Um... all of the above?

I kinda wanna say Appaloosa or Paint since it's Native American and those are the horses that first come to mind. The Dapple is nice too!

As a native american I would ask that you please do a lot of research about the symbols and designs on the horses and not include items that are not actually put on them (ex: war bonnets/the head dress you're talking about). Those are not meant to be put on a horse. EVER.

Preferences depend on tribes but credit for the appaloosa goes to the Nez Perce if you want to see what they looked like when decorated.

You could go for a medicine hat paint as well, though I think information about which tribe showed a preference for that marking has been lost.

Relate and agree!
Although I personally am more lenient on the head-dress. As a pony custom can become a caricature. But please be sure to do the research!

I'm Cherokee (Eastern Band) and would ask that you handle the custom with respect.
It is misappropriation to decorate a horse with war bonnets (which by the way where never used on horses), generic body "symbols" or other such nonsense.

There are plenty of sites that can offer information about what horses mean to Native American/First Nations people. The reality, not the myth or stereotype.

And please no use of Powwow regalia, yes horses are outfitted for such events. And the items are immensely private and personal, not something for a stranger to snag.

Let's please keep this discussion on topic. The original post was not requesting advice on how to make the custom, only which color of pony to use.

Is it not okay to mention these things if they're part of our culture? No one said not to make one, we're just asking that it's respectful. Why is that not okay?

Creating a long thread about specific details and design isn't what the intention of the post was.  To keep the post on the original topic would be to discuss the color of the horse.

Neither the customs forum nor this thread is the place for this discussion. This is a thread requesting color advice. My warning stands and I will lock the thread if this discussion continues. If you would like to discuss it further you may pm me. - kkat

Seriously? There are First Nations people commenting in this thread and simply pointing out that they would find the addition of a war bonnet (among other things) offensive to their culture if used on a custom pony. Everyone's being extremely polite about it - it seems really...wrong to tell them they're not allowed to voice their opinions on this subject.
Personally, if I was making a custom and my idea had some elements that were offensive/racist I'd want to know so that I didn't create something hurtful.

I don't think it's off topic to ask someone - who asked for advice/opinions on a custom - to make sure to research the culture they're basing a custom off to ensure it's not hurtful to that culture.
Locking the thread because of a *polite* conversation on what is or isn't appropriate seems to be *really* dismissive of other people and cultures.

Although the original post has been removed now anyway, so...*shrug*
