Title: Story behind your username!
Post by: SilverHorsey on October 14, 2017, 09:23:28 AM
I am pretty sure this kind of topic has existed, but it was a long time ago, so I made a new one yay!

Post here the stories behind your usernames! How did you come up with it? What inspired it? What does it mean?

I bet people think that behind my username is a 13 year-old die-hard G4 fan, who had no idea about the existence of other generations before coming here and has horrible spelling mistakes XD But actually I am a young adult and this name was created years ago when I joined this community and yes, at that time I was that little die hard fan, but I knew about older generations and G3 was still at the bottom of my heart, though I fangirled over G4 at that time. And soooo that's where this name came from and it's still here. I am actually considering changing it.

The meaning of my username is kind of obscure, so much so that I put it in my profile.

It is/was (I don't know if it is still used, maybe in Europe, I don't know) a term used in 18th century and thereabouts for ensembles of woodwind and some brass instrument players.

Once I found the term, I was overjoyed, finally a perfect username for me to describe my love for all woodwind and brass instruments! Sadly, that definition of the term is very obscure, and people in general just think it's a spelling of "Harmony".

Leave a Whisper. I was reading a fanfic and came across the phrase: leave a whisper and nothing more. It means to come and go without a trace. I liked it so much that I chose to use it as my name, even though I'm about as stealthy and inconspicuous as a drunk rhino. Haha!

When I was getting back in to ponies as an adult and found the Trading Post I couldn't decide on which pony to use as a username. I decided to pick Ponyfan since I am a fan of ponies. :)

My username technically comes from a completely awful nu-metal band; in the absence of ideas, I'd decided to call my ponysona 'Taproot' for a bit of a joke (in the midst of a cringe-worthy and very immature 'irony phase'...) and suffice to say now I am regretting it with a vengeance. XD
I have been pondering changing my username for quite some time, it's just a matter of deciding on something better.

Heh, mine's a nickname for "Carrie" which is a name I used to use on the internet.. I go by Mew nowadays, but Carrehz stuck as my go-to username. Helps that it's never taken XD

Glitterball because I love disco, funk and generally anything glam & sparkly!
I also collect vintage (rhinestone) costume jewellery, so it all ties in together!
When ever I visit a flea market / boot sale / charity store, it is always with a bee-line to the jewellery and toy sections  :P

Mine would be from when I was high school, my mom bought me a new pair of converse shoes. With loving Pokemon as much as I do I took Sharpie pens and drew pikachu's face on the tips. (In school I thought that was coolest thing)
My friend saw them and went "Haha its pikashoes!" I loved the name so much I've used to for almost everything.

Gaaah please don't change it, every time I see a post from you I get "Again & Again" stuck in my head (Taproot's only decent song). I love that song and it usually replaces the theme tune to Blaze and the Monster Machines or Teletubbies or *shudders* Peppa Pig. (The joys of being a stay at home Mum.)

For a while I went by my real name, then that changed to Pinkamena when my ex started stalking me again. He got over that though (thank you, new girlfriends) so last year (earlier this year? I can't remember) I changed it to Gingerbread as she is my favourite pony next to Bow Tie and Cotton Candy. And I have a large Twinkle Eye army. :D

OMG thats one of my favourite books, need to find out which rabbit it is (I only ever read it in german, so no idea which one it is :))

I love all your explanations <3 Its so cool to read that all!
Harmonie btw is also the german word for harmony <3 and its also the german word for what you described, thats cool :D

So, my own username... Einhornbaby is no official german word I think but you can translate it to "baby unicorn". I go by that name since 2001 +/-.

I had made up a whole bunch of my own big brother ponies, especially Pegasus and unicorn since none exsisted, and I picked Gator (green pegasus with two blue alligators symbol) as my username and avatar.

Post by: BlackCurtains on October 14, 2017, 05:14:18 PM
I've been BlackCurtains (with or without a space) online since 1997. Back then my favorite band was Megadeth and I played the album Youthanasia on repeat constantly.

One of the songs on it is Black Curtains.

Interestingly, in 2004 a french metal band formed and called themselves Black Curtains. I had claimed the name almost everywhere, but when social media started to get really big, we were in competition. They dissolved in 2011 and despite my attempts, they refuse to let go of the name.

I'm not a fan of Megadeth anymore (Dave went off the deep end yeeeeears ago), but I still listen to the old stuff - everything up to Risk, basically.

I have thought about changing... but this name is so established. I mean, there are people who call me BC in real life. So instead I just have an alter ego of sorts, and use that name on sites I don't want affiliated with "BlackCurtains"  ^^;

Post by: Beldarna on October 15, 2017, 12:30:01 AM
Beldarna was a character I created for a story when I was around 11, 12 years old. She was based on me but was strongminded, independent and pretty much a halfgod in anything but name and I liked her so much so all my short stories came to be about her. I built an entire universe for her and her friends and some day I might get it down in writing as much is just in my head today. The name was pretty much stolen from Beldaran in the Belgariad by Eddings, I just rewrote it a bit ;). When I became older and started to break away from my old, not so nice, friends, and find out who i am online I took the name for myself as I needed her strength and courage. It has been with me ever since.

When I first joined the MLP community, many moons ago, I decided it was time for a new username. I happened to think about the Moomins. Some of you will be familiar with them, especially those of you from Nordic countries or Germany, where they're very popular.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moomins

I remembered listening to the audioplays and watching the cartoons as a child and being charmed by their stories, which sometimes were everyday experiences and sometimes magical and exciting.

I thought Little My would be a good username (she's a fiery impish creature - small, but not to be overlooked), but that was taken, so I went for Snork Maiden instead. She doesn't fit my character 100%, for she's a little vain and thinks a lot about her appearance (which I don't), but she can also be very brave if she has to be, and she's fiercely loyal to her friends (which I am).

Post by: Broken Irishwoman on October 15, 2017, 09:13:31 AM
Oh, I enjoy reading all these! :D

I changed mine recently (I used to be Regenveertje, which is the Dutch name for D'nW Cuddles (childhood pony), which doesn't make sense because Regenveertje translates to Rainfeather).

I chose this name because I am from Irish descent. I was born in The Netherlands, but my father's side is Irish; my grandfather danced a perfect jig, Gaelic was his mother tongue, you get they idea. I feel more Irish than anything else (especially because of my nature, and that's not always a good thing XD ), even though I've never been to Ireland. So it speaks for itself that I love Irish music very much. Anyone who enjoys Irish music just as much as I do, must have noticed that they are always singing about "broken Irishmen"... When I was listening to one of these songs again, I realised that I have so many faults, and I that break down so frequently (and get back up just as frequently, important detail!) that I am probably even more Irish than I thought.

...And the name was born. I wear it with pride. visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Contrary to what it may seem, my username is not MLP inspired. My favorite Marvel character growing up was Polaris. I didn't want to just take that name, so I used the nickname for the star Polaris which is the North Star. 3184 is the day and year I was born (10/31/84).

I don't exactly remember how my name got to be mewtwofan1, but when I was creating a Roblox account around...I think 2011? Yeah. About there. I was just starting to get obsessed with Pokemon, and I LOVE mewtwo. No pokemon is as awesome as a genetic abomination that proves our lord and saviour arceus is dead? So that was m Roblox name, and still is. Then it just became a standard online name for me. My minecraft name is also mewtwofan1. So when I came onto the arena, I think it was just habit. And I didn't want an overly pony name. Mewtwofan1 is me, and that's how it's always been and always shall be.

I was messing around online one night with my friends at college.  I was the only one of my friends with their own computer, so Friday/Saturday nights looking random stuff online in my room was a popular activity.   It was close to Easter, and I was always a bit obsessed with Marshmallow Peeps, so I suggested we look up Peeps online.  I found the official Peeps website, and they had a thing where you could send a Peep ecard to someone.  It being the early days of the internet, I thought that was the most amazing thing ever!  You had to make an account to do it, and pick a username. I tried all my usual names, but they were all taken. Peeps were more popular than I thought I guess.  I don't like names with a bunch of numbers, so I started putting in anything I could come up with.  Goddessofpeep was the one that got through:p

I quickly discovered that it was a pretty unique name online, so I kept it.

I'm still obsessed with Peeps:p

That's the first time I'm hearing that one. But wouldn't it be funny, and all MLP-like to end up being given a name that would eventually turn out so closely related to your passion?

Harmonie btw is also the german word for harmony <3 and its also the german word for what you described, thats cool :D

Hm... Yeah, I don't speak German, so I do need to be careful. I came upon the term while reading a history book on the bassoon. I had never heard of it before.

I looked it back up in my book (yay for e-Books with that search function) and the term was very much associated with France, too. It looks like it originates from sometime in the Baroque era which is earlier than I thought.

Way back when I joined in 09 I had recently gotten back into Transformers,Supernatural, and you guessed it MLP. Two of the three were throwbacks to my childhood and the other a recent favorite TV show of mine. Shout out to my BFF for introducing it to me. Sky Rocket was one of the ponies I wanted but never owned when I was a kid. Her coloring always reminded me of Optimus Prime so I wanted to use the name in some way. The "Sammie" part is a double cross over nod. For Sam Witwicky from Transformers and Sam Winchester from SPN.
The quote in my avatar is from SPN but could fit into Transformers. Also my nickname is Sam so it all works.

Shout out to the friendly MLP member who during a newbie swap sent me not one but both versions of Sky Rocket. :newpony:  :lovey: TE Sky Rocket hangs out with my Transformers collection specifically Optimus.

I don't really remember what username I went by back in the mid 90's but probably something simple like Tigerlilja... When I discovered the MLPTP I had recently acquired Tex and Steamer and I loved them to bits so my username became Steamer_Tex.

Me and a friend kept making up stories with out ponies for quite some time and I guess I took the name TornadoLovesMelody after loving Tornado for quite some time and only listening to the name Melody (I hated my own name at the time) . I didn't like the sound of MelodyLovesTornado and in the stories Tornado always loved Melody anyway so ..there you have it :P
When it comes to signing cards though, I bitterly regret taking that name :P Way too long.

HAHA YES I do!!!

My Arena name is also from the Pony Name Registry, except that it's my Ex-Girlfriend's favorite pony.  We were looking at the site one day and turns out, we had both registered at some point as kids, and our "baby pony names" were next to each other on the same screen ---" it was a SIGN!"  *ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh parting sunny clouds aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah*

Anyway, years have gone by and I still think fondly of her, but I don't think she's into ponies anymore.  All the ponies she gave me, I smile when I see my DD playing with them...  I hope she's doing well but yeah.... times pass and reality continues...

I went through a phase as a teenager of really liking the name 'Noa', which I kind of used as a feminine version of 'Noah'. I used to use that everywhere. It was taken when I tried to create an AOL email one day, so I stuck on the first 3 letters of my name (Sara) and Noasar was born!

People seem to think it says 'No Asar' though and ask me what 'asar' means 😂

Stormness is a nickname that started with my now hubby and grew from there. For some bizarre reason it's taken on lots of sites, so I added the underscore 1, and that's always been available. Sometimes I'm Storm__Warning, as it's my gaming handle.

In real life, if I'm in a hurry, I'll sign off notes with a lightning bolt orientated like an 'S', and everyone knows who that is, because I've done it since I was a kid.

I grew up with g3, and pinkie pie was one of my favourite characters. Back in 2007 there was also a online trend (at least in my area) to use double letters and numbers in usernames. Many of my friends were doing it. I invented my username was piinkypiie back then. Since g4 came out I love the character development of Pinkie and I think her character matches mine a little. So when I joined the arena, of course I used piinkypiie as my username.

Post by: SourdoughStomper on December 05, 2017, 09:53:48 AM
Sourdough Stompers was the name of my square dancing group in Whitehorse, Yukon. I did learn to square dance, but having been nearly two decades since I've done it now, I have forgotten 99% of the maneuvers.  Don't know if the group still exists. Square dancing isn't much of a thing these days. I wonder if they ever found out I pinched their name for an online forum?

"Sourdough" is a Yukon word for gold hunters back in the Klondike gold rush. The seasoned stampeders usually carried sourdough bacteria/starter with them so they could make bread with it. Gotta survive those harsh winters. Apparently, you could earn the title if you survived your first Arctic winter. Until then, you were known as a Cheechako.

The irony now is that I gave up eating wheat and all grains about 6-7 years ago, so you can also picture me as someone one who is stomping the crud out of bread products. XD I might have to get someone to draw that for me someday.

After I joined, I designed a character based on the name. I made him male, because Stomper doesn't sound all that feminine. Perhaps he can be considered my first persona, but he doesn't really represent me. He represents the Yukon more than me. The Yukon and I parted ways nearly 11 years ago.

He's not a mere yellow color, but he is gold. His hair colors are the colors of the Yukon flag.

He has blue eyes to contrast with the gold. His symbol comes from the Yukon license plate. The little character is known as "Klondike Sam."

He is down to earth and humdrum, like myself, so he's an earth pony. (That applies to all my personas, now that I think about it.)

Shortly after I created him, I gave him a mate. Since I tend to love flower-related ponies, I picked a logical flower to represent a Yukon pony. Her name is Fireweed. It's the provincial flower, too. (You should try fireweed jelly. Interesting taste. It's probably good on sourdough bread. :P )

Nothing too flashy to explain about her. She just has fireweed colors. Pink is not really my favorite color though.

This thread is more about screen names than personas, although for me they are linked. I eventually made myself a true persona. That would be Sunflower. But I never changed my screen name as SourdoughStomper is very unique. Chief once told me that a quite a large number of search engines results would lead people to the Arena because they were looking up my name. So I've kept it all this time. There was a period of time when I would even refer to myself as Stomper in my head, even when I wasn't online. :P

If I ever did change it, it would probably DesertSunflower or SonoranArizonan. :sunny: :sunflora:

Mine's exceedingly unexciting - dates back to the days of the Pony Name Registry (anyone even old enough to recall it?) and my favourite pony was Sugarberry but that was already taken, so next best thing.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Mine is same as yours in this regard. Track back to 1997-8 and all the good names being taken ;) I'd never seen Taffeta as a pony in real life but I liked the name and I liked her colours, so I chose this. Technically on the PNR my sister was known as Munchy, and we'd trade as Taffeta and Munchy. I got Taffeta the pony not long after and she became one of my special ponies as she is so pretty...so it was a good choice. I prefer to drop the 'Princess', though. I'm not trying to be royalty ;)

So nothing exciting here. I kept the Taffeta name always in the pony community and also used it in the Jem community. Most of my long term online to real life friends call me Taff in real life even though they know my real name xD. I don't use it for any other community, though, or on ebay (where I am reide, and that is very obscure, it relates to a story I was writing at the time and it's the name of one of the characters...a lot of my other online names relate to writing in some way, particularly in fanfiction/etc).

I find it ironic that my pony persona is a pony that I never heard of as a child and which was never sold in the UK ;)

@Broken Irishwoman - I always thought Regenveertje was a cute name ;). Although it sounds like the Netherlands did a bit of set-name swapping o.O.

Ha, thanks! And yes, they did! When I first came online, I was very surprised to learn who the real Regenveertje was. :P

The meaning behind my name.

bright rabbit because I like the song bright eyes from watership down, and one, I like the number.

I like that song too. :)

Mine is my first name (obviously) plus a reference from the original MLP pilot (a.k.a.Rescue at Midnight Castle or Firefly's Adventure). It's a play on "horsefeathers," which I thought was actually pretty funny and clever. But later it was used in other MLP recordings as an expression of general surprise, as in, "Oh, ponyfeathers! Isn't this exciting?!" *snort* The writers clearly didn't get it and didn't try very hard to figure it out, which annoys me.

Mine's not too complicated. I love sparkly things,  and I love ponies. Therefore, I like ponies that sparkle.

My username was from my Deviantart username(my first time being on social website) and came up that name on October 2007 while I was attending my first year in college at Orlando.
Faery-Star is a seven pointed star(it's also known as Elven Star) but I changed the spelling based on European spelling into Faerie. It's also because I love faeries since I was a kid.
As for the letter 'V', it stands for Virgo since it's my horoscope and I added it there since Faerie-Star was already taken so I added the letter 'V' at the end.
Some people thought it meant a Roman Numeral five which is not.

The Bewilderbeast is the immense white alpha dragon from How to Train Your Dragon 2. I saw it and loved it so it became my go-to name when I don't want to use my Tumblr username. It's actually usually "Bewilderbeastie", but I made this account before I started adding the "ie" :P

Online most people only know me by my nickname Pixie, though, which comes from my first ever online username, pixie-rings (coincidentally still used on my ancient DA account and my Ao3). Pix for short, of course.

I first used the username Ringwraith#10 on the Nintendo forums back when the Nintendo forums were good. This was during the time the Lord of the Rings movies were in theaters. I guess I decided that I would be the tenth ringwraith? Anyway, I've been using this username on everything ever since -- no one else uses it, for the most part.

I chose a Japanese name from my favorite manga at the time, High School Debut. The heroine is Haruna and I think it's a pretty name. :)

Storybelle was the name of a G3 I liked from the cartoon. She never got a toy but I liked how she was the storyteller and had a cool library. Basically, it felt right and I've been Storybelle ever since.  ^.^
