Needles for rehairing tool?
« on: February 09, 2012, 03:57:05 AM »
First sorry if it's not appropriate to write this here, so please Mods move it if wrong and I apologize for my mistake  :)
I have an hellish bait pony with a bad behaviour which destroyed all my needles so now she's incomplete and I cannot go further.
I used really few hairs since plugs are small and on my first custom I broke a needle cause was using too many hairs at once but this time despite my care I noticed it was hard to pull them inside and in fact...I broke my last 2 needles
Does someone in EU sells those needles? I'm unsure on how to cut them and I want to keep my rehairing job asap...US packages takes a month or so to arrive in Italy
Or someone can teach me how to do to create them by myself?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I make my own needles hun and it is rather easy. You can buy tapestry needles at the store, they are a good medium needle, not too big but not too small as they will just break right away. Then you need a pair of wire cutters, the kind that are sort of like pliers but with the end being flat and one side has a cutting edge. Just use those to snip the end of the head of the needle, it won't be super easy mind you; you will have to squeeze the cutters pretty hard and I have found carefully wiggling the needle back and forth a little can help too. If I send you another pony anytime soon I will toss some in the package for you.

I buy a big pack of needles in assorted sizes, and use wire cutters to cut the eye of the needle on an angle.

Yup, I agree with what the others have said; I used to make my own rehairing needles from tapestry needles.
But, I have yet to break the needle that came with Pop's tool and I've been using it for over a year now. :cheer:

I also make my own needles, and I use a size 8 or 9 sewing needle. I tried, I think, darning needles? They were big.. ANyway.. They were too big. I found them catching the vinyl too much.

I went through a couple different brands of needles before I found one I could snip without the needle eye just shattering. I use Singer needles that come in the little cardboard backed packets, rather than the variety plastic wheels. Those ones shattered every time.

I snip the eye of the needle at a slight angle with the wire cutters. I find that if you do it slow, it can just flatten the metal instead of snip it.. So I position the needle, then grasp the pliers with both hands, and squeeze really hard really fast. I do this inside a plastic shopping bag to catch the needle bits, because they fly off.

I then cut the needle itself in half, and insert it into an Xacto knife handle.

When rehairing, I also use an awl to widen the holes before putting the hair in. If you are breaking needles, this might help you. The vinyl relaxes back into place after a bit, so it isn't hurt by the awl. But the awl widens the hole just enough to make the needle go in without a fight.

Hope that helps :)

Thank you a lot guys!  :)
I asked my man to cut some needles I had at home, they are not properly fine and took me a bit but was able to finish the pony thanks also to Maniah, I widened the holes as you suggested.
I'm gonna buy better needles and cut them as you suggested  :)
@Kcherry: lucky you LOL this custom is a destroyer even if I used all the care I could have
@Tiella: thank you dear  :)

i use these things!

i use a pin or thumb tack to open the hole up a bit and slip it though the from outside to inside.  I double up the hair putting the loop at the short end and "crochet" it together inside... umn interlocking the loops....kinda like the factory weave...  I use pliers to pull it through. i can do a whole head in an afternoon no probs this way!

I tried that before but with wire and pliers. Didn't work so well for me. Took two days as opposed to the Rehairing tool. I can plug a whole head in an hour or two with a Rehairing tool. I bet having good small pliers is super important for that method.

mine are normal sized, but they are good.  my dad made sure of that!  I do have to split the "pre-separated" plugs from dollyhair in half usually though.  If i cant pull it through i know i have too much!
