Title: Who were your first Ponies?
Post by: dragonfly on March 10, 2018, 02:28:06 PM
Bonus questions:

If you got into collecting as an adult but didn't have / play with / care about ponies as a kid, what was it about them that made you dive in?

if you had them as a kid, I'm curious to hear about "the itch" you had to reconnect with your ponies ... or maybe you never gave it up!

G1s. I was into them as a kid and watched the show.

The ponies I remember when I was really young were:
Windy-my first pony. Still need her back.
Sweet Pop-Uncle's dog chewed off her legs. 've reobtained her.
SS Gusty-Lost her in a move. I've reobtained her.
Shady-Still need her back.
Tug-Still need him back. Ooh if Bridge Direct makes Big Brothers again! :frolic:
Baby Wavedancer-I'm going to get her back eventually. Not high priority though.
Sweet Stuff-Still need her back.
Princess Tiffany-Still need her and Friendly back.

Later I added:
Mirror Mirror-Hoping to get her this year.
Sunnybunch-A school friend gave her to me. Need her back.
Dancing Butterflies-I've reobtained her.
Dazzleglow-My last childhood pony right before my mom decided I was getting too old for ponies. I've reobtained her.

I inherited my best friend's herd when Tales was starting to air.
Fizzy-I've reobtained her.
Whizzer-I've reobtained her.
Moondancer-Going to grab her when the 35th Anniversary Unicorns come out.
Baby Starflower
Lickety-split

I loved them dearly and I can't

I'm chose "something else". I started with G4, during the summer between Jr. High and High School, which I personally don't consider to be when I was a kid, but that's also not being an adult.

G1 as a child. First pony, Windy the Rainbow Pony. Mother bought her for me for Christmas in we think 1984. She found her in BHS in Sutton Coldfield on a pillar of Rainbow ponies. She had never heard of them and nor had I but she thought they looked so pretty and they were not expensive so she got me one to see if I liked it. She remembers choosing between Windy and Moonstone. Also that she thinks Skydancer was there but she didn't like her so much. I am amazed she remembers so much about something from so long ago, but she even remembered how the card looked (it got thrown out) and when UK carded ponies first came up online she was right.

MOC Windy on UK card is still an absolute grail want, because I don't remember seeing mine that way. I just remember having her.

Baby Blossom was the trigger to get me really interested. She had accessories, and Windy and Baby Blossom ended up as Mum and Baby. Never did have Blossom xD.

I collected ponies from 1984 till 1993ish. Then I went to secondary school. Got into pop music. Put them in the attic because Mum said I'd regret it if I got rid of them (SHE WAS RIGHT!). But sister still had hers down (She's 6 years ish younger) and I was still playing with hers (Her first pony was a second hand Fizzy for her birthday in 1990). So a year later they came down again.

Then we discovered MLP was no longer in shops. I wrote to Hasbro and they told me MLP was ended. We got a few ponies from them and more from a clearance shop that we found out about from my sister's best friend's mum (sister's friend also played with ponies). Then Mum or Dad suggested we went to the local carboot sale. July 2nd 1995 - yes, I remember - we found our first carboot ponies, Lickety Split and Parasol. That might not seem exciting but I never had either of them as a kid, and they were pretty prominent pony characters. So I was really excited. I always loved the old ones best.

2 years of carbooting later, I went to a library and looked up MLP online (summer 1997), found the Trading Post and Dream Valley. (I was 15). Made a post (with parent permission) including our phone number. Had a phonecall from the US. My first trade partner. Did a big trade with her in Spring of 1998 in person and also got connected online at home.

And that was how it happened. :)

My sister was 8 when we started carbooting. It meant she got new ponies almost every weekend. Lucky brat ;)

I had g3s as a kid. I was never really into them, I just liked plaiting and brushing their hair (as opposed to chopping off my dolls’ hair  ). I had quite a few fakies too, I didn’t mind, as long as they had hair to brush! I also had a fascination with putting beads in their hair, trying to imitate how the fakies sometimes came - except mine were a lot messier
My g3s were Periwinkle, Magic Marigold, Mc Donald’s cloud dancer, and wind drifter. I’m 16 now so I would’ve got them at 3, 4, and 5.

When I was in year 3 (about 8) I started getting interested again. I wanted to buy a g3, but only g3.5s were out now. So I started to collect them. I had a lot of fun playing with them, and then I started asking friends if they had any unwanted ponies, and I got quite a good collection that way. I also got my first g1s (tootsie, kisscurl, cherries jubilee) from a friend. Tootsies neck has some weird chunks out of it (like it’s been eaten). This made me scared of the three of them, cpbecause I thought that whatever had eaten tootsie was living in them, so I always put them to the bottom of the bag, poor things!

I started carbooting in 2012 ish, and I haven’t stopped since! The majority of my herd are car boot rescues, aside from g4, which I have bought mostly new. I say I wasn’t really interested in them but they’ve stayed out of the loft and have never been considered for any car boot that we did, so I must have loved them quite a bit!

I have no idea if any of you can confirm this being real, but one memory of seeing g3 on shelves was in about 2007-2008 ish, in Hamleys London, and there were some pony statues on the top of the shelf, and then just a WALL of ponyville.

I also used to read the corral here and the tp all the time when I was younger, my friend found it when we were looking at ponies and I thought it was like an actual arena where events took place! I also thought that the TP was literally a post where people met up to trade ponies xD I was so excited when I could finally join!

My sister got Applejack and Baby Moondancer as a kid first.  So then I got Windy for myself.  Later I would get Pinwheel, Magic Star, Paradise and others.  I would be forced to get rid of them because they were girl's toys.  Couple years later tried getting back into collecting.  Got Magic Hat, Boysenberry Pie and others.  Again I was forced to get rid of them.  Fast forward to 1996-1997, I stop at a flea-antique market and I find a Baby Yo-Yo.  And that was the start of the hunt!

It makes me so sad to hear about people being forced to part with their ponies because of stuff like that. Ponies are for everyone and gender shouldn't matter. I'm glad you are able to collect them now.

My first was a Twilight Sparkle blind bag I got back in 2012. At the time I didn't think I'd have much more than blind bags of the mane six. That didn't last long.

I'm not sure between G1 and G2.
I don't remember my childhood ponies. I got the two gen as kids, that's all I'm sure about

My mother goth the show stabble with somes ponies as gift for me from a coworker whose girl where "too old". I remember she came back with it in a plastic bag, and she was scared by how it was bulky and ugly ahah.
Also, I do remember playing with a dance n'prance pony, not sure wich one exactly, I was bothered by the huge button on the chest.

I'm SURE I get plenty of G2 too, as they where the current ponies when I was a child. My child "boyfriend" stole some of his sister G2 ponies and CD for me, to impress myself. I feel ashamed for his poor sister now.

But wich one I did get first? Total mystery. Wich ponies I get exactly? Cannot remember. But I do remember VERY WELL of the Show Stabble's bed. Ahaha... memory...

I got G3s as a kid, it was aroung 2003 or something. I got the picnic set with Applejack and Spring Fever at my grandma's as a birthday gift, I was 5. I already loved horses so I quickly made a bond with the ponies and I always wanted more. I eventually got my stepsister's G1s and her only G2 so I grew up with at least each of every gen so far at the time, I also had a copy of the good old MLP the movie and I liked it at the time.

I then got many more ponies, the butterfly island playset, Merryweather and her ballon Lilly Lightly + Lullabelle pack, the theme park playset, plushies (including one giant laying Toola Roola my dad bought to me at the hospital after my appendicitis), Minty's Christmas DVD etc... I loved to see the ponies in shops, I wished I could get them all. =D I kept the advertisings to see the other ponies I didn't have and saw them all the time on the paper.
Fun fact : I was already conserving their original boxes because they were their houses to me and I kept their brushes for each individual pony and had fun classifying them by color, brush gradients were pretty to me. ^^

So I literally did most of my childhood's time with ponies and I've always loved them.  When G3.5 came out, I discovered it by those ads that were in the pony boxes. When I saw them, they looked okay to me, but the more time I observed them, the more  I became so disappointed, I didn't like their designs at all and ended up really disliking them because they were just too weird looking. I was getting older, 8 or 9, maybe a tad more, so my parents didn't buy me any more ponies anyway.

So during G 3.5, I was starting puberty and all that, I played less and less with my ponies even though I loved them. That made me sad and I was wondering why I didn't play with them the way I did back then for so many time. But well, I put them in boxes and forgot about my ponies for a time.

Some years later, on July 2011, wandering the internet as always, I ended up discovering FiM and fell in love really quicly. I still remember watching S1 episodes at night, on an old laptop in the dining room, I was 13. ^^ But it didn't ring me a bell that it was G4, something brand new, I didn't know about gens at that time. I forgot about the toy aspect of the series. rofl. But it kept me into ponies  and I was still keeping all the ponies I had, I was lucky enough to grow up with parent's who don't automatically sell toys when you become "too old for toys" in their opinion.

It made me enjoy my ponies in a new way, that's when I started to put them on my bedroom's shelves as decoration, especially the playsets. Sometimes playing with them or something. I don't clearly remember those times. But I started to look for ponies in flea markets when I was a teen, I think. I especially asked my parents to find some for me. lol.

Still hooked to the show, in 2014 I made an unfortunate relationship with someone manipulating to make me think ponies are ugly and that I should stop collecting them. That's when I put them ALL in boxes. That person was really toxic and made me sad. I still watched FiM though, hiding it to him. I stopped looking for them in flea markets too.

Two years passed and I stopped this depressing relationship and nearly re-bonded with my ponies right after leaving him. I didn't have enough space so I kept them in the boxes, but I was loving them again, and looking for more and more again. I became more and more interested at how is it possible to restore them and all that, because they were in terrible shape, all dirty and frizzy. I looked for information and that's how I found the mlp restoration project and here's how I came here, passionate as ever. =D

So, yeah, that's how I became half old school pony fan and half "Brony". =D

Now, in present time, some of them are cleaned, some of them are from friends, flea markets, Mc Donald's exclusives, merch,... I document nearly everything I can, I restore them, I customize them, I make flutter wings,.... Around 20 of them are currently displayed in my paren't living room, all nice and clean. I can see them when I wake up, I hold them, pet them a little, observe them, remember them. At the moment, if I counted right, I have 152 ponies of all shape, gen and sizes. That makes me so happy, I want more and more of them, but cleaning them is time consuming. I'm also pretty reticent to clean them all up since they shall be stored in boxes anyway, so they'll end up with horrendously messy hair, that sucks. I won't have a pony room before many years, unfortunately, but I'm not loosing hope. ^^

Hope you like the story of my life with ponies. Have a great day !

Rose.

My first pony was a G3 Strawberry Swirl when I was 5 years old and I did absolutely everything with her and took her everywhere (I did have other influence via the G2 PC game but at the time I didn't know about the toy line). However, I really only caught the 'pony bug' and started seriously collecting when I got my first G1s, Paradise and Steamer, when I was around 7 or 8. I was a very mature and...studious?...child, so I immediately took them home and got on the computer to research them. I found Dream Valley and I was completely hooked. I spent hours browsing people's custom galleries, finding and watching the old cartoons, playing the little pixel games on Ponyland Press, and printing out my PonyIsland ponies to keep as little paper dolls.

I was from the G3 generation though, so while I adored the G1s and G2s and searched for them at every thrift store, antique store and yard sale, reveling in the thrill of finding one among the Hot Wheels cars and Barbies, I also watched the G3 movies and filled my birthday and Christmas wishlists with My Little Pony sets. I even had a MLP-themed birthday party once. I cut out the point tabs on all my pony's boxes, along with my sister, and I can remember the joy I felt when I had saved up enough to send in for Love Wishes. I even got to go to the Disney Build-A-Pony when it was open, and carry my little box back to the hotel room and dress Strawberry Swirl up in the princess outfits and tiaras.

If you had them as a kid, I'm curious to hear about "the itch" you had to reconnect with your ponies ... or maybe you never gave it up!

I only stopped collecting seriously when G4 came out. I'd pick up a few ponies here and there, but I lost much of the desire to collect, customize, and draw them. To be perfectly honest with you, I was among the small population who were not so thrilled about the style change. It was likely just because I had grown up with the more horse/pony-like MLP, while G4s look so stylized and different; I will readily admit that I don't like change so I didn't deal with it well in the beginning.

But I recently (within the last two years or so) gave FiM a chance, and while I actively avoid some of the more questionable parts of the fanbase, most of the fans are awesome people and the show itself is really good and has a lot of great morals in it that really impressed me. I think a lot of cartoons are lacking that nowadays, so to see a show that relates to the youth population of today while still instilling good morals and having such a creative fanbase of children and adults alike is really amazing to me. And it was neat seeing how they integrated ponies from the older gens into the show, which made me, as a pre-FiM collector, smile.

It also re-ignited the desire to collect and create things involving ponies again. Now, I've completely warmed up to G4 (my little herd of them is growing by the day) and am looking forward to G5! This was a hobby I really missed, and I'm happy to be back at it again and glad that I put aside stubborn pride and gave it a chance!

G2 Skyskimmer was my first, as a small kid. Then I got a few G1 ponies from antique stores, then G3 came out and I collected those and G1 simultaneously as a kid. I still collect G1 as an adult. So, technically G2 was my first, but I first really collected G1, used, as a kid.

Sparkler was the first pony I remember getting, but I had FF Minty and Applejack way back when to so I dunno. I was born the same year as year 2 so there is a chance I had them since I was a baby and just can't recall. I never gave up on my collection and still have my childhood ponies but there was a gap between the years when G1 ended, G2 ended, and ebay started :3

I had G3 McDonalds ponies. No actual G3s or any other ponies. I loved them to death though!

For the bonus questions, I followed along with G4, occasionally getting some brushables and watching the show a lot. I knew of G1 and the other generations but I though G1 was "ugly" (what I told some of my friends) My mom took me to an antique store, and I got bored and I came across this stall with lots of toys and a basket of overpriced G1s. I fell in love, and spent hours on the wiki and the MLPPP, and also as a guest on the Arena :D And my opinion of G1 being ugly has, of course, completely changed, haha!

G3 as a kid for me!

my first pony was sunny daze, as a birthday gift from one of my friends. <3 then rainbow dash was my second! i forget most of the others, but i know i had moondancer, star catcher, and wysteria as well.

somewhere along the line i parted ways with them, but when i was 13 g4 had just started and reminded me of my ponies. i wound up buying a G3.5 sweetie belle at kmart, and the rest is history! now i collect all gens, and have around 200+ ponies

seeing them each day has brought joy to my life, and im glad my interest was reignited!

I had g3 fluttershy and starswirl growing up, as well as all kinds of McDonald’s g3 ponies. But it wasn’t really my chief interest for collecting. It wasn’t until around 2014 I became into ponies. And 2016 when I wanted to collect all I have now.
I’m a bit sad that I never really played with mlp as a kid, preferring carebears or Barbie. But with all the joy my pony adventure has brought since 2014, I think that hole has been filled tenfold.

G1. As a kid my first pony was ft baby Northstar, but I called her Silver at the time as it was the name Firefly had in the first dub of Resuce at Midnight Castle. Next pony was either Milky Way or Majesty with the castle, TAF Sundance, on to Mainsail, Barnacle, Pony Bride and Tassles.

My reconnection happened in my late teens. I was 18 in 2002 and about to move out from home for the first time. Me and mom was in a supermarket to buy utensils and groceries for my kitchen when in the media area I found this huge bin with old VHStapes. It had everything from Rescue Rangers, Denver, Transformers and My Little Pony. I digged deep and found two MLP movies I remember loving as a kid and bought them. At home I was dissapointed as the voices weren't as I remembered as a kid and the ponies had their real names. I posted about it on my diary at a Swedish forum and a girl saw it, and invited me to an mlpgroup where I learnt about the different dubs and that you could buy the dolls on tradera. Next time I was at the supermarket I bought the rest of the MLPfilms they had and got the rest from the auction site before I decided to give the dolls a try three years later. Kind of stuck since. :lookround:

I got into ponies in 2013, aged 20 but still a kid at heart. I was helping my girlfriend clear out a cupboard and we found some of her childhood ponies (she had mostly G1 and a few G2; she used to get them in charity shops and at car-boot sales). I just thought they were really cute and awesome! We went on eBay to see what they were worth now, just out of curiosity, and were excited by all the cute ponies that were available. I especially liked Baby Ribbon; as it was nearly my birthday, my girlfriend bought her as a present for me! We were originally just going to have one pony each out on display: my Baby Ribbon and her childhood Little Flitter. Only somehow things got out of hand....especially when we discovered there was a new generation of ponies that you could buy in Tesco's while getting your groceries....

Four years and a few months later, and here we are knee-deep in ponies, dolls and other toys, ponies having acted as a sort of gateway drug to the wonderful world of toy-collecting. Some toys we collect for nostalgic reasons as one or both of us had them as children; others are more recent discoveries. For me toy-collecting is just about having fun, having something nice to think about when life is stressful, enjoying something without caring what people think. I like the creative side too, like doing restorations, taking photos, making up stories. I also like finding out the history of older toys like G1 ponies, because history is something I'm into. Ponies are such joyful little things, I think everyone should have something in their life that is just fun and makes them happy.

Sorry, I seem to have written a bit of an essay

I got my first pony so long ago when I was so young, I literally don't remember who it was. I feel like it was Peachy though. I absolutely started with G1s in the early 90s when they were actually still being sold in shops (I distinctly remember being in a toy shop with my mother at about 3? and seeing the roller skating ponies on sale) and that's how I got my Baby Sapphire and Baby Ruby. I remember opening them new in a KFC in Folkestone. All the rest of my ponies were secondhand, and I've kept the 70-odd I had as a child (barring some replacements such as Wind Whistler and Majesty) and my G2s, they've crossed a continent twice and I'm never, ever letting them go. They're stupidly important to me.

I grew up with G3s, and owned Rainbow Flash, Baby Romperooni, Petal Blossom, Baby Flower Flash, and Scooter Sprite. Scooter Sprite is the only pony I actually remember getting and opening on my fifth birthday. I was also given G1 Starglow, who was originally my older sister's. This was the only pony she ever had.

I still own all of my childhood ponies.

I got into G1s when I was 8 years old. I watched the cartoon sometimes. I mainly just love to play with them and go on adventures. I sometimes would act out plays with them. That was a fun time for me. I remember that my first pony was Cotton Candy I think. I got the plushie first I think. I did hear the plushies may have came out early so maybe I did get the plushie first then other ponies. 1982 is when I was introduced to ponyland. :)

My first pony was Baby Firefly when I was a kid. I think she was a gift from my grandmother. Probably all the ponies I had were gifts, because I was all about dogs as a kid and didn't have too many horse toys. I never even knew there was a cartoon until I joined the Arena  But I do remember watching Rescue from Midnight Castle, most likely at a friends house.

How I got into collecting and the community was because of customs actually! It was a G3 Pyramid Head pony in fact, though I don't know who by. I learned so much about MLP I never knew! My first pony as a collector was Wigwam and now I have an army of over 60 orange ponies (and some non-orange ones too!) :)

My first pony was Glory.  I adored her.   Then came about 20 more.  At the rate of 2-3ish a year.  It was all I wanted for Christmas and Birthdays.

After that, I simply held on to them and kept them under the bed/closet.  I think about 10 years later I bought one or two on eBay but wasn’t thrilled with the experience.  I also bought a couple of g2 and found g3 for my baby niece.  Then, I found this place and bought an entire lot on eBay and a few more in provide sales.  Oh, and I have a small group of G4s.  Honestly, I don’t want any more ponies.  But I still feel like a collector.  Just a pickier one.

Oh my gosh. I feel so so old seeing how many members say they had G3s as kids!! To me, it seems like G3s were just released yesterday lol!
My very first pony was Pina Colada. My cousin (only a couple of years older than me) had a few of the normal ponies and one plushie. I was sooo in love with them!! So my mom finally caved and bought me the first MLP she saw in store. I still have her and all of my other childhood ponies. My cousin even eventually gave me her plushie!
It’s funny though, I played with them for a couple of years, but once I hit 6-7 years old, they were no longer toys to me. They became my “collectibles” and I refused to let my poor friends play with them! They were just too special to me to risk any sort of damage to them!

My childhood ponies were G1. I had a good sized herd but I think Gusty was my first. I got into ponies again around 17. I'm not sure exactly how it started but I know it started with my Care Bears and then pulling my other 80's toys out of storage and then trying to identify them online. I got into garage sales and flea markets and started buying on ebay. Then I moved out at 21 and all the collection went back into storage in my parent's loft of their garage for like 10 years. Then when my daughter was 4 I went to my moms and got my ponies for her to play with. After a few weeks I decided I wasn't ready to let them go so I let her keep some, took the rest back and bought her new G4's instead.  Now I have my pony room.

G3 were my first ponies, I got my first ones when I was 3 or 4. I also frequently played with my aunts childhood G1 ponies at my grandmother's as they were in her basement, and then later she gave me her ponies aswell, so then G1 was kind of a childhood thing for me too. They're both very nostalgic to me, but not in the way G1's are nostalgic to actual 80's kids. I wish I could feel that nostalgia too!

I voted G3 though as they were my firsts.
(I think technically fakies might've been my real firsts, though >.>)

If we want to be really technical I think my very first pony was a McDonald's G2 Ivy, but I hardly count her because I do remember playing with her some, but not very often. The very first pony in my family was a G3 Cotton Candy my sister got for her birthday, and then my first pony was a G3 Sparkleworks. I still remember going to Toys r Us  and picking her out. I thpugh she was cool with having fireworks as her symbol! And from there I was super hooked. I never took a break from ponies at all, honestly every year that went by my love for them kind of only grew stronger even though I was well into the age where it wasn't cool to play with toys anymore. I rode it out by drawing them and finally running across collectors online. I realized I could call my old toys a collection and have a good reason to hang on to them even if they weren't being played with.
The only break I feel I took with the brand was around the whole core 7 downfall. I stopped buying for a few years and kind of started moving on to other things, although I could never bring myself to get rid of my collection. Then my dad ran across the 1st episode of FiM and recorded it for me. Once I got past the initial shock of the change in tone and style, and the fact there was even going to be a regular TV series, I got super hooked again!
Everyone all through my childhood and well into high school always told me I'd outgrow the ponies one day. I'm honestly so proud I can now say well into college that they were wrong. ;) My love for colorful horses isn't going anywhere!

My first pony was flat foot Minty, then I got Star Shine followed by Wave dancer, BBE Lofty and Tuneful. I also had the Cotton Candy MLP bag. I lost The bag, Star shine, Lofty and my Minty. I have my sisters Minty. I still have Wave dancer but I lost her shell, and I still have Tuneful. I re acquired Star shine, BBE Lofty but the bag is almost impossible to find. Star shine was my favorite.. Because we were very poor when I was a child they were the only ones I ever had.

Now I have at least 89 G1/G2 ponies I have been buying via ebay. I have a huge collection of G3s,  about 7 G3.5s (not a big fan) which is what got me back into collecting since 2003. And I have selected G4 and G4.5

My first ponies were G1s, which were presumably given away at some point when my dad apparently thought my sister and I were "too old" for them, because I remember turning the house upside down and not finding them. :/ I got back into ponies on a nostalgia kick and collected them for a while, then rehomed most of them just to keep the ones that were replacements for my childhood favourites. There's less maintenance involved that way, although I do still need to sort the frizz at the end of Posey's tail! :P

I do not remember having a lot as a kid, but I did hold onto my Medley and TAF Milky Way. After my two daughters were about 5 and 6, I found out that people were still buying them on ebay. So I bought my youngest a Cotton Candy for her birthday. That did it. From then on I was looking for all the old ponies I could find. Then I was buying G3 lots, cleaning them and selling them for money to put into G1s, and got hooked on the G3 as well lol.

I can't remember for sure, but my first pony was either So soft paradise or Masquerade. My fondest memory was debating on whether to buy Barnacle or Cheif. Mom kept telling me to hurry up. I ultimately decided on barnacle, because pirates!

My first pony was Gusty.   I had seen a circus on TV that had a "unicorn" (one horned goat) and wanted to remember that so the next day while shopping with my Granny and she let me get a toy.   I had hoped there would be an all white unicorn but nope so Gusty it was that came home with me.   She also got me the Best of the West outfit for her although it doesn't fit unicorns that well.

I was around 7 years old at the time and although I love horses, for some reason I had thought MLPs were silly up to then.  Fell in love with Gusty and was hooked ever since.

Birthdays etc usually meant more ponies over the next years.   Then when I got old enough to go to yardsales on Saturday mornings on my bike, I uses to hit all the ones in my area and buy whatever ponies I could afford.

My first my little pony was Posey. I was so young when I got her that I don't even remember it so it's like she's always been there. I played with my little ponies during the 80s and early 90s. When I was 18 I decided I wanted to start collecting ponies. I don't remember how I came up with that idea but I probably read about collecting my little ponies online and became inspired because the first ponies I bought as an adult were on Ebay.

I've recently taken up collecting again after having been on a hiatus for a very long time since now I finally have a big enough home to properly display a collection. Also I'm at a time in my life where I want a bit of nostalgia. I'll be 35 this year and my childhood feels so distant these days. Like a hazy happy memory of something which can never be again. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy being where I am in life, happy being 35, but I want to bring a part of my childhood with me into this time and place. It's my way of combining the happy past with a happy present into my own mix of awesomeness.

I got some G1 ponies that my aunt handed down to me. She is seven years older then me and thought they were not cool anymore. I loved them! I got a few others from my parents and friends till the G2 came out. I did find a few puzzles at rummage sales! And the My Little Pony Movie on VHS also at a rummage sale! I did not have a lot as a child growing up but I loved all of it! :)

I played with G2 as a kid! I was too young to really have picked them out for myself, so my mom probably picked them for me, but I loved them.

I was "too old" by the time G3 came out, I was around 10, but they reminded me of my G2s (which I still had) and I asked my mom to get me some! And I just kept collecting them.

They were always so special to me I never gave them away. So when G4 came around I brought out my G2/G3 collection and haven't put them back!

I don't remember my absolute first pony, but some of my first ones were Moonstone, Mom and baby Surprise (I lost Mom Surprise when I was young), Wavedancer, and BBE Halfnote and the Ballet Dance School. I LOVED that Ballet Dance School Playset. It got used a lot! I remember my mom would laugh because I'd say "ballot" box instead of ballet box. I didn't know why that was so funny until years later. I have an Applejack with chopped hair which I have no memory of doing, but I suppose I did. I have a couple of baby sea ponies as well that I had from year 3.

I was born in '79, so I had them as a kid. The only one I remember getting in a store was a plush parasol from TRU when I was quite young.  I remember taking windy, skydancer and sprinkles in the tub with me too.

Fast forward 20 years...

The mall had these computer kiosks back in the early 00's and I caught my sister looking up care bears on Ebay. Guess what I looked up?

I was born in 85, so ponies were a huge part of my childhood.  My mother frequently would come home from the shops with a new pony for me just as a treat even though it wasn't my birthday or anything (gosh she spoiled me!  ^.^).  My twin brother had a herd of ponies also, and we both watched the My Little Pony and Friends cartoons on the weekends, and then I'd sit through GI Joe and X-Men.  All of my friends had ponies too, they were everywhere in my childhood.

Tragically, my collection somehow got lost in the move when my parents divorced, and I still wonder where my poor ponies ended up  I think it was the discovery of eBay and online secondhand markets that rekindled my interest in collecting ponies.  It was so exciting to realise that I could find vintage ponies online which I had never seen in stores and had never owned as a child.  I have re-bought all of the ponies I remember having when I was little, and have now expanded my herd WAY beyond my modest childhood collection.  Still need so many more though!  Will be collecting for a long time yet ;)

I like how so far NO ONE started with G2 as an adult, and everything else has 1-5 aside from the majority who had g1 or g3 as a kid.

I had a few when I was a kid. BBE Gusty, Dancing Butterflies, Cranberry Muffins, and Shoreline (the sunshine pony that I didn't remember having as a kid!)

Then G2 came out and I had MM Ivy, Secret Surprise Petal Blossom, and Secret Surprise Morning Glory.

I lost track of MLP after G2 vanished and it wasn't till 2007-2008 that I found out about G3 after I became friends with someone and another friend showed me MLP Arena and customizing and well 2009 was when I fully got back into MLP.. must to my family's regret now.

Bit of an odd story: My first pony was a bait G1 glory.
I got into collecting in 2012 at 15 years old when I was really into G4. My grandparents decided to feed into my obsession and buy me a big lot of bait ponies of various generations, and the first one I really connected with was a tail-less Glory who kickstarted my want for collecting more of every generation.
Tailless Glory is now with a friend of mine who's taking MUCH better care of her than I ever would have been able to.

My first ponies were a small group of hand-me-down G1's from my mother.

Gusty, Glory, Firefly, Moondancer, Sparkler and Gingerbread. As I mentioned on my introduction post, all of my childhood ponies were taken by my brother and sold for drugs. I only really got back into ponies because my friend mew sent me a small box full as a gift. Thanks to her, I've at least managed to get Glory back, and she only needs a new tail and minor glitter touch up which I can do very easily once I get the supplies.

I'm hoping to be able to get them all back and thensome eventually. Not through ebay, though. The shipping in Canada is bad enough without ebay tacking on more.

Tailless Glory is now with a friend of mine who's taking MUCH better care of her than I ever would have been able to.

Funny thing about it is that Tailless Glory wasn't what I'd consider bait at all. I have no idea what she was even doing in there because it would've been a huge shame if someone baited a pony that only needed some minor restoration... I can't wait to be able to restore her to her former.... -snrk- Glory.

I had G1's as a kid. They were trades from friends. I was probably trading some other toy for them like Barbies or something. I had about 14 in total? It was enough to fit in a large Christmas nativity display that I used for their stable. The only ones I distinctly remember having were WigWam, Parasol, and maybe twice-as-fancy Sugarberry? I know that my friend had her and I'm pretty sure all my friend's ponies usually fell into my hands through trading.

The only G1 pony I distinctly remember getting at the store was an orange pony that was transluscent with sparkles inside. Does anyone know who I'm talking about?

The G2 ponies completely passed me by. Maybe they didn't advertise for them enough? I don't even remember them being on toy shelves in the 90's. Though I know they did have a limited run here in the US. If I had known about them, I would've gotten them too!

While G1 I had a small herd and only considered them just some of my toys in the toybox, G3 was when ponymania really kicked in for me even though I was older by that time.

Ahh, thank you so much! Yes, that's her! I remember as a kid almost being disappointed that my mom pulled her down from the rack and walking away with her because I thought she was a cheap knock-off! I had never seen any My Little Ponies that were semi-clear like that so I didn't know.

I grew up with G1s, my first as Bluebelle around age five. I remember buying Butterscotch for a cousin's birthday. And being puzzled about the pony with the candy name and butterfly markings. After going "ewww, those are for girls" my mom braided her hair. That done I happily ran off to put her among my Star Wars toys. Thus began many happy years of collecting ponies. Which till I was given my first play set, hung out in Jabba's thrown room.

As an adult, it was G3 Kimono at TRU. Found by accident one day and had me going "they're back? they're back!".

I had G1 as a kid. I'm not sure if any were ever mine as opposed to my sibling's because when I was born and then very young, G1s were near their end. My memories of them don't start until around the ages of 7-9, roughly. Wigwam is the only one left, and I have the clearest memories of him. I remember when I cut his hair, proudly showed my mom and said I was excited for it to grow back and try something else next time, and then hysterically sobbing when she had to explain to me that it wasn't real hair and would never grow back. I also remember Dancing Butterflies (loved her colours, disliked her pose), as well as Baby North Star (the one leg up really irked me for some reason, but I liked her face and wings). I feel like we had one of the Glow 'n Show ponies at some point, but I don't know which one (Starglow seems vaguely familiar, but I just don't remember). Chocolate Delight is another I think we had, and I definitely remember having her scented soda. I think we also had a Secret Surprise, maybe Secret Beauty, but that's another vague one. I think there may have been a Merry Go Round and a Dream Beauty along the way, but I don't know which.

We also had a blue lunchbox with all of the Merry Go Round ponies on it and the Thermos that I used whenever I could. I think it was ruined by some spilt food that wasn't cleaned properly. I've been wanting to replace it.

The final items I remember from childhood are VHS tapes of some of the show's episodes that I watched frequently. I distinctly remember Fugitive Flowers and The Revolt of Paradise Estate. I mainly watched them for the credits; I loved the music and the scenes from the first special, and I liked the drawing and character design better. I wanted to know more about it, and find more ponies, but didn't know how when I was so young and they weren't being made.

When I was a little older, about 11-13, a kid I knew had older G1s, and I played with them all of the time. I managed to find some of my family's old toys, but I think I only found Wigwam and three PVC Care Bears. But after revisiting them, I wanted to learn more and find more. Luckily, the internet was more accessible by this time, so I was able to start learning, and using eBay with my mom's help. Dream Valley became my favourite site to visit, I was able to see the first special on Youtube, I was able to start collecting from eBay, and I have been slowly building my collection since. Discovering regional exclusives and nirvanas was pivotal for me, and they have become somewhat of a fixation for me.

And now here I am!
