Title: What kind of doll collector are you?
Post by: Taxel on January 04, 2017, 10:38:28 PM
Do you prefer overflowing shelves that fill your home or a modest collection of special favorites? Certain species, colors, materials, types, or time periods? Handmade OOAKs or mass produced? Specific hair colors or outfits? Are you loyal to certain companies/artists or do you prefer a bit of everything? Has your collecting style changed over time? Tell me all about it!

I've never been picky about sticking to certain brands, companies, or even styles. My first love as a doll collector was Pullips but I dove into Jun Planning Ai dolls, Dollcena, Blythe, Susie Sad Eyes, and Pullip pretty much all at once when I first got into dolls. For years I never so much as looked at a modern playline doll. Liv was pretty much the beginning of the end for me and for years I focused on modern playline dolls. The best part? I don't even like Pullips at all anymore! I think they're extremely overpriced and not at all worth it even though I once dreamed of completing a 20+ Pullip wishlist. As you could probably guess from that wishlist, I'm not big on teeny tiny collections :P

This year I decided to stop with modern playline for the most part because of the rampant quality issues and degradation. I find it hard to pay for dolls that are falling apart before they leave the factory when so many dolls from the 50s and earlier are still in amazing collecting condition today. There are a few brands I still actively collect, like Cutie Pops and the retro re-release Strawberry Shortcakes, and I may pick up a few randoms here and there but in general I'd rather buy vintage or high quality modern dolls now.

Until last year it was all about articulation for me. I wanted the best articulation, the most poseability, the prettiest joints, the most potential. Cutie Pops in '12-13 warmed me up to the idea of looks over articulation but I was still drooling over those prototypes with elbow joints. I planned for last year to be the year of Monster High but fell head first into American Girl instead. You can't really get much less jointed than that! I don't know what it is but I just find myself so enchanted with them. I can't get enough!

As far as specifics go, I don't really care all that much. I prefer to limit blondes to as few as possible but that's about it. I'd be happy to add any doll I love to my collection no matter who he or she is, even if they're blonde! However I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some obvious preferences. Redheads totally have my heart because they were almost completely nonexistent when I was a child. The variety of beautiful, natural redheads (and some of crazy "obviously dyed" shades) is just amazing! One day I'd love to have a shelf just for ginger dolls of all kinds.

Like ponies, I collect dolls that have a nostalgic factor in my life.  :)

I was really into Barbie and Disney princess dolls when I was younger, so I have large collections of both of these.  Most of them are no longer on display, but I have a large box of 80s and 90s Barbies.  Plus, I have a bunch of the Disney store exclusive 12 inch dolls and some of the older Mattel Disney dolls.  I also have a couple of the Disney animator dolls, because I'm a big Frozen fan.  :)

When I was younger, I really wanted an AG doll, so now I have three.  Rebecca was my first and I sort of lavish attention on her.  I also have a secondhand JLM girl (April Grace) that I picked up from the thrift store.  And I just got Samantha, which is the doll I always wanted as a little girl.  I buy them clothes whenever I can afford it, and I always get super excited if I can find AG clothes secondhand.

I also collect Cabbage Patch Kids and vintage Strawberry Shortcake, which are both leftovers from childhood.  :)

Never got into Bratz, MH, Ever After High or anything else, so far.  I mainly stick with lines that existed during my childhood.

I got into dolls back in 2011 with Winx Club and Monster High. I didn't get too much into buying Winx as I only own a handful of dolls. I was REALLY into MH for a while but that eventually stopped when the reboot happened. Not to mention their quality had already been waning for a while. The very last MH dolls I bought were 2 characters from Great Scarrier Reef. I still love the MH dolls that I own but I'm pretty much 100% done with Monster High now.
I also love Novi Stars and own 11 dolls. I am really very lucky that I managed to get the rare ones I wanted. It is really too bad they were discontinued.

I also own a few other dolls from various different lines.

Currently I am into 90s-2000s Barbies, Bratz, and occasionally Project Mc2.

While I have favorite lines to buy, I don't hold any 'loyalty' to any brand or company. I just buy what I like but I also stick to playline only.
High-end collectors' stuff is a not an option for me.

I tend to focus only on my favorites from all lines.  So I have a little of everything.   :P

I'd say I mostly just collect whatever strikes my fancy at the time, but I'm mainly into anime styled dolls exclusively. Or ones that people would pass off as looking "too anime" for them even if they technically aren't lol. I also accidentally have a thing for dolls with blue eyes. Most of my dolls have them. Mainly because blue is my favorite color. I tend to put blue on everything...

I also only collect modern toys and dolls. Nostalgia has never really been a driving force for why I get anything. But I will agree that modern playline doll quality hasn't been the best lately, so I've been sticking to my vinyl BJDs in the past year. Since they're much more expensive, I prefer quality over quantity these days. I don't strive to have a wall of dolls or anything. I feel like I'd get overwhelmed with that many to maintain. Just a few is good with me. Or if I do get a lot, I want them to be over larger amounts of time.

I'm not a huge doll collector but I do collect some Barbies, Sailor Moon and Disney dolls :)

I had a phase when I first atarted collecting dolls that I got a lot of different kinds. In 2 years I got Pullip & family, MH and BJD's. But it overwhelmed me, I guess. Because I had so much there was nothing I could focus on and I got burned out. So after a few years I tossed my MH's and sold 2 of my BJD's and now I'm focussing on Pullip only. It made me a lot calmer and allowed me to enjoy my dolls a lot more.

Doesn't mean I don't appreciate other dolls: I love seeing those Disney animator dolls and I love photos of gorgeous BJD's, but I can appreciate them from a distance and don't need to own them anymore :)

I don't really collect dolls any more. I love my EAH collection, but because of the declining quality in the new ones being released, I don't buy them now. Other doll lines haven't really appealed to me in the same way as EAH did, but I'm on the look out for one I might like. I mainly just collect ponies

I wasn't much of a doll kid when I was little, until I started reading the AG books and pouring over old catalogs in our school library. When I was 9, I got Samantha. I loved changing her into different outfits from her stories and her accessories were to die for. I believe I have almost a complete collection of her except for the newest stuff. I stopped displaying her as I got older but still loved AG. I don't actively collect AG anymore but I did get Nellie, Felicity, Elizabeth, and Kirsten before they retired them. Now I am waiting until I have the space to display them.

AG was really the only fashion dolls I liked as a kid. I have some Barbies but didn't like playing with them much. I hated changing their clothes and how messy their hair got. I have picked up a couple Barbie things that I remembered seeing commercials for second hand like the Barbie Icecream Shop. I liked her accessories like a kitchen with sounds and a date set with wine bottle and ice bucket.  I always loved baby dolls and would love to get some of those that I had or wanted as a kid so nostalgia is a big driver for me. I collect Cherry Merry Muffin and Cupcake dolls because of this.

However, I did not consider myself a doll collector until MH. I started collecting in 2012 and have way over 100 dolls. I never thought it'd escalate that much but I just loved the monster themes, the clothes and the face-ups. I only collect those that I like. The reboot kinda is killing my attention so I have slowed down big time in buying MH but I really want the fashion packs. Trading out clothes is my favorite part of MH. I also collect EAH, Disney Descendants, and Disney Store dolls for fairytale "families" toa much smaller extent.

Originally, I was only supposed to be collecting dolls that I had as a child. After my mom passed in March, I went through a really bad depression. I started thinking about my childhood and how much I loved some of my dolls so I started hitting ebay and buying some. Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Barbie.. that sort of thing. However, it since kind of turned to buying other play line dolls. I wasn't going to go down the Monster High rabbit hole, because I've been there before back in 2012-2014 and ended up selling due to a financial crisis in 2015. However, I couldn't resist some of those.

Mainly, I stick to play lines. I adore some of those BJDs I see other people have but I don't want to shell more than 30-40 dolls out for any doll. I am cheap. I like good deals. Unless it is a Project MC2 doll, I almost never pay full price. But I love these girls. They are my favorite line.

Right now, I guess you can say my main collection is Project MC2, Bratz, and Barbie. There are some others but the biggest three are those. I like the fashionistas for Barbie. Especially the diverse body type ones. Bratz are my guilty pleasure. I can't help myself when I see a nice one for a few dollars on ebay. I'll buy her and add to my collection. I am different about my Bratz then any other doll. They don't have to be complete with original clothes. If the doll is pretty and I like whatever outfit the owner put her in, she comes home with me and hangs out with my small (getting larger ) group of bratz. I like the boys too because I can pose them together.

Now Project MC2 has to be complete. I don't really care about the projects/accessories but they have to have their clothes and be in pristine condition. These are my favorites. I hold them to a higher standard. They ALWAYS come out of the box. Some of my barbies, if they aren't fashionistas or newer ones, stay in the box. I love 90's barbies. But I don't debox. They stay in their pretty pink boxes for display only. Monster High's also come out. But I only have about 4 of those and I don't buy as often.

I collect random Disney dolls too. But I don't care for the Hasbro ones. Their heads are just.. odd.. lol.

Anyway, that's the kind of collector I am. Sorta all over the place.

I buy what I like but then I usually end up regretting it. One day I'd like to be able to have a dollhouse for both AG and Barbie...

I feel this. A lot of times I get buyers remorse after I buy a new doll or go on an ebay spree. It's like, I have to have them, but once they are on their way, I've already moved on to the next thing and don't really want the thing coming in the mail.

It is so frustrating!  One buys a toy to make them happy, that's the idea right?  Somehow "being happy because I own this toy now" never equally translates into "and I feel TOTALLY comfy about what I did to the credit card!"  I feel so much guilt and anger and frustration surrounding the stupid VISA when my husband and I look at the bill and this SCARY scary number, and all we have to show for it is well-fed bellies and SO MUCH PLASTIC CRAP Made in China.    And you can't recoup your costs on "collectible" plastic junk - I had to almost GIVE away my MH dolls when I sold them!  Despite all the purging on my collection, I still know that I paid far more for this stuff (secondhand even) than I ever have gotten back when I sell it on Kijiji.

Yeah I'm working on paying my credit cards down right now. They aren't too terrible. Christmas really put us over though. But I still can't stop buying. I buy a couple things from ebay a week it seems. And sometimes in stores as well. I'm trying to cut back since we're trying to have a baby but I know that's not going to change anything lol. We're not like broke or anything and my bf doesn't mind that I'm spending. I'm disabled so I gotta have something to do when I'm home, and collecting has helped. But I still get anxiety once I get something and I'm like "Did I really need that?!" but.. the cycle continues. As long as the dolls don't start taking over my house I should be good!

I focus first and foremost on 1:4 scale dolls.  My dolls are a "family" with detailed and interconnected stories; and I usually choose new dolls based on a role or relationship that needs to be filled.  As such, my core collection is relatively small (ten dolls in total, at the moment).

I've also become mildly obsessed with Hujoo lately. :biggrin:  I've bought up three Hujoo dolls in the last month and a half, and I'm already planning on getting another. ^^;

I had a HUGE hoard of barbies as a child--we had bins of them overrunning the basement. We ended up getting rid of most of them, but kept our kelly dolls since we played with them most. Around the same time, we had the original bratz--yasmin is my favorite. I have at least six or more of her in her own suitcase with her face on it. :P We held onto most of ours, since we didnt have that many.

I wasn't really interested in dolls for a long time after that. I was always more of a "figurine" collector. Around a year ago, I was deep in the most expensive and obsessive days of my pony binge and I started "rescuing" monster high dolls at the thrift stores I hunted for ponies at. Aaaand about 70 dolls later.....

Now, I'm trying to cut back a bit, but it's difficult. Most recently, I picked up a 1992 troll barbie, one of the fashionista barbies, and my mom gave me a scientist barbie for christmas (since i have a degree in biology and she's slowly accepting i like spending money on toys a little too much). For my birthday, my sister bought me a pureneemo S doll body and an obitsu 21 mm head. I bought her a Shibajuku girls fashion pack yesterday. :P

I also picked up a pinkie cooper, of all things, today. New in box. At a walmart. In the clearance aisle. I swear, I have the weirdest luck with finding old dolls in walmarts.

I dunno, I just "adopt" any that look cute to me. I even found a vintage Sailor Chibi moon doll that I ended up taking home. My poor room is bursting at the seams with colorful plastic women.

I'm in an impulsive doll buyer. I don't need to be and end up selling most of my buys. I'm really thinking an selling all the dolls I own and starting over. So I can be selective with what comes into my collection. But there are several dolls that I couldn't part with.

I really just need to start putting that money that I am thinking about spending into a dolly fund. So when I want a more expensive doll I can buy it.

I have to tell myself over and over when I see a line I don't have that I think is cute "I don't need it.. I don't collect it" but in the back of my mind I'm thinking "Ooooo pretty! need! need! need!" it's bad. So bad. But right now I'm doing good at sticking to my main collections. I need to put some stuff away that is taking up room but I can't find myself to part with.  >_<

My see-pony diet (buying any pony I see) has spilled over into some dolls...beginning mostly with dolls that can sit on ponies.  I'm a sucker for dolls with handmade full skirt outfits too...I only buy cheap though and never for resale....that's disappointment waiting to happen.  I only buy something if I want it for myself or maybe as a gift and, um, try to never use credit for such things but...I did run up what little credit I had on ponies last year so...it can happen.

I mostly collect second hand 90's Barbie, clothing or accessories that I have find when I'm out thrifting for ponies. A lot of my dolls are from when I was kid. My collection is mostly a mix of Disney, sailor moon, monster high dolls and 1 ever after high doll. They all live in my doll house that my dad built for me as a kid so they are mostly grouped together unless there getting cleaned up or id. Some times I feel bad if I do a big toy shop all at once so I try to do once and a while. It also helps to have family and friends that like looking for doll or ponies I don't have when they are out and about because they love adding to my collection.

Most of my dolls I had maybe one in the line as a kid and now want to get what I had along with others. Some of the collections are more intense than others.

I'm not really sure where to draw the line on what's considered a doll with some of them but my most time consuming and expensive set is Magic Attic (Club) dolls. I have one evading me right now (surprisingly not the rare one of the bunch lol) and a double of another. But I'm definitely going to be somewhat of a completionist on these ones as far as getting all the clothes and accessories past starting in 1995. The test run stuff from 1994 before I got my first doesn't really appeal to me. There's also a few different versions of some of the dolls but I really only want the molds/set of 6 that I had started as a kid.

I like beautiful art dolls, (like Marmite Sue's bjd art dolls) fashion dolls with gorgeous faces and outfits (like fashion royalty dolls or Kingdom Doll), vintage dolls that make me smile...(Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake) and everyhing in between.

My displays are mostly mixed

I fight constantly to keep my doll collection under control.

I have tried to thin my collection of vintage 1980s dolls to only the ones that are REALLY special to me (vintage Brazil and Peru dolls, and prototypes and a few favorites) But I still have a few entire collections of dolls that are packed up and will never see the light of day because I don't have enough space to display them (and they are not my current favorites) and yet their value is so low that it really isn't worth selling them (ie Star Fairies)

I am attracted to current play line dolls too- but that is a dangerous area. I love my Novi Stars- and a few Monster High dolls, but at some point I let 4 MH dolls become 100- and was overwhelmed.  I ended up giving most of them away because it just wasn't worth the hassle of selling them (photos/listing/packing) all to get pennies on the dollar.  I have been TRYING not to buy the new vintage looking Strawberry Shortcake dolls, but couldn't resist getting just a few...

Also caved and got the newish 11" Shera.. she is just TOO cool.  If they release more 11" MOTU dolls, I will definitely get those as well...

I consider myself an aesthetic collector, though most of the dolls I end up collecting do have joints. I used to be really into pullips in my teen years, but Taxel, I fell out of love with them since it felt like the only pullips that were coming out had the same faceup, the same outfits, or were like the millionith anime collab/Alice in Wonderland. (Admittedly I love AIW themed stuff but I got SO BORED). I'll keep the ones I have on a shelf but I don't really play with them, they're basically just for decoration at this point.

I also had monster high, but I reached a point where I was like, "okay, I have enough MH, it's not a lot but I feel secure in my collection and I don't really want more". so now Monster High is like pullip, I'm happy with what I have but I don't feel particularly compelled to go out and buy more. I also collect Little Apple Dolls, as in I have them, I love what I have, but I don't feel compelled to buy more.

Ponies I still somewhat actively collect, because I haven't quite gotten all my pony 'grails' yet.

I'm not at the point where I'm like, "I have enough bjd" yet. LOL. And they're the most expensive too.... I recently got a unoa Sist, I love her!!!! I think next I want to get Venitu or Saint.

I was never really a Barbie fan when I was growing up in the 80's, but I did have a Spectra doll- anyone remember Spectra? She was made of shiny metallic pink plastic with a vinyl head and was very highly articulated. She was so much cooler than Barbie. I still have her! Around 2005-2006 I started getting interested in BJD but was content to just look at other people's pictures. In 2007 I bought my first BJD and it's been a wild ride since then! BJD collecting opened me up to collecting some Blythe dolls & Pullips. I also collect vinyl Dollfie Dreams. I prefer dolls that are stylized or have an anime aesthetic, so I have several Volks BJD as well as Dollfie Dreams. I have some Marmite Sue Angel Egg dolls as well. Most of my BJD collection is resin, but I have 2 porcelain BJD- my first was a Forgotten Hearts girl, one of the very early sculpts. My other porcelain BJD is a Marmite Sue doll, made from Moonglass which is a type of luminous, shatter resistant porcelain the artist invented with the help of her father. This doll is my Ultimate Grail Doll! I saved up & spent a lot of $$ for her then waited almost 2 years for her to be completed. She is much more than a doll to me and is worth every cent & every minute waiting :)

I am more into ponies than dolls, so my doll collection is quite tiny as compared to the ponies. So I guess.....a modest collection.

Like, I collect Lady Lovely Locks, but I don't want every doll from that line. Just the ones I like.

I'm a very sporatic doll collector. I have about 80 Monster Highs (I got swept up in that craze) and a few Disney dolls. But until recently, I haven't really gone out of my way to get dolls. As a kid, I was way more interested in toy animals than mini people. Although, I did have a few - My favorite is a Baby So Beautiful I got for my third birthday. Her name is Michiko and she's like my little sister, haha. I also had a Jenny doll and a generic little boy doll that went with Jenny, but that was pretty much it.

Right now, I'm lowkey into porcelain/toddler dolls. I recently went to an antique store and found a toddler boy named Lantau from a company called Dolls by Pauline, and that was love as first sight. He was the most I've ever spent on a doll! So I feel like I've crossed a threshold...

I'm a very sporatic doll collector. I have about 80 Monster Highs (I got swept up in that craze) and a few Disney dolls. But until recently, I haven't really gone out of my way to get dolls. I'd love to see pics of him!

He's on the right, next to my childhood girl. I just think he has the most precious face! I didn't realize how stylized my childhood doll is until I put them next to each other.

Since I don't have money and space for a large doll collection I only pick my very favourites. I'm a "weird doll" collector, and I like non-human dolls and creatures with brushable hair (like Monster High, Novi Stars or The Zelfs). I tend to gravitate towards blue/purple/green, but there's quite an amount of pink there, too. In general, as long as the colors look nice, I'm not picky about them. OOAKs are great, but as I said, I can't afford customs, so I go for mass-produced (although sometimes I try to make customs for myself). As long as the product looks good, I don't care for the company. I like articulation but it's not a necessary requirement for me (my favourite Novi is Una Verse and she only haves shoulder joints ), but i don't like articulation to be taken away from me (looking at you Monster High!)

I was never into collecting dolls as a kid.  People would occasionally buy me barbies but they just sat in the the box.  I fell in love with Monster High Dolls when they first came out.  I was actively collecting but at some point I was overwhelmed with all of the releases and I stopped buying any.  I realized when I didn't miss buying the new ones that I was over collecting new in box dolls.

I like odd dolls but I don't go out of my way to actively collect anymore.  I was hoping Pinkie Cooper would have done better but no new dolls means no spending(so its good).  I'll pick up a Novi Star if I find any, second hand.  I have a really sweet bull terrier doll from some strange doll line, I'd collect them if I could every remember the name of the line.

Pinkie Cooper is adorable but I'm sad it didn't really work out. I can't collect dolls NIB myself. It just doesn't have the appeal. I'm really trying to slow down my collecting right now. So I'll probably just focus on buying clothes from now on.

Maybe someone here will be able to ID the bull terrier so you can collect them?

I'm a bit different from a lot of other people in this thread in that my interest was chiefly in human and human-shaped dolls. I really will take home anything that strikes my fancy and fits into my budget, but I started out with Pullips and currently have a not-insignificant number of Blythes, BeGoths, and Monster High dolls.

Honestly, though, I think 2016 was an awful year for my doll hobby. The Monster High reboot happened and just...completely killed everything I found interesting about the line. Makies announced that it was moving to America and then promptly dropped off the face of the Earth. Pullips haven't interested me in years. The quality of Blythes has recently been dropping while the prices have inflated, and CWC has made it very clear over time that they care very little for their Western base, which makes me reluctant to buy from them. I suppose there are always customs, but these are usually way too far outside what I'm able to spend. Tonner recently killed all of its lines that were even slightly affordable and seems to be moving into overly-expensive resin with Phyn & Aero. It's all really put a damper on my collecting.

It may be a blessing in disguise, to be honest. Part of the appeal of G1 ponies to me is that they're already vintage items, so the line can't exactly be "killed" the way currently-running ones can, and because they were intended to be children's playthings in the first place, I feel like I can handle them without forgetting to breathe. It also helps that they're reasonably small, which is definitely a plus since I don't have all that much room left.

Also, because ponies are generally a lot less expensive than most of the other things I mentioned, I can get my "hit" a lot more often LOL

I used to love collecting dolls but several things happened that caused my interest to drop. I even sold most of my collection recently, keeping about maybe ten dolls, in and out of box? I kept Ghoulebrities in Londoom and the MH Scary Tales girls because it took me forever to get them and I still love them. I also kept a few assorted EAH dolls. Part with my Cerises? Not gonna happen.

To be honest, I'd still buy EAH if they released decent dolls. I so badly want a Ramona but all we get is crappy budget dolls...

I also want a Bratz Meygan (my favourite from when I was a kid) or the Winter Ball Beauty Cloe but it doesn't look like that'll happen any time soon.  So it seems like my doll collecting is on hold for the time being.

It's a mix for me. I actually started with smaller dolls like SSC. Those I was fine with if their articulation wasn't much since they were small. In the meanwhile I often drooled over BJDS tho they were way out of my price range. Then MH came along and I fell into the world of fashion doll scale dolls. I joined some doll boards and learned about making hybrids which helped me find new appreciation for Liv and Moxie Teenz. My most ambitious hybrid to date is an 18in BFC Ink and Beauty Cuties hybrid. I haven't really been doing as much custom work lately and been mostly closing gaps in my want list.

Just a couple years ago I started collecting monster high dolls. It started with one catching my eye and I said I was just going to put her with my pony collection. Well that didn't last long and I started collecting the different sets of them and I've got a huge collection now but I stopped collecting after awhile. The new releases of the same dolls over and over just got old. Now I check the doll section when I'm out shopping and will pick up a new character if one has been released.

I used to collect collector Barbies MIB when I was a late teen to early twenties so I have about 50 of these in storage that I don't really want any more. Some of my favorites I've displayed in my daughter's room and we kinda shared them. I let her unbox a few too and play with them. I'm torn on whether to keep them in case I get back into them at some point or sell them.

I mostly collect 80's toys so my doll collection is focused on Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, Moon Dreamers, Lady Lovely Locks etc. These are what I've been actively collecting in the last 2 years to work towards completing my collections. I also has a large Monster High collection and a good amount of Ever After High. I still love my dolls but the reboot killed it for me so I haven't bought a new MH or EAH in a long time. I recently caved in and bought some Star Darlings. They are so pretty I couldn't resist and I think they temporarily filled that need to buy something in the store since MH sucks right now. I really hope SD continues a little longer, I'd love more characters but I haven't been able to find much release info on them.

All in all my doll collecting has slowed down a ton. I don't have a place to display them until we are done developing the basement. Hopefully by the end of the year it will be done and I can finally unpack 15 years worth of collecting and enjoy my dollies and toys. I will also be able to assess my collection finally and decide where to go from there. Most of my collecting lately has been thrift store finds or deal hunting on ebay. Luckily I have a home business that supports my collections so I haven't ever had to use credit cards, I can see how that would zap the joy out of it for some of you. I also don't collect for resale value, I think that would be disappointing when it came time to sell. I collect what makes me happy. Smaller lines I'm more completionist and the larger ones I only buy my favorites.[

MH doesn't suck. The reboot might not be to your liking but that doesn't mean it sucks. Saying that is like a brony saying G1 sucks.

Aside from my massive MLP collection of over 800 ponies and playsets - doll collecting is my next big collection. I have Barbies and porcelain dolls from all over the world. I also have a rare line of Hot Looks Dolls from the 80s. In addition to those I collect Enchanted Kingdom Horses from the UK.

My porcelain dolls are mostly chosen based on their extravagance and uniqueness. If they are really beautiful, I will have to have them. I like princess porcelain dolls and fairy porcelain dolls. Frankly I could start a toy museum with all the dolls and other toys I collect! haha

I'm a small collection kind of doll collector I suppose. I used to be a "gotta catch em all" collector of Ghoulia, but a few years ago I majorly downgraded my MH collection and sold off all but 5 dolls. Now I'm mainly just focusing on resin BJDs but do occasionally buy other dolls is they catch my interest.

with BJDs I'm mostly interested in fantasy or animal dolls. I have 2 centaurs, a hippogriff, and a variety of anthro dolls. I've only recently ordered my first 2 realistic proportion full human BJDs. We'll see how that goes!
Title: Re: What kind of doll collector are you?

How I collect depends on the dolls in question. In general, I'm drawn to dolls with a bit of a dark edge or unusual features. I really admire (but have yet to buy) a lot of the fantasy range BJD artists that are out there, and follow several on Instagram, but I'm too much of a chicken to take that step yet. I've mostly stuck with fashion dolls, primarily Monster High and Ever After High, though I have several Novi Stars and hybridised Novi Stars as well.

With Monster High, because they were easy to find (they're pretty sparse here since the reboot), I went crazy collecting as many as I could. I have favourite characters (Rochelle and Venus) that I can't pass up most of the time. I have all of Rochelle's releases, plus a few extras that are custom WIPs, and I'm only missing three of Venus' releases (two of which are from the reboot, which I'm not overly fond of due to their gapping joints).

For more expensive lines, I'm definitely pickier. Partially because of the additional cost, but also because of the risk of not being 100% in love with a doll when I buy it. If I don't absolutely love a MH doll, I feel no worry about modifying the shoes, hair, outfit, etc. but with a more expensive doll, the risk of ruining the product is a lot more weighty, due to rarity, and the cost of international shipping on top of the doll's base price. That said, I have two Pullips, both of which are
darker in theme, and from the Creator's Label range (Bloody Red Hood and Alura). I also have a short list of others I'd like to get eventually, but am in no hurry at the moment, as I'm a bit short on space.

I also am just starting to dip my toes into BJDs. I have two Hujoo Freya dolls (strung ABS dolls), and an Island Doll Pocket Pet AnAn (1:12 scale resin kitten). Again, with these dolls, I'm being much pickier about my purchases, and have been researching for months before I buy my first large doll. Right now, I'm pretty sure I want a Fairyline or Minifee from Fairyland, but I haven't completely decided on the face I want, or the style I want to dress her in. I have two "characters" I've narrowed it down to, but I've yet to take the crucial step of actually buying the doll. If I'd had the money, guts, and space at the time, I would have bought Sircca's fullset in a heartbeat.

I pretty much had started and stayed in the MH camp (...stares at post count from many a MH discussion...), with a fairly hefty (for me) collection of dolls. Pretty much if I liked the character/doll, I got it. (I got to have at least 20, perhaps a bit more) but very slowly fell out of that (and kind EAH after the like three dolls I got) when the quality (more jointless dolls, lack of stands, QC in general) started to slip, though a few of the MH reboot dolls do catch my eye.

A friend of mine gave me a little Hujoo BJD that she got for free when she got her last BJD so I am rather interested in a few of them myself now.. buuuuuuut without a car/jobs it has kept me from getting sucked into that right now (probably to my husband's relief, he gets creeped out by them xD). It's a shame. I like taking pictures of articulated dolls and I feel like I'd get a lot of use out of another BJD.

I'd been more of a small collection doll person, but between 2011 and 2014 I went a little overboard and ended up with a large collection. I've decided I'm happier with a smaller collection though, so now I'm trying to thin them out - it's tough deciding who to part with, but I move so often that having to pack up everything every couple of years has just gotten irritating. And once the collection is more stressful and less fun, I figure it's time to change the way I'm approaching it.  :)

I started with BJDs then slowly shifted focus to 1/6 fashion dolls. I used to like FR and all japanese/asian kind of dolls (Misaki, Annz dolls, some obscure lines from Volks and Azone, Licca, Momoko, Rune dolls, U-noa Light... name it and I probably have it or know it), and Blythe/Pullips to a lesser extent. Then had a vintage phase and started collecting folls from the 60s/70s. Then came MH. Then I decided that action figures were a thing. Then I  got interested in Disney dolls and thought I had to have some. Then playlines again. Then Blythes again...

I guess I go with anything that piques my interest at any given moment, even if I tend to stick to dolls that are unique and peculiar in some way.

I have a soft spot for redheads and PINK-haired dolls, which is a bit surprising since I don't usually like dolls that are too stereotypically "girly".

I also love kitbashing characters with 1/6 action figures, even if the hobby became a bit too expensive as of late and it's not as funny anymore...

I could have sworn I posted in this thread before

Well.. like all of my collections I just collect dolls I like, I've never really been a completionist - like, I'm not the kind of person to buy something just to complete a set, even though I don't really like said thing.

I was never a doll person as a kid, there were one or two I thought were okay but on the whole I preferred animal toys :D I think a lot of dolls are sort of boring.. I'm not really into normal human dolls, like Barbie and such. Not to say that I think they're ugly or anything, some of them I like, but they just don't really appeal to me, never have done.

Hmm.. I might be getting some of the details mixed up here since it's been so long now.. buuut around 10 years ago (I think it was 10 years ago, anyway.. maybe 9.. my sense of time is really skewed XD) while on holiday, I found some Ojamajo Doremi dolls and you bet I snaffled them up. I was amazed, there was anime stuff! Right in front of me, on an actual, physical shop's shelves!! There weren't any speciality nerdy shops near me at the time (not that I found these dolls in a nerd shop - they were released to coincide with the French dub of the series - but you know. Actually, I'm still not sure what they were doing there, I'm pretty sure they were old stock by that point.. -shrug- Who knows) and this was before you could walk into a normal bookshelf and find manga (at least where I lived) so this was amazing to me. *And* it was not only an anime I had heard of, but one of my favourite ones! So I got them, and they had the next set when we went back the next year (I think.. again, I might be getting the exact timeline of everything mixed up here ^^;), and I loved them but didn't do much with them.

Then some years later I started hardcore collecting Doremi stuff, hunting down the dolls and such (I think it really started when I found out they had made a doll of my favourite char, Poppu, but she was quite rare - I'd always wanted a doll of her, and the other two characters I was missing, so when I found out that they did exist.. :p I did get her after a while, btw.. -pokes avatar- She's still one of my absolute favourite dolls  :)), and then Monster High came along shortly after that and ate my brains. XP

No, but seriously, I'd admired dolls online for years but there still weren't really any that grabbed me, you know? Like, I love looking at BJDs and there's a lot that I adore (cough, Dearmine, cough) but I don't see myself ever getting one - too expensive, and honestly, I don't think I'd be able to enjoy one; I'd be too afraid of screwing it up somehow. (I do love looking at them, though ^_^) Like I say, I've always preferred animals to humans.. and MH's werecats were just *exactly* what I'd always longed for. And then I fell for the rest of them too and the next thing you know, I've been dragged down the rabbit hole of doll collecting  You know how it is, you look up photos of MH and then oh look what's this interesting looking thing? Ooooh and look at this, more anthro kitty dolls! And then there's the ol' "looking at the MH aisle and this was next to them" thing, too.. :p etc etc.

So I collect an odd variety of dolls. XD I like anthros, and things that are a bit unusual. Boy dolls don't do it for me in general; I do have a few, but most playline ones are too... ehh. Too muscley and short-haired and not really my sort of dude. (I was so happy when MH Neighthan came out.. a playline boy doll with long! hair!!! *w*) Anime/Japanese boy dolls tend to be more to my tastes, but also they're more expensive. :p I do like anime dolls in general... sure they're mostly still 'humans' but they're still a bit more exciting than generic blonde hair/blue eyed dolls, you know? (No offense to those that like those kind of dolls, of course :) There are some that are nice - I do like MLP's Megan and Molly - but they're just not my thing, as a rule) I like unusual/obscure oddments, too.

So basically, I guess you could say I'm a "bit of everything" sort of doll collector :P I was hardcore collecting MH, but they pretty much went down the toilet after the reboot (I mean, there's the odd gem here and there, but in general.. -_-), Equestria Girls are dead too () and really in general it seems like all of the current playline stuff I collect is either finished or has gone through a horrible reboot o.O So I'm sort of in doll-collecting limbo atm, haha.

Although Enchantimals seem to be getting a pretty good hold on me... :P

I don't really collect any specific brands. I have some old, porcelain dolls from charity shops in my area. Other than that I don't have much. About 4 Equestria Girls dolls and one Winx Club doll that I got a few years ago.
I stopped buying any recent in-store dolls or toys as many of them dropped in quality.
If I'd add to my collection, which I probably will, I'd get some of my grandma's dolls and more porcelain ones. My mother usually buys them for me as gifts. They're pretty cheap and easy to find, since the charity shops around have a bunch of them.
I really like sinister looking ones, or If I find one that speaks to me I'll definitely buy it. All of the dolls have really unique dresses.

I collected collector Barbies in the late 90s. I sold most, but regret selling a couple of them. (Madame du Barbie and the first Vera Wang bride.) I still have Peaches and Cream. (The vintage one not the repro) I wanted her so bad as a kid and never got her. I would love to get Jewel Secrets Whitney. She was my favorite. I bought a Blythe and only had one for about 6 years. Now I have 8. I'm starting to lose interest in them and have thought about selling them. I bought a few MH dolls, but sold almost all. I have some vintage SSC dolls. I loved those as a kid. I'm collecting Dal and Byul right now. I've been thinking hard about Fashion Royalty dolls. Almost all of my current dolls I have bought used. I'm not a picky collector. A few dolls I want with stock, but most come nude. I really love articulated dolls. I think that's why I'm starting to lose interest in Blythe dolls. To me they look weird with the obitsu bodies.

I started off collecting Monster High because I just LOVED Operetta and I still collect the odd one, but for me, I mostly collect dolls that I like or dolls that are unusual. I love collecting barbie since my sister and I had them as kids, and other dolls. I also like collecting Shopkins Shoppies because they're really cute. I tend to only go for dolls I like in person, dolls with nice faces and ones that aren't too big because otherwise I just don't have the space. I also have a One Direction Louis doll and some other random dolls like Novi Stars, Cherry Merry Muffin and Cupcake Surprises.
