The Dollhouse / 90's Barbie doll customs wanted!
« on: July 02, 2017, 05:47:22 AM »
Dear all,

I kind of suspect this topic is out of place, but I am much more familiar with this community than with Barbie collectors/ artists, so I decided to ask here first: does anybody here customises Barbie dolls?

I am after OOAKs based on those 90's wide-eyed, big-haired, unapologetically & unrealistically sexy-looking, not-a-care-in-the-world girls I am familiar with from my childhood. What I want is a few ones that Mattel never bothered to make, like a "Happy Holidays" Marina/Kira doll (for those who are familiar with the line). The artist will have to provide make-up and rehair & restyle on bait dolls to match the quality and style of what would have been a fresh-out-of-the-box, factory-made Barbie. I suspect that the task is relatively easy for an experienced artist but I have to confess I can be annoyingly picky. What do you think? Please, contact me privately if interested! I might not respond ASAP as I am not here often, but I will do my best.

P.S: Please, move this thread if it belongs to another area  :icecream:

[Moving this to Dollhouse! Thanks, Uninu]

She does!! Her tiny Takara cousin! I love that her hands are in a different gesture than the others'! Great finds, they all look so happy together!
I like the way you accessorise them too, everyone has their own, unique style! And that group photo is the cutest, like a kindergarten group photo: class of '86
(or you name it)!

Thank you for posting them!

MLP Nirvana / I feel like ranting!

Dear all,

I am an MLP pony lover ever since I was 5 - my first ever was Chloe, being greek myself, and an enthousiastic collector from 2003 until 2009 (roughly). I stopped collecting gradually, because I very much needed to come back from the other side of the rainbow. My pony love was becoming an addiction and, as such, it was consuming my energy, my time and my money. So, I admitted I had a problem (it' s the first step, as they say) and I stayed sober, with the few exceptions of Lyra and some very precious gifts from great fiends. I even down-sized my collection a bit and used the money from re-homed ponies to go on vacation!

So, apparently, I missed a lot that happened here, on FB, eBay, you name it, although I never renounced my love for ponies. I have not visited the Arena in A LONG TIME now and I decided to log in a few days ago. A friend of mine urged me to look at the "Important Note regarding Greek MIBs". I had a discussion with a moderator not too long ago on this topic and didn't really put too much thought into it but there is a problem. Greek ponies are very dear to me - they started it all for me. And they are very popular among the community for all the right reasons. So, to hear that some people are trying to make some easy money, taking us for fools infuriates me. Everybody can discern whether a pony has been re-haired, but would one open a pricey MOC to look inside its head? Tough one. And what kind of b@$4@%d would "kill" innocent, rare ponies to fool a niche market with an expertise knowledge on the topic? It's easy to give a second chance in life to a heavily-loved (call them bait) pony, even a greek one, but who in their right mind think the effort would go un-noticed?

Furthermore, El Greco workers, much as they had fun experimenting with colours and poses, did follow certain patterns, so there are pony "families" sharing the same popular traits. And although we probably haven't seen it all yet, there are a few things we know we won't legitimately find.

So, to all those sneaky people out there lurking for easy-money, you don't fool us. This is a collector's community, above all, and we know the difference between a rarity and a custom. Furthermore, it's not fair to spread un-based rumours about El-Greco. A toy-shop owner would occasionally throw left-over toy figures together in boxes but this wasn't done with the intention to "marry" the toy-lines, rather to get rid of unwanted stock - and provide a home for those who were looked-down at (most toy-shop owners were usually genuine kids at heart)! I remember seeing the Greek Show-Stable sold with some Hasbro pony as a freebie or Easter Candles adorned with unsold Happy-Happy Sister dolls and even one with TE Sweet Tooth on, but these were private initiatives. Be careful with the information you read. Some people would say anything for quick money but El Greco's official catalogues were extremely detailed and precise.

Sorry for the "tsunami", I just had to get it out of my chest! If anyone needs any help regarding greek ponies, feel free to ask me. I will probably log in again in a couple of years to reply !

They look amazing, it's a good thing for my bank account there is nothing green about them!  :P

I remember seeing Takara fakies all over the place in Athens and my home-town growing up and I never bothered with them, I hated everything fakie back then! Have I known better...

She doesn't look faded to me, rather like a VERY special lady! El Greco will probably never stop surprising us! Congratulations on your find! The blue mark on her leg should have come from contacting some other blue material. Sadly, Greek ponies came with this disadvantage: the plastic is really absorbant of other colours, so people often discover ponies with hot pink marks from saddles or shoes, or simply because they left the pony on e.g. a vividly painted surface. Same problem with faded cutie-marks, the plastic absorbed the red / pink ink. if you leave her out in the sun, she should clean-off rather well. And with proper care her colours will overall become even more alive!

Thanks for the much-needed pony-fix!

I' ve seen quite a few MIB ones with either combs and flower / star -shaped brushes. My original guess would be that El Greco started with combs and moved on to brushes as they introduced Unicorns and Pegasi and started producing their accessories. My original Chloe had a teal star brush (and the pink, "new" leaflet") and as a 5 y.o. kid I thought it was very appropriate since I got her for Christmas and related it to the Nativity Star! And I found one with a comb, also MIB.

But my dark-green haired baby Chloe has a comb whereas my pale-green one has a star-brush, although I believe pale-green was the earliest version. So, I am convinced that there was a pattern, combs first, brushes later-on, though they probably didn't throw away anything and would include left-over accessories to newer ponies.

I have also seen unusual accessories like darker-blue cribs, red ribbons and dark blue accessories with MIB ponies. Accessory and pony-wear fanatics with an eye for detail would find heaven with the never-ending variations! El Greco followed the '80's neon craze as with its other popular girls' toy-lines and ponies got lucky!

From the country that made some of the coolest ponies out there, Greece, this guy really ROCKS! And, no, this is not me (nor do I know him).

I am not around often these past years but I just wanted to wish you all a wonderful weekend!

If you check the inside of her body, you will probably see its original colour - it's usually unaffected by discolouration or sun-fading. I have seen the (Greek) sun bringing colours back to life but be careful: too much sun will make her colours look even paler. So, do sunbath her but conservatively! She is lovely!

"Nothing is real but the girl" by Blondie. I was listing to it remixed and a few other club hits in late 2003, early 2004 when I started recollecting ponies again. I was in the UK for my MBA, my housemates were away and I had the CD playing while I was cleaning my freshly won lots of TE and BnG's. Nothing Is Real always brings back the happy memories!!

I love pony armies! At first I thought it was just silly but back in 2006 I visited MLP Convention in Birmingham, UK, and as soon as I entered to room, a fellow collector was displaying her Minty army! That was it!!! PinkKittyWinks and the Nirvana Forum are guilty, as well, for introducing me to the plethora of different Minties from all over the world... Here is my Minty & Chloe (Greek Minty, Χλόη) armies! Pictures are a bit outdated but you'll get the idea:

MLP Nirvana / Re: New Greek Baby Ponies discovered!!!

My spies tell me that someone found TWO of these orange pegasus babies with orange hair and rattle symbols MIB with buggies some months ago from an old toy store outside of Athens and that one of them is -gossip has it- already sold to a high-profile collector... Some people who find old MLP stock here don't want to share information with the rest of us, assuming this attitude adds up to the ponies' value. Or, maybe they believe we are going to raid their houses and steal the treasure, who knows? Too many actions films or FIM episodes, if you ask me.

Oi, there are rumours that there is a dark blue baby pegasus too, in the colours of Greek Baby Glory *ducks to avoid flying fakies*
