So Cherries Jubilee and the Wiki.
« on: March 28, 2024, 01:49:45 PM »
Is there anyone around at the moment with the ability to edit the Wiki?
Noticed this this morning.

http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Cherries_Jubilee#European_Cherries_Jubilee

(Note = this post is about versions made in HK, predominately. Italy and Spain etc are a whole other rabbithole, LOL)

There's still some confusion about how CJ was sold in the UK and Europe, and the above Wiki description for the European CJ is...not right. So just to clear things up a bit, here's my random geek ted talk on Cherries Jubilee, because she's awesome, and we should talk about her more.

And also I hope someone will fix the above linked information :P

So, Cherries Jubilee in Europe and the UK...

#1
"Groom and Style" Cherries Jubilee.
This pony is the same as the US release from year three.
The Groom and Style moniker comes from Hasbro's own files, probably because the set introduced curly hair over here :)
This Cherries Jubilee was sold in 1985, and packaged like this:

This set had Bow Tie and Applejack in the collector pose. Bow Tie had curls.
In some places in Europe this set was sold with the ponies made in other places eg Italy, but on the same card. This set was also sold like this in some places in Europe, and also on US style card in places in Europe.

#2
1986 Cherries Jubilee (Second Edition, or UK Cherries Jubilee)
This pony has straight hair, normally straight like Posey or Tootsie.
She has a darker symbol.
She was sold in 1986, like this:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

This set had Posey with dark tulips, as well as Gypsy, Hopscotch, Snowflake and Honeycomb.
This Cherries Jubilee was sold in the UK and any country that also had Gypsy and Honeycomb in this set.

...Up to this point the Wiki is correct. However...

#3
European Cherries Jubilee, (circa 1986)
Has curly hair and a dark symbol. This is she:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

She was NOT sold in the UK. She was NOT a groom and style pony. She was NOT sold in the set with Bow Tie and AJ.
She WAS sold in continental Europe, in countries where they had HK versions of this set in 1986 (the Netherlands is one such place).
She was sold in a set with Hopscotch, Snowflake, WHITE TOOTSIE (Hong Kong), Posey (dark symbols) and Lickety Split (yes, a different version :D Goodie).
I don't have her backcard, but this is the set she belongs in.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

In some countries this same set was sold with ponies made in Spain or Italy.
In some places (eg Netherlands) this set were sold on the first release UK or US card from 1985, which did not picture the c correct ponies on front or back.

So, in summary.
Groom and Style CJ - sold in 1985, same as US version, in set with CP Bow Tie and AJ
UK CJ - straight hair, in Gypsy and Honeycomb's set, dark symbols.
European CJ - curly hair, dark symbols, in white Tootsie's set.

...If someone could fix the CJ page to reflect this, I would be so grateful.
Also, thank you for coming to my CJ Ted Talk.

Bonus:
The Wikipedia doesn't actually include European Lickety Split, the one listed is the regular groom and style version on the European card (which was sold in the US, in the UK, in Europe, and all over).
The text is correct as far as that goes, but this...
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

is European (second edition) Lickety Split...;)

I've updated the European CJ section to hopefully reflect this information, I'll make a note to check on the LS page and update that as well...let me know if there's any errors that remain!

TRTL, thank you for doing that :D

I wouldn't say incorrectly assigned them to the Groom & Style set as that was a UK only moniker rather than something used in Europe. But otherwise it looks great now :D

Groom & Style was just the name used in the UK by Hasbro to refer to the year 3 set. We had the CP AJ and Bow Tie at the same time the US had curly haired shy pose Bow Tie and AJ. That's the main difference. Europe also had the CP AJ and Bow Tie in this set.

The UK only had the shy pose/straight haired Bow Tie and AJ in the set with Bubbles and Seashell.

While we're being confusing, there are also things like this, but I honestly have no idea how they happened or what other ponies were sold in the set/when as all the names are removed and Bow Tie is not pictured.

That is interesting! I am quite sure my childhood Italian Cherries Jubilee came in the same set like Bow Tie and Applejack in the shy pose. These were my first ponies and they were bought in the same store at the same time. Does this make sense?

Yes, that makes sense! As far as I understand (and my information comes from talking to a lot of European collectors over years, LOL) the original y3 earth ponies were sold in some countries in Europe made in Italy. Sometimes on the UK card and sometimes on the US card. I think mostly the ones I've seen from Germany are on the UK card but in German language. Someone can probably correct me if I'm wrong on that, though.

There are CP versions and shy pose versions of AJ and Bow Tie made in Italy and HK. I am fairly sure Germany had the CP versions made in HK (which may be where that German carded Bow Tie on the odd card I have originated), but I'm not certain about the shy pose AJ and Bow Tie made in HK. Definitely Italy, not sure about HK.

My first ponies were all made in Italy.
I have to check my Posey, you said there are also different ones? Like different tulips? Didn’t know that!

Yep, at least in the Hong Kong release.

The one with light pink tulips (they sometimes fade to white) is the original year 3 (or in the Uk, Groom and Style) edition. The one with dark magenta tulips is from 1986. Depending on where you live, that version is in a few sets. I'm pretty sure she's in the set with Truly and Cupcake, the pony friends from 1987. She's definitely in the set with Hopscotch and Snowflake. She's not in the set with Shady and North Star and the other movie star ponies.

The basic reason behind variations like that is probably manufacture in other places. SS Posey was being produced around the same time as the magenta tulip Posey. She has dark symbols to stand out through the fur. It's easier to print dark symbols on all Poseys than separate them out. The European CJ and Lickety Split are probably similar. Lickety is much closer to the SS pink than the original Lickety Split pink. The UK CJ is just...an anomaly. The symbol matches but the hair was changed, probably to fit the rest of the set (as they all have straight, smooth hair). But that's just the UK being weird and contrary as usual :)
