Pony Corral / G2 Moving Head?
« on: September 14, 2021, 08:43:12 PM »
Hey! I have a g2 Clever Clover (original release) I bought a while ago. I only have 2 gen 2 ponies for reference. The other day I was explaining to a friend about how some ponies turn their heads while others don't, and I noticed my Clever Clover turns his head and my Prince Firefly doesn't. I thought this was odd as (to my knowledge) ponies didn't intentionally have turning heads until some point during g3 (besides a couple of ponies who specifically made to have turning heads like the g1 baby ponies with the turning head mechanisms etc.).

The only time I know of these earlier ponies having turning heads is if someone had removed their head. Example: I have a baby ember whose head turns because the previous owner took her head off to clean her. The weird thing about that is the g1 ponies I have who have turning heads because they were cleaned have a specific way their heads turn. It's hard to describe, but the g1 heads move a lot more looser and feel like they'll more easily pop off. My Clever Clover's head feels super sturdy and is like a g3 whose head is meant to turn. And idk if that's because of the harder plastic or if he genuinely was meant to have a turning head.

So I guess my question is, do some g2 ponies have the head turning mechanism? Or did someone at some point take my Clever Clover's head off?

Pony Corral / Re: Pony Dreams (and maybe nightmares)

I can’t recall ever having a pony dream or nightmare, tbh. But op, your dream of the rusty ponies in the ocean touching you actually made me chuckle a bit- I’m sorry. I really don’t mean any offense, but the the thought of a pony lover and collector screaming for help as a bunch of ponies float around them just painted a humorous picture in my mind. Though I cannot relate to your fear, however- I do have my own, and can also only imagine that that would truly be terrifying for you, and I apologize that you have had such nightmares. Also, I was left to wonder how such ponies came to be in the ocean- even if it was a nightmare. What dreamscape d-bag is out there throwing plastic ponies in the ocean?

It's okay, my boyfriend and I poke fun at it all the time  Humors a nice way of coping.

I think it might've been because I watched a video on those Garfield phones that wash up on this one beach because the boat that was carrying them sunk? So in my head, my brain might've been like "Oh these ponies are from a shipment that crashed NEARLY 40 YEARS AGO but they're still washing up. Teehee have fun!"
My brain is like that sometimes  :P

Also here's the link to the Garfield phone beach if anyone is interested LOL : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47732553

Pony Corral / Pony Dreams (and maybe nightmares)
« on: May 16, 2020, 02:30:18 PM »
Hello everyone!! I had an idea for making this topic after I keep having a reoccurring dream with ponies. The basic gist of it is I walk into my local thrift store and find a whole bunch of ponies (primarily g1) in amazing condition! They all happen to be rarer ones too. Off the top of my head, I remember finding Night Glider and Munchy, but there were tonsss of others. I remember they even had a whole wall dedicated to mint in box ponies and they had a deal where if you bought 4 it would only cost $100. It was an amazing dream and every time I'm about to check them out and take them home I wake up and realize it was only a dream  :(
I've also had pony nightmares too. The most reoccurring one is where I'm swimming in the ocean and suddenly a bunch of g1 ponies wash up out of the water and are all moldy and rusty (I have submechanphobia, so this is terrifying to me, along with a minor fear of rust) and they keep touching me and crashing into me while I scream for help. I've also had another nightmare of finally finding my precious Mimic and someone (usually my mother) says she left her in the tub since she thought my Mimic was filthy, and when I find her in the tub she's just rusty....ughhhhh *shudders*
Most of my pony nightmares involve submerging and rust (sometimes mold) if you can't tell
Buuuuuuuuuuuuut moving on from my pony dreams and nightmares, do you guys also have dreams (or nightmares) about ponies? I'd be really interested to hear them  ^.^

Pony Corral / Re: Pony Life character profiles on Hasbro's website

I'm not really a fan of the whole chibi style in the first place, but there are some things I like on these designs.
The unique eye shapes are cute as with the feathered hooves.
I hate the single tooth though. It makes them look like toddlers IMO. I assume this is targeted to a lot younger demographic (similar to Teen Titans vs. TTG) so I guess it makes sense that they're making them more child-like? It's not my style though. The commercial models were cuter.
The mouth in the eyeball also kind of weird me out.
It's kind of uncanny in a way to see the ponies as super cartoonish. Even in g4 where they were arguably the most cartoony they've never been as over the top as this (minus any one off gags Pinkie might've done). They've always had this sort of aura of pretty and more um...elegant designs rather than cute and cartoony if that makes sense? Similar to how Barbie is a lot more elegant than a Bartz doll.
There's nothing wrong with a more cartoonish art style, but I feel it's offputting with the mane 6. I wish Hasbro would've just left g4 alone if they wanted to go with this more stylized route. That's also why I wasn't a fan of g3.5...
The toys are cute, however I think (?) they are bobbleheads? That's what the commercials make them out to be and if so, noooooo thank you. Doesn't appeal to me.

I know its weird to expect realism out of a show about multicolored ponies going to fight dragons or other monsters like that, but I just feel these are a bit too cartoonish? G4 was just the right amount of cartoony proportions IMO and this extra push is pushing it too hard for me.

Too long; Didn't Read: Not my cup of tea, too cartoonish designs for my tastes.

I like her design and think she's pretty...however I personally wouldn't go out of my way to get her. I think it's the pose? I don't really like the proportions on the older molds (except a few). I like the more cartoonish proportions, but that's just my opinion.
Lovely colors and concept, but just not for me  :)

Ooo, uh, so much for being optimistic  ^^;
I agree that the eye is too far down and a bit too small. It looks a bit jarring. The fact that it's some kind of weird amalgamation of a couple of gens smashed into one kind of weird me out. I also don't like painted on clothes and molded hair, but that's just my opinion.
I haven't seen the DnD ponies so I cant compare them unfortunately ^^;

Whenever we have gotten packages in the mail, we've always wiped it down with wet wipes and used anti-bacterial spray on the cardboard boxes in the garage. After that we throw the boxes away. Then, when we move the products inside, we do the same process of a wipe down with wipes and spray with the spray and let it sit for a while.
Wearing gloves is a good idea, just in case you do get it on your hands and forget to wash them. But generally, washing your hands a lot is very useful! And like other people have stated, the virus only stays on cardboard for a couple days, not 2 weeks. I'm not sure about ponies though...  ;)

I hope this helps, at the very least this is the basics you can to do prevent any spread hopefully. Best wishes with your new pony  :)

Actually wait. Can we get a Cutesaurus pose for the Power Ranger one?  :silly:

Considering there are lovely zombie pony customs, I think MLP can mix with a lot of things.

Those are customs. Personally I don't care for zombies. They're not my thing.

And I still think the MLP/Stranger Things and TF/Ghostbusters crossovers were weird choices. Came out cool looking, but still a strange choice.

To me, the Stranger Things crossover made sense because MLP was in the third season (I'm not sure any other seasons, I haven't rewatched it in a while) and ST kind of has a whole "Remember the 80's?" thing going for it. Seeing as MLP was already making a comeback with retro things, is a heavy 80's icon, and also was in that season, it at least makes sense to me. That's just my opinion though. I can understand how it can be confusing to some people though, especially to those who haven't seen ST.

-----

I wish there were more readily available 80's properties. In my opinion, it kind of just feels like the same ones come up over and over again. I guess maybe that's my problem with the crossover? Like it'd be cool to see MLP with a franchise we don't get to see too much, but as I said earlier it probably won't yield much monetary gain (or at least as much as they'd get with the more recognizable series).
Although the power rangers crossover is the one I'm most stoked for, I can totally see why people aren't as pumped for it. Like Power Rangers isn't technically an 80's series (it's an early 90's series) so it doesn't really fit with the theming of the set. Unless the set theme is like...retro heroes? I mean I think all the franchises have characters that can be considered heroes. That's just my crackpot theory though.  :P
Maybe it's too early for me to judge this set. I haven't seen the ponies so who knows how pretty they'll be? I don't know...It's hard to know what to think since we don't really have an idea of what to expect, we don't even know what style they're gonna do! (Basic Fun's molds vs. the retro molds) I'll keep my fingers crossed there will at least be one gem in this collection...(then I'll have a pony to look forward to!  ^.^ )

Pony Corral / Re: What pony do you think is bizarre?
« on: May 08, 2020, 08:18:49 PM »
The later years of G4 have a lot of gimmicks that make me go hmmm...
I think the worst offenders are:

The "silly face" Pinkie and Dash. Nightmare fuel!
The bead hair ponies
The ones with the waxy yarn hair
The magical scenes. Stare into your favorite pony's butt to see a magical world, kids!
And of course, the Pony Life's, that really stretch the criteria for what can be considered a pony

I also find the so-soft babies really weird, especially the duck-faced G4 ones.
And those early g4 plushies they sold at Target with the fluffy mohawk manes and muzzles that are ridiculously tiny, even by G4 standards.
And anything that talks and/or sings. I hated toys that made noise with a burning passion as a child, and even to this day, Sing N' Dance Pinkie Pie triggers my fight-or-flight response. Too uncanny valley for me!
I don't know what they were thinking with those mohawk ponies. They look rediculous

Want her  :inlove: On a quest to get every g3 pegasi and she's definitely a pretty gal. The only thing I don't really like is the raised symbol but I'm willing to get over it for her.  :P

Thank you for clarifying Leave a Whisper, I see what you mean by them being more horse like. I too wish for more horse like appearences (I also wish for more effort but it seems like Hasbro just can't be bothered in general)

I also hope basic fun is doing them, and that they are cute at least

I wish they'd have picked another 80s property rather than power rangers, Jem was a good idea.
What other 80s properties that Hasbro has access to would you want to see crossed over with MLP everyone?

I'll always have my dreams of a My Pretty Mermaids crossover no matter how unlikely it is  >_< I'm not sure what they'd do though? If they were gonna use Basic Fun then maybe that'd also be a great spot for Basic Fun to kick off a sea pony line.
Hmm, I think She-Ra would be cool but unfortunately, She-Ra is owned by Mattel
Strawberry shortcake would be cute, especially since (to my knowledge) she has her own horse. Or at least in the 2000s-ish era she had a horse (and it smelled lovely).
I just found out about a doll line called Rose Petal Place which would be cute, but again, licensing issues  :P

As a joke, imagine a Garfield or Troll dolls crossover  It'd be amusing but I don't think I'd want it...

The G4 Wedding Cadence is one of the most disconcerting ponies I've ever owned. She sings to herself and exclaims loudly about getting married, despite the fact it's not entirely clear who she's getting married to...

The weird delusionalness of it is literally the only reason I have kept her, mind you...because it's fun to occasionally make her babble.

The EQG Rainbow Rocks Pinkie is also a lot of fun. Makes you start, though, if you're not expecting it.

"I'm Pinkie Pie! Lalala..."

In the show, Princess Cadence gets married to Shining Armor. They even have a couple toy sets together. (Recently...or I guess uh a year or two ago? they also had a baby!) Maybe this will help your Cadence seem less weird, or you can still pretend she doesn't have a groom  , just thought you might want to know this  ^.^

No, you misunderstand me xD I know who she is meant to get married to, the point is they never made a large SA to go with her, so she babbles and sings happily to herself without a groom. And unless she's going to marry Celestia or Luna/NM, who I think she's related to, right...her choice is basically what, Chrysalis?

...You see my point...?

Although I really want the talking Chrysalis. Isn't it that one who says something like "comb my hair, minion"?

@IceCrystal, they're weird G1 (spinoff?) ponies from Venezuela who literally have a squeaker instead of a tail ;)
Maybe minion can be Chrysalis's nickname for Cadence
I see what you mean though. I just wasn't sure if you knew Cadence actually has a groom or not, my bad! XP

Pony Corral / Re: What ponies bring you joy?!

Mimic brings me a lot of joy despite the fact that I don't have her. It's the thought of my Mimic is out there waiting for me, and one day I'll find her and will be able to love her forever.
My Prince Firefly makes me very happy. He was my g2 grail and I got him as a gift from my mother. I love just looking at him and admiring how he looks.
All of the g3 pegasi make me happy, especially Mochanut (because of her cute tiny wings) and Silver Glow, just because her colors are beautiful to me.
In g4 Princess Luna makes me really happy.

On an semi-unrelated note, the talking Nightmare moon is super weird. I have her and Cadence and it's weird how many sayings they have that are on the same basis despite one being evil and one being good. I never thought I'd hear a villain say "I would love it if you styled my hair" or "My star barrettes are fabulous!". She also says really contradictory things. It's almost like they wanted to make a Luna but decided last minute to make it nightmare moon and added generic "evil cackling"...
EDIT: forgot to explain what I meant by contradictory things. She says she wants to light up the night sky yet the whole purpose of nightmare moon is she wants it to be night forever? Maybe she's just going to make the moon as bright as the sun idk

Crossing over FiM-style (unless "retro" refers to the Basic Fun ponies and not the new funky G3/G4 hybrid) with random popular franchises from the 80s and 90s instead of using ponies from the 80s and 90s. I hate to see it.

Power Rangers and Ghostbusters are even more baffling than Transformers. And look at all these franchises having largely male fanbases instead of doing a crossover with another girl property. Last grasp at securing some Brony money, I assume.

Edit: at least the Stranger Things Basic Fun AJ had some merit as MLP was referenced in season 3...

Good points. Its not fair that other 80s/90s franchises get a retro look but not MLP. Although modern PR doesn't seem to have changed much stylistically.

Its not like Hasbroken doesn't have any other girl franchises under their belt. A JatH, LPS and Moondreamers crossover with MLP would not be unwelcome. Especially if Basic Fun might be doing it.

It'd be fun if Hasbro did more crossovers with "girly" franchises (like, franchises were girls are the target demographic...of course all genders can like any franchise). I don't mind Transformers or Power Rangers, but the target audience is male so it really does feel like a brony cash grab...
Personally, I prefer my ponies to be pretty rather than cool. That's why I would want them to do a crossover with like LPS or My Pretty Mermaid (if they even still have the license to do that one  ). The Ghost Busters or Transformer pony will be cool, but I personally just prefer a pony that is pretty. I don't really think a pony in a ghostbuster suit is pretty, but that's my opinion. Besides, I don't even know what it'll look like so maybe it will be really pretty in all actuality.

I guess I'm frustrated in the fact that it's mostly boy aimed toys that get retro releases but not as many girl aimed toys. I think this is why if they did a crossover with a more girl aimed toy, it'd help bring back interest in that franchise. Everyone already likes transformers and power rangers, so why not give Moon Dreamers a chance?
Oh yeah, because Hasbro is scared it might not be profitable.

I wish that operating on what makes money wasn't the bottom line, but that's just how companies work. Why take a risk when you could play it safe?

We have had some resurgence in girl aimed toys making a comeback, such as the retro Polly Pocket stuff that was released. If they did well, maybe companies will start releasing other retro female aimed toys?

I don't know that's just my word vomit on this situation. I hope I made sense and didn't offend anyone. I tried to be as sensitive with this topic as I could. This is just my opinion and assumption on why we aren't getting as much retro girl aimed toys and I could be totally wrong. Also there's a difference between retro and revival, which is why I didn't mention She-Ra.   ^^;
