Pony Corral / Re: Is G4 a thing?
« Last post by Taffeta on Today at 03:54:59 PM »
Regardless of all of those production experiments, I understand what Carrehz meant simply because G4 was a streamlined effort in both media and toy production. There's a difference between discovering a detail you never noticed before in an animated episode of a series, and trying to make sense of how seventeen different countries did completely their own things for reasons we're still trying to figure out.

G4 is an entity, for better or worse, and while some ponies were/were not sold in different places, there's no real deviation. Analysing animation is something you can do eternally, true enough - there is no end point for that kind of discussion - but it is still subjective and based on opinion. It's not the same as hey, hang on, why did x pony come with x accessory here and not here?

I understand these are different driving motives, but given that G1 ended in 1995 and we're still having these discussions, compared to how compact G4 is and how recently it ended.

MLPMerch demonstrates this perfectly. It has all the G4 stuff organised beautifully...but still has absolutely no idea how G1 works.

There is not a single G1 ID site on the internet (and I include mine) which has a complete picture of how G1 My Little Pony worked. THIRTY YEARS after it ended.

G1 will always have bigger questions to answer, simply because it was not a collectable at the time it began. It was also not very well coordinated, organised or planned, because it was the first.

Nothing I've said here is disrespect to G4. But by the time you get to G4, the process is polished and the intentions are clearcut. And so many of us were here to watch the whole process from start to finish, with the back history of seeing G2 or G3 in the middle...so there were always people watching as collectors and fans even before G4 blew up.

They're just on different scales of understanding.

Not to mention - speaking as someone who has been actively involved in G1 pony information stuff since the late 1990s - a lot of information for G1 has been collectively lost. It hasn't been lost by those of us who dug it up or those of us who bothered to retain it from back then, but the number of people who don't know stuff about G1 these days which ten years ago would have just been basic information...demonstrates that we're always going to have that conversation about who/what/where/why...probably for as long as G1 is collectable.

There's not as much to talk about with G4 as there is for the earlier gens (IMO) because we know basically everything about it! There's no big mysteries, prototypes, etc like with the earlier gens. Everything's already neatly catalogued and documented.
Don't really agree with this, no offense - I still find myself learning new things about G4, and might even see new things revealed about it (I'm not sure if they're revealed, or I just saw them late, but it's probably the latter), and we don't know for sure if everything has been revealed yet, so there could be so much out there we haven't seen...

Regarding prototypes specifically, I know that G4 had a lot of them. Usually ponies with different symbols/cutie marks than generally expected, being a different pony type, etc. rather than entirely unique characters. Many have been documented, but I wouldn't be surprised if some slipped through the cracks and we ended up discovering them in the future.

Those are beautiful, Artie!

A custom pony contest has started on another site. I want to enter it but I have prior customs to finish. I'm almost done with two out of three. The third I am having difficulties with. He has very complicated and detailed clothing. I've never really sculpted clothing like this. But I'm hoping to finish the two soon so I can start on a pony for the contest.

My snails are nerite O-ring patterned. I was going to get sun spikes, but they were from California and I didn't think they'd survive the trip. I'd like to get three more of a different pattern. Nerite snails don't breed in fresh water so I don't have to worry about that. I have a lot of algae and diatoms in my tank, so they have plenty to eat. They liked the shrimp food I put in too. The shrimp are doing well so far :)

What made me smile today though... I was watching videos of pet dart frogs (I think they are awesome and want to get some some day), one video was a compilation of frogs eating. Michael Jackson's Beat It started playing and I thought okay. But I was wrong. It was Weird Al's Eat It. It made me laugh so hard XD I haven't listened to Weird Al in a long time, so after the frog video I looked him up on YouTube and there's a playlist of his best songs. I got through three of them and had to stop because I was laughing too much. I forgot how funny the videos are.

I sat in my desk chair today, the chair I bought earlier this year, and slowly sank. The gas lift has something wrong with it. I watched a few videos on how to fix it and I'm hoping that the easiest one will work. I need to turn it upside down overnight. The theory is that the lubricating oil inside the cylinder has settled to the bottom. Next to that is getting some oil and replacing it manually. After that, it gets more difficult to fix. So I really hope the first option works.

Also these damn bugs. I watered my plants from the bottom. Taffeta, I did end up putting them in the sink with shallow water and left them there for a few hours to soak it up. I have no food out. Aster ate all her wet food breakfast and the bowl has been washed. They are still flying around my face wherever I go. They are attracted to the light from my PC monitor and fish tank, so they are constantly buzzing the area. I am so sick of dealing with them. The only good news is that the sticky plant spikes don't have a huge amount on them, so they are getting down in numbers.

They power washed the outside of all the buildings today. They used bleach. I hate the smell of bleach. It gives me a headache and makes me nauseous. The smell woke me up from a nap I desperately needed. To make it worse, when they washed my door, because of the gap underneath, some water got inside and got my little mat wet. My little mat that is brown. So now it will probably get bleached spots. I told maintenance about the gap but they said they didn't have any weather stripping to fix it. I might just buy some and fix it myself.

What else? I'm in a lot of pain. I always take my pain meds with dark soda, either Dr. Pepper or Pepsi and I'm out of both with no money to get more. So I felt the meds weren't as effective, but maybe it was placebo. Either way, I'm still in a lot of pain.

As long as I'm on the forum, G4 will always be a thing. :devious:

Seriously though, it's still a thing here, but I guess the reason it's not in focus is because most MLP fans, especially the long term fans think of the toyline first (which makes sense, as that's what MLP first and foremost), and G4 onwards seems more focused on the animation - while I admit to thinking of the cartoons first, I do love and respect the toylines, but I barely know what's even in the G4 to G5 toylines, plus what I have seen seems pretty limited, so there probably isn't that much to say for those who think of the toyline first? Of course, I can't speak for other people...

But yeah, G4 will always be a thing for me. :lovey:

So, a follow up adventure to my cupboard sorting. That same cupboard mentioned in the previous post, now largely cleared of mould, was sitting open and has been the last few days during sorting and cleaning. I had demoulded the top shelf, so I'd left the plastic tubs in there and some of the Dream beauties were lined up along the front of the shelf.

Some time just before 4 this morning I was woken by an ominous sound from the cupboard. I turned the light on and saw that the plastic tub that holds my ponywear had fallen forward and was resting on the backs of the dream beauties. And two or three ponies were now hanging precariously over the edge of the shelf into the abyss...

So at almost 4am I was clambering up on stools, grabbing ponies, stabilising the boxes in the cupboard and making sure everything was safe.

Luckily it happened when I was there. Luckily the ponies it fell onto were the striding pose ones who had a more stable posture. Luckily no Dream Beauties were harmed in this adventure.

...But I'm pretty tired.

I can't believe my luck: I got the Addams set! Second try was crazy again, somehow the system wanted me to solve three captchas that were teeny tiny. It's like they don't want actual humans to win this crap, bots can easily work around these nowadays. And what can people do who have bad sight? Or half blind? Mattel Creations is one big hellsite. How come a company that rich can't afford more IT personnel?

Anyways, I am still waiting vor Venus to appear in stores. Any stores, including online. We slowly got the Refresh dolls trickling in. Distribution here  just follows no rules. I hate when I can't rely on the US distribution anymore. Venus came out months before Refresh Lagoona/Frankie/Cleo.
