Title: Tell me about Sailor Moon
Post by: Ponyfan on August 22, 2016, 06:33:30 AM
Hi. I saw several Sailor Moon DVDs at Walmart. I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy a DVD set of Sailor Moon?  I think I watched part of the episode back in the 90s and it was kind of weird? Maybe I just saw a bad episode though.  Which series is the original Sailor Moon? I saw a DVD of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R and Sailor Moon Crystal.  I think Crystal is a reboot of the original Sailor Moon?  I know Sailor Moon seems pretty popular.

Why not watch a few episodes on crunchyroll and see if you like it? http://www.crunchyroll.com/sailor-moon-crystal

Crystal is the reboot, yes.  It follows the manga closely and there is no filler.

I personally loved it but there are others that do not--its personal preference.

Yes, Crystal is the reboot - kissanime has all episodes of all series (originals and dubs), if I remember correctly, so you can always stream a few random episodes free first if you aren't sure whether you'd want to buy a set.

The Sailor Moon DVDs that are at Walmart now are using a newer voice cast and translation, so if you watched it on TV back in the nineties, there will be some differences, most notably the names.  For example Sailor Moon in the 90s had the name Serena and in this dub it is Usagi.  Her friend (formerly known as Molly) no longer has a Brooklyn accent (I think that's what it was supposed to be).  They're supposed to be releasing ALL the episodes eventually, uncut, (even the Sailor Stars season that was never released in America before) so there will be some things that you don't expect, like the episode with the baby that shows that the baby is a boy.

Haven't watched any of Crystal yet, so I'm not any help there.

That's interesting! So the new releases are more true to the original series, then? I had no idea!

I don't mind the new voice cast or the name revisions back to the original names. What kills me about these new versions is the vastly inferior soundtrack. I bought the first set of episodes and was ready to dive in, but once I got started something was bugging me and it took me several episodes to figure out what that was. Now to be fair I was / am a huge fan of the dub that was made in the 90s so to me this was very noticeable and unappealing. But depending on your background it could effect you or it might not phase you at all.

Thanks everyone. I didn't know about the Cruncyhyroll website  or realize the DVDs at Walmart are a new voice cast and translation.

It's been a long time since I watched SM, and I watched it in Japanese, so I never saw the American version. (Still amused that her name means rabbit, rabbits in the moon...and all that...)

I have heard some good things about the new, though, from someone I know who is very into Sailor Moon. I echo the advice to look it up on crunchyroll etc and see...its a really good way to decide what DVDs you want to buy ;)

Thanks Taffeta. Since a couple of people have mentioned Crunchyroll. is it a safe site to watch videos on like YouTube only it's anime stuff? When I was looking for Sailor Moon I saw a movie I wanted to watch.

It's a safe site... As an alternative you can also stream from viz.com  (which is the company that puts out the DVDs). I remember getting up at 6am to watch Sailor Moon... I feel like we are all spoiled today with streaming. I always hated the monster a day format, but I really enjoyed watching the characters grow.

I personally liked the 90s anime, the manga, and Sailor Moon Crystal :D All of them tell the story a little bit differently, but I enjoyed every version.

The 90s anime has tons of filler episodes and even a whole filler arc in season 2, so be warned. The quality of the animation also varies wildly. It's still a good classic :)

Althought it's not animated, if you ever get the chance to watch the live action Sailor Moon series, I really recommend it.
It is cheezy at times, but it's fun to watch and I give them props for how they handled some of the characters, and exclusive storylines.  :D

I love sailor moon, grew up watching it and absolutely being obsessed with it, but I found now I can't STAND the 90's dub, the voice actors.... especially Serena/Usagi's just has a voice that grates on my ears, and I think it was after the voice actor switch for her that really got noticeable about it. Crystal currently is only Subbed as far as i know-haven't checked the dvds-.   Will agree though , that the 90's dub had a better background selection instead of the anti-climatic bgm of the japanese where everything is literally made to be a lower stress level.

Also: Beware of CrunchyRoll right now it will simply give you ads after ads and will force you to disable any adblocker you may use and demand that you pay a fee to watch. I was trying to catch up on Crystal the other day and it gave me nothing but problems.

I started watching the original series in English (the dub).  Then I restarted with the original Japanese voices, and subtitles.  I like the Japanese voice cast much better.

I think the entire series is on WatchCartoonOnline.com , which I've never had any issues with.  And unlike some sites it doesn't object to the fact that I have AdBlock turned on.

I haven't seen Crystal  yet. I have heard mixed things about it. I did watch all of the 90's and loved it....really nostalgic for me. One of the first animes that I watched. I have it all in Japanese. I have the original releases by Geneon and ADV. I bought the first season by Viz to try to get my mom to watch it with me and she says it's too childish. She really only likes the more mature animes.

This sooo much! I LOVED the original US soundtrack, and I liked that the names weren't in Japanese, it made it feel more relevant for me as a child. I miss the names, but I'm getting used to them. The biggest thing for me was that soundtrack, especially the intros and transformations. When they did the first transformation in the new dub, I was so disappointed. It just wasn't as epic with the Japanese music. It is much more magical girl (which I guess it was supposed to be) than superhero which is a more western idea I guess. I mean that DiC Jupiter's theme... my absolute favourite music of any of the music from any sailor moon dub or incarnation so far. Awesome...

Crystal I'm pretty sure has started to release in English... I saw the first Crystal DVD in Sanity yesterday, when I was checking what they were up to, as I have been away for a while, and before that was pretty financially preoccupied, so hadn't been paying attention. I didn't look at it in detail, so maybe it was a sub DVD, but I highly doubt it - Madman usually does anime DVD's with either English or Both Japanese and English languages and subs available, and they can't publish until VIZ already has.

I've watched several episodes of the 90's anime now. I like some of them but not others. I'm not sure yet if I will buy another season. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts o Jadeite and Nephrite.

I have both.  Crystal is an interesting version.  It's the same basic story without a lot of the extra fluff episodes (and some new information that totally makes you go :dropjaw:).  By the end of the first season Chibi-Usa has already shown up, but she doesn't show up until the end of the second season in the original series.  I just bought the second season of Crystal but haven't watched it yet.

Honestly, I like both but that might be because I grew up with the original and I'm one of those people that can separate the old and new versions of things and consider them as their own entities.

I got lucky and found all the DVD seasons of original Sailormoon at a thrift store recently this year!  I already have season one so I left it for some lucky person.  Yes they are fansubbed bootlegs but buying them secondhand is about as non gray-market as you can get.  :)

I have never seen StarS outside of really bad VHS onto web upload in the Zero's quality so this has been enjoyable!

Congrats lovesbabysqurimy.:)

I watched the season one finale earlier and

Spoiler
I was surprised at how emotional it was. I never cry during sad movies or TV shows but I cried when the ghosts of the Sailor Guardians came to Usagi /Serena when she was crying and told  her not to give up and they'd always be with her.

Ah, yes. Sailor Moon (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, in Japan) is a long favorite of mine. The version that was on TV here in the 90's was translated by DIC, and does not live up to the original by any means. The original manga and anime was intended for pre-puberty girls, who would grow up with the characters a bit and be a close age match to them. DIC dumbed it down for kindergarteners.

I haven't been able to check out Crystal yet; if it's really going to be closer to the manga, be forwarned that the manga got dark at times.

Thanks Kazzellin. I know I'm really late to Sailor Moon but I've heard that DIC cut out of lot of episodes and changed a lot of the scenes in their version that takes away from the original intent of Sailor Moon. I'm almost halfway through Sailor Moon R season and picked up the first DVD of Sailor Moon Crystal today.

I wasn't sure I'd like Crystal, because I loved the DiC dub (I know...  :throw:) and the remake of the classic anime, even with all it's filler. (I love filler, love it I tell you, and that goes for MLP and DB/Z/S too!! And while I'm getting fakies thrown at me for anime opinions, I love DB:GT and SSJ4, too!)
 :silly:

But I've been watching it online to see if I like it before going and buying the DVDs, and while there are things the classic anime just does better because of the build-up in relationships, and the fact that I love funny anime, I still loved it, so I'm going to get the DVDs (someday when I can afford them!). I do adore the manga though, so it makes sense, but I do feel a little of the manga's charm was lost in translation again, because cramming every issue into an episode isn't ever going to work perfectly.

Honestly don't feel bad about getting the fan release of the DiC dub, especially secondhand! The only official release in English I think was in Australia, and it's all hacked up, just like MLP was here. I had the Aussie DVD's, but bought the fan release to free up space (only 5 cases as opposed to dozens) and sold my official DVDs. No official revenue stream was lost, I still got the official ones, even if I didn't particularly like the format, but my DVD shelf is much tidier now. I'm also collecting the Limited Edition box sets of the remake, hopefully Madman don't lose the contract like they did with MLP, it would be annoying to have that disjointed look on my Sailor Moon shelf too!

I think everyone has already covered this, but I actually do recommend watching Crystal first if you've not seen the 90s anime. The original didn't age well compared to a lot of series (too much filler, weird choices of dubbing, even weirder choices of editing; the new DVDs fix the latter two things, but can't do anything about the filler) and can be really slow and difficult to watch as an adult. Even as a fan, I have a hard time getting through it, and prefer to just have it on as background noise now. Each season's "arc" picks up about mid-way, so you can really kind of skim the first half to get to the actual story. The biggest bonus of the seasons being so long is that you get to really know the characters better than in the manga or in Crystal. They have more room to flesh out their likes, dislikes, and quirks. But. That also means that their characters change slightly, and not always for the better (they make Raye/Rei into a really unpleasant character on several occasions, and Darien/Mamoru is kind of a misogynist's daydream for a lot of the show, whereas he was charmingly low-power in the manga).

I think the best seasons were the first season (Sailor Moon vs. the Dark Kingdom/Negaverse; establishing the lore and giving everybody their start), third season (Sailor Moon S, introduces the outer senshi and focuses on their roles), and final season (Stars, all kinds of wacky antics because the director for Utena took over and they'd nearly caught up to the manga; the Sailor Animamates are hilarious villains and the interactions between the main cast and the Starlights are charmingly goofy). I also have a soft spot for Nehellenia from the fourth season/SuperS, but there was some weird stuff going on in that one...

And honestly, you can entirely skip the Doom Tree arc. It had some nice moments, but the majority of that half-season made me really, really angry at the writers, even as a kid. hahaha

I watched the first episode of Crystal earlier and thought it was pretty good although it does feel like a shot for shot remake of the 90's anime episode.

There's definitely that feel for the first episode, because even the 90s one stuck pretty close to the manga on that episode. It's later on that things deviate.

Crystal has some serious quality control issues through the first seasons that weren't well-managed, but the third season really picked up its game and improved a lot! There are some plot issues I still have with it (the romantic chemistry between Usagi and Mamoru isn't great, and it's rushed compared to both the manga and 90s anime, as well as even the Live Action version from years ago. Some weird things they tried to fit into the plot to make it more unique from the other incarnations, too...), but overall it's an easier watch for a first-time viewer than the 90s anime which sometimes really suffers from its 90s roots.

I actually just finished the Doom Tree arc last week. I had to laugh at An's costume choices for Usagi and the others so she and Mamorou would shine when they doing Snow White. I'm somewhere in the black Moon arc on the 90's anime. I thought the episode with Chibiusa and the dinosaur was cute.

Welcome to the world of Sailor Moon! Big moonie  here... >.>

I love Crystal and the original. The DIC dub has a place in my heart from my childhood but it is so impossible to watch as an adult. XD

Look forward to your updates about your Sailor Moon journey. My favorite moon is Manga. ;p Coming up to my favorite part, the second half of R (Season 2).

Thanks Foxtale. I just picked up Sailor Moon Crystal volume 2 I didn't notice the DVD case was cracked until I was on the way and I wanted to check the DVDs to make sure they played okay. When I put the first disc in for a moment I thought my set was mixed up with a 90's anime set since it was so similar to the 90's anime episode where Chibiusa first appears.
