US price of a standard pony in the 80's?
« on: August 22, 2012, 08:58:06 PM »
Hi there everypony...

Just a very simple question, what was the retail price of a standard my little pony in the 80's?

I am just talking an AppleJack, Posey, Etc.

And did the price increase on standard blister card ponies through the 80's?

I.e. did hasbro charge the same price for a very basic pony, to so-softs, sundae bests, rainbow curls etc.... Or did the prices increase over time, either due to inflation or the fact that they were adding more innovations like flocking, scent, styling, accessories etc?

Thanks

BBP

About $5.

I believe most sets in boxes cost more, like the Brush 'n Grow ponies or Happy Tails.

Yeah, those woulda been $5. I remember the twins were $10 and one time I actually had a twenty dollar bill in my hand for the first time in my life, what did I do with it? I bought Sweet Sundrop the prom queen SHS and The Pony Bride which I named Mary (very original, lol) My dad had to help out with tax, but they were $10 each.

I know folks have told me around $5 because when the G3 came out at $3.99 or $4.99 some folks where saying how they where less then the G1.  I would not know first hand, I was way past ponies when they came out. LOL

I bought Sweet Sundrop the prom queen SHS

Awesome. Sweet Sundrop was the very first purchase I ever made with my carefully saved up allowance. I think dad had to help me with tax too, because I remember a betrayed 'there's more than the pricetag!?'

I named my Sundrop 'Crowna' because I didn't realize non-show ponies came with names.

EDIT: Also I remember a big deal being made of the g3s when they came out about them being the same price, five dollars, as the originals.

This was also the day I found out they cost more in canada when I rushed to the store :|

About $5.

Interesting...it's the same price it is now except the ponies are much smaller and the quality is less.

I guess $5 was a little expensive in the 80s?

Try £6-7 per pony in the UK in the 80s ;) crazy expensive and that's why I had such a small collection at the time :)

I'm not sure if $5 was really that much back in the 80's either, toys in general didn't go up that much with inflation like other things. It's recently they made the biggest jump. Even just 10 years ago, an example I like is the My First Princess Disney dolls they were huge dolls but were only $15 each, now they're $25-30. IDKY toys took longer to "catch up" with inflation.

I had Princess Tiffany as a kid too, but I think mine was $10, it depends on what store you go to, too. The stores in the malls like KB Toys were always more expensive. I remember individual Newborns and Teeny Tiny Ponies were a little cheaper though, usually $3.50. I was thrilled by that, because the cheaper the pony, the better chances I had of talking mom into buying it for me! I had all the Teeny Tinies and all but Squirmy of the Newborns. (I still NEED Squirmy!)

$5 was worth twice as much in the 80s . . . about $10 in today's money.

In 1984 the federal minimum wage was only $3.35.  And I could buy a candy bar for 35 cents.  I remember being really peeved when they increased to 40 cents.

Using my handy dandy inflation calculator (I used the year 1985 because I thought it looked good), $5 then would be $10.65 now. I hope that clears up anything c:
