Tail rust?
« on: September 04, 2013, 04:08:43 PM »
So a few weeks ago I found a Spring Fever at the transfer station in my town. And now as I am conditioning her hair (because hers hair so puffy!) I notice that she might have tail rust. What do you guys think?

Looks like it, yeah. Give her a hard shake. Anything rattling? If you can hear something clicking around inside her, it's probably little rusty flakes. I'd see about popping her open.

Does look like tail rust. I guess some G3s have metal hardware then? The... two I've opened had plastic washers and a plastic clip thingy instead of a clamp.

I actually know that she has a metal washer because I put another g3's magnet up near the tail hole and it stuck pretty good.

G3s could come with both... there really wasn't any kind of standard during those years.  Much like now, really.  :)

Oh dear :( Yes looks like tail rust to me as well. You ll need some strength to get her head popped up but thankfully the rust itself is easy enough to clear up. Good luck!

Later G3s tend to have plastic washers, but some of the earlier ones, and Spring Fever is from an early set, have metal washers.

I use washing up detergent to get rid of rust on tails - I just put a bit of the neat liquid in a small container, like an eggcup, and dunk the whole of the rusty part into the liquid. Leave it for a couple of hours, then add a little water to the tail, rub it until it lathers up and then rinse under clean water.
Thank you *wyvernchick* for my lovely avvie!

I just got a Favourite Friends Wysteria (2007) with rust so bad it was coming out of her hairplugs :S  Her washer had completely disintegrated.

I'm afraid you'll have to open your girl up and clean her. Good luck, G3s with glued on head are not easy to open!

I'm probably going to have to get my dad to help me. But I'm bit wary on that because this one time I found gray marks on one of my LPS and he said could help, but what he did NOT help. He acetoned her eye! But this *hopefully* does not involve acetone!

Try first of all with hottest tap water, and if you have no joy, boil a kettle, pour it into a large jug or bowl and place the pony into it, weighting her down to keep the head and neck in the water if necessary.  I have sometimes done this and been able to slice through the neck join with a blunt butter knife. Sometimes that is enough to unstick the glue, especially on the older G3s.

that's a good idea... I've always had drama getting those heads off. I usually pop some toothpaste or a non-bleach-based bathroom cleaner in the tail while I'm trying to stop it from getting worse... because between work and stuff it can take me weeks to get that darned head off, lol!
