Mass dumping of G4?
« on: August 30, 2019, 05:45:06 AM »
Hi friends!

I don't recall exactly how this was brought up but I think there was speculation of once G4 ends, people will start to donate more mlp, sell at garage sales or just dump the toys.

What do you think about this possibility? Because I feel both excited and sad.

G4's have been quite abundant at thrifts since their inception around here - you can find them left and right with online yard sales... Still much more common to find than other gens IMO. I do agree, there will be a mass exodus from most people's houses and back into the hands of longer term collectors.

that sounds about right... hey, maybe there'll even be some non-mane 6 ponies in there!

I think garage sale sell-offs will correlate more with the age of a child (i.e. have they grown out of their toys?  have they hit the tweens and now think MLP is for babies?) than the end of the show.

Like, if your kid is into G4 when the show ends, you can just buy one of those DVDs with three random episodes on it and they can keep watching.  Little kids have no problem with repetition.  When I was little I forced my parents to read the same counting book to me every night, sometimes multiple times a night.

And yeah, there are already tons of G4 ponies at thrift stores.  I mean, it ran for nine years.  If someone started watching the first season at age six, then today they would be fifteen.

I wish I had these thrift stores. When I see a G4 at the fleamarket people are quick to inform me it's a highly sought after collectible and they need at least 10€ for a common Twilight Sparkle XD

I did just see someone’s complete collection of mlp build a bears on Craigslist.  I think that a lot of the adults/teens who where really into FIM (not all but a lot) will lose interest, move on to other things.  But it might not be all at once.  It might happen over the course of a couple of years.   And to be honest, it’s likely going to be massive amounts of the mane6 with some fan favorites thrown in.  I don’t think we are going to be flooded with the harder to find g4 non-show ponies.

One of the thrift stores near me regularly has packs of 13 ponies for $13. (It's not really a great deal because they count McDonald's ponies and fakies as ponies.) Mostly G4 but also a lot of G3.

But anyway, being as they're 13-packs, I've seen literally hundreds of G4s go through that place. And have picked up a few of interest, like Snowcatcher and Plumsweet. ;)

Where I was in London there was a charity shop that always had G4 pony stuff. Seriously, every time I went. Not always stuff I wanted, but always something.

I also found a ton at the carboot sale down there.

I think it's like G1, toys kids grow out of show up second hand. Though now the internet is so prominent they'll probably come up on ebay a lot as well.

I'm waiting for the Holly Dash glut. There must be more out there in the UK wild. I have a couple of doubles already and now I'm home for a bit I hope to find them new homes, but I'm sure there must be more to be found.

I just saw some 2013-ish G4 at the thrift yesterday. I'd imagine most of the brushables will come as kids grow up, and any brony merch will be dumped soon, when G5 releases, when the fandom starts to loose lots of members, etc. Waves. These things come in waves.

I'm so jealous of y'all that regularly find ponies in the wild XD Can't remember the last time I found one in a charity shop.

Personally I'm wondering when the hardcore bronies will move on and start to purge their collections... you know, the ones that dropped like $500 on a custom plushie, those sort of things. It'll be interesting to see what the market (?) for those ends up being like.

I don't think there'll be a huge glut of G4s the second the show ends, though... I mean people don't generally lose interest in something that quickly, you know? I agree w/ others that it'll probably be more dependant on the kids' ages. Give them a bit of time to move onto something else, first.

This. Honestly, I don't think the end of the show will have much effect (if any). I'm not really sure many people watch the show anymore anyway :/

G4’s are so cheaply made and small, I see them either in bundles of thrift shop toys or tossed.  Most of my G4’s are in some dump somewhere.
