Power of the Dog: 3/10. This one was just weird! None of the characters were particularly interesting or likable for me. The story was just meh.
Now that I have seen it (it's on Netflix) I have got to say I would give this movie a 8/10 rating. It was a good, quiet drama and very well shot and acted by everyone involved. Not sure what you found "weird" about it.
so from the above review i'm guessing Power of the Dog is not about how dogs are all wonderful creatures?
Story spoilers: Spoiler
The Cumberbatch character was gay and projecting onto the boy, trying to drive his mother crazy and separate him from her. In the end he dies because the boy catches onto him and gives him a cow hide tainted by a disease that the Cumberbatch character touches with bare hands to make a rope. It's a family drama set in a time when women had barely any rights and homosexuality could get you killed and makes you feel for both the villain (Cumberbatch) and his victim (Dunst).
Nightmare Alley: 7/10. This one was dark, but thrilling! I thought the story was paced nicely and unlike a lot of these movies, the ending tied in nicely with the beginning! The characters were obviously mostly bad people, but they were written in a way where they were still interesting and engaging.
Also seen this one lately (on Disney Plus) and gotta say it disappointed me greatly. I have seen the original movie (a film noir) and prefer it over this remake. It's not a bad film but it had so many Guillermo DelToro clichés in it, I ended up making a bingo card and had one bingo and one almost bingo x__x It was comical and silly. Like putting a three eyed fetus in a jar into this movie or showing faces caving in... it's like DelToro has to cram these things into his movies. I love his work usually, especially Faun's Labyrinth, but this movie was creatively bankrupt. I'd give it a 5/10 for all the shoddy, ill-placed DelToro-isms.
No One Will Save You - 6/10
It was okay. I always watch stuff with subtitles and they got annoying because it was always [gasps] [breathes heavily] and [creature chattering] The aliens were interesting, especially long leggy. I was confused by the ending though. Spoiler, for spoilers.
Spoiler
So was she the only human left? And the rest of the town was aliens in human costumes? And they were all like her? The woman she was dancing with, was that supposed to be Maude? I'm so confused
Us - 7/10
I love Jorden Peele's stuff and this movie has so many good things about it, but the plot holes bother me.
Spoiler
Like where did they get the jumpsuits and scissors? Why was she the only one who took a dance class out of everybody that was in the tunnels? Surely another kid on the surface would have had dance. And I realize they were switched, which is why she didn't talk, but why did the tethered take so long to realize they had free will? And what's up with the rabbits? Is there some story about rabbits in abandoned tunnels I don't know about?
Vivarium 9/10
If you'd like to see a really weird movie, this is the one. I'm not sure what to say about it other than it's good and very different. Slight spoiler
Spoiler
I only wish we got to see what they looked like. Though, I paused when she was going through the book and I think they are human hybrids? So maybe the vocal cord thing was the only physical thing different about them.
Barbie 7/10 it was fun, it had its points.. but one segment really pissed me off!
Spoiler
That scene when she held her creators hands and was gonna get an understanding of being human and every segment was about children. Life is NOT about children for everyone ffs!
Jurassic World 6/10. The velociraptors went from scary monsters to puppies in this one. It's the biggest downer in the movie.. and that the female lead ran around in heels. It was saved by the T-Rex! The Rex on the top of the building shouting to the world saved the movie.
Rebel Moon 6/10. The first half was really good. But then it kind of lost it. It had some really cool scenes and characters, but I don't really get the point. And it was very predictable. Spoiler
I sat there for an hour waiting for the obvious betrayal.
Super Mario Brothers Movie 8/10
Overall it was a fun movie even if it seemed a little bit disjointed to me in spots. For example there'd be a scene with Mario and Princess Peach and then a jump to what's happening to Luigi. Then back to Mario and Peach. I loved seeing the different game environments incorporated in to the movie.
Spoiler
I couldn't stand that blue star though. I think it was supposed to be one of Rosalina's Luma but it talks constantly about dying and death while it's locked in a cage suspended over a lava pit with the other prisoners (penguins, Luigi Cranky Kong etc..) I'm guessing it was supposed to be funny, but it felt really out of place especially in a movie that's marketed to kids.
Also, if felt like the ending of the movie seemed a bit rushed. I expected more from the foreshadowing earlier and Peach's backstory seemed to not go anywhere.
