Title: Calling All Artists! Arena Community Quilt *UPDATE WITH PICS!!!!*

As we all know, the MLP Arena is the most amazing place on the entire internet. :accomplished: Our site is particularly awesome because of our fabulous members and a dedicated volunteer staff team. The site may be free to all of us, but there are operation costs in order to keep the forums running smoothly. In order to keep our site ad-free and available to all, we sometimes hold auctions, raffles, and sales of MLP Arena merch. Inspired by a quilting thread in the Arts and Crafts Corral, I'd like your help making a community quilt to sell at the next Arena auction to raise money for our pony home!
How do you get in on the fun and make a difference to our pony community, you ask? Easy! :frolic:

PM me with a design proposal for your square. The mods will look at all entries and select the 12 we feel best represent our community! The artists with the winning designs will then have 6 weeks to make their design a reality and then ship the square to me for assembly and quilting.

Details:

:heart: All finished squares must be 18x18" (approximately 46x46cm) on cotton fabric. Remember that the edges of the square will be cut off by the seams, so leave about 1/2" on each side free of details. I don't want to chop off anyone's art!
:heart: Squares can be painted, applique, cross-stitched, embroidered, pieced, or any other method you choose. Be as creative as you want!
:heart: All generations are welcome and encouraged! You are also welcome to use the Arena mascot pony.
:heart: PM your entries to ZennaBug before midnight on August 31st.
:heart: Winning artists will have 6 weeks to make their design a reality before shipping their squares to ZennaBug.
:heart: The finished quilt will be available to purchase in our next Arena auction and all proceeds will go towards the operation costs of our site.

That's the best part, you don't need to know how to quilt in order to enter! :) As ZennaBug mentioned, there's a wide variety of possible techniques and even though most of them involve sewing, you can always just use fabric paints to create your square if sewing is not your thing.

I'm hoping to get submissions in lots of different media with lots of different ponies. This is such a diverse community and I would love this quilt to represent that diversity. :)

Post by: ZennaBug on August 14, 2014, 08:24:18 PM: Tip for anyone entering: wash and dry the fabric before you cut it to size and paint (or whatever medium you choose). That way it shrinks BEFORE being added to a quilt. It will prevent future warping. :)

Post by: ZennaBug on August 17, 2014, 08:10:21 PM: Another good point brought to my attention via PM: when you sew, about 1/4-1/2 inch on each side will disappear into the margins of the quilt. I'll be updating the first post to reflect that. Please leave some wiggle room around the outside of your square so I don't end up chopping off the edges when I sew!

Also, the first post has been updated with a ref for the Arena's mascot pony. :)

I would be glad to give something a try. My life is bonkers though as well and the soonest I could have a sketch ready is probably this weekend.

I was worried about making the deadline so I passed on this(I have a lot going on in life right now, new responsibilities at work and a little less time for hobbies), but I would still love to help out with this, if you only need a couple more! The .5 margin is included in the 18". Don't leave it totally blank and white (if you're painting), but definitely don't let your design stray into that area. Does that make sense? Blend any backgrounds into that area, in case my seams aren't exactly half an inch all around. We don't want to see random white borders. But if a tail or something goes past the margin, it will likely be eaten up by the seams.

If everyone wants to post their designs, that is totally fine. I'm so excited to see what everyone makes! :) :) :)

I'm hoping to find the time to dye my own fabric for borders and the rest of the quilt, so I suspect it will be pretty rainbow. :P Once the squares are in, I am going to arrange them in a way that I think highlights each one best. So colors, design, and materials will all be taken into consideration.

That way I get all the colors I want. Plus it will look cook. Plus it will be fun. I am debating tie dying the backing when the rest is assembled, but I will have to see how it all looks. I don't want it to be overwhelming lol.

I have colours that I'm sure are right but I'm starting to doubt myself... I'm going cheap and hoping that I don't have to buy fabric, if I don't have the right colour I'm hoping to beg off my friends for scraps.

Update: I have 4 ponies to find matching fabric for, G1 Firefly, G2 Ivy, G3 Pinkie Pie and G4 Twilight Sparkle. I found some plain cotton for Firefly and found some satin and silk in Ivy and Twilight Sparkles' colours. What I'm not sure of is if I should use those 'fancy' fabrics or should I go hunting for cotton in the right colours?

What do you guys think? Fancy fabric or go find some normal basic cotton? I've never made a quilt before so I'd like advice please.

As for your fabric choice, I think the satin would look really pretty with the cotton, plus, it would really make your square unique! Though, as long as all of the ponies are made with the same type of fabric, whether it's cotton or satin, than I think it will look wonderful. One more thought, depending on the size of your ponies, it might be better to use cotton, because on a large pony, the satin might pick or become pilled easily from washing and regular use. Although it really depends on how the winner of the auction decides to use their quilt. If they decide to just hang it, than you wouldn't have to worry, but if they're going to use it, then that might be something to think about.

I usually like uniformity so the same fabrics would be great but then if I go the different route then it could either look like a complete mess or well done... tough decision.

However, I'm using patterned cotton - it has a background color and then patterns over it. Pretty typical quilting fare. I totally raided the "fat quarters" section at the fabric store. :cool:

This means I'm almost at the sewing stage!! Yippe!! I now have to go scrounge up the templates I photocopied (the wind might have blown them all over the show - I just hope they haven't ended up outside).

Since Pinkie is so monochrome, I think it might be nice to add in a few shades of pink to her hair. Kind of like Posey's hair in your sig, maybe?

ETA: Bought the fabrics! Now to finally draw the patterns and so on...

ETA2: Pattern drawn! Now cutting and hopefully sewing on Wednesday!

ETA:3 Almost forgot to wash the fabrics argh! The fabrics are in the washing machine right now and I'll cut them tomorrow.

Post by: pony_magick on November 10, 2014, 03:40:26 PM: I have solved my Pinkie problem - I shall leave her hair the way it is and colour her body darker. I photos I've seen of the actual pony led me to believe that her body is darker than her hair (plus it fixes/covers the horrible way I drew in her nose and mouth).

I'll be doing more painting this evening and finding a suitable background colour out of my spare fabric (which might just end up being white or a natural colour as they won't clash with the ponies and logos). Hopefully expect more progress photos tonight or tomorrow.

Have a look at my square. See how the pony has no symbols? But, she is the Arena pony, and my original design had her full detailed symbols. I'm planning to paint on her symbol with fabric paint (way too detailed to applique!). Now I'm wondering if that will make it too busy? In addition to the pony, there are also 4 hearts, one in each corner of the square (too lazy to take new photo). What do you think? Maybe I'm crazy to even consider it, maybe I just fear commitment, lol XD I'm pretty confident in my ability to paint it well and accurately. But once I paint on it, it is final, so I thought I'd see if you all had some thoughts!

I wish! My grandma made that quilt. She dyed all the fabric herself and when I was visiting, I saw it and claimed it lol. I then painted my bedroom to match it and proceeded to send her pictures of blue and purple things until she sent it to me! XD It's gorgeous with a cozy fleece backing. She's an amazing quilter and she's the one who taught me to sew. :)

Post by: ZennaBug on July 14, 2015, 05:53:05 PM: Sorry, guys; it's still on hold. In April, we had to start preparing for a big move. I wrapped up both of my jobs, we packed up everything we own into storage, stayed with my in laws for two weeks, and then drove across the country to Indiana last month. The house is 115 years old and was in terrible shape, so we've been working non stop every day and I've only just been able to start doing a few fun things in the past week. I've been pretty much non existent on the forums. I'm still planning on dying the fabric and will probably get all the dyes out in August (we still have a lot of work to do in the bathroom, mudroom, and yard). I have all of the squares in my grandma's basement (she lives next door to the new house and has a HUGE sewing workshop in her basement) and haven't forgotten about you all! I feel badly that everyone got their squares to me on time and I've been so slow. *hides*

The assembly itself should be pretty quick. I'm planing to machine quilt around each square and then I'll probably do some hand quilting within the squares to make sure that the batting won't slip around. That bit might take a little more time, but I think it will really add a lot to the overall look and functionality of the quilt.

Aside from the move and then fixing up my house, I found myself in the position of breadwinner but also the housewife. I literally spent all of my time working, cooking, or cleaning and never had a moment to so much as sit and read, let alone sew. I finally got divorced in March (this is a cause for GREAT celebration for me), had to deal with lots of paperwork and phone calls, and spent some time working 7 days a week. But today I finally had a chance to work on the poor quilt! I assembled the whole face and attached it to the backing! It's super cute and I am hoping to finish the quilting in the next couple of days, because life will be getting even CRAZIER soon. Stay tuned for final photos in the next few days!

I abandoned the original plan of dying fabrics because I found this insanely cute pastel cloud and star fabric at my grandma's house. So here were all the pieces cut out and placed, after making sure that all of the squares were exactly 18"

But since my divorce in March, life has taken a complete turn for the better in every possible way. I haven't been this happy in as long as I can remember. :) Hopefully soon, life might calm down enough that I can be active on the forums again. I've missed my Arena time!

I finished the quilt today! I just had to hand sew up the bottom where I had left it open after turning last night and then do the quilting. I'm really happy with the finished quilt! And I did all the sewing at my grandma's house (even though my sewing machine is actually pretty great now that she got it all fixed for me), so I got to hang out with her for the day too. Win-win!

Thank you guys for all being so patient with me! I love all of the squares and I think they make a great set. Each one is different and they still go together well. I think it really represents the diversity of our community well and I hope that you like the finished product!
