Title: Wooden Horse (carved) on carousel pole
Post by: Gypsy_Nights on January 25, 2012, 07:20:42 PM
Wanted to show everypony my horse I did in one of my college art classes about 5 years ago.  We had to make something out of dowel rods (hope I'm spelling that right).  The long wooden poles that you can buy in the crafts section or a hardware store.  Anyway they are long skinny pieces of wood.  We were assigned to use just dowl rods to make anything we wanted and some reason I got the crazy idea that I wanted to make a MLP with them. :lookround:   Bad idea!  It was way more challenging than I thought it would be!  >_<  But I figured out how to shave some wood off here and some off there and ta-da!  the front leg joints were Really Hard!  There were multiple pieces that I had to glue together for the finished product.  So with out the paint it looked wierd because the wood lines were all crazy and I had to use wood putty to fill in a few spots.  So I spray painted it with a texture paint but didn't like it much so I sprayed red glitter spray over that. And then I drilled a bunch of holes for where I would put the pipe cleaners for the hair.  And added the carrousel pole and base.  My MLP had turned into a horse.  I couldn't find dowl rods fat enough to make the pony look more plump like a MLP.  I still like how it turned out though!

Yes all dowels. LOL!  I had to use alot of wood puddy on the hips and front knee joints.  Thanks for the compliments!  :)

Thanks you guys!    And yes I got an A.  My art teacher loved it.  He thought I should have just sealed it with a wood finisher so that you could tell it was made with wood.  I didn't think it looked good that way though.  Too much wood puddy and the wood lines or wood grain didn't match up since there were so many pieces.
