Can you bake hard plastic toys?
« on: June 08, 2015, 08:55:22 PM »
I have a hard plastic hollow generic horse I picked up for .50 cents and I want to make it into a carousel horse. The problem is I don't have apoxy sculpt and can't afford any atm. Does anyone think she would survive baking?

depends how long she is in there and what type of plastic she is made of I would say.

keep a close eye on her though, might still melt.

Depends on the plastic, but for most, I'd probably go with no.

I've cooked ponies and other toys in the oven.  It is risky but not impossible.

Super sculpty actually bakes at a low temp anyway (275).  So I put it in at 250-275 (keep an eye on your oven thermometer)-

and the most important part-  cover ALL of the parts of your critter that are not being baked with foil. So wrap up the legs, wings, mane/tail, - anything that doesn't have something that needs to bake- wrap it in thick foil. Make a little hat for the ears.

Also don't lie the critter on its side- the softened plastic may cause the legs to droop and then it wont stand correctly after.

GOOD LUCK!

I might be more afraid of burning the toy than melting it, btw. It would be nice if you knew exactly what it was made out of to be sure! And maybe put it on a cookie sheet that you really don't care about if it gets damaged? Even if you line it with tin foil. You don't know what's going to happen!

I decided to just go with minor sculpting using air dry clay and will use this ribbons and lace to make her pretty.

I have absolutely no advice, I just wanted to say how sweet it was that you didn't want the poor horse to go to waste   :)
