Bow Tie's eyes!

Hello lovely pony friends! 

Just a quick question after spending a bunch of time trying to find my answers on the webz: Bow Tie in shy pose with darker blue body and HK mark and Dark Blue eyes: is this a Euro thing? My Little Wiki has Euro Bow Tie down as having purple eyes but mine is deffo' a lovely Royal Blue. I just want to know where she's from and such. Her symbols have faded to basically white, if that's any help too? I did a little custom/painiting experiment recently and made my custom G3 Bow Tie with the same colour eyes, but now I'm thinking I picked the wrong colour! (not that it matters, I totally made her eye liner dramatic and used the wrong pink in her hair and her body colour is closer to US BT but it *was* only a quick custom... lol)

My Bowtie has purple eyes, and is marked Hong Kong so I'm sure she's the American one.

Hiya, I'm in the U.K. too but my Bow Tie is the paler blue with purple eyes and Hong Kong on the feet.  I got her in May 1984 if that helps any?

She looks a lot like the one at Ponyland Press.

My guess would be that the dyes/paints used in different production runs (possibly in different factories) had different tones or were used in different saturation levels causing the deeper colors in some of the batches.

I remember from working in a print shop that the same exact color could vary in different press runs.  The burnt orange in the letterhead was sometimes darker, sometimes lighter depending which press person printed it and the settings they used.  Changing suppliers also makes a difference.

Something like this manufactured in Hong Kong, they may not have been so concerned with adjusting for proper color matching.

I have a Moondancer with Dark Blue eyes, and when I asked about it here, the consensus seemed to be just paint variation, since fading typically leads to lighter-blue eyes. However, I was looking at some of my Moondancer duplicates and was surprised (and disappointed) to see that one has dark purple eyes that were very close to the dark blue of this one and could have easily faded to that same dark blue instead of the usual light blue since pink pigments tend to fade first.

Since the bows on your pony have faded to white, I'd suspect normal purple variation that faded.

I have to agree, colors where not as color fast in the old days, so it is totally possible especially with the white ribbons that the eyes have just "faded" from the purple.

Interesting! Mine is Italian and has brighter blue eyes...

I had two majesties for a while and one had purple eyes and one had blue also.

Ooh yeah, her eyes look similar to the Blue there. That's really odd, I had never considered the purple could fade to dark blue, I only envisioned more washed-out versions of purple like in the pics of the paler Bow Ties.

It's most likely color fading, especially with white bow symbols, that indicate the pony's been exposed to a lot of sun.  Red is the least color fast of the dye spectrum for a variety of reasons - you may well have noted that reds are almost always the first color to fade in movie posters or signs in shop windows that have been up a long time.  Sometimes all that's left is the white of the paper and blue, because blue is the most stable. 

Blue has a higher UV energy potential from what I recall, and red absorbs blue, reflects red (which is why we see red, the red light is being bounced off to our eyes.)  Red dyes also tend to be less chemically stable overall, but this varies greatly with formulation.

I love any excuse to look closely at my Bowtie...adore ponies with freckles! She has very dark navy eyes and is made in HK.
