Title: How do you display your collection?!
Post by: emera_lazzaly on January 22, 2012, 03:29:49 PM
Hey everypony!

I've been cleaning up my old ponies and getting quite a few new ones and am trying to find the most efficient shelving to display them on. I don't want to spend too much money on a bookcase, but all of the bookcases I am finding only have 5 or 6 shelves. I've seen some collections displayed with two rows of ponies but I'm not sure what people are using to sit the second row of ponies on so they are being shown above the first row (if that makes any sense!!)

So I thought I'd ask you guys how you display your ponies! Feel free to post pictures of how you have them displayed and any recommendations you have! Thanks!! Looking forward to seeing your collections!

I have to store mine due to lack of space.

One day they will be out!

Mine are all on 3 shelves of a bookcase.  But I have a smallish collection.  My only picture is pretty old (about a year ago) and taken with my cell phone... and I've added about a dozen ponies since then.  But here it is!

I use paperback books to make the back row higher up than the front. Then I cover the books and shelf with fabric or an old pillowcase so you can't see the books- they get distracting. Old VHS tapes would give a more consistent height. Or boxes- books were just what I had.

Mine are in my window. I have wide window sills and a collection of only about 20 so it's perfect.

Most of mine are MIB G4's so they're all stacked up pretty efficiently in a big bookcase that was made for me when I was 12 or so. My loose ponies (only 7 of them?) are in various parts of my room perched on top of things.

Wherever they lay.

Not really, but it's almost like that. I have one large shelf just to ponies. Then ponies share two more shelves with books, and there are several in the living room too! XD

I have a couple things called "expand-a-shelf". They're a tad pricey ($12.99 at Ace Hardware), but they're nice 'n white, perfect size for ponies, and can expand to almost 24", so I use em for my favorites or where they're more visible, and pile up old VHS cassettes for others. :)

How many ponies do you have? How many do you plan on owning?

(I just mentioned these in another thread.) I've used a number of displays, and thus far my favorite is the ikea billy bookcases. Another collector highly recommended them, (Twinkler). Her collection looks just fantastic in them and she's pretty darn close to getting the entire US/Canada set.

I had one shelf set up at my old apartment. Held a large # of ponies. I like you can start with the basic bookcase, and "upgrade" later. (glass shelves, glass doors). So the expense doesn't have to be all at once. and, you can have nicer shelves later without buying an entirely new unit. (other display cabinets I was looking at/pricing came out to over triple the price of an upgraded billy, and you didn't have the option of buying extra shelves. -Price of a basic unit varies on finish chosen.)

Each shelf fits more then one row of ponies, but risers can be easily made. If you fit ponies tightly together and don't collect accessories a couple would do you for the entire US collection.

Mine are kind of runing out of room right now.  I'm going to buy a another bookcase once I make more room in my bedroom. Easier said then done.

G1's and g4's are on my closet shelf.  G3's have taken over almost a whole (small) bookcase that is stored in my closet. G2's are right next to my bed <3

I use paperbacks as risers and then organize by color. It's makes a nice rainbow effect.

My ponies are out on display for the first time now  :)  I just bought a second hand display cabinet to put them in (just did a brag post about it and some new ponies I got to put in it actually! If you'd like to see it, check it out  ;) ).

It's not to everyone's taste, but I wanted my ponies contained together... partly to be displayed proudly, partly to keep them protected (I have two young and very pony enthused girls!) and partly out of respect for my hubby too (I think he'd have a fit if ponies were spread throughout the house LOL).  The shelves were nice and deep, so I could fit two rows of ponies on each. We have been conveniently re-doing our deck, so I was able to raid decking off-cuts to create a little back shelf in order to see the back row of ponies. I was thrilled with out it turned out  :)

I think possibly however, the best part of any display, is actually making it! (which pony goes where... tidying her hair.... a little to the left... a little to the right.... THERE!)

Here are pics of my pony room
http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a243/ADeshotels/My%20new%20pony%20room%20November%2023%202010/ (http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a243/ADeshotels/My%20new%20pony%20room%20November%2023%202010/)

My G3 shelves are simply 1x6 boards mounted on shelf brackets. Very inexpensive. I made a back row by cutting pieces of stryofoam that I had.
Some of my G1s are stacked on shelf expanders bought at Walmart in the kitchen section. They have solid plastic ones that expand to fit the shelf and have 3 rows. They also have wire ones but they aren't as good. The ponies tend to fall down.
When I ran out of expanders I used the styrofoam again and whatever else I could find for risers as long as it doesn't damage the ponies. Some of my wall shelves are painted so I put paper under the ponies to protect them.

Please excuse the messy photos... These were just put up above my bed (top photo is above my head, bottom photo along the side of the bed). This is where I will be putting my ponies, but they were just up, so no ponies on shelves yet!

Used to keep mine on my dresser to greet me every morning when I woke up, but mom recently made me put them away. :( downsides of moving back home. Now they're in a Bud Light box I keep next to my bed. I can jussttttt see Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash through the handles.

I keep my blind bag girls on top of my jewelery box though. We'll see how long that lasts....

FantasticFirefly is right Ikea's Billy Bookcases!!! I have a whole room of them and they are stuffed with little ponies - the white bookcases look really good - I did have to save and get one bookcase at a time but they are not too break-the-bank expensive and most are big enough to take a substantial selection of a collection.

My collection is very small, so by the time I have all the ponies I want, they'll take up two shelves on a bookcase in my room.

I have them in a display cabinet with glass doors. The selves are pretty deep and i can 3 rows of ponies up. I have bought flat wood and my fiance cut it in the proper measurements of the cabinet. And i used drink glasses to raise them.
Here is a pic how it looks:

Unfortunately, I don't have a proper display set up in my room -- and I collect a bunch of toys besides Ponies, and not enough space for them all -- so some of them are in a box while the rest of them are sitting on my daybed (I got a big enough room to have both a bed and a daybed).

I'm hoping that when I move out, I'll have a room large enough to have lots of shelves to display all of my Ponies and other toys.

i havent had time to set them up at our new house, but at least they are out of those wretched boxes!  at the last house i had a combination of many kinds of shelving... my favorite was these decorative shelves that my dad had bought back when i was in elementary school.  They are for dishes or something, but the ponies have the perfect amount of room! just one row!  I also had 6in x 6ft shelves.  I just put a mib g3 behind the g1s. Those still in the box had a little bit of elevation so i could see both. I also had a shelf i made when i was little out of a shoe rack and some ply wood. (ok dad cut the wood!) that was barely tall enough to fit ponies in, but it worked and had enough room for adults in back babies in front.  I would suggest putting it on another shelf or desk because i couldnt see anyone but the babies when it was sitting on the floor.

sorry for the crappy pics! this is all i have ^__^

edit: gah it cut off the important parts of the pics... sorry just click ok?

I like the idea of risers. MoonStars that  expand-a-shelf looks perfect!
I only have g4s and use a nail polish stand for them (the idea from someone on the "old" arena. I can't remember who.) I like it a lot but they are expensive.
This is the newest pic I have of my collection. I've gotten more ponies and re-arranged things quite a bit since this was taken about a month ago.
I'm currently trying to come up with a display solution for my blind bag ponies. (They might end up stealing the polish rack and I might do something different w/ the brushables. I don't know, I'm constantly re-organizing  ^^; )

I like the white ones too, they also happen to be the least expensive "finish" which I also like -more $$ for ponies. :D (Twink's went with the birch finish, also looks lovely against the pastels). Even though the plan is to house most of the collection in billy's I'll also be one hunting for some older class china cabinets, and customizing them for a few of my pony lines/ponystuff. (I also love decorating/refinishing furniture).

I love some of the riser solutions people came up with. I have an idea, which my boyfriend claims will be easy enough to execute. we will see...

My display is a bit more elaborate but my shelves are fairly simple.  They're made out of bookshelves that were bought at thrift stores and cut apart.  They're painted white with metal brackets attaching them to the walls and PVC pipe in between for support.  I have a whole section about it on my website:

This page isn't finished and hasn't been published yet, but you can see some more photos here:

Seems I don't have any photos since I reorganized, but this gives the basic idea. I've got them stacked on all sorts of crap because I can't afford shelving and my boyfriend didn't want to help me make risers when he was here. Though I do have more ponies who aren't able to be displayed due to space issues.

I have th perfect thing to display ponies on that shows them all off very well and doesn't take up to much space!  I use wooden multi shelf CD shelves.  They only stick out about 4 inches from the wall and they hold lots of ponies!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Anyway, that is a picture of 2 of the CD shelves side by side and I also actually have the shelves sitting on my daughters dresser.  I have an other one that is taller sitting on the floor.  And I just bought another one for out computer room and I should be able to stack one more on top of it and it will just fit from floor to ceiling.  I have been buying this paticular one at Big Lots stores for $40.  But I'm sure you may be able to find other ones in other stores.  Let me know what you think.

These pictures are outdated, since I just have my LPS on the shelves and not my MLPs, but I thought I'd post them anyway to show the shelving that I use.  I bought some inexpensive pantry cabinets at Target (the small ones are around $25 each, I think?), and what I like best about them is that they have doors, which keep dust off my collection.

I've also started to use spice shelves to display ponies in my cabinets, since they create a nice tiered effect.  I have some wire shelving inserts as well, which are stackable and just the right height for ponies.  I'll try to get some updated pictures soon!

Risers are KEY!!
I cant stand having ponies being blocked, I must see thier faces and symbols :)
I use all kinds of things.... empty boxes, 2x4s, 4x4s (lumber), decks of cards, pieces of styrofoam...
and then usually i cover it up with a piece of material (sheet, table cloth etc)

relcelestia - I love how you grouped your ponies by color!  So pretty!

CadePony - The cabinets aren't actually super tall (the photos are a bit deceptive), so they might work in your room...the tallest one is 60 inches, and the littler ones are 31.5 inches.  The little ones are stackable, which is a nice feature.  I found the links for them in case you want more info: big cabinet (http://www.target.com/p/ClosetMaid-Pantry-Cabinet-White/-/A-12193628) / little cabinet (http://www.target.com/p/ClosetMaid-2-Door-Organizer-White/-/A-11187096?reco=Rec|pdp|11187096|ClickCP|item_page.adjacency&lnk=Rec|pdp|ClickCP|item_page.adjacency)

I LOVE all these pictures!

My collection is scattered throughout my house - MIBs on top of a unit in my front room, G4s sharing a cabinet with my skull collection also in my front room, some G3s and G2s on bookshelves going up the stairs (the rest are stored away :( ) few more G3.5s and G3s on the landing, then two Billy bookshelves full to bursting with G1s in my bedroom. I desperately need to re-organise and rotate but I just don't know where to start!
