G4 Pony Classification?
« on: November 04, 2019, 03:21:08 PM »
I'm trying to stay on top of these for the Wiki but not sure if I should open up a new page for the 2020 line or just tack them on to G4. Insight? Ideas?

Just plain ol G4. If SHS,  Teeny-tinies and Dream Beauties count as 1. whatever, then this is just g4 impo.

I went with "G4.5, the 'reboot' is just 'reboot'". Here I had gotten used to calling the reboot G4s "G4.5", but these upcoming ponies are much more similar to G3's G3.5 than the 2016 reboot molds were, so it makes more sense to call these new ones G4.5s. Even if it'll be a pain to start trying to apply this term to these new ponies now after a few years of calling the other ponies G4.5.

Just plain ol G4. If SHS,  Teeny-tinies and Dream Beauties don't count as 1. whatever, then this is just g4 impo.

If these were just a side line that'd be one thing, but I suspect these will be entirely replacing the current style molds for next year until G5 starts up.

I feel like we should’ve just called what we used to call G4.5 the “Movie” line, and these should be G4.5.

:P I knew it would be important to include.
I'm willing to rename/merge the pose pages that i had set up, it makes a lot more sense to call these G4.5 proper as the other figures were definitely cut from a similar cloth.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. Perhaps we could do generation 4, and mould series? ie: g4m1, g4m2, g4m3.

Or, stick with plain g4, but then reboots 1 and 2? ie: g4r1, g4r2. Just an idea!

Eh, I disagree on that. These molds began in 2016, before the movie and its merchandise came out (in 2017), and stuck around after the movie as well. I don't think they did the 2016 molds because of the movie.

Something like this could work! It's not consistent with the G3 terms, yeah. But it would make since for G4 since now it has three different styles of molds.

Potion G4s? They’re marketed as potion ponies. No clue if that will be a consistent gimmick though. I never thought of what we call G4.5s to be different enough to warrant the .5 label, but using that label for these instead would be confusing.

G4.75 is probably what will end up sticking though, even though I think we’re getting a bit excessive with the decimals. :P

agree that now in hindsight the SHS line and bridal pose are still first generation MLP.  If you do a label designation like potion or movie that would make sense for the box art they come in and yeah "ugly demon" is getting my attention because I am like : these  things are not ponies (shudders)...

anyhow, best of luck in deciding

I am leaning towards G4, just like the reboot models are not really G4.5 to me. The .5 to me represents a transitional design stage. So if the new molds turn out to be just that I'll probably call them G4.5
If not I'll call them G4 and whatever they are based on (series, movie, musical... dunno what Hasbroken has still planned for them in 2020).

What if they really are transitional? What if...Hasbro is returning to the grand return of Little Litters Kitties because cat vids have been all the rage on youtube? What if...masterminding cats have taken over Hasbro?!

Ugly Demons gets my vote :P

I've never been fan of the "but SHS/Dream Beauties/etc are still G1!!!" argument because it doesn't make sense. Those were only ever side-lines, they didn't replace the original G1 molds. It's like saying "G3 Ponyville should be called G3.5!". IMO it's only a new generation (or half-generation) if it completely replaces the current molds/design/etc.

It's difficult to know what to call these until we've seen more, really. I mean, the moniker "G3.5" wasn't really settled upon until G4 happened. I remember plenty of people calling G3.5 "G4" and other names prior to that.. I think it's too soon to nickname these, anyway. They've only just appeared online.

I think I'm in favour of calling these G4.75 or something like that. Or maybe we could go for something like G4, G4.2 (Movie/reboot/whatever), G4.3 (these)? Or is that too confusing.

Ahh that's good to note. I was just a wee young babby then so I never knew if you all figured out the term at the moment or far in the future...
