As promised, here a few updated photos of my cleaned up little additions! I didn't take photos of all of them yet, but they're all now cleaned and combed.

Starcatcher's hair and symbol are much more of a vibrant pink in person. I'll have to try her again in better light, I think. But I was just so pleased with how clean and pretty she looks now.

Kimono has a few flyaway glitter strands in her hair but overall I think she looks much better now.

Applejack has one very small scratch at the edge of her symbol. She was very dirty so I'm pleased that there was only one scratch under all that grime. This is the direction her mane naturally wanted to fall. I wasn't sure if I should wet it and force it to dry in the other direction, because I mostly see ponies with their manes on the opposite side of their body to their symbols. In the end I decided to just go with how the hair naturally wanted to fall and add some visual variety to my herd. (Same thing with Starcatcher.)

True to her name, I think Minty came out of spa day looking the mintiest of all of the ponies.

I just don't have room, so I wouldn't seek her out.

Wow! Great finds! I think the schoolhouse is my favorite. I just love when someone is selling their childhood toys and gets to see them go to a good home.

I don't really have space for one, so I wouldn't go out of my way to seek her out. If I happened across one, I might make room.

Thanks, Leave a Whisper! I look forward to the day when I can more quickly identify ponies. The only G3s I instantly identified in person were Minty, McDonalds Minty, and Applejack.

I'll be honest, I have a hard time with G4 because they are different from the G1s I grew up with. They all seem small to me, so I just sort of mentally categorize them all interchangeably as "probably McDonalds". So seeing that most of the Twilight Sparkles from this lot are actually McDonalds does make me feel better about my categorization skills.

I will definitely post some photos of them after they have a pony spa day! I think most of them will come clean with ArmorAll wipes and very little scrubbing and then I'll just need to do all their hair which is the fun part.

A friend of mine found out that I was collecting ponies and told me I could have her daughter's old ponies that were just sitting in her storage shed. I'm pretty new to collecting so I'm not sure what most of them are but I'm looking forward to figuring it out and cleaning them up.

Pony Corral / Re: Naming children after ponies? (Especially sons?)
« on: April 29, 2018, 11:31:50 AM »
I understand giving a kid a name partially inspired by something that's important to the parents, but I also think it's important that it be a name you'd choose on its own merits. I wouldn't feel bad for a kid saying "Hi, I'm Lily," because it's a regular name. Or something like Lavender or Clover, which are slightly more unusual but not instantly identifiable as ponies. But I'd feel awful for a kid who had to go through life saying "Hi, I'm Rarity, nice to meet you. Rarity. No, not Verity. R-A-R-I-T-Y."

I also think that naming a baby after something the parents like should be done thoughtfully. For example the name Kylo shot up out of nowhere into the top 1000 name list for the U.S. after the Star Wars movie came out. I feel bad for those kids really. Kylo as a name only has one cultural association, Kylo Ren, so all their classmates will know "You're the bad guy!"

So I guess to sum up, my feeling is no on names that only have a single cultural association, and double no on names where that association is with a villain. But a name where it's not immediately obvious it's after a pony is fine by me, even if the name is uncommon.

Pony Corral / Re: Where is everyone finding these amazing pony hauls?!

In my area of the U.S. I've had slightly better luck with secondhand stores in lower population areas. For example there are two Goodwill stores within twelve miles of my house. The one closest to me is where I found several bags of ponies for $2.99 apiece and at other times I've found many things for my other collections as well as a lot of clothes in great condition for my nieces. On the other hand if I go to the one in the next town over which is a bigger town, it's always totally picked over and I rarely find anything of value. Any "good" clothes brands as well as any toys that might be worth something are snapped up by resellers before I'd ever get a chance.

On the other hand I do find that garage sales tend to be a bit better in the bigger town, just because there are more of them so there are more chances for my collectibles to be at any given sale.

The biggest thing I think that makes a difference is to pop into the shops as often as possible, even if I just have a few minutes to glance over the toys. That way I'm more likely to be the one to see something good shortly after it's been put on the shelf. Also in the summer people dump their garage sale leftovers at the thrift store afterward, so even if I don't have a chance to go all over creation on Saturday morning I might find a few things at the thrift store over the next week.

As for how things have changed in recent years, I do see fewer vintage toys these days. When I first started I found lots of toys from so many lines, and for a while in the early 00s I was the reseller buying up the good stuff to sell online. Now it's been years since I've seen a My Buddy or Teddy Ruxpin or an old style Fisher Price Little People set in the wild, and dolls for my collection turn up much more rarely. It makes sense because the ones who had those toys and wanted them gone mostly sold them years ago, so the people who still have them either who want to keep them or are collectors who want to make back what they paid.

Pony Corral / Re: Pony Stories!

As a kid I saved up my allowance and bought a So Soft Magic Star. She was my special prized pony that I bought with my own money and I rarely played with her and certainly never let my sister play with her.

Fast forward to five years ago, my sister now has two daughters. She'd given her childhood ponies to her older daughter who was really selfish with them. I got out my ponies and gave them to her younger daughter who was about three at the time, so both girls would have ponies to play with. So they took the ponies home and my sister held up Magic Star and said, "Oh, I love this pony! I was so jealous of her and I was never allowed to touch her!"

And my little niece, three years old, looked her right in the eye and said "You're still not allowed to touch her," and took Magic Star out of her mom's hand and put her up on top of her dresser.

I laughed so hard when I heard this story. My poor sister, all these years later and she's still never had a SS pony of her own.

I haven't found a pony with tail rust yet so I guess I never really thought about it. I think my reaction would mostly be "Ew, gross!"

My biggest "Why though?" is the ones that some long ago kid has colored "makeup" onto. So it'll be a totally normal looking toy except for garish pink marker all over the lips and maybe some blue on the eyelids. My childhood toys were well played with, but I tried my best to take care of them and would never, ever have colored or drawn on my toys.
