My own headcanon is thus:

Unicorns can perform a spell for maybe  a mother who wants a child and has no husband or a pair of ady ponies as in the case of Glory and Moon Dancer-they performed the spell on each other.

Also for some reason, it's inherent in the magic of Dream Valley that baby ponies will be cloes of one of their parents for a short while-Big Macintosh (who is the son of G1 AJ and Tex in my headcanon and was born in the Valley) looked like the doule of his daddy when he was born. When the family moved back to Equestria, Mac's colour changed, his original cutie mark faded and he lived as any other Equestrian pony, gaining his cutie mark in the normal way. Other Dream Valley babies do the same except the cuties simply change as their coat/mane colours do. Baby Glory and Baby Moondancer for example, grew up to be Sky Flier and Powder respectively. And a certain Baby Rainbow Dash who looked like a wee pegasus clone of her mother and then moved to Equestria when she was only 2-3 years old to study under Firefly as both her parents were earth ponies became a slightly brighter blue, more traditonal rainbow maned pegasus....

Maybe ponies have a strange birth rate where females are more common. Kind of like Pokemon, where female starters are rare.
