I would like to make a list of the ponies that are safe to try and sunfade.
I know TE Quackers is inclined to sunburn but I could use your help to make a decent list of ponies. I know sunfading can always go wrong on these ponies but there are some that are in the danger zone to begin with
'Safe' to sunfade:
- Glory
- Yum yum
- IT Gusty
- Chief!
- Lemondrop,
- Baby Surprise
- baby sister Apple Delight
- Glory
- Sundance
- Bouquet
- Speed
- NBBE Cuddles
Sunburn prone:
- TE Quackers
- Starshine
- Confetti
- UK Gusty
- Chief
- Gingerbread
- Cherry treats
- Whitecap (the two white adult sea ponies)
- Night Glider (strong Australian sun = orange marks)
- Teeny tiny baby honey (strong Australian sun = orange marks)
- Star catcher (faded to the famous Australian green variant)
- Bonnie Bonnets (strong Australian sun = orange marks)
- Mimic
- Bright Eyes
- Windy
- Fireball
Will fade their colour drastically:
- Italian pink ponies like Parasol / Firefly / Twilight (don't think posey is the same kind of pink, never saw one fade)
- Italian Skyflier
- Mexican ponies
Feel free to add to the list. Or if this topic has been done before, kindly point me to it and remove this one :)
This would need to be a very flexible list. For example Party has sun faded Chief with no issues, I turned a Chief a charming shade of tan when I tried to do it. Technically ANY pony can either burn or fade due to either the condition of their plastic or how long they are exposed to it. If a pony is more prone to age marks and cancer they will be more prone to burning, if a pony is more prone to a head/body mismatch they will be more prone to fading.
But all that being said there are plenty of exceptions to the rule on either side.

I turned my Confetti into one crispy critter by trying to sunfade her. :cloud:
I've sunfaded multiple TAF Yum Yums' with much success. Just be SUPER CAREFUL that you cover every single tiny bit of her hair or it will turn white FAST!!!
-
I tried to sunfade UK Gusty and she burned pretty bad :(

It's safe for the symbol? Cause I can't imagine trying to cover every single one of hers :p
-
I have sunfaded an Italian Gusty and it worked great, no sunburning or other issues.
-
I have sun faded Glory and Chief in the past with no problems :)
-
If you have different experiences with a certain pony, please say so and I'll add a ! next to the ponies name
-
I don't know, but I plan on trying a Dutch pony sometime...

As tedious as it is ^^; I would recommend covering them all!

May I ask how you do it? I mean, how is there any part of the pony left to sunfade :p

Not Chief - he could burn, as will Gingerbread and Cherry Treats.

dont fade italian pink ponies! they are already super prone to fading without even trying to they turn white
-
Oh and don't fade sea pony Whitecap! Not safe at all. Mine will be away from sunlight at all times :P
-
I've been carefully fading a very stained Gingerbread. No signs of burning but it hasn't lightened her up a lot either. Her pink hair was already white (although I kept it covered). I live in Oklahoma so our sun is pretty strong, but I checked on her everyday as I had heard she can burn, also.

I think she's the same hard plastic as Quackers. Might have to try that acné cream on my Quackers as i'm scared I'll burn her.
-
Has anyone ever tried to sunfade a G2? I have a nice skyskimmer extra with pink highlighter on her rump.
-
When it comes to G1s, so far, I've sunfaded Lemondrop, baby Surprise, baby sister Apple Delight and Glory. All of them sunfaded nicely, without any complications. All the other ponies that I'm currently sunfading (Surprise, Bunny Hop, Moondancer, NBBE baby Heartthrob, Little Giggles, Euro Confetti and Butterscotch) seem to be doing pretty fine... but that as well may be due to the fact that the sun here doesn't shine as intensely as in other parts of the world... :P
As for the ponies that shouldn't be sunfaded, you can safely add Italian Skyflier to the list. When exposed to the sun for too long, her original color will fade into pale red. Mine's a good example of that:

That's basically it.
As for G2s... So far I've only tried sunfading Secret Tale, and she did quite okay. Not certain about the rest though... I think they should be fine. :)
Also, coming back to Confetti for one second: since the original US Confetti is prone to burning, does that mean that the UK/Euro Confetti shouldn't be sunfaded as well?
-
There is no difference with G1 or G2 or G3...you will be able to sun fade them. As with everything just be careful with fading symbols by mistake and keep an eye on the process.

I just sunfaded TAF Yum Yum to white aswell, and this is how I did it:

It took a while, but its worth it.
-
I bought a bunch of ponies from Gumtree recently - I think they must have been left in a shelf at some point because the following ponies had scorch marks from the Australian sun. They might be perfectly ok with routine sunfading but exercise caution.
Night Glider
Teeny tiny baby honey
Star catcher (faded to the famous Australian green variant)
Bonnie Bonnets
The marks are orange, and the plastic feels slightly brittle.

Mimic, bright eyes and Windy have been unsuccessful sun fades for me. Quakers took to sun fading perfectly. The zit creme plus sun fading on purple or light purple ponies has proven extremely damaging. Works much better alone on certain color ponies, like yellow, in my opinion.

What kind of tape did you use?
-
What kind of tape did you use?
I have no idea what that tape is called, but its really sticky and its kinda like plastic. But i've also used painter's tape, that was much better. The one used in picture left some black marks (easy to wash away, but still). I would say any kind of tape is okay as long as it sticks to the pony.
-
Also, when it comes to covering up symbols and eyes, I highly recommend using Blu-Tack (prefferably the original produced by Bostik). For those of you who don't know what that is: Blu-Tack is a putty-like adhesive that's typically used to stick light-weight objects to dry surfaces (paper, posters etc.) and also as an artistic eraser.
The pony batch I've sunfaded earlier all had their eyes and symbols covered using Blue-Tack and it worked fantastic. Not only does it cover everything perfectly, but it also gets off easily without damaging the paint on pony's eyes and symbol (that even goes for ponies with glitter symbol). Also, it can be easily washed off, so there's no need to be afraid if there are some tiny specs left on the surface of the pony.
Another wonderful thing about Blu-Tack is that it can be kneaded into smaller bits, it works wonderful for covering up TAF symbols more precisely (just prepare yourselves to spend an hour doing so :P).
EDIT:
Sorry for this spam-ish post: just figured I could share something useful with the community. ^^'

My boyfriend is very wary to use those, especially when it's already a bit old, then it leaves blue marks. It did so on the walls of his previous apartment. I think paint tape is very good, (it's the paper kind you mean right?) The black tape is probably isolation tape used for electricity and stuff. I'll have to experiment a bit, have 2 yumyums in my trade box, let's see if they have any marks

Yes, I mean the paper kind. I think its really good, and its safe to use. The black tape is probably meant for something like that, I have no clue. Its just something I found around the house and decided to try.
-
Any idea if US Gusty sunfades well? I'm contemplating sunfading one to whiten her and get rid of some pink marks on her face. I'm rather baffled though by what to do regarding her glitter symbols. I know I shouldn't put tape on them, but I'm planning to sunfade her in the back window of my car, so the coverings need to be something that stays put. Any ideas are welcome!
-
Just wanted to say Mexican pink ponies are not safe to fade  I've also had disastrous results with both adult white sea ponies, gingerbread, and my (now tie dye coloured) Italian twilight. I've had heaps of success with dutch ponies, argentina ponies, and everything else (mostly g1s) I've done. :)
I like to use the most expensive style painters tape (the one that's the least sticky & supposed to be ok to be left on walls longer). I've never had residue left afterwards, or paint taken off. Plus a roll will do hundreds of ponies.
For glitter symbols, just fold a piece of tape together in half and place the non stick side against the glitter symbols before taping over it. ;)
-
If you are worried about putting on tape over symbols you can actually use paint and simply paint over the symbols. All you need is some standard craft paint.
Here is an older tutorial to help you out.

IDK, when I used Blu-Tack on the first batch that I've sunfaded, it didn't do any damage: all the four ponies that I tried sunfading came out okay, with no marks nor any stains whatsoever. Even those ponies who've been exposed to sun for a whole year (baby Surprise and sister Apple Delight) came out okay.
I guess it all depends on weather conditions, like the intensity of the sun the ponies are exposed to. Here in my place, while it sometimes does happen that we have a blazing-hot summer weather, most of the time, "our" summer sun isn't as intesne as in, let's say, Spain, Australia or California.
-
Does anyone know if it is safe to sunfade Sundance?
-
I have never had any issues fading her. But as mentioned before, the important part is to monitor her - every pony can be damaged by the sun.
-
Purple ponies, like Seashell will fade.
-
I think part of it depends on the pony and where in the world they are being sun faded.
-
I sunfaded Baby Sleepy Pie and she is now a bright white!
-
How about BNG Bouquet? Anyone sunfaded her succesfully? I've never been able to burn any ponies with the sun we have in Finland (not even Quackers or Cherry Treats) but wanted to ask anyway so I know to be extra careful.
-
I havent heard any specific issues with Bouquet in the past but she is one of those ponies with a distinct creaminess to her body that I think she was always almost an off white colour :P
-
Yeah I dont think I have ever seen a pure white Bouquet.. I have one on its way right now, and she doesnt look too white in the photos. She's so pretty though, so I was thinking if it would be possible to whiten her. Hmm.. Its worth a try I guess. :)
-
I saw a whitish one lately, only discoloured horn and such. I don't think she's entirely white to start with but I could be wrong on the creamy part :)
-
Bumping this thread. :)
At the same time, I wanted to ask for some advice: I have a NBBE baby Cuddles, which has a couple ink stains on her non-display side and a small pink highlighter mark on her neck. Is it okay to sunfade her? Or better yet, is it even possible? I'm asking since I keep hearing that blue-greenish ponies tend to fade if exposed to sun for prolonged period of time (and I wouldn't, for the life of me, want to ruin her body color). At the same time, I would really like to get rid of those ugly markings somehow, since, like I said, she's near perfect: her eyes are perfect, her symbols are perfect and her hair nice and shiny.
So, any suggestions?
-
My Quackers has been fading for months without burning. :shifty: I got lucky.
I'm glad to finally see a list like this though!
-
Is 4 speed ok to sun fade!?
-
4 Speed should be fine - but because he is prone to cancer be super vigilant with him.
And on Cuddles, you always run the risk of fading the body colour a little but fading the body significantly is going to take much longer than getting rid of the ink. So I would just watch her with care and stop if you get worried.
-
Purple ponies, like Seashell will fade.
Well not sure if this will apply to IT seashell? I have a feeling her hair only faded, not her body colour.

Any pony will fade, any colour will fade - but some will fade faster than others yes. As mentioned before the key is to monitor them.
-
Has anyone sunfaded G1 Moondancer?
-

I wish I could remember who it was, but someone on here faded a bunch of ponies and Bouquet was among them. She got great results and gave me the courage to try to fade some pen marks off mine. I was pretty happy with how white she was before, but I'm super excited with how she looks after a couple of weeks in the sun!

Oh thank you! Added some more names to the list. But of course MONITOR closely :) My sky skimmer is outside to get that nasty highlighter mark off her. Might try my G2 babies next :)
-
I sunfaded an Alt BF daisy, she had pink highlighter around her eye. I fully covered the rest of her just to expose her eye. She was in the conservatory for about 4 months. There is still a tiny bit of pink left but its cleaned up well & it doesn't appear to have affected her colouring.
-
Also found this other post with some more discussion on who to fade or not.

Has anyone here safely sunfaded Glittering Gem? I'm not sure if I can sell her without getting this marker off her.
-
She is not a pony I have ever heard of problems with so hopefully she will be fine :)
-

I think I'll give her a shot then. Minty haired pony with no marker is worth a little more than minty haired pony covered in it. :P
-
Is Princess Tiffany okay to sunfade? Or will her tinsel and symbol melt under foil?
Thanks.
-
Fireball  Don't ever let Fireball go in the sun :nope:
-

Thanks.
It wont melt - takes a very strong heat to do that to the tinsel and the symbol is plastic coated so its fine. However makes sure to cover them both when fading and you will be all fine.
-
I've gotta ask about a couple more: My new 4-Speed has marker on his face and body; magic eraser faded it but didn't remove it. TAF Milky Way has black marker on her ear and forehead. I always worry about boys because I think of them as more sunburn prone; are either of these two known to burn?
-
I have not heard of people having problems with either. But I would advice you to be really careful with 4 Speed - he is prone to cancer which means he could be prone to issues.
-
I'm currently sunfading Salty and he is coming out wonderfully (knock on wood!)! (: So I'd say he is pretty safe to sunfade!
-
I'm soon to be the owner of a slightly discolored Confetti (my very first G1!), and I was wondering if she was alright to sunfade? I've searched around the arena, and I've seen her come out with mixed results. I'd hate to damage her, though.
If she is sunfade-able, what's the best way to cover her symbol since it's glittery?

I've been told before that glitter doesn't necessarily need to be covered. I faded my Parasol and her glitter didn't fade. But, over time, the sun could surely have a negative effect on glitter, so: I'd say cover her butt with saran wrap and color over her symbols with black sharpie.

Ah, wouldn't have thought of that! Thank you!
Does Confetti get "sunburned" at all? Wouldn't want to yellow her more.
-
Its it the trotting pose Confetti? Yes she is very prone to burning. If you decide to fade her be very careful.
-
If sunfading isn't viable for Confetti, you might try testing the bottom of a hoof with a benzyl peroxide acne cream? For a lot of people acne cream is the very last resort because it is risky, but if she's super discolored or it works on the bottom of a hoof you might consider it.
-
Thank you, hathorcat! If that's the case I think I'll just leave her, then.

Once she arrives I'll have to see how discolored she is. If a Magic Eraser doesn't help, I'll test out the acne cream!
-
Has anyone had any experience with Bubbles? I have one that came to me with a blackened bottom and hooves. She's wearing pony shoes to help hide it, but I'd really love to try to fade the spots if I can. She's a very special pony, having once belonged to a young child who died. I promised her sister that I would take care of her ponies when she sold them to me. I know that Bubbles is super common, but I just can't risk testing that particular one.
Also, I think we can add Cotton Candy to the safe list. I just took one out of the window a few days ago!

No problem - to add to your woes a little with Confetti and acne cream. I once used her as an experiment subject and all the acne cream I was testing a theory on did was yellow her. So just be really careful with her. She seems particularly prone to all manner of issues this pony.
And Bubbles should be fine - again as with everything I have said here - just monitor her carefully.
-
Yikes, good to know Hathorcat! Poor Confetti can't catch a break.
-
I just got baby Quackers for free. She is has a disgusting orange tinge to her and 5 cancer spots. Does anyone have any suggestions? If not I think I will try...
1. Magic Eraser - evened the colour and toned down the yellowing to a cream but no effect on cancer spots
2. Acetone... watch this space
3. Sunfading
4. Full body re-paint. Her hair is lovely.

Ooooh! I might try acne cream on the age spots. Thank you!!

I'd say cover her butt with saran wrap and color over her symbols with black sharpie.
I never would've thought of this, either!! Thank you! I'm currently sunfading another Italian Gusty and this was so much easier than trying to cut out little maples leaves to cover her symbols with. ;)
I did test out coloring on saran wrap with the sharpie first to make sure it didn't bleed though (I'm paranoid about sharpies near ponies), but of course it worked. Except for a tiny spot I pushed too hard and made a tiny hole in the saran wrap, so I was super careful and gentle when coloring over the actual symbol on the pony. Just thought I'd warn others about that!

My baby quackers is currently soaking in hydroperoxide, hope it will help :( She's so yellowed! And I will have to check if I can get any of that specific acné cream here.
