Title: Ms. Peregrine's home for peculiar children
Post by: Tak on September 24, 2016, 05:48:48 PM
I've read two books so far and heard they have a movie of the first coming out. Has anyone else read it/them? Do you think they'll be able to make it a good movie? I'm also trying to decide if it will be too scary visually for my daughter. The monsters in the books were pretty creepy.

I haven't read the books, but the movie sure looks interesting!

I read the first book and thought it was alright. The movie looks intriguing. Not sure if I think it's go-to-the-theatre worthy, but I am interested.

What I really liked about the book is that the photos were real. They were antique. I'm also way too informed about both world wars since my dad is a history major. I like it when rl is incorporated into the story. Also, it was different. Like the night circus.

I have read part of the book. Life started happening and I got away from several books I was reading.

I've read all the books and really love them! I love the story, characters and the old photos.
My boyfriend read them and said that the "Hollows" seem to be uh ripped off from a manga that came out years ago, so that was kinda a bummer.

But otherwise I do really enjoy reading them!

I'm on the fence about the movie because:
a.) It looks like there is a different love interest.
b.) they switched some of the abilities around in the movie, and added scenes.(Like they don't go underwater on a pirate ship.)
c.) I really love Emma Blooms character but where the heck is she?!

I feel like they added some things to make the movie more interesting, so I'm really worried it will be like Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials, where the books are AMAZING, and then The Golden Compass kinda flopped.

I've read all of the books and love them all. I'm on the fence about the movie because they changed peculiarities around and changed ages on some of the children. Emma is no longer our resident fire guru. She now has Olive's ability of air and Olive is now the Fire guru. I wanna like no scratch that I wanna love this movie and I love Tim Burton but I just don't know why he had to change so much. Ransom Riggs did approve all the changes but a lot of the story revolves around Emma power. So I'm not 100% sure how it's going to go. I'm skeptical really.

This is definitely not a movie worth seeing in the theater then. I'll wait until Netflix has it. I really hate it when they change characters abilities and personalities. The movie "I am number four" did that. They could have had a huge series if they stayed true. Those books aren't as good as these imo. I only get maybe two movies in the theater a year so I like to make it worth it.

Silly side note. The last one we saw in theaters was minions. My daughter loves those crazy minions.

I heard Samuel Jackson plays a villain named Barron, and there's no Barron in the book.  Also movie trailer shows skeleton bad guys and scenes at a carnival, both of which aren't in the book.  And they do switch Emma's and Olive's powers.

I read the book recently and it started off good, but fell apart IMO. After the other bird arrived it felt rushed and confusing. There also was not enough explanation on their time travel or the way the loops work.
I am going to see the movie in hopes that they have simplified things a little!

It did need the second book. I just don't think it'll be worth the cost of theaters for us.

Things do become more clear in the second and third books. They're all a bit hazy now since I've finished them awhile back, but I think they're worth reading, even if its just for fun :)

Just got out of the movie theater.  All I'll say is this is Tim Burton's worst film ever.  Acting and story sucked.

I've not read the book so I can't speak for any changes they've made, but it was an ok movie. Perfect for a lazy monday evening with nothing else worth watching. Not the worst I've seen, but I was glad I didn't pay for it. It was apparent it came from a book as some things just happened without a thorough explanation and I wished for some more dept. Some bits of it I would say would be too scary for younger kids, like the hollows. I got Silent Hill meets Pans Labyrinth wibes. But then came a skeletonscene that was too silly to be taken seriously and several youngsters in the theatre laughed.. Once again Burton couldn't decide if it were a kids film or a young adult and it spoiled the entire plot. He used to be sooo good and nowadays it feels like he's lost it :(. Also, it might be because it's the same actress, but miss Peregrin felt too much like Vanessa Ives (Penny Dreadfull), with the hair, the cloths and the smirk. Bottom line is I would save the pennies and wait for it to hit the dvd-shelf and/or netflix.

Watched the Movie while it wasn't what I expected but I t was pretty good. Even the Hubby liked it so that's saying something.

It did however dive straight off in the second half and basically Burton forgot that the series is a trilogy and just finished the whole story in one movie. So I don't think we will see a sequel unless it does insanely well in the box office. And even if they do a sequel it will be because they wanna make more money. While it ended differently I really did like that ending.
