Title: First restoration attempt (gulp)
Post by: PlumPonies on August 27, 2021, 01:52:32 PM
I've been working on my first full restoration and am at the point of no return... time to de-hair and dye! I'm trying to restore first tooth baby fifi which was my sister's.

On a side note my collection includes all of my 2 younger sisters mlp. They have no interest in them which I think is crazy. But yes, I did choose one of my sisters' ponies for my first real restore and not one of mine lol.

Anyways, so far I have cleaned inside and out thoroughly and sunfaded to get rid of the dinginess. She was gross!
I've rehaired and dyed ponies before for customs but this will be my first time on a pony I really care about, wish me luck!

I already tried to restore the hair of my childhood ponies which are from the G3! Some didn't work out very well others did!!! My first pony the tinkle twirl doesn't have a tail lol! :hope:

She looks pretty good to me as she is, except for the faded symbols. I would probably just re-paint her symbols and style her hair with hot water. But maybe she looks better in the photo than in real life! I hope she turns out OK. Well done for rescuing all the family ponies!

all Baby Fifi ponies discolour like that, yep
she just needs a new symbol and she'll be in decent shape

I agree with the other posters-I would just condition and possibly defrizz her hair and give her new symbols. :)

Well darn, I had already de-haired her last night when I saw everyone's advice today. Her tail was in really, really bad shape for the end 1/3 or so and my attempts to get all the rust staining out and smoothing didn't get me very far. I figured if she needed a new tail might she might as well have a pretty new mane also but maybe I got carried away and should have left well enough alone. I'll post some pics when she's put back together, hopefully I didn't mess her up too bad.

I can't wait to see your updates! I've been doing some restoration myself for a bit now, and I've learned that everyone has different measurements for what a "successful" restore means. Some of us want to get rid of all of the marks and rehair everything, while some of us are fine with leaving the difficult marks and hairs alone. It all depends on what you, the pony owner, think would make the best restored pony. So, if you like her when she's all put together, you didn't mess her up at all. :)

Here she is, back from the pony salon! I think she turned out really great although I found out dyeing to match a specific pony color is way harder than dyeing for a custom pony. She's a little more bold color than I was originally aiming for but in all I'm very happy with the results. And now that I haven't totally botched her I can share with my sister  :lookround:

She turned out so well! I love her bold color, it reminds me of a deflocked Fifi. :lovey:

I'm shook! She looks amazing! Really well done  :newpony:
I don't think the blue looks off at all. I have a few Fifi's, and the one in the best condition is about that shade.
Aldo, her symbols and hair are *chefs kiss*

She turned out great! Her color looks good. You're right though...I feel your pain on trying to dye to match an original pony's color, especially if you don't own another of the pony in question for comparison. I've had quite the nightmare of a time trying to get one to match Mimic's green, being as I can't afford the original, and she seems to show up different colors in every online photo out there depending on people's camera and lighting.
