Title: 1/5th of auctions 'my kid bid please cancel'. *headdesk* UPDATE!
Post by: Thunderwing on November 06, 2014, 03:38:28 PM
Does anyone else run into this as much as I do? I am not a really active ebay seller, maybe 30 auctions a year that actually sell. Of these, in the past year, I have had FIVE bidders who sent me a message asking me to cancel their bid because their 'kid did it'. (Not the exact quote, exact working varies).

I mean, really? I have a hard time believing that 20% of these bids are placed by kids without parental consent! I think it is just bidder remorse! I will no longer be cancelling bids. If someone lets their kid bid, and doesn't want to pay, they can own up and take the non paying bidder strike. Their mistake, their consequence. The last time I cancelled a bid for someone, it took three days! They kept rejecting the cancellation request, and then claiming it was a mistake and please resend.

The latest one was on a lot of Snugglebumms that I have up, for $110. Not a cheap auction. I got a bid almost as soon as it was listed. Three days later, I get this message:

please cancel this item my child ordred it.

I have had ENOUGH of this bs.  I sent this back:

Unfortunately, I am unable and unwilling to cancel this auction. A bid on ebay is a binding contract. Children should not have access to your ebay account. Consider it a necessary lesson to learn - always log out! By bidding on this auction, I may have lost other bids to be placed by other buyers; by cancelling an auction that has bids I lose out on fees. I can not force you to pay for the item at the end of the auction, but I will not cancel it at my expense. It will be your choice to pay or not pay and face a potential non paying bidder strike.

Update:
So the auction ended, and the buyer has not paid. Unpaid item dispute opened on Nov 13th.

Update:
Nov 18th with no response from the buyer. Closed the case, got a refund of final value fees, and a strike on their account. Item relisted and I'm back to where I was before her 'kid  bidded'.

Username is mosh-jess if you want to block them. Doesn't seem to be an active buyer, but is into vintage toys from what I can see.

I have had this happen to me quite a few times. I don't sell all that much either and I didn't really believe either one. One said their kid bid on it and another said their niece and I think I might have had one more too. In some cases it could be true but I agree with you that it is mostly just people that bid quickly and then probably found another one for cheaper or just decided they don't want it. My daughter plays on my computer all the time and she has never bid on any ebay items.

I don't blame you though for sending that message since this is happening to you so often. It is very annoying. Go Thunderwing!!!!!!  :)

Let us know if they respond to your message.

This and zero feedback bidders are why I NEVER have auction style listings anymore, just BIN.  Most often, when someone buys it "now" they will pay immediately or by the next day.

I think there are a lot of people who bid on auctions and get carried away by the game or "winning" aspect of it, and then have second thoughts when it comes time to actually pay something...

I have had this excuse as well. I agree it's most likely buyer's remorse. Or are parents really this negligent these days? This is is extremely likely from what I have seen when I'm out and about. Who knows? But I applaud your message!

The problem is- if the buyer gets angry at you for forcing them to go through with it, they can leave negative feedback for you.  Ebay is usually pretty terrible at siding with the seller, even when no negative is justified.

Things were different when the seller could also leave negative feedback...

I haven't sold on eBay in close to 10 years, but I think you handled it well. I wouldn't cancel it, either. People really need to think hard before bidding: Do I really want this? Can I afford it? Will I use it? - Maybe this will teach her not to be so impulsive.

Funny story--when my daughter was two, she ended up buying $30 worth of Curious George episodes on the Kindle Fire. That was definitely a lesson learned for us!!

Thanks for this note! If I ever consider selling on eBay (and I'm halfway to considering it for the holiday season) I will add a disclaimer to my listing noting I will not cancel these type bids!

Ok...so I feel like I just got hit with a blast of karma. I made an earlier post about how I haven't believed people that told me this and that it has never happened to me. Well it literally just happened to me!!!! My 2 year old just bid on an ebay pony!! I left for one second because I was putting up my big brother ponies that she had gotten into and then when I got back she had bid on a pony!!! :ack:

I feel so silly! And I don't even want to send a message because now I know they won't believe me! I don't know...I guess I might have to change my attitude after this. I'm sure not all of them are telling the truth but it just happened to me.

I'm sure it really does happen sometimes (like it did to you), but most people use the excuse because they made a hasty decision and then regretted it. My fingers are crossed that you're outbid. And, if not? Well, I hope it's not an expensive pony. :flow:

If your kid did that, I think it's up to you to follow the auction up and pay for the item should you 'win' it.  That's not fair to the seller, ever, and you can always use it as a lesson for your kid.  When the pony comes in, it gets put UP.  She doesn't get the pony until she 'works' for the money of your's she spent.  Extra chores maybe until she can earn the pony herself.  Or, you can get the pony up and resale it to someone else, and make her pack the pony up when it sells.  Your decision of course, but that's what my parents would've done had ebay been around to teach me a good lesson about that.

I sell a modest amount of stuff on Ebay, and I've had the "my kid bid on this" excuse, too. Strangely enough, I've also had the "no one bid on this" excuse. A guy bid on one of our vintage Polly Pockets and then said it was an Ebay error or something. True, the rest of the stuff he had bought recently had been computer parts, so it seemed unlikely he bid on it himself. But it had to have been someone in his family/house.

Ok...so I feel like I just got hit with a blast of karma. I made an earlier post about how I haven't believed people that told me this and that it has never happened to me. :) I hope that if you do win that auction, it's not an expensive pony!

I think that´s a great strategy, but maybe not for a 2 year old? They don´t understand the concept of buying or money. Should she win the auction I say it´s just to bite the bullet and buy the pony. But not make the kid pay. It´s the adults mistake for not logging out, not the 2 year olds. Easy mistake to make :-)

I just had someone saying they put in the wrong amount and saying they "don't want to pay" The auction for a vintage Valentino dress and it only closed at around £20.  I am hoping she doesn't leave me a negative feedback. She already sent me two replies saying she doesn't want to pay so I opened an unpaid item case. Annoying but I made 60 listings recently so I suppose I should expect a few bad apples.

Kid, sister, dog... had all the excuses!

Some of them may actually have been a kid bidding. Lesson 1, don't leave your ebay open for your kid to use. Lesson 2, if you didn't and they hacked it make them pay for the things out of their pocket money to show them the consequences!

The dog I mentioned obviously didn't bid but the sister did. I don't buy that for one second.

I'm sick of it too.

I didn't know you could cancel someone's bid without a big to-do!  I just had someone contact me about a bait auction saying they 'didn't mean to bid' on it.  And then apparently when I wasn't glued to my computer, they felt the need to send another message (this is all with the past couple of hours, mind you) saying 'Hey I didn't mean to bid on this'.  I don't want to deal with the drama but part of me wants to write back "Then why did you?".   >_<

Post Merge: November 19, 2014, 11:23:08 AM

Figured out how to cancel it and then blocked her.    It actually wasn't hard, so at least there's that.

This is one of the reasons I no longer sell on ebay. I had so many messages claiming a child had bid, that they wanted the item for a terminally ill child so I should pull the listing & relist at a cheap BIN for them, using hospital as an excuse not to pay etc.

I never had those problems as a seller when you could leave a neg feedback. I don't think a seller should be able to leave a retaliation negative, but a lot of buyers deserve a negative at times.

I love the "unexpected bill" excuse.  Ticks me off to no end.  Even if it is true, if a $15-25 item is going to make or break your "bill", maybe consider your finances *before* you bid.  Cause I'm telling you, my house could burn down to the ground, my car could get demolished, and I could get fired, all at the same time and I could STILL pay for current auctions.  (I certainly wouldn't be buying again for awhile though!) *sigh*  You don't have to be wealthy to be smart with your money.   [end rant]

Ha! I just got back from a quick trip to see that an ended auction had a question on it ...they wanted me to cancel their bid ($4 lol) as they had a lot arrived with the same pony in it. Sheesh. $4. Unbelievable. Anyways, someone else bid and won for $4.50 before I could reply so I'll post their pony with a bonus 50 cents :)

People often act ridiculously on ebay, I think we can all agree.

I like to think what I bid on or what happens is my responsibilty, once I bid on a minty G1 pony with her ribbon & brush and accidentally bid 200 instead of 20.. (I did it from my phone, sometimes it makes mistakes.. have since learnt not to do it). Thank goodness the seller wasn't shill bidding on the item and it didnt really go over to much.

Lesson learned, very careful with ebay bids since.

Back to the point, I think you're right in your actions. I don't think accepting to cancel bids unless there is a very good reason should be normal practice, and you are most definitely in the right.

I actually did have something like that happen to me once, but I paid for the auction because it was my mistake.  It wasn't the same thing, but I put 1 too many zeros in my max bid, and I guess someone else really wanted it.  The auction went $250+ over the $100 max bid I meant to place.

I know people who've used that exact excuse though, and you're right, it's never actually their kids, they just had buyers remorse.

Identity theft by other people can happen and sometimes its not children, but other adults that log into another person's account and make unauthorized/bids and purchases. On occasion, I'd logged into my ebay account at my brother's computer at his house. I never knew that my login info had been saved until one day, about 8 years ago, I found that  his fiance had logged into my account and clicked "Buy It Now" on a $75 pair of cowgirl boots. Luckily, my Paypal info wasn't saved so she couldn't transfer the money from my bank account to pay for them. It was the first of what became many thefts/attempted thefts on her part. In later instances, she was caught with cash stolen out of my parents' bedroom, attempting to steal a statue from a baby's grave, jewelry went missing from a neighbor's house after she left it, her stepdaughter's piggy bank was emptied out, then finally she plead guilty to breaking and entering into a person's apartment and taking and using their credit card.

This is awesome, can I copy this text? I don't speak English fluently and these situations happen to me very often :| Of course I have ebay filters on. Eh...

I also have this problem.  I would say that around 30% of my eBay buyers never pay and those who give an explanation always say their kid did it!  If that many kids are being allowed to run around the internet without adult supervision, I'm worried for the next generation.

My biggest problem right now though is somebody who claims she "accidentally bought the wrong pony for a friend because she knows nothing about them".  (Well, if that's the case, almost everything she buys on eBay is for her "friend", judging by her feedback which all state how much she loves the pony she just bought!)  She wants me to cancel the transaction.  In all honesty, I didn't see her message until after I'd already opened a non-paying bidder case against her.  Then she turned on me, demanding I "close the case and tell eBay she's paid so that she doesn't get a mark against her account"!  (So I should pay fees for her error?!)

Now today she's paid for the pony with a note saying that I am not to post it and am to refund her as soon as I get online.  Not sure what to do.  I've explained to her about fees but apparently she still thinks I should pay for her mistake.  I suppose eBay would side with her though so I don't have much choice.  Not a good time for me when I am already in debt...eBay's been costing me more in fees with issues like this than I've been making lately, and with no other income, it's getting really difficult. :(  I wish incompetent people would take responsibility for their own errors.

I'd mail it to her anyway.  She bid, she paid, and I don't see how they could side with her when you've done nothing wrong.  Document everything on the condition of the pony when you send it, send it with tracking/confirmation, and I'd think she'd be hard pressed to have a legit claim.

This. eBay have sided with the sellers before, all you need to do is document everything like coinoperatedgirl said.

Ugh.  They're probably the same people who return clothes that have been worn for a refund.

I don't know that I'd mail the item. I think I would call eBay and seek their assistance. They would handle the situation and side with you and make sure you get your fees back even if the transaction is cancelled.

I refunded her minus the fees, politely telling her that I couldn't afford to pay for hers (and others) errors, and thankfully she accepted it with no fuss.  I would have called eBay customer services but they've been awful lately.  Twice I've used the online chat in the last month and they've "left the conversation" with no explanation!  So I've given up now.  Not sure if eBay UK is getting worse or if I've just been unlucky.

Oh good. I was just about to suggest exactly that when I saw your update :)
