Title: n00b question about clay
Post by: Luxrayx on February 24, 2018, 04:32:36 AM
I'm making my first (G4) custom, and I'm going to make the hair out of oven-bake clay. The packaging says to bake at 110 C for 30 minutes - is it okay to bake the pony at that temperature, or will she melt? Sorry, I'd rather ask a stupid question than make a stupid mistake

Clay is used to fix body parts on ponies--here's a place to start: http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/body.html (http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/body.html)

I've never worked with a G4, but I've put G1 and G3 ponies in a 275 F oven for 15 minutes with no issues. Just keep your eye on it, and don't put the pony on metal.

Oh, and despite what you might read about polymer clay, it can be baked multiple times. So if you're really worried, you can pull the pony out, wait for it to cool off and then bake it again.

Although I've never tried baking a pony, when polymer clay was my go-to for sculpting, I would bake at the lowest temperature my oven would allow, for a longer period of time. It takes more patience and you might need to watch it for longer, but that helps prevent cracking, and I imagine would be better for the pony as well. It might be good to do a test pony you're not attached to, watch it super close, and from there determine if you're comfortable going this route.

If you end up feeling too nervous about putting something like that in the oven, there's also the option of an epoxy clay such as "Magic Sculpt." It's about the same price range as Sculpey, a little more sturdy, and you can skip the oven all together.

G4s can get wobbly after being in the oven, but I have never burned or melted one, despite my tendency to forget I have them in the oven. The worst damage I have seen is their legs being a bit further appear than before after becoming more wobbly, spreading a little under the weight of the body, and then cooling in that position.
