Title: G4 male pony brushables, yay or nay?
Post by: ShannonInPonyland on March 28, 2012, 05:43:12 PM
I feel like I'm always waiting for Hasbro to release a G4 male brushable (we'll just pretend that Shining Armor doesn't exist because lets be honest, he's a bit of a mess).
They've started releasing them in blind bags so my question is, do you think they will get around to making a few of them into cute little brushables?
Would you buy them? Which male ponies would you like to see be made into toys?
I would really like a Big Macintosh for my collection, I'm just sayin  ;)

I would totally buy a Bic Macintosh toy <3

I would also absolutely LOVE the Flim-Flam Brothers in toy form, but I doubt that'll happen xD

Whether you choose to acknowledge him or not, Shining Armor IS a G4 brushable boy. Future boys will probably be similar or identical, with how creative Hasbro is.

Shining Armor's toy structure and design looks a lot like Big Macintosh as it is, so I think he's inevitable. I love boy ponies so of course I'm all for G4 boys. Less excited about the troll hair.

So much yay. I don't care for Shining Armor's troll hair, but I'll deal with it if that's what I have to put up with to get some male ponies. :)

Yes, totally yes! Although the awful troll hair, which I've always considered unbrushable, kinda hurts my excitement for them quite a bit. I've always hated male toys with "fake" hair, especially when female characters have more normal-looking hair. It's not even about being able to brush it, I just think it looks weird and lazy.

What really throws me off about Shining Armor is the troll hair, so I hope if they start making male ponies they don't follow in that direction and at least give them normal hair  >_<

You know... you just can't please everyone... ;)

Personally... I think Shining Armor is a HUGE... HUGE step forward for Hasbro. Troll hair & conformation issues aside.... he's the first "regular line" boy pony in darn near 30 yrs! That ALONE is enough to be excited about!!! :cheer:

And honestly... while I will admit that his rump vs chest measurements are a bit off... look at it this way...

A. G4 ponies have been... "scaled" back from real "horses" quite a bit. In fact... I believe the change in their faces is really an effort to make them appear more human. And if that's the case... just look at the way MEN are built...

Large chest... smaller waist & hips.

Unlike women... large chest, small waist... and larger hips...

B. Look at his character design in the show...
Linking to the image... to avoid "spoilers". ;)

(Ok... so it's not Shining Armor... but there are very few good screen shots of him out there.... But Blueblood's conformation si pretty similar...)

(Tho his chest isn't quite as pronounced... and it's a bit harder to tell with that jacket on... Fancy Pants is also similar in build...)

I dunno... looks JUST like the toy to me...

Maybe... the toy's jawline is a bit... exaggerated... but I don't care! :frolic: he's white... he's a unicorn... and he's a HE!!!

Despite the flaws, I am super excited for Shining Armor's release.  I have every intention of buying him and Candence and I really hope they will release more boys in the future.  :)

Yay Hasbro!  This is totally a step in the right direction.  :)

I definitely want to see more boy ponies made.
However, I don't think Shining Armor's design resembles any of the other males too closely, least of all Big Mac.

Example: visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Their faces and bodies are completely different.  Big Mac is much more rounded and soft, Shining Armor is very angular, straight-backed and tiny waisted, just like his toy.  They could probably get away with making a Prince Blueblood out of the Shining Armor mold, as well as Fancy pants, but Big Mac?  Ehh...no.

I want them to make a Big Mac mold. :<  He would not look right at all in Shining Armor's mold.  But this is Hasbro we're talking about, I'm sure they'll put Big Mac in SA's mold.  Heck, they'd probably put Pipsqueak in SA's mold, complete with horn and everything.

As for male characters I'd like to see as brushable toys:

I wish they'd make him from a Big Brother mould. I know that's impossible though. What I'd really like is for boy pony moulds to have the hairy hooves again. It's just so cute. Especially for Big Mac, since he clearly has hairy hooves in the show!

Ohhh, I totally agree with you. The Big Brother mold is perfect for Big Mac. I like Big Mac's design because I love draft horses. I think Hasbro should make a Big Mac plushie. >.<;;

I like Shining Armor, I wouldn't mind seeing more boys from the same mold. I don't mind the hair either.
Tropical_Sunset wow I guess Shining and Big Mac's body type are quite different. I really hope there is a Big Mac toy someday. It seems he would need a different design to look more like him though.

At this point I'd be more surprised if they don't release a Big Mac with his own mold.  I would expect it to sell well among children as well, and not just all the bronies and collectors.

Would love to see at least a more generic mold released for some of the various backround male ponies and some toyline originals.  Doubt they'd do many, but I'm sure some will come with a third season.

Is someone suggesting we shouldnt get boy ponies! Oh my goodness *feeling faint*

Of course...brushables...yes for every pony...as many as possible...

If they have invested in a boy mould for Shining Armour...we will see it reused...its too expensive for HB not to reuse it

I don't mind the troll hair and I like the mould but I wish the tail was more ponyish, it sort of look likes a bunnytail at the time. And his "bib" looks weird, I will have to sew him a new attire. I would ofcourse love to see more boys, especially Big Macintosh!

To me it looks like the Shining Armor mold has been designed to work for as many characters as possible (similar to how the Cadence mold was designed to work for both her and Luna). Hasbro won't make a new mold unless absolutely, absolutely necessary, and maybe not even then...

I want to see Royal Guards more than anything (pegasus type, unicorn type and Luna type! :D), hopefully not with  painted on armor, but if it happens that's probably how it's going to be be. :/

Oh yeah, the "troll hair" looks awesome to me!

I'd love to see more male ponies! But have a feeling that they'll just be reusing Shining Armor's mould for all the future boys as well. All the girl ponies have pretty much the same body with only small differences so I'd imagine they'd follow the same pattern with male ponies too.  It's cheaper for them.

Yes to brushable boys!  I'm not big on the troll hair myself, but I kind of like the idea of using a different type of hair on the boys to really make them stand out.  And who knows, the troll hair might be nice once I start to play with it.

I would LOVE a Big Macintosh and a Braeburn!   :lovey:

Keep in mind that Hasbro does not always do things that make sense or seem profitable lol. There were at least 4 different G3's that were an entirely new mold and only used once. Baby Honoloo-lu, Baby Mochanut, etc.

It's possible Shining Armor will be the only pony used in that mold. Buuuut I'm going to guess yeah we'll be seeing more of that mold, depending on how Shining Armor sells.

I kind of feel like the only person who really doesn't care if boy ponies are made or not? But I was pretty excited about Shining Armour since I knew Hasbro making boys was a thing that would make a lot of people really happy. I kind of like the troll hair, but I think they should definitely make a few with normal hair as well... and I wouldn't mind seeing the troll hair on the girl ponies, I think it would be a lot better for DJ PON-3 than the regular hair she's going to have. A Rainbow Dash with that hair might be neat too?

my only concern with the troll hair is that well, they don't age well. things like to breed in them if you're not careful.

I'd be concerned with the hair growing super dry and frizzy, too. I don't mind the actual quality of the hair for boys- since you mold hair styles more easily and whatnot (still would prefer the same shiny slick quality that the girls have, though- anytime!!), but I don't like how it is done. It looks choppy, and short. What am I supposed to do with that? -.-

So glad there actually IS a boy, though! But I am not sure if I want to spend so much $$ for something of this quality. :S There should at least be more hair.....

I LOVE the brushables, and I would LOVE to see boys with hair like that.  However, I am in no way disappointed that they made them with the "troll hair."  I think it actually makes them look more distinguished from the females.

I would actually love to see them have maybe a less fragile form of softer hair (like the G1 watercolor baby sea ponies) that is rooted like the brushables.  My main concern for the hair now is its fragility.  It won't really hold up over time as well.

The troll hair has really taken the shine off Shining Armor for me . . . At first I figured, hey, no problem, I could just rehair him, but now it sounds like he won't have hair plugs like a normal pony would, just a groove?       Major disappointment.

I'm not sure how I feel about the mold itself.  It just looks kind of odd, and depressed.

I really want to see the royal guards and Big Mac. Thunderlane also had a really nice design.

Hopefully they'll do different molds for the earth and pegasus ponies so we'll get a variety of body shapes. The pegasi could have the lighter generic male build, the earth ponies could be in Big Mac's draft style, and then we'd have the regal unicorns in Shining Armor's mold. It'd give even more variety if they could mix'n'match the heads.

Would love brushable boy ponies! Now that Hasbro's made the mould I'll bet they'll be reusing it to their full advantage. With the blind bag boys, I'm convinced that introducing boy ponies is their intent. The idea appeals to us adult collectors, it appeals to the bronies (so they can customise to make their OCs, I'm guessing), we'll just have to see how well it appeals to little girls. I'm not fond of the troll hair myself, (it just doesn't look like hair to me) but it's something I can fix.

Gabumon, please to let us know how your experiment goes, but my instincts are telling me that troll hair would melt with that kind of heat. Maybe use the hair irons when they're just warming up / cooling down? Of course, if it's just a test subject try all kinds of heat, I would love to be proven wrong about my doubts :D

ETA: I would definitely buy Big Mac, *Caramel*, BlueBlood and any type of Royal Guard! Plus original Hasbro designs because they'll be so cute.

Hmmm... I managed to get a troll in among a bag of toys ages ago that is still in my basement toy box somewhere.  Perhaps I'll have to give it a go... if I can ever find the time, haha.

I was actually looking for 'troll hair' to buy to use for some baby ponies I made... couldn't find a thing.  It'd be perfect for them if you think of it.  Newborns have this 'peach fuzz' type hair to begin with.
