Urm, yep, just came to post :P lol

Tis me....

Only thing is, it's sort of mixed feelings for me about it. Remember the post here with someone called Natasha asking for people to be interviewed for a magazine? Well I ended up doing it and it was such fun getting ready for it, taking pics, and talking ponies with the journalist. But I didn't even know it was published! Something she said gave me the impression I'd get to give the ok or not when it went out and who to. Maybe I should have asked more questions? Maybe I don't know about these things so she should have prepared me?

Anyways, long story short, me in my niavity thought "newspaper" not online article! I don't care what people think about me AT.ALL. but things people say are a bit different, y'know? And there are some HARSH comments on there from some complete douchebags and I've just been sat crying at work for the last hour! I wasn't expecting the internet and I'm not ok with it....

I know you guys will appreciate it though and that's what matters, what you guys here think of it and my friends and family, not those idiots on the comments. So, enjoy, and I will forget those people and just think about the good part of it eh?

(can I have a hug please??)

Well, it was a good article, and most of the comments are kind.  I think the Daily Mail has a wide demographic, including grumpy old people (ha), so somebody commenting on how people are "infantile" as "young adult" is b.s....what about all the men with their "man caves" or action figures?!!  Sounds to me like they're just jealous you have something that makes you happy.  And joke's on them.. if you needed quick cash, you could sell a lot of those to make it.

Yeah I know, most people today have said to me that most of the people who comment are the ones with bad stuff to say and the good ones don't always bother. I'm ok now, it was just such a shock! I didn't even know it had been published, I found out from someone at work! Lol! But yeah, those people who said bad stuff can bite me :P I love my ponies, my friends (including all of you here!) think it's great and so does my family so.... :silly:

What I wanted this to be:

"Hey guys! Look I'm in the paper with my ponies" :D *beams*
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2118633/My-Little-Ponys-biggest-fan-Accounts-assistant-dedicated-Pony-Room-1-000-strong-collection-worth-20-000-partner-keen.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2118633/My-Little-Ponys-biggest-fan-Accounts-assistant-dedicated-Pony-Room-1-000-strong-collection-worth-20-000-partner-keen.html) "

(but don't believe everything you read in the paper! I never said they were worth £20k and I'm a Mrs not a Miss :P :silly: LOL)

I think it's awesome, and the article certainly was positive! As for those negative comments, they also all have negative ratings, so it looks like most readers don't agree with them either!

I'd contact the editor or whoever interviewed you for the article and let them know you would have liked to have been told when the article about you came out and where to read it. They may have just forgotten to tell you (happened to me with an article I actually wrote!)

Yeah, it is a very nice article, methinks! I rarely read reader comments on anything because I've (finally) learned it's mostly ignorant blowhards yelling at each other, or people who don't know how to sit on their hands and give it some*thought* before spouting off. But I did go through and give thumbs up and downs on the commenters on your article lol!! I don't get it. People collect all kinds of odd things, and many people collect toys. Why must people make assumptions and be so judgmental? *shakes head sadly*
But back to the good stuff-- what a nice article and now I, too, want to stay in your pony room! ( haha, you could probably make an enterprise out of that...)

I think the article was well done and my goodness - those pictures are amazing! I love your Skydancer army. And the picture of you as a little girl with your Dream Castle  made me smile - because I have a similar picture and I'm also holding a She-Ra horse too  *lol*

I think your room and all your ponies look awesome! You should be proud!

And as for the haters, they're only making themselves look stupid. You can't post anything online without someone writing something nasty - my mum was in the DM before for a story about her cancer and we still got abuse despite how you'd think people might leave a terminally ill woman alone o_O There are just some very nasty people in the world.

There really are aren't there?! I can't believe someone would be hateful towards someone in a cancer story!! OMG... :throw:

I am proud of my ponies though :D

You gotta wonder about the people who make such comments... if they'd actually say it to your face... on most counts I very much doubt it ;)

*hug!* Don't let the haters get you down. I'm convinced some people spend all day doing nothing but making nasty comments online. They are idiots and not worth your time.

It was a nice story and your collection is great!

Just for reference for anyone who gets interviewed in the future...anything you say to or around a reporter can end up published anywhere (I am a journalist myself so I can speak to that)...and you don't usually get to see it before it runs. The good reporters will give you a call to check facts or quotes but won't send the whole thing before publication, as that's something reporters are trained not to do and usually companies won't allow them to do so (it was even in my contract at one job that I couldn't do that). They should let you know when it will run, though. If they get anything wrong you can ask for a correction too. :)

(PS- Just to make clear so I don't make anyone nervous, I'm just a collector who is a reporter, I'm not here trolling for stories or anything. I started collecting long before I started work professionally. XD )

I think congrats are in order to Sarah-Bee! I liked the article and the pictures are great! (I saw some white Celestias....) I wish we had a enough room for me to display our ponies!

The Daily Mail always has some haters and negativity in the comments but coupled with the article, they usually give me a few laughs.

Your collection is awesome, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! If it makes you feel any better, ponies aren't the only thing I collect, and I'm part of an entirely different set of collectors forums...I'm a biologist, and I have a cabinet filled with animal skulls.  You wanna talk about mean comments? Try being a girl with a wall of dead things. ;) (...who also has a wall of pony. the combo goes over REALLY well, Lol!).

Haters gonna hate, no matter what you do. Its important to you and thats all that matters. :)

Twisting the words or what?
Title: Re: MLP news
Post by: Sarah-Bee on March 22, 2012, 11:42:10 AM
zzzova, yep, just a bit!!!

I've heard from Natasha (the journalist who contacted me) and she has apologised for crossed wires about some of this and the online thing. She said it shouldn't go anywhere else online which is good! She said it may be in actual papers tomorrow which is fine cos even if they get it wrong (like the comment above!) then at least I don't have to read a hundred crappy comments! *sigh* What HAVE I got myself into this time?! Should be my motto ;)

Anyhoo, there's talk of a magazine being interested which I would get to proof read before anything was published (I think that's where wires were crossed, cos I knew I'd be able to see magazine stuff before it was published so when she mentioned newspapers I didn't think that would be any different) so maybe we can get this back to what it was supposed to be to start with; a nice fun thing (and, um, ACCURATE :P lol)

Most of the comments on the Daily Mail article are rather nice!! Especially the one pointing out that people spend well over 20k on alcohol and nobody blinks an eye.  As for The Sun... I'm sure you know because you're from  the UK (You're from Barnsley? I used to live in Wombwell!) that a lot of British tabloids are notorious for twisting stories... don't worry about it.

They called you "Wacky" for liking ponies?! And called your hubby "long-suffering"... I really dislike how they worded it. There's nothing wrong with ponies and I'm sure there's a ton of people on this very forum who have collections like yours. My collection will eventually get to that size some day, I imagine, but my boyfriend honestly doesn't seem to mind them! Your collection is absolutely wonderful and I don't think you should pay attention to what the "haters" say. Stay proud of those little ponies!! :)

That was actually really great, what you said definitely painted the hobby in a good light. They could have gone with someone who was really socially awkward and weird, and made it look like it was something for people who are basement dwellers, but you made the hobby look good. So, as a fellow collector, thanks for that!

Also, I giggled a bit at the part about your husband buying a Rapunzel. 99% of the people who read that are going to go 'What's a Rapunzel?', the 1% are going to go 'Whoa! That's one heck of a gift!'

As I read both the articles, I must say: The Sun were not after portraying toy collecting in a good light. It angers me very much how they set a negative focus on your hobby and using words like 'Wacky'. And hateful comments are just after bashing someone for being happy.
The original article is much better and I enjoyed reading it. People collect all sorts of things, and yours is certainly beautiful! A hobby that makes one happy is a very good thing!
And I had to giggle at the G2 picture and their comment about "Ridiculously long eyelashes" XD I must go investigate my beloved G2's now and see how their eyelashes are doing.

Just read through the articles, and the comments.... some of them are so disappointing but to be expected, I guess. Those people are just screaming for attention really, and they are the ones who are sad - either blighted by ignorance and arrogance, or who have completely lost their inner child. Maybe they never had one?

Lovely collection, Sarah-Bee, and kudos to you for weathering the storm. There are obviously a lot of people out there however who really did (genuinely) enjoy the article which is great - you may have created a whole heap more pony fans!  :)   Maybe they'll in turn discover this wonderful, supportive community we have here at the arena  :)   We all might be a little crazy in our own way, but at least we are getting a lot of enjoyment and fulfillment out of our hobby, something those sullen idiots who commented negatively in the article probably don't have a lot of in their lives.

i´ve read the Daily Mail article and I LOVED IT! I even got my husband to check it out and read the part about Alice Cooper. I think your collection is sooo amazing :) Was even thinking of posting it on my FB wall :) (but now I´d like to see if you´d be ok with that ^^ ).

I just can't believe that you´d take your time to do all this and then get all the bad stuff :(:( Well, I´ve posted a comment (which i never do) and downrated some of the trolls.

As for the sun article - no comment :S Yes, how dare you MAKE your husband buy you things you like for anniversaries! /facepalm of doom

I don't like the DM or the Sun (or any tabloids), but I actually think the DM article is appalling and full of mistakes and slurs while the Sun article is not so bad (unless they have edited it before I read it?).

  Some people are just. . .  ugh.

I thought the first article was lovely and you have a gorgeous collection to be proud of.  I am supremely jealous of some of the girls in your collection.  :)  But some people just have to make horrible comments because they really have nothing better to do.  You just kind of have to ignore them since there are a million things worse than collecting MLP.

The article from the Sun was a little annoying ("wacky?"  "obsession?") so I would just ignore them and stay proud of your hobby.   :accomplished:

I've been in the news before for one of my collections, so I know the kind of comments these people leave :silly:

Like you, I was a little upset at first (no tears, just a 'meh' feeling). But like others have said, you should ignore them. There are sadly many, many people out there jealous of anyone who is happy with their life, and they feel the need to try and bring everyone down to their level. The only people who need to grow up and get a life are those who like to mock others for being happy :)

And as for your collection, I love it! Everything is so neat and tidy. If only my Lion King room was the same! :silly:

Kudos for being brave enough to go through with the interview!  That alone is worth a cheer from the community.  Also, your collection is amazing!  I want to come jump in that pile of ponies!  :D

Nice going! I guess it's nice to make people aware of MLP collecting so that "closet" collectors don't have to feel ashamed of themselves.

Um, what? XD

Just ignore those dissing your collection. They do not understand that the reason of collecting these aren't because of their face value, but the therapeutic effects that one experience when collecting.

Just to help you out tho, I've pretty much went through all the comments and downvoted those dissing you. We pony lovers will show these trolls our true power. Pony-power!

Woo congrats.
Reading the article I was thinking 'I'm sure I know who this is,' partly because of the 'Alice Cooper' custom.
I like how there's plenty of nice comments on the article though, ignore the idiots on there. That's just the DM readers being DM readers.

I did like this comment though:
Quote
Why all the unkind comments? She is harming nobody with her collection, and has the money to buy them and the space to store them. How is it really any different from a woman collecting shoes or handbags that she never intends to use (that too is playing 'little girl dress up') or buying cigarettes and booze which is just money down the drain. I personally love My Little Pony, Care Bears and anything else cute and girly, but I also hold down a good job in the city because I am allowed my own personal interests outside of work!!!! And as for the pea brain who thinks this lady is unintelligent due to her tatoos (sic), Yep, I have plenty of those too - the wonders of long sleeved shirts!
That's what my views been for ages, how is collecting ponies or other toys for that matter any different from 'collecting' shoes and the like.

I've had an offer from a magazine for £200 :D I'm getting the contract sent out to me today to peruse and sign :D

I was going to post my other photos but I'll have to hold off for now as the magazine may not like that, apparently? They'll be on here eventually tho :P

My friend linked me to the DM article last night and I had to come over to the forum to find you. I love your room! It looks so cozy! Who wouldn't love staying over in it?

I have to ask though - did you take the ponies all off the shelves for that photo with them in a pile on the floor? I have a tiny collection in comparison and I break a sweat at the thought of having to put just them back in their places after taking them down! o_O

XD

*HUGS* I don't think it matters so long as you collected smartly.
Mind you, these guys in the comments probably have their own crazy collections.

I really enjoyed reading about your pony room!  It is quite a pony room too!  For the bad comments, all I can suggest is just let them go.  It's sad that some people can only say mean things, and it's most likely due to the fact that they are lacking love and such in their own lives, so they beat up on all those around them.  Just think how lucky you are to have lot's of friends and family who want to stay in your cool pony room, and all us online pony people who support you!  Have a great day!

What an absolutely lovely collection!
And you look lovely in the pictures too.

I must say the article in the dailymail is lovely. It really doesn't try to be judgmental, just let's you speak you mind about your hobby.
To bad that the sun had to "sensationalize" it.

As for the nasty commentors.
"Oh no, someone is doing something that harms and bothers absolutely no one, least of all me, with their own hard earned cash that I find rather silly! Let me go and point out that I, grand worldly person, think this is stupid, because it's obviously important the world knows I think so." Seriously, whatever gives them their feeling of self worth in life.

PandoraFox you said that so well!!

lipstickcat, yep all the ponies are on the floor and it took ages to put them back! But I rearranged them slightly when I did so it worked out well, I like them better in their slightly altered display.

The pics they didn't print though.... would show you that actually I'm UNDER that pile ;) We did that photo and then one of my head poking out, then my arms and then Joe took a series of photos showing me getting out of it. It was really funny! The first one after I start to get up has a couple ponies flying towards the camera LOL!! So much fun!!

Hugs for you Sarah-Bee!  :)  Bad on that journalist for not telling you it would be an online article, you always get stupid comments from people who delight in trolling people from a position of anonymity!

I'm sure you know this already, but just ignore the bad ones - there really are some sad and ignorant people in the world

You go girl, your collection is fab!

This, exactly my thought!

Wow, your collection is amazing and your pony room is awesome! And I never thought I'd praise the Daily Fail, but that first article was really positive and nicely written.

Though I'd like to put forward a motion that we all refer to Dream Castle as "THAT Dream Castle" from now on ;)

It's such a shame that some people seem determined to spoil the fun of others and can't understand what a hobby is.

Oh I'm so happy that it's you Sarah-Bee! How exciting :D And I thought the article was surprisingly positive, usually I get the vibe that an author is insinuating that pony collectors are a bit nuts, but combined with your interview comments I thought they portrayed pony collecting in a positive light. And it seemed like most people were either neutral or quite interested in pony collecting as a hobby. As for the negative comments, they actually made me laugh. They were either ignorant or just ridiculous, as most negative online comments tend to be :P If anything, I pity the bitter people who have so much time on their hands, and they choose to spend it being cranky in internet comments.

They published a shortened version without photos here in Finland too, the site publishing it is focused on entertainment and 'weird stuff' (like an article about a marijuana vending machine xD).They mostly focused on how much was spent, not mentioning the current worth. Mostly it's written in a neutral tone so I assume it was translated from the DM version.

Wonderful article, congrats to you!  Your pony room looked so nicely organized.  Please don't take the comments personally.  Nasty people post comments like that on *everything.*  Sadly they hurt others in the process, but they mainly hurt themselves--if you put out negativity, that's what you will get.  You, on the other hand, put out something positive that brightened many peoples' day--including mine!

I do wish the reporter hadn't been so emphatic about only *women* remembering MLP fondly--we know from members here that it's not just women! :)
