So I made a lighting rig for my ponies.
« on: July 19, 2012, 03:11:59 PM »
Like most of my DIY lighting gear, it's held together with duct tape and zip ties, but it works!

Just took one quick shot with it, haven't really sat down and played with it yet.

There's three softboxes, one of them hanging up as a hairlight, and a snoot. Going to mess around with it later, take some more pictures.

More pics! Luna and Rarity. Though I didn't make this for Rarity, I'm sure  Rarity thinks it was made for her.

Luna shots have the hair light, and a soft box on the right side.

It is actually very easy to do, they sell great kits on ebay that are affordable or you can rig your own.

Mine is just flood light reflectors loaded with home depot versions of ott lights - three total.  I have the background set up on a board so I can pin different fabrics over it.  Here are two random shots done on it -

This is a custom Breyer I have in the works -

Okay how do you set this up where you won't have shadows? I have always wanted to know how to do that..do tell.

The way to eliminate shadows is with lots of light. Flood the subject with light so any place that has the potential for shadows is illuminated.

I use three lights all equal wattage, you can use more but for such small subjects not so much.  One each should be to each side. Now the trick to make the shadows go bye bye is to have one shine down from the top.  Mine happens to hang from a cord from the ceiling.  The other two leave on trip pods that normally a camera would sit on.

Flooding with a ton of light can cause harsh colors and wash a subject out.  The angle of the lights is the real trick.  I try to keep by two side lights at about 45 degrees from the subject.  Sometimes I will play with it depending upon the subject matter.

Background helps, if you happen to get your hands on some black velvet it makes it so much easier to loose shadows.
