Title: Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wind (opinions)
Post by: Cassie85 on March 04, 2017, 04:38:17 AM
Hoping to hear everyones opinion on the new game. I will go ahead and start.
I've been watching my boyfriend play the game for about 4 hours and and, as much as I hate to say it, I hate it. I really did not like Skyward Sword, but this one I really and truly hate. What is with the stupid smart phone/tablet? What is with the space age junk that keeps popping up? No cutting grass to get hearts? No Epona or other special mount? What is up with Impas charactor? In past series I thought her charactor was more middle eastern in nature, now suddenly she is asian. The game seems to be borrowing off of elder scrolls and forgetting what made it Legend of Zelda.
My boyfriend and his buddies are squealing like school girls over everything. I'm the only one complaining that none of this feels like Zelda.

I've been playing it quite a bit since I got it yesterday and I'm enjoying it so far. The open world really encourages exploration and keeps it from feeling too linear. When I got to the bit where you catch and tame a wild horse... well, it basically became Horse Taming Simulator 2017 for me, I spent hours picking out my favourite horses (I'm not kidding, hours lol). Plus, through the use of Amiibo you can actually have Epona, I'm going to hunt down the Amiibo tomorrow!

So far I like all the changes they've made. The durability on weapons takes some getting used to, I really want to find a sword that will last a significant amount of time, but it's not terrible. It's got me thinking outside the box on how to take on large groups of enemies instead of just running in swinging. I like the crafting/cooking and the eating to heal too, I've not slept to heal yet but it's only early in the game. I keep getting distracted by side quests.

So I like the game so far, my boyfriend and I are taking turns playing but he'll have to fight me most nights. ^.^

PS. I didn't like Skyward Sword either, what I played of it I didn't enjoy so I never gave it a proper chance. :P

Personally, I think the game is incredible. After tons of 3D Zeldas following the same formula as OOT, they finally took the series somewhere new. Not only is it somewhere new, but it really is on an entirely different level.

I can see how it won't be for everyone. But as for me, who has always really liked exploring the beautiful worlds of Zelda, this game is perfect. The land is HUGE. Not only is it huge, but it is alive. I love the inclusion of wildlife. All of the wildlife species are animated lifelike. The grass and trees blow with the wind. You'll notice even the hair and clothes of people move with the wind. Such incredible attention to detail.

Without going into detail, the new "items" in this game are also really neat. I was blown away by the first one. In past 3D Zelda games, a lot of new items have been introduced, but this one felt like an item made for a far more advanced game than past Zeldas... and that's what this game is. The mechanics shown by that item and its use in the first shrine are far more advanced.

I'm sorry the technology bothers you. We were already shown that there was a technological age in the Zelda world in Skyward Sword. Personally, I found that to be one of the most entertaining aspects of that game. To me, the technological features in BoTW really just help make the open world gameplay less tedious, they don't really harm the game.

You can unlock Epona with the Link amiibo for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. :)

So Epona is locked behind "DLC". Kind of crappy, but seeing as there are wild horses in the game to tame, I'm not too mad about it.

Not related to gameplay, but who else was shocked and upset that you have to buy and expansion pack to play the full game. So you shell out $60 for the actual game, and then an extra $20 for the expansion, bring the total for rhis game up to $80. If this is the direction Nintendo plans on going with their games, thats really sad.

Um.. What does the EP even add? I don't have any Expansion Pack in my game, and this game looks and feels completely full to me. In fact, it is the only game I've ever paid $60 for that actually feels like that full $60 was justified.

Just wanted to pop in for a moment... I'm going to try and avoid getting too involved with this because Zelda is my utmost passion (more than ponies! lol) and I want to avoid heated debates.  :P Anyway, advanced technology has been present in Zelda for years, through many titles. It was especially prominent in Skyward Sword (IMO, a fantastic game) so it's nothing unusual for it to be in Breath of the Wild. The very first teaser for the game (from years ago) highlighted this with a Guardian and super high-tech weapons.

The *big* DLC they're working for this winter is going to add more to the story...  I was very peeved at first when I heard about it but once I found out that the dlc is for things still in development I didn't mind as much. It's better than the game being delayed another year. What we have right now IS the full game. Basically they had finished it and came up with even more ideas they wanted to build upon.

I'm also loving what they've done with health in this game. In previous titles health and hearts were always readily available and I would get a game over maybe once per playthrough.

Also... there's tons of horses in this game? I don't mind if Epona is an amiibo feature. (I actually didn't know how to get her until reading this thread... eep, spoilers XD) the thing I was MOST excited about in this game was taming wild horses and choosing my own. I would have paid full price just for the horses.

Waiting for Breath of the Wild all these years has been my main motivation to get me through some really hard times... and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.  :)

So I am a NOVICE Zelda fan.
I've played Minish Cap (WHICH I LOVED) and just finished Twilight Princess with a lot of help and guidance from my boyfriend because
A. I hate battles and
B. I am terrible at some parts of the game.

I'm watching him play BOTW and it is VERY pretty! I have to give Nintendo credit because it is a beautiful game. There is so much to do, too much maybe, and very easy to get sidetracked.
I am also not crazy about the technology, but if it was present in Skyward Sword than it makes more sense here.

We HATE the voiceovers. They are awful voice actors, and it really ruins any moments you're having with these characters.

All this being said...this game is hard. I will probably never actually play it in full, ever, because it looks impossible for someone like me who loves Animal Crossing and Paper Mario.

I do love cooking, love the horses, love changing clothes, dying clothes and more!

As for the DLC and Amiibo features, Nintendo does want to make money, and you do not read to buy all these things to play or finish the game. But I understand why they do it, like when I finished Fantasy Life they had a $10 DLC that expanded the game, and I bought it because I wanted to keep playing in this sweet world, and I don't mind giving a fantastic company like Nintendo my money.

I guess flaws aside, its great to have a new Legend of Zelda game, so I'm just going to enjoy watching it :D

Well, I like "open world" type games like Witcher 3 and Skyrim- so although I haven't played this yet- I'm really looking forward to it!

I'm enjoying the game. I already have 5 horses, all named after Naruto characters. (Still trying to find the perfect Kakashi horse, lol.) I don't find the BOTW technology as jarring as the train in Spirit Tracks. I still can't get over the train. My kids are enjoying the game too. I imagine it would take forever if you were a completionist.
Title: Re: Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wind (opinions)
Post by: Hannah66665 on March 06, 2017, 07:59:21 PM
Oddly enough, the trains in Spirit Tracks made a lot more sense to me... plus, Spirit Tracks takes place long after most games, so technology is advancing. My sister disagrees and thinks the trains make less sense than the technology in Breath of the Wild, though, so everyone has their own take.

If you want to go back even further, Link's Awakening (gameboy, 1993) had telephones and a claw machine game and Majora's Mask had alien-ghosts descend upon a farm in their flying saucer.

I'm kind of eh... on the voices. I'm really, REALLY disappointed that there isn't an option to hear the original japanese voice acting with english subtitles. There was no reason for that not to be an option. The english voices aren't ruining it for me... but a lot of them just don't sound right.

I think the perfect solution would have been to do things similar to the game Shadow of the Colossus... have the voice overs be a fictional language with subtitles. No need for a dozen different dubs.

Hmmm... I think you were mislead. The expansion pass will add some content in the future. A dungeon or something? I think right now all it adds is some items.

Yeah, some gamers believe that if there's any DLC it's something taken from the game to deliberately make gamers pay more, not an addition to an already complete game. I'm definitely going to buy it, my partner is all about increasing the difficulty and the first DLC pack includes Hard Mode.

I don't like how small the dungeons are compared to the old ones, idk if they'll be any bigger later on (I only just got the paraglider). It also feels clunky to keep dropping weapons for new ones, even having to open a chest twice instead of having a "swap" feature.
Though I do like how the open world aspect and how you can choose what order to do stuff in. Makes it feel more like the older games.

As far as technology, Zelda has had some form of technology present in several games. Robots in Skyward Sword, a telephone and claw machine in Link's Awakening DX, a train in Spirit Tracks, fast mine carts in multiple games.

I haven't played it yet because I'm having some difficulty tracking down the WiiU version.

Impa has always oscillated from wise woman to warrior chick.

Epona being locked behind an amiibo is annoying, but there are other horsies to tame so yay!

Can't comment on weapons durability, but it's not the first time it's happened. The Goron Sword.

I am annoyed and disappointed by the DLC, I'm disgusted by the return of the stupid stamina meter.

I'm also annoyed by the lack of proper dungeons, a bunch of dinky mini dungeons don't cut it for me. It worked in Majora because the world is so compact and the mini dungeons weren't quite so small, but here? No.

I'm loving the return of open world, because that's a return to its roots.

I'll give better thoughts once I can find the WiiU version.

I will agree that the mini dungeons and only a few main dungeons are a drag. I love me some dungeon action. I do, however, like the mini-bosses out in the open.

The stamina meter isn't my favorite thing, but I guess it makes sense with all the mountain climbing. He'd be OP if he could climb all the things right off. However, going out of steam when you're running away from the bad guys is not so fun.

The status effects are an interesting mechanic for Zelda. I think I welcome it. Some of the new mechanics in this game remind me a bit of Minecraft.

I'm disgusted by the return of the stupid stamina meter.

Personally, I disagree. Sure I understand it is annoying, however, in this game I think it is completely appropriate. It adds a sense of realism and struggle to the large adventure in the wilderness that this game is.

For example, if you see a large lake, you can't just simply swim from one side to the other with no thought like in past Zelda games. Instead, you - like you would if this were the real world - would either have to have a craft to cross it, or you have to traverse around it.

Personally, it just adds to the immersion of the game for me. It adds to the feeling that exploring the world is treacherous, and not just a stroll in the park.

Quote
I'll give better thoughts once I can find the WiiU version.

I had to buy it digitally, and in order to do so I had to put in on a flash drive.

Sounds ridiculous, but I think this game is 100% worth it.

Nevermind he never needed one before. I'll never understand why people think it's great to have Link run for ten steps and then start slugging around like he's gonna keel over and die any second, gasping for breath.

He can survive being dropped into lava with naught but singed buttcheeks, he can breath deadly volcano fumes, he can go for days without sleep, he can be a one man army, but he can no longer run for longer then a few steps. Yay realism.

The stamina in Skyward Sword I found annoying, the stamina in Breathe of the Wild on the other hand is nothing to complain about in my opinion. It's realistic to only be able to sprint in bursts and have to slow for a few places to recover so you can speed up again. I'm having absolutely no trouble with it, I enjoy climbing mountains and reaching the summit, it makes it feel like a real achievement. Link feels like a real character trying his best to be the hero Princess Zelda needs him to be.

I like the shrines, it's an interesting concept to be exploring the world for shrine challenges instead of being pointed towards a dungeon and spending the next few hours doing linear puzzles. You find so many more fascinating things along the way as you climb to the highest peak to search the surrounding area for a glowing shrine.

Not to point any fingers but it's a bit odd that there's so much negativity coming from people who haven't even played the game yet. It's a bit disheartening to people who are excited to see Nintendo doing something new with the franchise to improve it.

It's still stupid. If I hated it in SS, why would I suddenly love it in BotW? That makes no sense.

I'm not forgiving Anouma for ruining the game by bringing it back anytime soon. I sometimes don't even know if I want to spend money on this thing they call a Zelda game anymore.

Stamina meter, cut content you hafta pay for,100 mini dungeons in lieu of a healthy mix of mini and main dungeons and the version it was originally intended for being difficult to find.

They had a game I was thrilled to death to play because Zelda is my favorite gaming series ever. But then they decided to take a steaming dump on it with dumb decisions

As an avid gamer I'm just gonna leave this here. Games no matter who is making them will evolve over time. COD is moving further and further away from what it originally started out as. It only makes since for Zelda to be the same way. And while you can never please everyone all the time it seems to be preforming well. My buddy that works at GameStop said he had more preorders then systems coming in. Just move on if it's not the right game for you. There are Zelda games I hate that I refuse to accept as Zelda games. I just move on and find something else to play.

Hold on a second, there. You seem to be referring to stamina specifically when running. Now here's the thing about that - in past Zelda games Link couldn't run. Skyward Sword added the extra running option, and with it came the stamina bar.

Link can "run" as he did in OOT, MM, Wind Waker, etc. just fine without ever running out of stamina, it's if you do the fast run that you have the stamina bar.

It's still stupid. If I hated it in SS, why would I suddenly love it in BotW? That makes no sense.

Well, you can have your opinion all you want. I'm pretty sure that Nintendo is currently working on the additional content coming, meaning it wasn't cut out.

As for me Breath of the Wild is what Zelda needed. It is what Nintendo needed. Skyward Sword was a fun game with plenty of pros, BUT the turn to linearity, no open field to roam in, etc. it just really took away from the Zelda experience for me.

Personally, I'd much rather have this large open world with so much to explore than another standard formulaic Zelda game with dungeons and limited exploration. Sure, past Zelda games have very iconic dungeons, but this game has an iconic region to explore.

This point annoys me in particular when people haven't even played the game yet. In skyward Sword if you sprinted until your stamina was empty you would double over to recover and wouldn't be able to move, that's why it was disliked.

In Breath of the Wild it's different! When you sprint and deplete your stamina you slow to a jog, you can keep moving while your stamina refills. If you pace yourself and don't let your stamina completely deplete you can sprint/run/sprint in a realistic fashion. Big difference, major improvement.

You try sprinting across a football field without slowing and tell me how realistic it feels.

You are all entitled to your opinions, but until you actually experience it for yourself your opinions are virtually baseless. Sorry I'm getting so riled up, I don't mean to offend anyone so sorry if I sound harsh. It's like having an opinion of a movie you've not seen, only watched trailers of or read a review about, ect... Assumptions make an ass out of you and me.

I love the game, it's not for everyone, and sure I don't love everything about it, but I'm enjoying the experience of playing it.  ^.^

Can't play what I can't find. Oh no how dare I not like a crappy mechanic or the fact that they're withholding a dungeon and story mode behind dlc? I'm perfectly entitled to my opinions. Climbing, pushing and doing certain sword moves was also obnoxious with the stamina meter.

And once again, if we're talking realistic, no one should be able to survive falling in lava or being hit in the head multiple times with a spiked ball and chain, or being rolled over by giant lizard monsters armored by nothing but a tunic and a shield.

I don't play a fantasy game for its realism.

If I want a good open world Zelda I can still play the original. Not to mention 12 other games in the series.

I don't want to argue with you if you've already made up your mind. If you're so insistent to hate a game you haven't played yet then save yourself the money and don't bother.

I'm sorry you're having trouble finding the game as well, I've heard American stores have issues with distribution and I'm not too impressed with Nintendo's latest trend of creating demand with false rarity (eg. Amiibo & Classic Mini Snes).

Have an open mind, stop comparing Breath of the Wild to Skyward Sword, Nintendo is taking Zelda in new directions and they deserve to be respected.

Wow- some strong opinions in here!  :lookround:

So hopefully I can download this game onto WiiU?

I haven't actually checked yet-  have been playing Witcher3 and I had a dream last night that I looked into the downloads section and the Breath of Wind game was there!  I was so happy...

Such a dumb dream, haha  I didn't even get to play it... I guess my brainz couldn't figure out how it would look...

Yes, you can download BoTW digitally - if you have enough space on your system!

I didn't. I had to insert a flash drive. lol

Hey guys, I haven't played this yet.

I watched a review of it on youtube. The game looks simply breathtaking and the horsetaming thing alone piques my interest. XD

I don't have a Switch and I don't want to buy a WiiU so I will have to wait  until the Switch and game are readily available.

But I have a VERY embarrassing confession to make, you guys. I have NEVER beaten a Zelda game. The ones I have played are the GBC ones (really hard), OoT, and Twilight Princess. Yeah, I am pathetic, I know. I either lose interest or give up.

I heard this one is pretty hard. I almost want it just to explore the world.

I am the type of person who loves games like Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, Animal Crossing, and Style Savvy.    I don't know if I would be wasting my money on this. I mean, in Grand Theft Auto 3 I got hours of entertainment out of beating people up and stealing cars and exploring the city and not even progressing the story. XD  The open world concept of this game attracts me.

I really hate dungeons too. I have a feel that dungeons in this game will be very hard.

Though I will get a Switch eventually. I am sure Nintendo will make an Animal Crossing for it. And, I know XSeed is currently developing a Story of Seasons game for it. That makes it worth a purchase alone, to me. And I am sure along the way there will be more games I want for it.

I'm like you, I get more enjoyment out of games like Animal Crossing.

The thing about BoTW is that it does let you explore. You could explore this game all you want without ever touching any of the dungeons.

The game *is* noticeably hard, though. You will die many, many, many times.  Exploring is very treacherous. But as long as you save a lot (the game has a much better saving system than past Zelda games), you can just laugh about it and move on.

All of this yes!! Your game taste sounds just like mine! And after watching my boyfriend play this game, it is a serious NO for me haha.
I just beat Twilight Princess with some help (I'm a wimp), but this game looked very hard and also super frustrating.

Also now that the game is finished, I will just say that the general story had no real feelings for me. It feels very shallow :(

I just want to touch on one point really quickly. Watching your boyfriend play won't really give you a proper feel for the game. My boyfriend and I are both playing Zelda and our play styles are vastly different but we're both enjoying it. He is more battle oriented, and I'm more explore oriented. I've seen him die repeatedly to enemies that I carefully avoid because I don't really feel like taking a risk when I just want to be on my way. The parts of the game I was worried would be too hard for me he reassures me really aren't that bad. My favourite bits are the puzzles that look so complicated, but if you take a moment you can find the simplest solution, makes me feel like a smart cookie. :P

My all time favourite game series is Harvest Moon, and I love playing GTA5 to do random stuff instead of the story (but of everyone I know I'm actually closest to finishing the main game, online multiplayer silliness is where it's at lol). When I was younger I never finished a Zelda game without my older brothers' help, but as an adult I'm determined to finish them on my own. My boyfriend will give me tips but I refuse to hand over control. I've already gotten hours of enjoyment out of the game and haven't done a 'dungeon' yet. My main goal is to see how high up mountains I can encourage my horses and to take selfies with them.

I'm not saying you will enjoy it, just that it's worth giving a proper chance of your own if you have the opportunity. I watch a lot of YouTube Let's Plays, it's fun to watch but nothing compares to the experience of playing.

Sorry I'm being so passionate, I just wish people would give this game a chance instead of basing their opinions on 2nd hand experiences.  :(

I love this game. <3 I'm a huge fan of the older Zelda games as well, but this is the best one. It's such a beautiful and fun game. I just love being able to freely explore Hyrule.

It sounds like maybe I should just wait for an Animal Crossing or the Story of Seasons game being released on the Switch before I buy one. But if my brother buys the Switch I can watch him play this game. But all of you enjoy. :)  I'll admit the horse taming simulator is enticing.

My friend accidentally ordered BotW for the Wii U when he preordered his Switch, but he kept the game anyway and let me borrow it after he got the Switch version.

I haven't had much time to play, but I got around to starting and getting off of the plateau last night. I like it so far! Still glad that I didn't preorder a Switch just for this game though, since it plays fine on the Wii U (plus all the games I'm really waiting for on the Switch won't be released for a little while). The only downside is not being able to take the game with me, since I do spend a lot of time out of the house these days.

I have two friends who are HUGE Zelda fans. For the record, I'm not that big a fan. I like the franchise, but haven't played all of the games and I don't really plan to as I don't care that much. My favorite Zelda games are Windwaker and Link Between Worlds. Knowing this, my friends both highly recommended I play this game. One of them said "As a game, I give this an 8 out of 10. As a Zelda game, I give it a 4." I actually liked his honesty about it not feeling like Zelda, but still being fun.

So yeah, I have high hopes. Now that I'm off of Tutorial Island (as my friend called it) I can form a better opinion once I start to progress.

Details of the Breath of the Wild DLC (http://gonintendo.com/stories/279322-nintendo-details-the-first-dlc-pack-for-zelda-breath-of-the-wild) have come out, and I just have to say I'm not feeling like this is a must-have addition. Some nice little things here and there, but really... Nothing that makes it feel like the BoTW we got in March was incomplete. =)

Really... They could do so much better with costumes than that. IMO. But I suppose a lot of the best costumes are locked behind Amiibo paywalls. =/

So if you play enough- the game is no longer hard. I guess once you get far enough along.  I haven't been able to play it regularly which is probably good as it draws it out more...  my favorite steed is the GIANT horse that I'm calling Onyx-  I love mowing over monsters and animals with him, he can run over anything!

I hate Zelda's voice though... WAY too old for her.

My daughter got it with her gift card two days ago. She's enjoying herself. Horrifying important people by running around in Link's skivvies, hunting and catching horsies.

I think it's so-so, I got off that boring plateau yesterday, grabbed two horses and have been exploring the areas between Kakariko and Hateno.

I don't like the stamina meter as I predicted I wouldn't. Stupid, stupid Aunoma. The weapons durability suuuucks soooo baaad, I hope this will never be implemented again. The music is almost non-existent and the shrines can't even be called mini dungeons.

The only things I like so far is getting horses and how the world around me feels truly alive.

This could have been a true successor to the NES Zeldas if they had given it proper dungeons and not made so many stupid decisions by bringing back a rightfully maligned mechanic from a hated game and not have everything break.

It'll never be my favorite Zelda, but I'll play it now and then.

Certainly wasn't worth 60 bucks and  I refuse to let her make it an $80 game just because nintendo decided to start selling it in pieces like other companies.

It's funny because even though the weapon durability is the kind of feature I'd usually despise, I wasn't really bothered by it until later in the game, when you start having to face enemies that can break your shield in one hit.

I agree that the OST could have been more full. I was always disappointed with this. However, there are a number of songs in the game that I love. All in all, I feel like they took the same path as Skyward Sword of ambience over memorable tunes with some exceptions. I disliked it in SS just as much as I do here.

Now, now. You are free to have your opinion over the game, but as far as DLC goes, I'd say this is a far cry from selling a game in pieces. Base game Breath of the Wild is a complete game, through and through. BoTW's DLC is the definition of extra content added onto a complete game after release. It's so much in the extra content category that I haven't even thought of buying it. It isn't necessary. I'm sure it adds stuff that is neat for some people, but it is not in any way selling the game in pieces.

Reporting back in-  I don't have a ton of time to play, but play I have- I finally got the add-on pack thingie- and really like it. There are new quests, and the "hero mode" (that shows you everywhere you've been in the last 200 hours) is REALLY helpful -  I've been going to the places in the world that I missed and finding all sorts of things...

I've been trying to do ALL of the side quests before freeing the last divine beast, so that I can make the game last as long as possible...
