I don't remember who posted about it before or if I have the details right, but G1 hair was made in an Italian factory that burned to the ground. So what is now sold as "original" G1 hair is close but not exact. Again, I don't remember exactly, so do with that info what you will.

Really? So all the doll hair suppliers are lying? :P
In all seriousness, I had no idea! So there could be a slight difference - maybe the original hair was slightly thinner? Of course the hair we can get these days is great, but it'd be interesting to know.  ^.^

No, and that's not what I said. When the current suppliers say that they're ordering from Hasbro's supplier, they're speaking about the company that currently supplies Hasbro, not the company that supplied them in the 1980s and 1990s.

Oh, I was just joking (hence the  :P smiley), sorry if that wasn't clear!

Glad to see other people noticing the same thing - so I'm NOT crazy for thinking there's a difference (and even between different colors of hair sold right now - really interesting!)

New nylon hair needs to be washed and conditioned to get rid of the manufacturing oils. Boil perming shouldn't take long at all. Just remember to let it dry completely before you take the curls out. I usually let it sit for at least 24 hours.

Original pony hair was curled in a certain way and I don't know if anyone knows the exact process. It has held up for 40 years. Even after washing it, the curl comes back. I think it might be more the way it was styled rather than the nylon itself?

I totally forgot to wash and condition the hair on the pony I've been working on! Thank you for reminding me before I actually finished her hair.

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they did something to the nylon to help it keep its shape. Boil perming is pretty crude compared to the all the complex stuff a toy factory does.

I've been back at restoring some ponies, and one thing I've noticed is that original pony hair seems... springier and more lightweight than new nylon hair. The original manes curl up naturally without losing its shape but my restored ponies don't seem to have that.

Is this a known thing or am I just crazy? Do I just need to make sure I REALLY boil-perm the slight curl into the manes?

If you don't already have a match for the original Daiquiri Ice, getting one would be fantastic!

One of my favorite ponies! I have two - both need rehairs but I want to make one an alternate rehair.

Customs / Planning customs?
« on: November 06, 2022, 07:11:37 PM »
I see a lot of people talk about the customization process, but not much about the planning. How do you all go about it? Do you use lineart/bases? Keep it in your head? Do you wing it? Do you work on one at a time or do you have several concepts to choose from? Where do you get inspiration from? I'm curious to hear how everyone does it!

I've constantly wondered this since Daquiri Ice changed (which is a choice that continues to baffle me ). I know RetroDollsUS had some in stock at one point but then it closed before I ordered any.

Is RetroDollsUS still going? Her Etsy says she's taking a break but it was last updated in February so I'm curious if she decided to shut down.

Mine has all 4 hooves stamped (HK) and symbols about the same color as her hair. I'm pretty sure she's the common Show Stable version, nothing fancy.

Pony Corral / Lemon Drop's forelock length?
« on: June 25, 2021, 12:22:41 AM »
Could anyone tell me quick how long Lemon Drop's forelock is? Is it the same length as the rest of her mane or is it a little shorter? And if so about how many plugs does it take up? Unfortunately I don't have a minty Lemon Drop to compare to my rehair  :P
