Precious Gem's hair... (Updated 8/29: Detangled!!)
« on: August 15, 2016, 07:05:30 PM »
Did Hasbro not realize that this pony's hair would inevitably become a huge mess??  :stressed:

Should I try to preserve any of the (hopelessly tangled and matted) curl?  Or just pick it out and use a straightener on the frizz?

I don't even collect G3s...

However, I do have very curly hair, so I can sort of sympathize with her predicament.   :drunk:

UPDATE 8/18:

I've managed to pick out most of the tail mess.  However, even using loads of conditioner, it seems to get frizzier as I keep working on it.  At first, I thought I might be able to actually restore the curl, but it doesn't look like it now.

And her tail is quite a bit longer than I had realized...

UPDATE 8/22:

I think I've done about all I can as far as de-frizzing her tail goes.  There is still some at the end, but it's not getting any better if I keep working on it.  At least, I can actually comb it now.

I also got the pink section of her mane picked out, and it still has some curl.  However, she lost quite a bit of hair in the process.  Even with careful combing, chunks of it pulled out.  Sigh...

Update 8/29:

I'm declaring her to be finished.  I'll just post her on my trade list like this.

you could always straightener and then re-curl?

My daughter has curls. I would pick out those knots. Detangler spray works wonders on ponies btw.  ;)

I'd gently and thoroughly detangle and straighten it out. Whether you recurl it afterwards is up to you.

This is why I personally don't like factory curls on ponies, regardless of how pretty it looks., it can turn into a crazy, tangled mess when left in a toybox.

I'd straighten it, then recurl and boil set it.

Somewhere, there is a gorgeous pic of this pony with streightened hair. She looks amazing with it!

I agree with the straighten and recurl opinion. But please post a pic of her hair all straight. I'd love to see it!

She's pretty rough, but it's hard to tell if she's fixable. I mean, she's a common enough G3 if you just want to go ahead and straighten and re-set the curls. Mine was in a similar condition, but I like to restore original hair, so I carefully combed out her matted hair with conditioner, starting at the bottom and not pulling at all, just short little strokes, teasing out the knots carefully, and re-curling the ends as I worked. Mine is mint now, and I didn't resort to straightening. Sometimes the curls sit a little loose if she gets moved, but that's only because I never re-set them, just rinsed and dried them on a towel.

My new favorite for pony hair is a 3 Minute Conditioning Mask by Fructis. Dampen the hair and lather that stuff in. If you let it sit and carefully comb it through most of the natural curl will come back. Just give it a little help with some straw or sponge curlers. I recently washed a Dancing Butterflies with that and all her curl bounced right back and she's glamorously lovely!

Updated with a progress picture of her tail.  I'm getting rather frustrated with the frizz that seems to keep getting worse and making more tangles as I work...   :stressed:

This was exactly my reaction when she was first released.  I took one look at her and thought "Here is a pony destined to have a rat's nest flowing from her neck."

I might try that next.  Even using a flat iron/straightener isn't working too well...   :yikes:
