 which is good for finding real MLPs or real licensed MLP goods (and some cheeky bootlegs) on Taobao.  You can also sometimes get hits by putting in MLP or My Little Pony in English.  If I'm looking for weird bootlegs, I go to Google Translate and look up the Simplified Chinese for phrases that are like MLP, but not identical.

For example:  fashion horse, baby plastic horse toy, my pretty pony, anime colt

(That last one only gave me one hit, but it was the Chinese comic novelizations of MLP 'n Friends with G3-ish artwork on the front covers, so well worth it!)

Pony Corral / Bronze Lucia retro MLP fashion
« on: June 05, 2022, 07:59:16 PM »
So previously Hasbro China had that deal with Wan Accessory for purses, well now they've got licensed shirts from a fashion brand called Bronze Lucia.  (Hasbro China actually announced the deal on their social media so I know they aren't bootlegs.)

I've seen one G4 shirt, one G5 shirt, and the rest are retro G1.

Pony Corral / G1 Italian comic: A Happy Birthday
« on: April 09, 2022, 08:50:25 AM »
So a while ago I translated one of the Italian comic books, let's take a look and see what's up in this version of Ponyland!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I'm splitting this into multiple parts for the dRaMa and because this is the only Italian comic I've translated, gotta make it last.  :devious:

I don't know why Sunlight is a baby in this, I don't think there was ever a Baby Sunlight toy released in Italy?  Adult Sunlight never shows up in the story, so maybe this is just how they chose to interpret her.

Also I know some Italian ponies had genderswaps in Italy (like "Timmy") but later in this story I believe they use a female possessive for Blue Belle, aka Blu, so I think she's female . . . On some of the other ponies I just had to guess.

Pony Corral / Did anyone find the 3" Hitch poseable in 2021?
« on: March 11, 2022, 07:02:07 AM »
I'm updating the MLP wiki and I'm not sure whether to put him in 2021 or 2022.  This would be the Crystal Adventures one that came with the tiny seagull and crab.

Thanks guys!
