Title: Kids playing with your ponies
Post by: lemontwist on June 12, 2012, 10:39:31 AM
I know this topic comes up a lot   but it's so cute. My cousin's daughter Emily and her friend Pheobe found my ponies and Monster High dolls in my suitcase and now they're giving them "makeovers" (don't worry, no coloring and scissors involved!!) They're having so much fun washing and styling my G4's hair, it cracks me up! They're even smart enough to hold the "cool air" button on the blowdryer without me telling them... thank goodness. Pheobe told me she melted her barbie hair doing that when she was "a kid".

They're 11 years old and it's so funny, Emily says how she'll never stop collecting toys and she got all excited when I looked up the pony she used to have (by the way, anyone know if the Seaspray G3 is common?). They both collect LPS and I told them to save them forever xD

Does anyone else just love sharing their ponies with kids (who are old enough not to destroy them)? They can't touch my G1s but the G4s are free game for them! They scoffed at my pony love at first but now that I showed them the toys they're allllllll over them.

My cousin's child like to comb and braid my ponies hair sometimes. I can't say I enjoy it though. I'm just worried that she'll damage them somehow.

Awe that is so cute!  My 11 year old and 7 year old girls get all excited over my G1 playsets and once in a while I'll pull them down off their shelves and let them play with them.  My 11 yr. old says that my ponies have better accessories, they like the pony wear and my kitchen the best!  I love watching them play and sometimes I'll even get down on the floor and play with them too. lol

Lavender that's so cute xD

Yeah I didn't let them play with my G1s at all, I let them hold one but that's it. They knew very well though tha they can get moldy if you're not careful with water so they didn't mind. It's surprising how bright they are.

They even managed to save the curls I had on my Pinkie Pie, and Twilight Sparkle's bangs curl, which I was actually shocked about because curls are really hard to save for me, and they'd gotten all messed up in my suitcase.

Thats cute! I admit I am super cautious with my ponies lol - I dont let anyone [no matter their age] play with them - but thats just my G1s and accessories. The few G3s I have and the G4s I would have no problem with them being played with as toys should [so long as all scissors and markers were well hidden]

I'm a Nervous Nellie about my collections, but ultimately there are no children around me (ever) to play with mine. If there were, chances are pretty good I'd not let them play with my collections. If I had some G4 doubles, then maybe. But probably not. LOL. I'm very protective of my things.

G4s are such bad quality kids can't make them much worse, so normal G4s would be fine. Anything else kids are not allowed near.

Kids playing with my ponies would be zapped into a pile of dust and sucked up the vacuum. I'm glad they were taking good care with your ponies. I don't think Sea Spray is super common, but not rare in the least. Probably should stick with letting them get at the core 7 ponies and you'll be safe.

I'd only let kids play with my ponies if I have doubles that I don't even display. As for the ones I only have 1 of, no.

My daughter, who is 3 years old, loves ponies but especially G1s. She's really good with them. Most of the G1s I've gotten were not expensive or rare. Cheaper than new G4s. There are certain one's she cannot touch and I have doubles of others. So we share our ponies as long as she's "gentle."

If I had a kid come over I might get out some of my G3s or fakies out, but I would keep an eye on them.
I think it is cute to share toys like that with others. I am just so paranoid about them getting ruined, though.

I'm friends with 12-14 year olds (I'm 14, don't worry, haha.) and we play with my g1's. We play this (disturbing) game called Pony Valley.. I'd rather not talk about it, might scare someone LOL. But its really fun. I let them play with all of them exept for Chief, Blossom,Gusty, Spunky and Windy. They are my special ponies and camel :)

I love when I drag out my ponies and my son (who's juuuuust about 9) helps me brush & comb that candy coloured hair.  ^.^  He's very responsable and hearts-him his ponies too, so I know he's going to be good with them.  But I've met other kids that I wouldn't let near my herd with a ten foot head start.  I myself was a "chewer" until I was about 6 or so, and I still have the mangle-footed Fisher-Price horses to prove it.   Come to think of it, I guess I wouldnt' have let me near my own ponies when I was little!

The only kid that ever played with my ponies since I established them as collectibles and not toys is my little cousin. She was always very careful and gentle with them but that was some years ago. She is coming to visit this summer though (she's 13) and I´m excited to see if she will still have some interest in them ^^ I do trust her enough to let her touch them and such if she wants to because I know that she is a well behaved and clever girl that knows how to appreciate things :) lol, or at least she was before hitting puberty!

When I was really little, around 4, I got pen on one of my dolls (I was trying to give her "lipstick."). But my mom's always been a toy collector and the toys that I was allowed to play with had special rules, including adult supervision, and I was always very careful with them.  So, I don't know.  There's never any kids here but, if there were, I think they'd be allowed to lay with some of he ponies, including some of the g1s, provided I knew they could be careful and gentle.  :)

Cute stories, guys.  :)

My brother and his wife are going to have a little girl (she's due in July) and I'm going to be babysitting her while they're at work. I've thought about it and I don't think I could handle letting someone else mess with my ponies that I have on my shelves just the way I want them, perfectly styled, etc. so I think I'm going to probably buy a few just for her to play with while she's here. I know it's still awhile off, but I made the mistake of letting my son play with my collection of Barbies when he was a toddler and he ruined several of them. I no longer collect Barbies, but I really don't want anything to happen to my Hello Kitty or MLP collections.

I let my daughters (4 and 3) play with almost all my ponies. They have their own g4 and g3 and g1. I do not let the play with ss, twinkle eyed or glitter symbol ponies. I also have all the big brother accessories and they are not allowed to touch those, but all others I am cool with. They are very good with them because they know mommy will take them all away if they are too rough with them

Kids are amazing if they know you will take something away that they really like!

This reminded me of something else. A little OT. The ponies are good discipline tools too. If my daughter misbehaves, she has to put the pony of choice (:muffin: Pony right now) in the pony closet for some time. She does not like that. Poor pony gets the timeout instead of my daughter! But it doesn't happen too often. She loves her ponies! XD

teresat lol That so would have worked on me as a kid too. I loved my toys.

I would let older, responsible children play with my common ponies, any generation, under my supervision. Never my super minty, htf, expensive, or fragile ponies (summer wings, etc.).

My mom gave me and my sister some of her old toys, but we were too young and didn't treat them right so they got destroyed, lost, or pretty beat up. I think if she had told us they were really special and had to treat them nice, we would have, but she just viewed them as regular toys. Now I wish I still had a few of them, because they were pretty neat.

I'll be honest, I am NOT a fan of kids. I tend to see only the negative aspects of them, I'll admit. But I see so many with sticky fingers and grimy faces that I simply don't want them near my ponies. To me, my ponies are a collectible item, not toys.

My 3yr old loves ponies, she gets all the fakies and maccas ponies from any lots I get, she has 2 G1's of her own, actually she has ponies from every Generation, its cute at the checkout when buying G4s she tells the lady, this ones for mummy, and this ones for me! Gotta buy 2 of everything I want now!

I admit if these girls were any younger I would not have let them play with mine. I won't let anyone irresponsible or too young touch them, I use my judgement wisely ;) But really with G4s I couldn't justify getting too protective about them, and they made them look all nice because they were so frizzed from travel. My G1s though like I said, they are off limits for anything but being held for a few seconds, even with adults >.> I packed them the best so they're not frizzy anyways.

That's so sweet of you! Glad you are educating them about toy collecting! I wish someone would have told me to hold onto all my old toys :(
I let my little girl, who isn't even two yet, play with my collection. Yep, even the G1's! She loves to get a brush and go at it with their hair. It's fun to watch her playing with them. Even my two and half year old son will gallop and make horse noises with them.

I most definitely do not love sharing my ponies with kids 8((((

It's no secret that I'm not a fan of kids :P I have lots of my ponies downstairs in the living room (there's just not enough shelf space in my room!) and I have little mini anxiety attacks whenever someone with kids is over. I feel a little bad, because I remember when I was little my aunt had these really neat dolls, but she'd never let me hold them or play with them...so I know what it's like to be a kid and not be allowed to play with fun toys....but these are PONIES darn it, and ponies are serious business!

Well, my daughter (8 years old) is allowed to borrow a pony here and there to play with. Especially when it comes to G4, because she is still missing Twilight Sparkle and Spike in her herd. But I wont ever again allow other kids to play with my ponies and stuff. My daughter had her friend for a visit once and wanted to show her "ponyland". Well I took both to my pony room and then it got really ... bad. My daughters friend ripped almost every single pony she could reach from its shelf, tossing others over and touching every single piece, messing up the accessories so I had to spend hours to sort it again. She also knocked over my dehumidifiers, spilling the water over the wool-carpet (you can still see the stains -_-). No thanks. Kids can have their own toys.

I didn't think about it until now but one of my relatives brought her six year old granddaughter over today. The first thing she did was go over to my pony shelf and start playing with them. I didn't mind at first but then I realized I had my custom Rarity sculpture and SDCC :muffin: Pony sitting right there in the middle. I sat there nervously, keeping an eye on her to make sure she didn't damage anything or take :muffin: Pony out of her box but I didn't notice when she broke Rarity's glasses.  :( I didn't have them on her because I knew they were fragile but she probably picked them up when I wasn't looking and dropped them. It's no big deal, I just super glued them back together but now I know to move her and any other valuable stuff next time any kids come over.

She also left accessories lying everywhere and messed up Pinkie Pie's hair, but I don't mind. That happens when kids play with stuff and Pinkie needed restyling anyway. I just know to keep anything valuable out of reach now.

I let my friend's 4 year old play with my blind bags (never the brushables), but she doesn't let me play with hers.  If I try, she very firmly takes them away from me and puts them out of my reach.  :(

Luckily, I don't have any kids visiting my house. I do want to be a mother someday, but I worry about my future kids getting at my stuff. My mom always reminds me of how she never let me play with her special Raggedy Ann doll, but that was one doll...and I have a bunch of ponies and dolls. Eep. Thank goodness I'm not having kids for a while.

I have a three year old and a four year old (both girls) and they LOVE "Mommy's ponies" - so I tell them it's OUR collection, and I keep it in their room even! They can play with any of them at anytime - over 200 G1s - my only exception to that rule is, that if they want to play with the more "delicate ones" (expensive int'l and rare ones) on the upper shelves, they have to come and ask Mommy first so I can loosely supervise. Otherwise, they have been free to play with them all since before they can remember. I have only had a couple incidents and that was in the beginning where they tried a haircut or putting makeup on. Luckily, in both cases I got them quickly repaired and put back and my daughters learned very quickly not to do that again - and haven't. They take very good gentle care when playing with them and know a lot about them. They know almost all of their names too, which is funny. After the pony meet in Atwater they've been saying "Mommy I want to go to another Pony Meet, when can we go to a pony meet?" When a package comes in the mail, they assume it's what it usually is and scream "Ponies!!!!!" LOL ...and I'm like "yeah, you took the SQUEE right out of my heart!"

Well, I have two sons, a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old. And they both enjoy playing with my ponies, specially with G1's. And I allow them to! I know for a fact, that they won't do anything harmful to them, 'cause they know, what ponies mean to me. They are mommy's precious. :D

Actually few days back I let my younger son play with my Show Stable. I keep two Lemondrops and my Peachy inside it and he's used to play with them. Except this time he TOTALLY fell in love with blue dropped Lemondrop and he won't give her back. :D He sleeps with her, he takes her shopping with us, to car trips, everywhere! I don't have the heart to take her away, so I've decided that he can keep her. :)

I really don't mind kids playing with my herd. After all, I don't own anything too rare or valuable (I think my rarest is Thistle Whistle), and I don't buy customs, so I'm not scared of them being broken. As long as there's no scissors or pens involved, I'm good!

My boyfriend had his nieces over once when I was at work. He made the mistake of showing them the pony cabinet, and then quickly had to text me saying, 'Can they play with them?' Haha! Afterwards I was sent a pic with them playing on the living room floor, and I was sick because I wanted to come home and play too!

Oh no. No no no. I wouldn't let kids play with my ponies. I would be way too worried that they'd be destroyed.
Fortunatly the only kid I know is my 6 year old boy cousin and he's not interested in girl toys what so ever :P

However, I'm always causious when I let him inside the flat - well anyone actually no matter if it's a child or adult. I have OCD and if anyone were to move or touch anything I collect or have organized neatly I know I'd freak out and have to check it at least 3 times to make sure it's allright >.< This is why I rarely let people in my house and when I do I don't take my eyes of them so I can make sure they don't touch or move anything =/ I do wish it wasn't that way, but it is.

So it's not just my ponies I'm super protective off, it's everything :P

I haven't had the issue with ponies yet, but when I was a teen I had a big Transformers collection.  I remember freaking out when I had younger cousins visiting for a family reunion because I didn't want them to go into my room to play with my robots.  They weren't the most gentle of kids.  Luckily it didn't happen, but knowing me I would have flipped out.

I'd probably let kids play with the Blind Bags and McD's ponies, only becuase I have OCD when it comes to pony hair. I've had bad luck, though, with kids and my toys. They tend to think that I'm giving them the toy, rather than letting them play with it while they're at my house. I don't usually let people in my room, anyway, though lol!

kids activate my germophobic side. I can't stand to handle anything that kids have touched with my bare hands. Or eat anything kids touched or helped make. I'd have to scrub the heck out of my ponies with bleach if kids got their hands on them, before I'd be comfortable touching them again
.
there are hardly ever kids in my house, and when they do come by I lock the door to the room where all my toy collections are. I hope I'm not coming off as mean tho, I do have some fakies and doubles of ponies I leave out for the kids to play with when they visit. I like kids ok, as long as they don't touch me, or any of my things.

I actually have 2 sets of G1s.  As I get upgrades for my originals, I set the originals aside.  My most loved ponies from my childhood collection are far from minty.  They've been all over the place and were very well loved over the years.  Those are the ones that I don't mind people playing with.  I've got some thrifted G3s as well, since most of mine stayed MIB.  My cousin's kids have destroyed/lost enough G1 stuff (like almost ALL my newborn accessories, and some of my german baby ponies), that I keep the rest off limits.

I don't allow children to play with my collection, period. I do keep a few doubles and baits though specifically for visiting children to play with, and the collection stays in a seperate room behind a locked door. If I had any children myself I'd probably end up  buying doubles of toys: one set for my collection, another set for the kids to destroy...errr, play with.

I have  ponies from my original childhood G1 collection that are still in excellent shape, so the thought of small children destroying them horrifies me. My husband has many of his original childhood Transformers as well (which are way more delicate that ponies) and he feels the same way.

I have my ponies and my 3yo has her ponies, so we play with her ponies and look at mine. She likes to count mine and have me tell her their names. When she gets a little older, we might play with mine, but we'll see. I do love to play ponies with her, though.

It's funny, though, I was in target the other day and the fs luna and celestia set was on sale. My girl LOVES luna and I wanted to get it for her, but I couldn't get them for her and not me, and I couldn't get them for me, but not her, and I couldn't get two sets, so  :(. Lol

So most of you know that I have 3 daughters who are all pony fanatics (even the baby!), and that I collect G4 ponies for them.  We have playtime where we will all sit with hair brushes and brush and style pony hair.  My middle daughter, Aria who is 6, is phenomenal when it comes to styling!!  I don't let them play with my wingers, save for this one time:

I'm not sure is it just me, but I don't think kids are that stupid/violent/messy as many thinks they are. :D
If I've said, that play CAREFULLY with mummy's toys, they mean a lot for mum, they get it. They play very nicely. I won't let them get scissors, pens or anything too creative near my ponies, that's the only thing I do. Otherwise I KNOW that they can play nicely with them. :)
Of course they are a bit rough what it comes with their OWN toys, but hey, boys are boys and many toys today are usually very poor in quality...

Back when my cousin was just five years old, I have pictures of him being let loose in my doll/pony room and playing with my ponies and Bratz. My grandparents had come down from Ohio and brought Hunter with them because they were raising him, and they wouldn't have handled it well if I had denied him access. So I supervised very carefully and we did have fun, but I just about got an ulcer that day. >.<

However, next time I see Hunter I am definitely going to bring pictures of him playing with my ponies. He's 12 now. XD

My uncle's girlfriend's 8-year-old granddaughter comes over every now and then and when she does, we LOVE playing ponies together. It's so cute... the first things she goes for are the sea ponies and the "night" ponies that have celestial symbols like Glory or Moondancer.

Honestly, she's older and she's aware that they aren't her toys, so I trust her well enough to be careful with them. She's usually pretty gentle so I told her she's welcome to play with my toys as long as she's gentle with them, she puts them back, and she gets somebody tall to get the ones on the top shelf. (We almost had an accident last Easter.)

Oh, and I had a Lemon Drop in my purse that I let my mom's cousin's granddaughter play with when they came to visit. She was about two, but I wasn't really worried. The worst she did was mess up the hair, and really, it's just hair.

The way I see it, they are toys, so they can take quite a bit of play. Obviously I won't let kids get too rough with them because they are collectables, but it's not like I'm collecting antique glass figures.

First of all, I really REALLY dislike kids. Second of all, NOONE ever gets near my stuff, specially ponies and stuff I adore and want to keep immaculately safe and sound. So yes, no kids will ever lay their eyes on my ponies, even. Which is great, because I don't intent on having kids either (my boyfriend agrees and loves the idea haha).

My kids are older now, so they are allowed to play with all my ponies, including G1s. They like setting them up in the playsets with all their accessories.

So anyone who ever buys my ponies, my kids have handled them at some point. :P

May I borrow your children? They could tidy all those accessories for me :)

I have a special bin of ponies that friends' kids can play with when they come over. Never my collection.  :lookround:

I don't have children so there is no reason for them to be anywhere in my home, let alone my Pony Room.  ;)

I have a not quite four year old daughter nicknamed Zilla who adores ponies so I just buy two of practically every G4 toy as it is released one for mommy and one for Zilla (no blindbags for her just yet). I keep my own MLP collection in my doll room which I keep locked, on the rare occasions she does make it in to the doll room she will bypass everything else in favor of MLP. She doesn't really do anything bad with them she just likes to rearrange them on the shelf and move my displays around a bit, she has never broken or ruined any of my ponies but she has helped herself to any MLP I leave in my spares box. She seems to love all the gens but she doesn't seem overly fond of G1 unless it's a baby or "mommy" Applejack so thankfully the G1s are safe from being rearranged.

I'd let kids play with my collection. They bring me joy and I'd like to spread the joy with others.

It depends.

I have two little sisters, one is 6 and one is 4. They have never messed up something of mine. xD (not yet..)

My regular, US G1 releases? Sure, they can play with em, but like said, I usually only let them do it in my room. xD

Meh, here is my view on nirvanas:

My italians & brazil ponies: A little bit more watched than my US ones. Again, I don't have any super-pricey ones of these.
My Germans: ..Mehhhhhh, I'd have to be sitting right by them.
My Argentinans: Only my not-as-high-price-tag ones, and they are super super super watched. I usually only let my sisters sit with me and hold them. ._.
Greeks: ....noooo.
Colombians & Venezuelan: NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. ;; /hides them...if I had one. ._.

...(don't have any greeks, colombians or venezuelans, but i may be soon. ._. )

Half my collection are childhood ponies, most of which I got second-hand as a kid.  They played in the gardens, took baths with me (but very few have any rust because my mom was always super careful about drying them afterwards), and got stuffed into backpacks.  Some of them are older than I am.  If a well-behaved child came over, I would have no problem letting her (or him) play with my ponies.  With the exception of Red Roses, Sunburst, and my customs.  I would tell them that I had those toys since I was their age and to please be gentle with them, but a toy is meant to be loved.

Now if the kid was a terror, that would be a totally different story.

When I have kids eventually, I fully intend to teach them to play nicely with toys and many of my ponies will be available to them.
